POWERED BY INNOVATION

Peter Munzlinger (Gaastra Sail Designer)

The first exciting year with Gaastra is behind me; it was full of many new experiences and meeting great people I have been able to work with. The new designs I introduced for the 2012 season, Pure, Cosmic and Phantom proved very successful both in the feedback from the customers and in the magazine tests.

For 2013 we prepared a full and clear range of products, developing further each single line. With such a big range of sails often it is not easy for the public to understand which is the right sail to choose so we will take advantage of this catalogue to explain it as clearly as possible. We also rationalized the different lines, some sizes have been canceled, some have been added. Where possible we tried to reduce the amount of masts to be used within all the sizes of a particular sail line. We have many new features in our products. New materials in our sails, lighter, stronger, much more UV resistant. A brand new thermo formed mast protector, a new anti-chafing protector at the head of the mast-sleeve. We brought further and with no compromise our radial panel sail design concept. We worked on our mast lines bringing out a new 340 RDM 100 masts which was missed by the hardcore wave sailors. I didn't change the mast bending characteristics as this concept fits very well in my style, we only updated the lamination and construction numbers to improve the durability. We developed a completely new carbon boom, both as a Slalom and Wave model, incredibly light, stiff and strong, in monocoque carbon technology, with a completely new front end and components. During the development we tested many other features and solutions that didn't make it into production but which helped a lot in the learning process, bringing many interesting new ideas for the future. For 2013 we developed the most competitive Vapor ever. The hard work of our team paid off. Our distinctive blue sails were always at the front in the first PWA events of the season and Ross Williams went on the podium in Korea and Sylt in this extremely difficult and hard fought season, proving the value of the design. We wanted to bring those distinctions also to the other flat water sails so we developed a new colored film which not only makes our Gaastra sails much more recognizable on the water, but has the added value of a much stronger resistance to the harmful UV rays.

If you get a chance to try out a new Gaastra sail, please do. We pour our heart and soul into these products and you will be sure to notice this every time you sail a Gaastra rig.For more information and updates please check our website at www.gaastra.com

NEW 2-PLY FACTS

In order to be able to reduce the weight of the sails we developed

a completely new range of laminate materials, with a much thinner

film supported by a double structure of fibers, a balanced scrim of

fibers orientated in the warp and fill and a classic X-Ply angled series

of fibers. From here the name 2-Ply. We created a complex woven

web with the highest durability that is very light weight.

Beside the proven X-Ply we use this new laminate in the upper sail

body to achieve minimal swing weight and protection of critical

areas.

• less weight: use of new 2-PLY laminate reduces the weight in the top area of the sail by more than 10%

• softer handling for better performance and comfort in gusts• better strain value for perfect profile and shape over long term• better UV resistance due to a thinner film• used in crucial sail areas for best response, maneuverability and

minimal swing weight

What could make the Manic better in 2013? How about a 10% weight savings in the top of the sail? How about more strength and durability? We have accomplished this in our classic all-round wave sail that excels in just about any condition. Super light in the hands, well bal-anced and neutral feeling on the wave; what you have here is a dream machine that works perfectly for down the line sailing or even flat water high wind sailing. The Manic will not disappoint.

• use of 2-Ply // in upper body for reduced weight, lower swing weight and better response

• more low end performance• Radial Panel Layout 2G// improved layout for per-

fect locked in sail shape, smooth profile, twist con-trol and durability

• 3D EVA mast protector // for maximum shock-ab-sorbing and minimal weight

• 3D mast head protector // for maximum shock-ab-sorbing and minimal weight

• 2 mast concept // Revised outline parameters on key sizes

• More torque // provides more power for multifin boards

• Low clew position // for better control in bottom turns and better leach twist

• Soft, elastic and alive character // for fast response and improved handling

Making the Manic better was no easy task. For 2013 we decided to make it lighter by us-ing our new developed 2-ply. We put this ma-terial in the top half of the sail getting a dou-ble weight gain, one because of the lighter material, and two because of the lower swing weight of the top. Because it is lighter does not mean the durability has been compro-mised. All the light material is located in the inside of the sail, while the perimeter and all the critical parts of the sail are well reinforced. The 2-ply is also a little softer, so by finely tuning our radial panel layout to keep the distortion under control we got the sail softer and more powerful at the same time. On the bigger sizes we played a bit with the outline to make the sails even more maneu-verable and to fit in the 2 mast program. We also fine tuned even further the luffcurve to get the perfect balance. Now you can rig the whole range on 2 masts only, a 370 and 400 (on the 5,7 with a long extension).

