Principals Report

Dylan’s a Winner Dylan Sutherland came back from the Kojonup Speech and Drama Festival with a medal, after delivering a heartfelt speech about his step mum Lisa. There was hardly a dry eye in the house after Dylan finished his speech that centred on the reasons why his mum was his hero. Congratulations, Dylan and well done to all students who entered this competition. Ms Steed was very impressed with our students’ performances and is looking to take an even bigger team next year. Assembly Just a reminder that the annual Country Week assembly is on Friday 23 June at 2.35pm. This will also be a normal school assembly where Attendance awards and RAPT awards are given out. All parents are very welcome to attend. School Board A new community member was appointed to the School Board last week, Mr John Goodheart joined our team, along with the re-appointment of Mrs Robyn Quartermaine and Mr Ian Hanna. Parent representatives that were successful were Mr Scott Keast and Mrs Melissa Berrigan. Congratulations to all of these members. I am sure they will continue to work hard to ensure our school is moving forward with purpose. We farewelled Ms Suzanne Leckie and Ms Ziagul Sultani last meeting. Both ladies have earned a well deserved break. Thanks must go to both Suzanne and Ziagul for their investment of time and their commitment to the school and students whilst a part of our School Board. We wish them all the best for the next challenge they take on.

Attendance Gains I thought I would share with you some data that is pleasing for our school. Since Semester 2 last year we have made significant gains in our attendance rate figures as evidenced by the graphs below. Congratulations must go to the parents who have assisted us by ensuring their children are not missing school, as well as the staff at KSHS who are monitoring rates all the time and encouraging students to attend school on a regular basis. We are proud of our results and are working hard to ensure they get even better. Pizza Attendance Challenge For Weeks 8-10 (inclusive) the forms in the two categories below with the highest overall attendance for those weeks will win a ‘Pizza feast” for lunch in Week 1 of next term. Emergency Drill Over the next few weeks we will be testing our emergency procedures and will be holding a practise event so please be aware if you are visiting or calling the school in the next few weeks that this may be on and follow the instructions of the staff at the time. This event will be scheduled not to conflict with critical learning agendas. Fidget Spinners These toys are causing distractions in classrooms and should not be brought to school by students. The classroom teacher will ask the student to put these away in the first instance and then confiscate them should the student continue to play with them. Students may collect these from the front office at the end of the day. Should the student continue this inappropriate behaviour a parent will be contacted to pick up the spinner from the front office and behaviour management sanctions will apply. Changes in Admin Carolyn Cook will take over from me as the Acting Principal on Friday 16 June. I will be on long service leave for Week 9, but will be back in my normal Associate Principal role in Week 10. It is envisaged that Ms Polding will be back in Term 3. I would like to say a huge thank you to Gavin Stevens for helping our school out whilst I was in the Acting position. Gavin was a great support to myself and the staff whilst he was here and his knowledge about all things operational was greatly appreciated. Thanks too to the students, staff and parents that assisted me whilst I was in the role. Mrs Sharon Poett Acting Principal

Katanning Senior High School Vision—Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Leadership

This year Katanning Senior High School is taking 40 students and 7 staff members to Perth for Country Week. Country Week is a sporting competition where Senior High Schools from all over Western Australia come together to compete in a variety of sports. This year we are competing against 48 schools, totalling approximately 3300 students. We are competing in Boys Basketball, Boys Volleyball, Girls Volleyball, Mixed Touch Rugby and Netball. While at Country Week students are given the chance to experience things they may not normally experience. During the evenings we will take part in a variety of activities, which include; the movies, mini golf, Bounce and a formal dinner where presentations are made. Students are also given the chance to improve their Self-Management Skills and Interpersonal Skills. Self-Management Skills are demonstrated through the student’s ability to regulate their own schedules, whether this be for meals, making the bus on time or knowing when their next game is scheduled. This can also be the smallest things, such as making sure they are hydrated or that they are organised for the day ahead. Interpersonal Skills are how the students interact with others; not only their immediate circle of friends, but peers from different year levels, students from other schools and even the staff members of the various establishments that we frequent. If you would like to keep up to date with how our teams are going the daily results are posted at www.schoolsportwa.com.au HPE Team—Country Week 2017 “Go KSHS”

The Certificate I & II Sport and Recreation students were visited by players and support staff from the Perth Wildcats during Week 8. Jesse Wagstaff, Angus Brandt and Mason Bragg spent time with students both in the classroom and on the court as a part of the Wildcats 2017 Regional Tour. In the classroom the players discussed the rigors of high performance training and explained the daily routines of a professional athlete. Students were interested to draw links between the professional coaching and the amateur coaching they had completed as a part of the Year 10 Specialised Basketball Cup.

