What should I do with a 48-year-old car? Drive it to Phoenix. Change the oil, of course. This trip might rack up 3,000 miles, but I'm not sure. Why would you take a 48-year-old car on a 3,000 mile trip? Because it's a '69 MGB which has 168,000 miles on it. So, why not? Eight days of clothes for both Monica and myself, my man-bag, and her toiletry bag.

Saturday morning, February 25th arrived and it's 26° outside. So what. The MG is winter-ready. It has a working heater and we put the hardtop on last November. We are weather-ready. But who cares. We are headed to Phoenix for the Royals' Spring Training. It's warm in Phoenix, isn't it? It might be, but we have to traverse Kansas, parts of Oklahoma, and the panhandle of Texas. Will it be 70° there? Heck no. Plus Flagstaff gets snow this time of year. Just because we can, we leave on Saturday morning. Our original plan was to leave Sunday morning. Sometimes God is looking out for you. Leaving a day early on Saturday at 6:00 a.m. means we would get to Tucumcari, NM by Saturday evening, spend the night there, and drive through Flagstaff during the day on Sunday and arriving in Phoenix (Surprise, AZ) Sunday evening. Sunday night and into Monday afternoon, Flagstaff got over a foot of snow in the city proper and almost two feet up in the higher elevations. So now we are already down in the valley and woke up to rain. Everyone in Phoenix is happy as a lark that it's raining – and plenty of it, too. In fact, they called the

Royals game in Peoria (suburb) in the 7th inning that day due to the heavy rains, but the Royals won anyway. Monday night, we went out to eat and the rains continued. On the way back to the motel, it rained and rained; the streets were flooding. It's so flat, there's no place for the water to run off. The locals are happy because water there is at a premium.

Tuesday was a free day and wanting to get away from all the people and traffic, we traveled northwest to Wickenburg, AZ, a historic quaint little town with just our kind of shopping – antiques. Wickenburg also had a couple of places we liked, including a deli café run by Mennonites or Amish. Great food and a

loaf of sourdough bread and we were back on the road. We stayed off the interstate and took the scenic roads; some straight and boring, so we took 203rd street just north of Phoenix. Off to my left was a fence camouflaging what's on the other side, with signs on the fence saying to "Keep Out, Private Property". Our Garmin saw roads on the other side and when we clicked on the huge complex of roads, it said it was the "Chrysler Proving Grounds" – in the middle of nowhere!

The rain had finally stopped, but the rivers and streams running alongside the roads were running faster than we were moving. Remember, MGs sit low to the ground, so we were careful to get back to the motel. In fact, watching the news that night at the motel, they had one fatality and one water rescue. People were trying to cross high running waters, floating minivans and trucks.

Wednesday is the only day we chose a game, our first trip to Phoenix, to watch the Royals play against the World Series winners, Chicago Cubs. Because of the Cubs, the game was sold out – 8,000 to 10,000 fans. 70° was forecasted, but reached 75°and sunny at 1:00 p.m. My right side got sunburned. We sat just beyond the 3rd base line, only 10 rows up from the bottom. The Royals just happen to come out from the back on that side, so we got to see all the players come onto the field,

some stopping and giving autographs on the way, mostly to "old" retired folks! Surprise Stadium is shared by the Texas Rangers and is the prettiest stadium in Phoenix. Well, the Royals lost that day, 7-4, but still an exciting game. We're thinking of doing this again next year – and only if we drive an MG!

The trip home seemed much longer. Thursday morning, we checked out of the motel and traveled to Sedona to spend the night with Monica's classmate and his wife. Deb and Larry showed us around Sedona that afternoon. We went up north to the high country where they had all that snow Monday,

as much as 10" there just 20 miles north of Sedona. The road home Friday found us driving through Flagstaff and then east with a little stop in Winslow, AZ. I stood on the corner, took a picture, then back on the road.

2,930 miles later, our garage door opened and our home was a welcome site. We had done it – behind the wheel for eight days and ready for another trip, this time we'll be traveling with others. Going by yourself is a little unnerving, but I was confident our little '69 could do it. One brake light switch, one quart of oil, and with Monica beside me. I don’t believe when she married me, she even thought she would be doing this someday, especially in MGs, but she's loving every minute of it every time. Next year, I hope we can go with another couple or two.