The Manic is a great sail for all conditions and any windsurfer. When it comes to performance in big waves or choppy, overpowered conditions, it is in a class by itself; a radical wave sail with neutral handling no matter what happens.

Take all the new improvements in the 2013 Manic and add the bullet-proof Xply throughout the whole sail and you get the Manic HD. Built for abuse, you don´t have to worry about the Manic HD. Rocks or reefs, concrete and sand the Manic performs both on and off the wa-ter like it should. Soft and manageable for any condi-tions. If you want a bomb proof sail, the Manic HD de-livers the goods.

Our team want the most durable sails avail-able. They also want them lighter every year. With our new material we have accomplished this task. The new panel layouts support a soft-er balance in the rig while the perfect shaping characteristics make this sail absorb bumps, waves, chop and any imperfections. The op-timized twist control makes the sail light in the hands as you have come to expect from the Manic. The all X-ply material guarantees dura-bility and a long lasting lifespan.

Lighter and stronger than ever, the Manic HD delivers on its promise. It is the same as the normal Manic in design but reinforced to be a true warrior for those that need an bomb proof sail. Radical in it’s nature the Manic HD remains in a class of its own!

When you want power to move, the Poison delivers. More seam shape and a touch more power further back in the rig, the all new Poison is more stable than ever. Perfect for early planing and eating up gusty and onshore wind and wave conditions. Great as a bump and jump sail in flat water lakes the Poison capitalizes on all-round performance. The 2-ply laminate makes the sail light and strong and a higher aspect ratio gives a larger range to each size. The radial panel layout combined with the double X-Ply luff panel gives instant power and acceleration. The bigger dudes will love the feeling of this rig as soon as they pump it up! This is the most powerful sail in our wave range, it will certainly impress!

The 2013 Poison like all the other wave sails is more than 10% lighter in the top of the sail us-ing our new 2-Ply laminate. This material used in the top half of the sail helped a lot mak-ing the Poison an even more all round wave sail which will make many wave sailors fall in love with it. Ross Williams, usually a Manic user, decided that this will be his sail of choice as now the power it delivers perfectly suits his weight and powerful style. “I shortened the luff on the bigger sizes to make it more com-pact and radical. We tested some different luff panel material combinations, but at the end the double Xply luff panels proved to be the best solution for a higher stability” says Peter. The evolved radial panel layout helps to keep the loading on the sail under control. During the development phase we found it to be crucial the right positioning and alignment of the seams.

Power to the people- sheet this sail in and take off. Power is almost instant with the slight back hand pres-sure. The twist lets it go when you don’t need it. Any water condition the new Poison can handle. Get on it.

The IQ is our 4 batten wave sail. This concept was introduced a few years ago for the new school wave sailing style and for the new multifin wave boards. This kind of sail is more compact and more radical in the maneuvers. The new school style of sailing wants to stay closer to the steep and hollow part of the wave and this is what the IQ is designed for. But that does not mean that the IQ is only good in radical and perfect conditions, it still has enough power and stability for being used in less than ideal conditions. For 2013 all sizes are 4 battens and we introduced a new 5.4 size.

Being the lightest wave sail in our range, with the new 2-Ply laminate we took it to a new level. More than 10% lighter in the top and with a better swing weight of the top half, the new IQ is even more radical. “I worked on the outline and the profiles to find the perfect compromise between performance, stability and radical behavior. The 5.4 is a completely new developed size, we wanted to keep the 4 batten concept through the whole line” says Peter. The 5.4 is big and powerful enough and with 4 battens remains light in the hands when the wind gets stronger. The luff curve has been increased to give more reactivity to the sails.

The IQ will revolutionize your sailing style- Full on radical performer.

During the development phase of the 2013 model we tried different material configurations, but at the end an ordinary monofilm layout with dacron luffpanel was what gave the best performance. The more direct feeling of the film combined with the forgivingness of the dacron luff made for the winning combo. We worked on different leech tension variations and panel layouts and finally came out with the perfect combination. Some adjustments in the outline further made the package a perfect free-style weapon. We designed a completely new 5,7 with 4 battens, so the whole range is 4 battens now. The trademark radial panel layout keeps the loads in the sail under control.

One of the easiest sails to ride. Works great for beginners as well as the top pros. It does what you tell it to!

We used the new 2-Ply laminate for the cross as we again found a 10% savings in the top of the sail, and the soft feeling was an extra gain for the range of use of this sail. “I worked on the leech twist as well, making it more smooth top to bottom to get a more balanced power output” comments Peter. The evolved radial panel layout balances the load distribution within the sail body and the 6 batten configuration with 4 tube battens makes the Cross ultra stable in the higher wind range. Now all sizes fit on the 2 mast concept and all sails are both compatible with SDM or RDM masts. We also dropped the 7.4 size as it did not make sense for this size- better to go with the Matrix.

