1 Dal Lake

The houseboats anchored on the Dal areoften huge and spacious. Over the years,houseboats grew in number with manyflaunting new designs, comforts andoutlook. If you can accommodate yourself in

one of these you will feel yourself closer tothe heritage and culture of Kashmir.

2 Shalimar Bagh

Commissioned by Jahangir for NoorJehan in 1619, Shalimar Bagh is afour-terraced fiesta of chinarsand watercourses with an exquisitehill as its immediatebackdrop. A very prominent featureof the garden is the arched recesses behindthe fountains. These recesses used to be litwith lamps, giving the fountains a majestic,dreamy look.

The garden is located at a distance of 15km from the Tourist Reception Centre andcovers an area of around 12.40 hectares

(30.6 acres). An October visitamong the flaming autumnal chinarsis perhaps even more desirable thanthe floral riot in spring. All year roundthough, the most lovely thing inShalimar is a baradari, asummer house, which is today afading gracious structure, with blackmarble pillars (from Pampore) andgorgeous painted ceilings.

Nishat Bagh is carved out of a hillside. Itcomprises 12 terraced levels rich withmagnificent old chinars and rows offlowers. It has a beautiful Mughal centralwater channel with several fountains.Seen from the top, the gardencascades down and reaches out tothe Dal Lake. The topmost terrace isthe zenana garden. 

Nishat Garden was commissioned byNur Jehan’s brother Asif Khan in 1633.According to legend, Shah Jahan,Jahangir’s son, was so taken by thegarden that he expressed hisappreciation thrice to Asif Khan in thehope of getting it as a gift but to no avail.This led to a minor falling outbetween the two; for a whileShah Jahan actually turned off thewater supply for Nishat, which camethrough his Shalimar!

4 Chashm-e-shahi

Meaning Royal Spring, Cheshmashahi isone of the three Mughal Gardens inSrinagar.It was Shah Jahan’s governor AliMardan Khan who built the small butperfect Chashma Shahi Gardens on theslopes of the Zaberwan Hill in 1632.

The garden consists of a pavilion and threeterraces. It is famous for the natural springthat flows from it. Its location, being at anelevated plane above the city, provides apanoramic view of the city. The state’sgovernor house is located nearby. Thefamous Pari Mahal, Tulip garden and theCity Botanical Garden is also located nearCheshmashahi. The garden is at a distanceof 9 kms from the Tourist Reception Centre.

5 Dastgir Sahib

Old Srinagar,Srinagar, Jammu andKashmir, India

One of the most famous and truly beautifulshrines of Srinagar, Dastgir Sahib inKhanyar, was burnt down in2012. The shrine featuresextraordinary communal harmony andsyncretism that has been its part forcenturies. Since Srinagar’swooden buildings are usedto meeting this fate, the shrine willno doubt rise beautifully from itsashes once again.
