New events added,while favorites remain

The first Kaposia Days was organized over 40 yearsago with just a handful of activities designed to fostera sense of community in South St. Paul.

Today, the event is bigger and better than ever, andincludes street dances, fireworks and parades.

Throughout the years, new events have been addedlike the all-week Medallion Hunt. Participants in thehunt use clues to search for a medallion the size of a

hockey puck thats hidden somewhere in South St.Paul. The hunt starts on Monday, June 20. Clues will

be given out twice a day, once at 9 a.m., and once at 5p.m. Complete rules can be found at kaposiadays.org.

While this event requires deductive reasoning andslow, contemplative thinking in order to piece togetherclues, other events require survival instincts and quickreactions, such as the water balloon dodgeball tourna-ment.

The dodgeball event will take place on Sunday, June26 from noon to 2 p.m., at Central Square, 100 SeventhAve. N. in South St. Paul. The entry fee is $15 per

team if registered before June 23. Entries after June 23will be $20 per team.

bag throwing Cornhole Tournamentwill take place at McMorrow Field on

their little ones in the Cute Kid Con-test. Now in its 19th year, the photocontest winners will be displayed in thewindows of the South St. Paul Educa-tional Foundation, 521 Marie Ave.

Parents can always enter their babyinto the Baby Races as well.

What its all aboutThese are entertaining events, but in

reality, the festival is not all about pit-ting community members against each

other. Its actually about the opposite.Over four decades ago, when civic

leaders were searching for a name forthe new festival, they didnt have to lookfar. They picked Kaposia, the name ofthe Dakota settlement that existed whenthe first European explorers arrived.Kaposia was situated on the land where

South St. Paul is now located.Every summer, the village of the

Kaposia welcomed more than 400members of the Mdewakanton-band ofDakota.

In the same spirit, Kaposia Dayshopes to bring the community togetherfor a weekend of friendship buildingand family-friendly activities.

The festival is also steeped in tradi-tions, featuring classic events at theVFW hall, the royalty coronation and

the parades.Each year, it hosts Kaposia Native

Village at Central Square, 100 SeventhAve. N., which presents displays andactivities highlighting Native Americanculture led by volunteers dressed in tra-ditional clothing.

of the Kaposia Days volunteer board.Every year we try to think up new ideas of things to

do, Grevas says.On Saturday, June 25 from 8 to 10:30 a.m., get your

kids together and visit the fishing clinic at the South St.Paul Fishing Pier, under the Wakota Bridge. The Depart-ment of Natural Resources will be there to help young-sters learn how to identify fish and the different parts ofa fish.

Kids will learn how to make a fishing pole and tie dif-ferent knots.

And, of course, there will be fishing. Free bait will beprovided, as well as a limited number of poles.

I just thought itd be kind of neat. I think fishing is agreat sport for families and kids and such, so I thought itwould be a great time for parents to bring their childrendown there to learn about it, Grevas says.

The Boat Parade hosted by River Heights Marina willbegin on Sunday, June 26, at noon. Grevas says he is try-ing to get more activities by the river.

If we can get a little boat parade going, kids and par-ents can stand and watch the boats go by, Grevas says.

Well-deserved recognitionThis years parade grand marshal will

be retiring DFL state Sen. Jim Metzen.Born in South St. Paul, Metzen is nostranger to the community.

Metzen was only 22, when he servedon the South St. Paul City Council. Itwas the start of a long political careerthat now spans 50 years.

He grew up with South St. Paul poli-tics his dad was a Dakota Countycommissioner and council member inSouth St. Paul.

Metzen is one of the Legislatures lon-gest-serving members, having first beenelected to the state House in 1974, atthe age of 30. He was then elected tothe Senate in 1986 and served as Senatepresident from 2003-2011.

Metzen says he began attending Kapo-sia Days events right from the begin-ning, 41 years ago. His favorite parts:the parade floats, and all the excitementand activity around town during the fes-tival weekend.

Being selected as grand marshal was alittle overwhelming for him.

Its quite an honor and big deal. Itsvery special, Metzen says.