Outlines and luff lengths have been adjusted to use the least amount of masts possible. We also eliminated unnecessary roundings in the outline and re-worked the twist to get a smoother handling. We kept the Dacron luff panel as it is the best solution for a neutral behavior.

Current technical specifications! All rights reserved to improve / modify / change any product at anytime.

The ultimate no-cam free ride machine. Purpose built to get up to speed early, blast through the lulls and give you the feeling of freedom! A moderate boom length keeps the sail perfectly balanced while the cross boom batten puts the center of effort low and in your hands. This makes the sail easy to control so you can go fast and not look back. Simple to rig and boasting a huge wind range, the Matrix will satisfy any free rider looking for a good time.

“For 2013 I worked on the twisting pattern of the leech, I opened it a bit more down low to gain a more balanced and progressive feeling. Also it has more profile in the front to pull more in the low end”says Peter. Unnecessary roundings in the outline have been eliminated. The radial panel layout combined with the colored C-Film make it very distinguishable and long lasting due to the high UV resistance and intelligent construction. We also improved the tube batten specs which further the performance and stability of the sail. We put a vario top on the 6,0 and 6,5 to make it compatible with a 460 mast and extended the sizes compatible with this mast.

This no cam rig can race like a slalom sail, turn like a wave sail and put a smile on anyone! Easy to rig and tune, this is the ultimate free ride machine.

“As with all 2013 sails I cut excess roundings off the out-line of the Cosmic. I modified the leech twist param-eters to make it open a bit more low as we learned from the development of the Vapor sails. This makes the twist more smooth and the power output more balanced and progressive. The shape in front at the 2 cambers was increased to make it pull more from the front. As with all our flatwater sails we used the new colored and UV resistant C-Film which is like a trade-mark of the new Gaastra sails making them immedi-ately recognizable on the water. The radial panel lay-out smoothly distributes the loads inside the sail body and enhances stability and performance” comments Peter.

FACTS

The Cosmic is basically the sister of the Matrix with 2 cambers. It fits in the same category of freeride sails but features a slightly wider mast sleeve and 2 small cambers. The cambers give the sail a more locked in feeling as they keep the profile more stable in one place. The slightly wider mast sleeve at the camber area has zippers that make rigging ultra easy. The rotation of the cambers is super soft and smooth. The Cosmic has good power and planes very early while maintaining excep-tional performance through a wide range of use. The outline with the cross boom bat-ten combined with the dropped clew keeps the center of effort low and the boom length moderate. Closing the gap is enhanced by the low foot outline.

It will be hard to find any sail that will come close to the two Cam Cosmic. A locked in shape that delivers greatness for all flat water conditions.

The Savage is our high performance no cam sail. It resembles its cambered sister, the Phantom in the 7 batten configuration with a dropped tack. These sails share many of the features of our race winning Vapor in a more accessible and easy package. The additional tube batten gives added stability and higher wind range at the top end. The drop tack allows a better close of the gap and a more tensioned and fuller foot outline. The speed potential is a couple of knots higher than the Matrix. The drop clew with the outhaul pulley is more pronounced producing a moderate boom length with a relatively wide sail chord at this point, adding both power and control. Having no cams, the rotation in this quasi race sail is effortless; this is particularly nice on the smaller sizes in strong wind. A 5,5 has been added and the biggest size is a new 8,6.

The first thing you notice on the 2013 Savage is the dropped clew that replaced the inset clew. We wanted to focus on weight savings and simplicity so we decided to change the outline configuration at the clew for all our high performance sails. This also helps to reduce the swing weight at the clew. We reduced the width of many reinforcements around the perimeter of the sail and reduced the length of the mini battens for the same reason, all taking off unnecessary material without af-fecting function and durability. The new Sav-age twists lower in the leech for a smooth and progressive release. A more rounded entry gives it more pull forward and low. The new colored C-Film is part of the package as is the trademark radial panel layout.

All the advantages of a race sail without all the disadvantages of cambers! Jibes like a free ride sail, has speed like a race sail. What more could you ask for?

