In no other city do you come face to face with such powerful images of Italy’s lost peasant culture. Today a Unesco Heritage Site, the sassi (stone houses) were home to more than half of Matera’s populace until well after World War II. People and animals slept together.

VOLCANO & LOST CITY - MT. VESUVIUS & POMPEIIPompeii is a ruined and partially buried Roman town-city near modern Naples. It was destroyed, and completely bur-ied, during a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mt Vesuvius. Today, it is both one of the most popular tourist attractions of Italy and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This legendary volcano domi-nates the landscape, looming ominously over Naples and its environs.
