FOURTH GENERATION LASIK UNIT ACQUIRED IN OPHTHALMOLOGY DEPARTMENT

After cataract and posterior segment diseases, Refractive Surgery is the latest addition to the range of quality services being provided by the Eye Department at MGIMS. LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is a procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye, using an excimer laser. Refractive errors account for 7% cases of blindness which can be corrected by changing curvature of the cornea. Most patients are young. People, who require glasses or contact lenses for distant vision may avail this treatment, and may become much less dependent on optical correction, or in many cases, not require glasses or contact lenses at all. The treatment involves reshaping the surface of the eye. This is achieved with an instrument called an Excimer laser. An Excimer Laser Unit with Microtome and Corneal Topography System has been recently acquired in the Department of Ophthalmology for this purpose.

There are about 200 installations of the LASIK machines in India with most of them being centered in the private clinics and in bigger cities. There are only 5 LASIK machines in the Government setup in large centre like

AIIMS & MAMC in Delhi and PGI, Chandigarh with the nearest one available to us at JJ Hospital, Mumbai. In the private sector the procedure costs anything from Rs 25,000 and above. This cost makes it out of reach from the common man. The LASIK Centre at MGIMS has the aim of providing excellence & affordability in Laser Vision Correction. It has brought down the cost of this procedure for the common man.

LASIK surgery machines are also evolving with new cutting edge technology, improving the outcomes. The machine at LASIK centre, MGIMS, is the latest fourth generation machine imported from Germany and costs about Rs 2.5 crores. As a result of refractive surgery, many of our patients are able to greatly improve their vision and eliminate or reduce their dependence on glasses and contact lenses.

Our institute has accorded top priority to development of all surgical sciences to meet the existing global standards. To this end, it was decided to construct a modern operation theatre (OT) complex with all latest amenities and gadgets. As per our tradition, the Bhoomi Pujan ceremony of the proposed OT complex was held at MGIMS, Sevagram on 14th January 2013 by Shri Dhiru S Mehta, President, KHS. MGIMS plans to set up 11 state of the art Operation Theatres to cater the surgical needs of the rural patients visiting this hospital. Dr (Mrs.) P Narang, (Secretary-KHS), Shri PL Tapadiya (Member-KHS), Dr BS Garg (Dean-MGIMS),Dr SP Kalantri (Medical Superintendent-Kasturba Hospital), faculty members, staff and students were present on the occasion.

The Korku adivasi population of Amravati district has no access to basic medical facilities, which has a telling effect on the health of the entire population in general and the expectant mothers, infants and children in particular. Melghat Project, an initiative of Kasturba Health Society was started with the objective of helping this indigenous population. With Dr S Chhabra as the co-ordinator, this effort is finally bearing fruits with more than 8000 patients having availed the OPD services of the hospital. Surgeries like Caesarean sections, Hysterectomies, laparotomies etc. are being carried out at the hospital. In order to extend the benefit of services of other medical faculties, a Multi-Speciality Camp was conducted on 8-9th February 2013 with co-operation from specialists and staff of MGIMS Sevagram. During the two-day camp, a total of 1036 patients were treated for various ailments and 24 patients requiring surgical treatment underwent required procedures. Due to the higher than expected turn out of patients requiring surgical management, 11 patients were given an appointment on 27th and 28th of the same month, when another surgical team performed surgeries on them. Patients requiring further investigations and complicated surgical procedures were brought to Sevagram where they were operated.

The adage "go outside and play" was a staple command for the baby boom generation. Today's faster-paced life, coupled with electronic games, television and increasing technology aimed at impressionable minds, makes playing outside all the more important for children. To nurture this philosophy, a new children's park has been set up in our campus. The park is equipped with all new slides, see-saws and swings. Playing on them is not just fun for the children but also a step ahead for their mental and physical development. Evenings in the campus are now full of energy and cries of joy.

7th March 2013.

The “Sushruta Award” is given to the best scientific research work carried out by a postgraduate student of our Institute. The final presentation round for these awards was organized by the Academy of Medical Sciences in the month of February'13. Among the five participants, Dr Pallavi Dhanvijay from the Dept of Pharmacology secured the first position for her presentation on ''Evaluation of antiplatelet aggregation activity of aspirin and clopidogrel in patients of acute coronary syndrome : in the scenario of antiplatelet drug resistance' '.

The Academy of Basic Medical Sciences also conducted presentations by students of 2012 batch. Ms Chetna Periwal of 2012 batch won the first prize for her presentation on “Parotid Gland 'among the five qualifying contestants.

Dr Tejinder Singh, Vice- Principal of CMC Ludhiana was the lead faculty. The participants of this workshop were the young faculty of the institute who had donned the mantle of mentors in the Institute's Mentoring Programme. The workshop saw enthusiastic mentors interacting with Dr Tejinder and clarifying their roles and responsibilities as a mentor. They discussed dilemmas they faced: about knowing their mentors versus appearing intrusive, how to break the ice with mentees, and also about forming a bond with students. The highlight of the session was hearing undergraduate students speak frankly about what they thought about the existing mentoring programme and how it needed to be modified to suit their needs. Dr Tejinder Singh later had a special session with MEU members where they discussed how to impart study skills to students.

On 8-9 March 2013, a Workshop on Construction of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) was conducted by the MEU. Dr Tejinder Singh who has a special interest in assessment was the lead faculty. The educational impact of using MCQs was thoroughly debated and discussed in interactive sessions. The focus of the workshop was on how to use MCQs to promote learning. Many myths about MCQs being quick and easy formats of assessment were blasted when participants learnt through hands on sessions that framing a single good quality MCQ meant a lot of brainwork and sweat!

The Basic Workshop on Medical Education Technology for faculty was conducted on 19-21st March 2013. The MGIMS faculty of the Medical Education Unit conducted the workshop in a highly interactive fashion which came in for praise from the MCI observer, Dr SR Tankhiwale.

The Maharashtra Medical Council has allotted credit points for participants and faculty for all three workshops.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY WORKSHOPResearch methodology workshop was organized by Research Committee and Medical Education Unit of MGIMS, Sevagram on 7-12 January and 18-22 February' 13. The workshop was approved by MUHS, Nashik. Now all our guides have undergone this training.

CME on safety of medical equipment was organized by the Department of Anesthesiology on 22nd January 2013. The guest speakers were Prof. Allan Murray from Newcastle University, UK and Dr Niranjan Khambete from Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum. The issues related with the use of medical devices in clinical situations and their safety were discussed in detail for the whole day. The CME was well attended by the staff of the operation theatre and also by the faculty of our Institute.

The Department of Anatomy organized a CME on “A Review of Clinical Anatomy of Kidney in Context of Present Day Needs” on 24th January'13 which was attended by delegates from all over Maharashtra. Dr RA Kamble (Anatomy), Dr (Brigadier) Chander Mohan (Interventional Radiology) and Dr Pradeep Vyavhare (Urology) were the guest speakers. The coordinated deliberation between the Anatomist and the Surgeons clearly brought out the interdependency of the two specialties and the utility of Anatomy in clinical practice.
