Szombathely is a significant centre for trade and transportation and is situated 0 kms from the Austrian border. After the change of the political system and due to its closeness to the border, several multinational companies have established premises here and that has resulted in the revival of the town’s economic pros-perity.

The town boasts of two colleges which have a highly positive effect on the town’s cultural and intellectual life. It is very proud of its Roman heritage which proves that once the town was one of the most significant settlements of the province known as

Pannonia. The Roman city was demolished by an earthquake which explains the origin of the German name for the town which is Steinamanger.

In medieval times the town reduced in importance. Its fortunes however took an

upturn during the Baroque period when it increased in importance due to it becoming the

centre of the area’s bishopric. It was at this time that the Baroque buildings

in the town centre were constructed, as well as the cathedral,

which is one of the big-gest churches in the

country. Today’s town centre is characterized by an eclectic combination of buildings

built around the turn of the cen-tury. If you have more time to

spend here, depending on your interests, it might prove worthwhile visiting the fol-lowing places.

Cathedral: Built at the end of the eighteenth century in Baroque style. During the latter days of World War Two it was hit by bombs. Although it has been rebuilt, the frescoes have not been restored.

Bishop’s Palace: It was built at the same time as the cathed-ral. Some of the rooms contain a museum (Sala Terrana) but most of the museum requires special permission if one wants to visit. The Garden of Ruins: It can be found in the vicinity of the cathedral. In addition to the remnants of the ancient Christian basi-lica built at the end of the Roman period, one can see the remnants of the Amber Road which used to connect Rome with the Baltic Sea.4 Iseum: Here can be found the remnants of a sanctuary from the Roman period, which was built to honor the goddess Isis who originat-ed in Egypt. As only a few columns and the relief have survived from the sanctuary, only the reconstruction of the original, made of con-rete, can be seen. A more spectacular transformation is being planned.

Synagogue: Before the war a large, wealthy Jewish community lived in Szombathely and they were re-sponsible for building this huge synagogue. Due to deportation the number of Jewish citizens is now a mere fraction of the original num-ber. The damaged synagogue was unused for a period and almost did not survive. Following restoration it has been used as a concert hall.6 Kámon Arboretum: This is a large park situated at the edge of the town and contains a number of rare plants.

7 Faculty of Health Sciences: (An integral part of the University of Pécs) In the main buildings, as well as the educational premises, a hall of residence can be found.

8 Berzsenyi Dániel College: Originally its purpose was to train teachers but nowadays there are other faculties as well. It has more than 000 students. The club in the basement is a favorite meeting point for students. Sometime parties are organized here.