After announcing he would not runfor another term this past winter dueto a reoccurrence of cancer, the popularpolitician received several recognitionsduring the legislative session at the stateCapitol.

Now to be recognized by the city isa huge privilege for the family, says hisson John.

Its great that he is still alive to seethe appreciation and the great apprecia-tion of people from South St. Paul andthe community have given him for allthe hard work hes done over the manyyears, John Metzen says.

Jimmy Francis, a Kaposia Days boardmember, recalls that last year when thecommittee was considering its grandmarshal for the 2016 parade, he nomi-nated Metzen because of all the work he

has done for the community.Metzen has been participating in

Kaposia Days since day one, Francissays. Normally, he is in the parade

Paul, Francis says. Now hes in the history books.... People in the parade will hopefully be able to see

him in a new light because he will be at the front ofthe parade, not running for any office but gettingthe accolades for all hes done for our communities.

Its not just for adultsKaposia Days is not just for adults.Were working hard to get families involved. I know

some of the things are more adult oriented, and weretrying to get the whole family involved because its a cel-ebration of [all of] South St. Paul, Grevas says.

Kids will be decked out in patriotic colors at theChildrens Parade on Saturday, June 25, at 10:30 a.m.This year the kiddie parade is themed Red, Whiteand Blue, and starts with entrants lining up at 10:15at Fifth Avenue North and Southview Boulevard.The parade concludes at Central Square, 100 SeventhAve. N.

Back again is the Kite Fly on Sunday, June 26, from10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be free kites for everyoneat Roosevelt Field, 537 Fifth Ave. S.

Meg Simon, 18, has always loved prin-cesses.

So when she decided to run for Kapo-sia Days royalty last year, she envisioned

herself as a princess. She says she neverimagined that she would be crowned thequeen.

Simon had friends whose older siblingshad run for royalty in previous years,and she would always tag along to thecoronations and watch the slideshowvideos.

I would see how much fun it was,Simon recalls.

Then last summer she and friend Mol-lie Ray decide if one of them ran for theSouth St. Paul royal court, they bothwould.

An unexpected crownThroughout the entire process, Simon

believed the judges would think shewasnt outgoing enough to be queen.

At the coronation, she remembers,When they called the first two prin-cesses, I was like OK, Im sure out of it.Im not getting it. When I got queen, it

was so weird because I never thought ofmyself as getting that title,

But she has embraced the role, servingas an ambassador for the city, and attend-ing events throughout the year alongwith the two princesses, Kaitlyn Croweand Mollie Ray.

Shes also has gotten a look behind thescenes at all the planning and organiz-ing that goes into putting on the annualKaposia Days festival.

She adds that part of being an ambas-sador was doing two service projects thatwould benefit the community.

Its kind of cool to see how much ourcommunity needs us and what we cando for our community, says Simon, whois the daughter of Jill and the late BruceSimon.

Looking backSimon grew up watching the Kaposia

Days parade with her family and friends.Then last year she was in it.

She says it was especially fun to lookout on the crowds and see the little girlsor boys get so excited. Theyll try to copythe [royal] wave. Seeing the smiles ontheir face and how they light up is just so

cool to see.The night before the 2015 parade, she

drove the route and looked at all thechairs already set out. On this paraderoute, she says there is not one sectionthat doesnt have spectators.

Everyone comes out to the parade,and you literally see everyone from thecommunity come out, Simon says.

The night after the coronation, Simonwent to the Kaposia Days fireworksshow. She says as a candidate no one

paid particular attention to her, but onceshe had the queens tiara atop her head,things changed.

You just see all the little kids lookingat you and wanting pictures. That wasthe first night it came out and was coolto see how much you touched those littlekids, Simon says.

A little bit of adviceNow that her reign is coming to an

end, Simon encourages the girls run-ning for royalty this year to keep an openmind. When Simon was first crowned,she says she was very shy.

The South St. Paul High School seniorsaid serving as Kaposia Days queen

helped her open up and become moresocial and active.

Her advice for this years royalty: takeit all in and do the most you can.

Try to go to the most activities [pos-sible], especially in your community. Theevents just in our community are prob-ably one of my favorites, and they havethe most impact on us.