After the Q&A session the group headed to the gym to take part in some training exercises designed to ensure maximum motivation among young athletes. Drills and games focused on agility, shooting and teamwork, excellent practice for our young coaches. We would like to say a massive thankyou to the Wildcats organisation who really do go out of their way to bring basketball into regional schools. Team HPE

Year 8 enjoyed cooking numerous recipes this term, learning different cooking skills by using items, including the oven, grill, stove top, beater, blender and electric frying pan.

Year 9 learnt about packaging and labelling. They designed and produced their own label and packaging for a recipe of their choice, suitable for a food stall.

Year 10 Child Care has made Semolina pikelets. It had to be healthy and appealing to toddlers, with fruit hidden inside.

Year 11 Food Science students are learning and tasting about staple foods around the world. The Children, Family and the Community class are excited to do volunteering for international community, “Days for Girls”. Our project is funded by Rotary. They enjoyed Mrs Brown as a Rotarian

guest speaker’s talk on “Days for Girls” and hearing about Rotary’s role in the community. Home Ec Team

Taleeah has been busy working on her art activity with Mrs Barb Anderson. After brainstorming ideas Taleeah chose a beach themed craft/photography collage for her Expressive Art project. Taleeah explored her creativity by expressing herself through visual storytelling. She used different textures such as paint, bark, sand, shells and feathers to create a beautiful picture of her enjoying time by the beach. Mrs Anderson also made an expressive poem using the letters in Taleeah's name for her picture. On Wednesday 31 May Jill Leonard the visiting teacher from SSEN (Schools of Special Educational Needs) held a PD Workshop for all the Special Needs Education Assistants on flexible and practical ways to support students with vision impairment/or hearing loss. At the end of the session Jill demonstrated how to make visual and tactile song cards for visually impaired students. All

the E.A's enjoyed the session as we tried to find and listened to current 'in' songs teenagers were listening to. Inclusive Learning Team

DRAMA

Drama classes continue to be a lot of fun this term with students in years 9, 11 and 12 developing their ability to alter their voice and body language to portray different characters and create improvisation scenes. The Year 11/12 class has been focusing on Presentational Theatre where only a few actors portray many characters; quite a challenging task. Both classes are working hard on developing 20 minute pieces for the YohFest competition in Albany which will happen in August. The theme this year is, ‘It Starts With Me’ and the Year 9’s are doing a piece on sexuality and bullying while the Year 11/12s are exploring the connection between human activity and the health of the Earth. Next term we will do a pre-competition presentation of the plays in the Town Hall open to everyone – more information will be provided closer to the date. Finally, we are hoping to expand our costume and prop supplies so if anyone has any old dress ups they would like to donate to the school they would be gratefully received. Thank you.

Sarah Watson—Drama

We would like thank once again the teachers, parents and the community for the help in raising $2,000, in the three fundraisers that we have done. This is going to be a great help towards our Reward Camp to Millstream. Our Bush Rangers have been working very hard in the vegie patch and we now have two garden beds planted with winter vegies. We would like to thank Mr Sandwell for the loan of his small trailer and also for the heads up on where to get a good soil mix. We would also like to thank the gardeners Syd, Tyron and William for their help in setting up the garden beds. The process of securing the sleepers is ongoing but should be finished by the start of Term 3.

Our excitement is building for our Reward camp to Millstream National Park in the Pilbara. NINE SCHOOL DAYS TO GO. We can’t wait to tell you about our adventures on our return.

ACE Romeo and Juliet – Shakespeare workshops

On Wednesday 31 May and Thursday 1 June students in Year 7, 8 and 9 ACE English classes attended drama based workshops at the Residential College run by myself and Miss Watson. It was fantastic to have the opportunity to use some of the knowledge I gained at the Bell Shakespeare Professional Learning back in March and to have an experienced drama queen to work with (Miss Watson).