Are you ready to get "behind the wheel"?

From: Cecil Wise

Hi Rob,

I just now got around to reading this and have a couple of comments.

The article on the A series engine tour has an error. A series engine production ended in 2000, not 1990. My Mini is a 1995 and has an A series engine.

The article about LED lights also has issues. In picture #4, the light shown is directing light at the sides of the lens. Maybe with the reflector it is OK, but would probably be better with an LED lamp that directs the light to the rear of the vehicle. Spitfire, TR and Vitesse lamps are similar to the MGB and I'm using lamps from LiteZupp. Yes, they are expensive, but they produce a lot of light and I'm told are more efficient than a lot of other lamps available. Owners of LiteZupp are both LBC owners. http://www.litezupp.com

See you at Olpe?

Cecil

From the Editor

Cecil, Thanks so much for the input and correction about the A-Series engines. As to the LED lights again thanks for your feedback, much appreciate. Always nice to get a different perspective on things.

Phil, and Melody Collins have been invited to bring their MGC to this year’s Glenwood Springs Ralleye to celebrate te “C”s 65th birthday. Phil would like to invite other Club to come also.

We are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the MGC Roadster and GT during the Rallye Glen-wood Springs. The 6 cylinder, 2912cc, 145 bhp, MGC was introduced at the 1967 London Auto Show and was the first production MG to have metallic paint offered. A total of 9002 MGCs were produced (N.A. export 4256: Roadsters 2483 and GTs 1773). Total # of Automatic

Transmissions fitted 1320 (N.A. export 937: Roadsters 453 and GTs 484)

The MGC was based on the MGB and intended as a replacement for the Austin-Healey 3000. MG did it's best to fit the heavier C-series engine into the MGB body shell. The chief concern was placing the engine as far back in the car as possible to maintain weight balance and to allow space for the optional automatic transmission. The de-sign had the engine sitting forward in the engine bay giving the MGC a weight bal-ance of 53%/47%. (MGB 51/49)

To accommodate the engine, some chang-es had to be made to the unibody con-struction and mechanics of the MGB. Out-side, the most obvious changes are the bulge in the bonnet and the 15 inch wheels, most of which are wire. The bonnet bulges pro-vide clearance for the top of the engine, the larger radiator, and carburetors.

The MGB front cross member was replaced with a deep “U” design to clear the oil sump on the bottom of the engine. The MGC front suspension is changed from the MGB coil spring set-up to a lower arm connected to a torsion bar as the springing method. The torsion bar runs front to back, to a mounting point below the front seats, to transfer the suspension stresses back to the midline of the reinforced unibody. The rear suspension has a stronger rear axle commen-

surate with the increase in power and the front and rear spring rates were increased to handle the extra power and weight. In 1967 MG up-graded to an all synchromesh transmission and an optional automatic transmission for the B and C.

Please join us Friday evening at the Glenwood Springs Courtyard by Marriott to meet our MGC Owners and see their cars! We will have many opportunities to celebrate our cars and friend-ships during the weekend.

The photos are of Phil Collins prepping his ‘C’ for the upcoming trip. Phil reworked the entire front end replacing all original bushings with SuperPolyUrethene bushings.

Mitchell also made their first motorcar in 1902.

A decision was made in 1903 to focus on the

cars so the bicycle business was sold to the

Great Wester Mfg. Co in LA Porte, IN. That

company was known to us a Western Flyer.

The only Mitchell bicycle known to exist is in

the museum we visited!

The 21 years that Mitchell made automobiles

they were sent all over the world and the

Company was the largest employer in Racine

WI., with 75 acres under roof!

When all was said and done our host gave us

the whole Mitchell story, answered a barrage

of questions from our Club members. By the

way Jim Danielson actually rode in a Mitchell

Touring car when he was young!

Lewis Miller, His son and several helpers

proceed to lead us through museum in small

groups answering all our questions and telling

incredible personal stories about their marque

“The Mitchell”.