The 2013 Phantom underwent the same diet as our other high performance sails. We reduced the width of some re-inforcements around the perimeter of the sail and reduced the length of the mini battens, all taking off ounces of un-necessary material without affecting function or durability. The inset clew has been replaced by a high performance dropped clew at the cross batten. Simi-lar to the evolution of the Vapor, the twist down low in the leech has been en-hanced to get a more progressive and smooth behavior and the profile at the front cambers is increased to make the sail pull more from the front. “I modified the angle of the top battens to stabi-lize more the head of the sail. FACTS

The Phantom is the cambered sister of the Savage and the little brother of the Vapor. It features 7 battens and 3 cambers and a moderately wide mast sleeve. A Drop tack makes it easy to close the gap, drop clew with outhaul pulley and pronounced cross batten drop are standard features for this high performance sail. Two big race cams and one small cam at the foot batten lock in shape and stability. The Phantom much like the Vapor has an aerodynamic boom cutout closure with neoprene to keep water and air turbulence away. The top half of the mast sleeve is made of KI05 aramid laminate, which is light and strong and due to its flexing properties produces our SAS system (Shock absorption system), a dynamic twist that absorbs the chop and produces instant acceleration. This sail is more than capable of winning races!

Rig and Rip! The Phantom is tuned and ready to go straight away. Easy to rig and fast to blast. Watch out racers, the Phantom is coming.

Win races

No compromise performance

Maximum speed and acceleration

First we started working on new outlines with higher clew positions and a narrower head to reduce the swing weight during the jibes. To compensate for

that we had 2 options, lengthening the luff or lengthening the boom, we chose the latter as a longer mast has also a negative swing weight

and it helped to bring some more natural pow-er and acceleration to the sails. Next step was to improve the leech twist and tension pat-terns. We have been looking for a smooth-er twist with a more open lower and mid leech. We also wanted to push the profile more forward and to have a flatter mid aft section of the sailbody. For that we heavily reworked the luff curve num-bers and shaping points in the seams, further refining the batten position-ing and angles.

One thing the team really wanted was a lighter sail. We achieved this by eliminating excess ma-terial from the sails, without af-fecting durability, eliminating the inset clew and develop-ing new lighter back ends for the tube battens. Many prototype rounds have been tested by our international team during the whole sea-son around the world.

The Vapor is Gaastra’s full racing sail. It is a no compromise design that undergoes continuous devel-opment work throughout the year. As soon as the 2012 model was finished and put in production we continued designing new ideas and further evolving the concepts we started working on 2 years ago.

The latest 2012 model has proven itself on the race course with the best racers in the world. Ross Williams had several top 5 finishes and the Vapor continues to combine speed, rapid acceleration and ease of use into the build parameters. For 2013 we have further enhanced the acceleration as well as the top end. We have combined a new outline, altered batten configuration as well as luffcurve, utilizing our trademark racing cambers, SAS sleeve, C-Film, Radial panel layout, aerodynamic boom cutout closure to produce our greatest racing sail to date, one that we are very proud of.

The Vapor sails are the cleanest most advanced race sails built by Gaastra to date!We choose winning! If your goal is the same the new Vapor will take you there!

MP: It has been a long time in the making but you finally notched your first world title- what do you attribute this to?

RW: It has been a long time coming and I am super happy now its happened. I think everything fell into place this year. The Gaastra Vapor sails and Vapor 2 board are the best pieces of equipment on the market and I think this made things much easier for me to win. Of course I was racing good, maybe the best I ever have in formula. If you ask the other sailor they would probably agree that my tactics were sharp and I was racing every race with little or no mistakes. Basically I think when your kit is good, you can focus more on my racing game and things feel like they came easier and all the years of training and testing really pay off.

MP: Do you have a new program that you are working on or is it just experience coming into play? RW: I have the same plan as I alway had, to try to be the best all round windsurfer I can be. I really enjoy every area and discipline in windsurf, its such a amazing sport. I just want to be the best. I think over the years experience has taught me what it takes to be a champion, the things you need to do and the things you should not do in order to win.

MP: You are now a veteran out there, how big of a role does that play in your success?

RW: I dont really see myself as a veteran, I think I have my best years still to come especially in slalom and formula. I am lucky that I have been able to compete for so long in the sport I love and that cant be a bad thing. I think I am coming into my prime and looking forward to many more years of competing

MP: Who was your toughest competitor out there and why?

RW: Well, this year it was for sure my team mate Arnon Dagan. Having the same gear as him, and training together all the time, I knew before each championship that we would be the fighting it out at the top. Then you also have people like Steve Allan, who has won the world title a few times before and he is such an impressive sailor, he knows what is takes to win. Then there are a whole group of guys that train formula all the time and any of them can win races.

Page 67: Katalog Gaastra 2013

67

MP: What single piece of equipment has made the most difference in all your testing?

RW: I cant say that there is just one. Its the whole thing. You got to have the whole package tested and ready to rock. I am just grateful to everyone involved with the Gaastra/Tabou development for producing such good kit and this world title is the results of all that hard work.