The workshops began with warm up activities and students were walking at various paces, jumping, clapping, making toasts and riding their horses around the room. The prompts we used were in Shakespearean language. Here are four of them (although we used many more):

Gallop apace – mount your steed and ride it Healths – thrust your hand in the air to make a toast and shout ‘ha ha’ Bitterest gall – you have drunk poison and need to die very loudly and dramatically O’erleap – jump in the air

Once warmed up we looked at the Prologue to the story of Romeo and Juliet. Students were split into 5 groups and had to sequence pieces of the Prologue into the correct order. We then discussed the language and what

it told us about the story. We also discussed narrative structure and pondered why Shakespeare gave away the ending in the Prologue.

From here we looked at some of the phrases coined by Shakespeare that we still use today. Almost all students said that they, a parent or other member of the family used some of the phrases, so some of you are using Shakespearean language at home, perhaps without even realising it!

We also did some speed dating which saw students complimenting and insulting each other depending on how the date was going. This session was hilarious, especially two students who accidentally used the list of insults to complement

each other – it was said with such affection but the words didn’t match. After this we split into two feuding houses (Montague and Capulet), made war cries and insulted each other some more.

Then we went into a 32 second version of Romeo and Juliet. In this session, 9 students per round got to say key parts of the play in a loud and speedy way. There were also a lot of dramatic deaths happening. It gave students a good, quick summary of the entire play.

The final part of the session was the students acting out the entire play. We gave the 5 groups an Act each, which they summarised for the rest of the group and then performed for us. Because we had time limits we used modern language summaries of the play.

Depending on what session was running, we stopped for either morning tea or lunch, which were prepared by our very own Home Economics Department.

These drama sessions were designed to give students a basic understanding of the story of Romeo and Juliet and based on feedback from the students I believe that we achieved this goal. The next step is for students to undertake a Master Class, where they gain a deeper understanding of the text and Shakespearean language.

I would like to thank Miss Watson for helping to run these sessions, the Home Economics Department for the yummy food and the students for making the sessions so much fun. I look forward to more Shakespearean feats in future.

Katanning Senior High School Vision—Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Leadership

Why are we playing games? If you were to peer through the window at FTD late in a tutoring session you may see students playing games. Why you may ask? Well everything we do in tutoring has a purpose. Be it to build resiliency, try something new or meet a need. The games we play are no different. Playing a board or card game against another student or a tutor has benefits. Let me explain. Did you know? Recently the staff at KSHS learnt about the ‘Healthy Mind Platter’ which has seven daily essential mental activities necessary for optimum mental health.

One of these seven areas is ‘Play Time’. Play time is when we allow ourselves to be spontaneous or creative, playfully enjoying novel experiences which help us to make new connections in the brain. Research suggests that play time is equally as important as sleep, rest and food. It’s essential in adult creativity and child development. Human play and laughter is a fundamental social phenomenon which enables humans to develop flexible emotional reactions. We engage in play time by playing a board game or cards.

Now you’re thinking ‘Ok Ms Fitzgerald… but what does that mean?’ Well, basically we get the following out of playing games;

They help us have fun and feel good. One effect of playing board/

cards games is laughing. Laughing can increase endorphins which are the chemicals that make us feel happy.

They help us practice essential cognitive skills, like problem solving. The hippocampus and prefrontal cortex especially benefit from playing them. These areas of the brain are responsible for complex thoughts and memory formation.

They reduce the risk of cognitive decline, which can be associated with dementia and

Alzheimer’s. We are exercising it and making it stronger which reduces the risk of losing its power.

They speed up response times.

They reduce stress.

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY they support child development. These games play a very important

role in Child health and brain development. Board games help children develop logic and reasoning skills, improve critical thinking and boost spatial reasoning, which are higher order thinking skills. It can also increase verbal and communication skills, whilst assist in developing attention skills and the ability to concentrate and focus for longer periods of time.

STEM project FTD thought we might put all those Marvel Superhero discs to good use by using them for a STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology Maths) project. In consultation with the students Mr Gielingh suggested that perhaps we could recreate a structure of global significance. After some research he and Daniel set about creating our version of the Eiffel Tower. Stay tuned for the final outcome.

Have you met?

Mrs Caitlyn Fitzgerald—Program Coordinator -Follow the Dream: Partnerships for Success

Mr Gielingh A little about him. He comes to tutoring on Tuesdays. He is a Health and Phys Ed teacher. He needs to work on his knowledge of Capital Cities around the world. He was the creative mind behind our Eiffel Tower project.

Daniel Hall A little about him. He comes to tutoring every week. Although he’s not sure what he might like to do when he leaves school he is open to the possibility of game design. He is a driving force behind our Eiffel Tower project.

