    Fundamental Right to Water

Water Is the basic need for the

    survival of the human beings

and is part of right to life as

enshrined in Article 21 of the

    Constitution of India.

What does it mean when we say that we

have a fundamental right to water

    guaranteed under law?

    Access to good quality drinking water;

Availability of sufficient water for all

necessary functions to keep life healthy

such as cooking, toilet use, personal

    hygiene and water for livestock

no discrimination on the basis of caste,

    religion and gender

Access to water shall not be affected by

    the economic capacity of individuals

Duty of the government (which includes

from village panchayat to the centra

Government) to take all possible steps to

make clean and sufficient water available

for all without any discrimination and

Duty of the Government to ensure that

the fundamental right to water is not

voilated or affected by private parties

  • Half of the world's hospital beds are filled with

people suffering from water related illnesses.

According to United Nations, a child dies from

a water related disease every 15 seconds.

3.41 million people die from water, sanitation

    and hygiene-related causes each year

    ateW r Cdlr rio sisW

Nearly 70 percent of the world is covered by water, only 2.5 percent of it is fresh. Only 0.007 percent of the planet's water is available to fuel and

    feed its 6.8 billion people.

780 Million lack access to safe

    drinking water

Women spend 200 million hours a day

    collecting water

Depleted aquifers lead to cutback in grain

harvest which leads to more food shortages

and higher costs of grains. The water crisis can

    lead to hunger crisis

The water and sanitation crisis claims more

lives through disease than any war claims

through guns. It is estimated that nearly 10% of

the global disease burden could be reduced

    through improved water supply, sanitation,

    hygiene, and water resource management.

There are 9 rivers flowing through Karnataka out of which, 8 of them flow to Bay of

Bengal. Yet, the measures to provide safe drinking water to the people of Karnataka

    are failing.

Deteriorating quality of groundwater is a serious concern as groundwater is the major

source for drinking water particularly for rural drinking water supply.

In about 4500 villages in Karnataka, groundwater is not fit for drinking purpose

    because of quality problem.

Groundwater sources are getting dried fast due to over-exploitation. More than 3 lakh

dug-wells have dried and this has severe adverse implications on drinking water

    supply and irrigation.

Inadequate drinking water supply is more acute in some parts of the State, particularly

in drought prone districts such as Bellary, Bijapur, Bidar, Dharwad and Gulbara.

According to Rural Development Report 2010 (Karnataka), As many as 236 villages

om 13 Districts of Karnataka have been facing severe drinking water problem

Major contaminants in Water found in Karnataka are,

    Arsenic

    Flourine

    Salinity