MP: Do you think this win will help you and your confidence on the PWA tour? What is different for you when it comes to Slalom vs Formula?

RW: I think for sure it will help, but formula and slalom are two completely different things, and these days its getting really hard to be competitive in more then one discipline. I feel that the level in every discipline has jumped up in the last 2 to 3 years as now sailors tend to just specialise in either, wave, slalom, freestyle or formula, there are very few guys left that are able to compete at the top level across the disciplines. So for me doing 3 disciplines has maybe effected my ability to reach a PWA world title in one! because I am spreading myself too thin. I think I was able to reach my goal in formula because I have been doing upwind racing since i was about 9 years old. So now I have a title in formula I think I will settle down to really train hard for slalom and see if I have what it take to reach the top of the PWA tour.

MP: Congratulations, what are you doing to celebrate?

RW: I celebrated by driving 16 hours all through the night to get to turkey on time to start racing..... So in short I have not done anything.... I think I will wait till I am less busy.

If you want no excuses for ultimate performance, this is your mast! Built out of the highest grade carbon fiber available, the race 100 is crafted to generate instant response. Acceleration and reflex timing are key to winning races. Our team demands the best in the business and this masts reflects that.

Light and strong the 100% RDM leads the way forward in mast technology. The dynamic flex pattern allows the rig to breath from the bottom section feeding the entire sail with life. The mast continues to flex more and more as the wind increases! We added a new 340 length to complete the line.

Freeride ease that is price oriented. Produced with the same technology as the Gaastra 100, just a little less Carbon. Bend characteristics come from the 100% Race mast- the perfect combination to value and performance is right here.

Get the unique Gaastra bend characteristics in a lower carbon content mast. Ideal for budget minded sailors, the strength to weight durability is unmatched! The bend is the same as the 100% RDM and this mast will handle all conditions thrown at it- Freeride or Wave, it will do it all!

BOOMSThe time has come for Gaastra to step up to the plate with the ultimate competition boom. Currently we are finalizing the production of one of the best booms ever to hit the market. We have 2 sizes for wave and freestyle, along with 3 race sizes each having monocoque one piece carbon tail pieces. The Outline curves are optimized based on target sail sizes and the back ends come with different widths for each boom length making for a perfectly integrated rig. The Race back ends will come with a built in pulley system for adjustable outhauls.

Oversized front and tail sections for increased stiffness, reduced diameter in the grip area for increased comfort and ergonomics. A textured grip section in the grip area increases the traction. A stiff mast cup for direct force transmission between the boom and mast makes the connection rock solid.A long closing lever for easy opening and closure while rigging.

The new high tech Gaastra front end is built out of reinforced Plastic for more stiffness, better power load for more performance and lighter weight for better handling.

The new monocoque arms and back ends are built out of the best 100% Carbon quality composite tech-nology. The all new Gaastra molds are produced under extreme heat and pressure to reach the highest level of carbon composite quality.

CARBON LINES

GaastraRaceBoom100%CarbonThe All- New Gaastra Race Boom comes in 3 sizes: 180 200 and 220. A no compromise racing boom extremely stiff and light. In particular the monocoque molded tail with integrated pulleys is super light and ultra stiff reducing considerably the swing weight which is a very important factor for jibing around the marks of the racing course. The front and back sections are oversized, properly making it the stiffest and lightest boom on the market.

GaastraWaveBoom100%CarbonOur newly developed Wave Boom comes in 2 sizes: 140 and 150. A super reduced diameter and partially V shaped grip section for the best ergonomics and over-sized front section for maximum stiffness. The monocoque molded tail features an intelligent plastic add on compo-nent with a rapid outhaul fix system along with a double protection pad for the carbon tail for rock encounters.

BOOMSThe Blue line Monocoque V Grip continues to be a great option in our range. With a super stiff V, the boom combines a decade of riding wisdom with the futuristic performance and no compromises! Stiffness and lightweight are your friends and that is what the Gaastra V-Grip is all about. The double cavity alloy section saves weight without sacrificing stiffness and durability. The V shape walks the line between ample power and forgiving flex, EVA cushioned comfort and straight-line stability. The Monocoque V Grip is for all those who are looking for a lightweight high performance boom in all conditions.

The Black line is uniquely tapered to provide extra stiffness in the back section of the boom. Tests indicate it to be 20% stiffer than the Green line! The new boom head provides a tight connection to the mast while a double push pin operating system guarantees strength and durability. Different bends for each size range make this boom a perfect compromise to carbon performance.