Farmers Centre Creek Street Katanning Farmers Centre have supported the Workplace Learning program for many years, and find it a valuable tool in recruitment. They are able to have a student attend one day a week to ‘have a go’ at various tasks within the business, which allows the student insight into the real employment possibilities available to them. Students who are keen to work in the industry and who show the necessary aptitude and ethics are often rewarded with employment prospects within the business or industry. Hadihafizul (Zul) is enjoying the hands on nature of his role with Farmers Centre, and learning about the various machinery and what they do. He has been able to undertake a wide range of tasks from painting, general maintenance and assembly, and a broadened view of what a Plant Mechanic’s role is.

Premier Smash Repairs 113 Daping Street Katanning Premier Smash currently have one student placed for Workplace Learning, and are always willing to give a student a go. Danny is more than happy to offer students a WPL spot and has also taken multiple students to accommodate interested participants when needed. Phillip has always thought he would like to become a Panel Beater and likes working with cars. Undertaking his Workplace Learning at Premier has given Phillip the chance to work in an actual panel shop and take part in vehicle repairs - something that he loves. Working with the team has given Phillip a definitive view that this is the career for him, and he wants to pursue a career in Panel Beating in the future.

Eclipse Hair Design 123 Clive Street Katanning Shelley and the staff at Eclipse Hair Design have had a very successful past working with Workplace Learning. Shelley finds it an excellent tool for canvassing future apprentices, and has hired four WPL students for apprenticeships! Students get a hands on experience into hairdressing and beauty, and are able to use the experience to make a decision whether it is the career pathway for them. Rhianan is working with the team at Eclipse and loves her time

there. She chose to do Workplace Learning as she had an idea of what she wanted to do for work, but wanted to have a chance to give it a go before pursuing a career. She has found that being in the salon has helped her to decide that a career in the industry is definitely something that she would like to pursue. Her weekly tasks vary from shop front displays to assisting the hairdressers, preparing materials and eventually answering customer calls and enquiries.

CGS Tyres 11 Richardson Street Katanning CGS Tyres have Year 12 student Vincient on board this year. Owners Geoff and Fiona are able to offer students a great insight into a career pathway within their industry, whilst experiencing both the workshop and on-site/on-farm repairs. Vincient has been with CGS all of Term 2, and has enjoyed his time so far. As an Engineering student, Vincient must complete Workplace Learning as part of his school qualification. This appeals to him as he wants to work with his hands, and feels best suited to a workshop or automotive related industry. Heading to WPL one day a week allows Vincient to learn new things and be exposed to an industry that he previously knew little about.

Woolworths Katanning Clive Street Katanning Woolworths Katanning has joined our list of local employers, taking on two students for Workplace Learning . The students have been welcomed into the team, and are enjoying a variety of tasks from fronting stock to maintaining a gleaming store. One of our students has enjoyed her workplace so much, that she has been wanting to stay on all day. She is the perfect fit for a customer related role, with her gleaming smile and energy. Ali brings a lot of fun to each work day, with jovial antics keeping everyone on their toes. He has been crushing every empty box in sight and generally enjoying his time. Both students are happily engaging in the workplace and are eager to return each week for their work day. Having students placed in such a busy and ever-changing environment is a great opportunity for them to gain experience in not only retail, but customer service skills that can be used in any workplace. CLONTARF FOUNDATION KATANNING FOOTBALL ACADEMY

On Tuesday 23 May, the Katanning junior boys headed over to Kalgoorlie with the Albany Academy to participate in the Goldfields Cup. The long trip was broken up with a few stops including lunch in Merredin, and then it was back on the road. By the time we arrived at the accommodation it was 6.30pm and we headed straight for dinner as the boys were starving. That night the boys had a good night sleep and rested well for the carnival the next day. In the morning the boys headed for breakfast and showers, and then it was off to the oval for a massive day of football. The boys won one game and lost two but, we were extremely happy with the way the boys conducted themselves on the day. That night, we headed out for dinner to one of the local restaurants for an all you can eat buffet. The boys loved the food, as there was a variety of meat, fish and salads. After the massive feed we headed up to the open cut mine. The boys couldn’t believe how big the trucks were and how many of them were working at night. The next day was an early start back on the road, heading home once again we stopped in Merredin for lunch and a stretch. Once the boys arrived back into town we dropped them home for a good rest.

On Monday 12 June, eight of the Clontarf lads received their shirts. Mrs Poett, Acting Principal, presented the boys with their shirts. The boys got their shirt for receiving 100 points. They get points for their attendance at school as well as morning trainings.

Once they get to 100 points, they receive a Clontarf shirt that they can wear to school. All of the boys were excited to put them on and are extremely proud to represent Clontarf. The boys who received shirts were: Year 7: William Roe, Jaksyn Taylor, Jarell Wreford, Daniel Hall, Darren Hall, Tyler Maher Year 8: Marley Bolton Year 11: Nui Andrews Congratulations boys and well done on your consistency towards school. Eight students travelled to the Kojonup Speech and Drama festival this year. They had spent weeks practicing their pieces and by the time that they bundled on to the bus, they were well and truly rearing to go! Students performed mimes and monologues, competing against three other schools: Kojonup High School, Gnowangerup High School and Great Southern Grammar. Some of the performances were very evenly matched, resulting in some headaches for the judges, who had to choose a winner out of some fierce competition. The mimes were a particular favourite, with the performances getting plenty of laughs from the crowd. It was a terrific day, and one student even managed to get a medal, with Dylan Sutherland from Year 7 winning for his heartfelt speech about his step mum entitled, “My hero”. Hearty congratulations to all the performers! It shows tremendous courage to get up and perform in front of an audience, and that kind of courage is to be applauded. Miss Steed—Literacy specialist.

KOJONUP SPEECH AND DRAMA 2017

Congratulations Nakeesha Miniter on being selected in the final team for the AFL’s Diversity All Stars. The program is made up of the best emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander female leaders.

Nakeesha was first recognised after playing in the Kirby Bentley Cup in Perth and was selected in the WA indigenous Kickstart team where she flew to Melbourne in 2016 to compete against the other States and Territories. WA won for the first time since the program has been running. Nakeesha was selected in the Woomeras team in which she played in Melbourne this February. Nakeesha was then selected out of 50 girls from the All Nations team and the Woomeras to make the final team. Selection in the program was based on her overall performance on and off the football field.

Nakeesha will find out in August where she will be heading to take part in a week long leadership and football development program where the participants will be put through an elite AFL personal development training schedule.

Good luck Nakeesha and keep following your dreams!

The Meningococcal Immunisation Program

What is the Meningococcal ACWY Vaccination Program?

The Meningococcal ACWY vaccination program is in response to a recent increase of meningococcal infection caused by a particular type of the bacteria, ‘serogroup W’.

Individuals aged between 15-19 years within the WA community will be targeted to receive this vaccine in order to reduce the spread of this disease.

All parents of children in Year’s 10 to 12 should have already received a Men W vaccination consent form that was sent home with your child. We are urging all parents to complete this form and return to school promptly to protect your child and the community.

The vaccine will be administered in Term 3.

Why is the program targeting 15-19 year olds? This age group experience some of the highest rates of meningococcal carriage and illness. Once infected, they can transmit the bacteria to people who are at increased risk of infection, including young children. It is expected that providing the meningococcal W (Men W) vaccine to this age group will reduce the spread of this potentially life threatening infection within the WA community.

Why is this targeted vaccination program necessary? Although numbers are low, Men W cases have been increasing each year since 2013 with one case notified in that year and 14 cases in 2016. Two more cases have been notified in 2017. Prior to 2013, serogroup W was uncommon with only six cases diagnosed in the 13 year period from 2000 to 2012.

Which vaccine will be used? The meningococcal ACWY vaccine will be used. This vaccine protects against four groups of meningococcal bacteria: A, C, W and Y. The conjugate meningococcal ACWY vaccine Nimenrix®, supplied in Australia by Pfizer will be used in this program

How will the program work? In 2017, WA Health and local council nursing teams will conduct the vaccinations at schools to students in Years 10, 11 and 12. Additional vaccination clinics will be conducted at community health clinics to capture 18–-19 year olds and other age-eligible persons not attending high school.

In 2018 and 2019 the program would target incoming Year 10 students only.

CAREERS - DEFENCE FORCE

On Wednesday 7 June 2017 Year 9-12 students were invited to a talk by Australian Defence Force recruitment officers. Warrant Officer Class 2 Amelia King and Petty Officer Stephanie Clark of Specialist Recruiting Team — Women shared their experiences with the students. They informed students on the academic and the physical requirements to join the Australian Defence Forces.

Students were engaged and especially the Year 9 students asked a lot of questions. They even got Warrant Officer Amelia King to demonstrate a set of push-ups and were duly impressed with her performance.