After our 2 hour tour we went to the casino for lunch, and were blessed with a bright sunny day for our journey home. _____________________________________

Tour to Arrow Rock planning update

Anita and I are hosting another tour to Arrow Rock this year. Here is what we have so far: We will be going to the Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre to see Mamma Mia at 2:00 on Sunday, July 30. We have a block of 20 seats reserved for the show. Tickets will be $27.00 each and must be paid a month in advance. We are checking on alternatives to eating at the J. Huston Tavern. There is not much to choose from around Arrow Rock though. Please let me know if you want to go back to J. Huston’s or if you prefer a change. Also any recommendations would be appreciated. I will be asking for people to sign up and pay for their tickets after I can provide all the details. The route will likely depend on where we are going to eat. I expect we will meet some time in the morning in the parking lot behind the Quik Trip at I-70 and 7 Highway in Blue Springs.

June 25June 25June 25June 25----28, 201728, 201728, 201728, 2017 MG2017 organized by NAMGBR and the San Diego MG Club, in San Diego, CA. This event is only 250 miles south of Solvang - making it possible to take in both events.

2017 MG Coast-to-Coast Adventure: This is not a NAMGBR organized event. Our members Dick Lunney and PJ Lenihan are organizing a drive from the east coast to San Diego. Put a tire in the Atlantic and a tire in Pacific at the beginning and end of a historic MG road trip of 8 days taking us across the southern United States to NAMGBR’s MG2017. Our tentative plans include using a southern route of secondary roads and some high speed interstates. Of course MG fans across the nation can join in anywhere. This plan has a couple short days for touring local sights. These short days also allow for catch up if anyone was delayed for un-scheduled repairs. Our model is the Rally to Reno in 2011 but with a more south-ern/southwestern flair. More information can be found on the dedicated MG Coast-to-Coast Adventure page under

2017 SLIM Run2017 SLIM Run2017 SLIM Run2017 SLIM Run

by Denny Hale

The 2017 SLIM Run (Spring Lark In May) will be May 6th and 7th, starting at the McDonalds at

US291 and US24 in Independence (16235 E US Hwy 24) Missouri. Driver’s meeting will be at

8am, with an 8:15am departure. It’ll be a pleasant drive on Saturday, stopping for lunch at

Maggie’s, in Boonville, then following the river south, and spending the night in Jefferson City

at the Quality Inn & Suites, 1716 Jefferson St, (573-634-4040). A block of rooms is set up, at

$85.01 for a king-size bed. Tell them you’re with the KC MG Car Club for that rate. Dinner

will be at Prison Brews. Check out their web site at prisonbrews.com to see a listing of their

microbrews on tap, including their Prison Town Brown, English style brown ale.

On Sunday we’ll work our way back, passing through Sedalia, with a drive through the State

Fairgrounds, then ending in Warrensburg with lunch at Heroes Restaurant & Pub. This is a

SLIM Run so the pace will be a little more laid back from other runs we do, and the

instructions are very easy to follow. From the front, we won’t be breaking the speed limit, and

we’ll be talking up the sights for your listening pleasure on our CB radio as we drive along.

Your GPS will help with direction mileages if you lose sight of the group. It’ll be about 400

miles for the weekend by the time you get back home. An Evite with all the details will come

out a couple of weeks before, so you can let us know if you’re coming. Hope to see you then.

For sale, a rare 1949 MGTC exu. This model was built for export and only 494 were manufactured. The odometer shows 14,179 miles on the original engine, transmission and differential. The car will come with what is believed to be an original user’s man-ual and parts book. Also included will be a tool roll with some original type tools, a spare set of original seats that will need reupholstering, original side curtains and replacement fabrics for new side curtains and some spare unused and used parts. The vinyl top, although not original, is in excellent condition. The black paint has a very good shine and the chrome is very good. This TC has a louvered racing style bonnet. The wooden portions of the tub are in excellent condition and the engine runs well. Though not a concours restoration, the car, which is not shown every year has won a second place in class award in the Heart-land Regional MG car show in 2007 and first place in class awards in 2008 and 2011. It was 1st in class in the Kansas City All British Regional Car Show in 2015. Both shows are long time regional shows in the Kansas City area. Overall I estimate the condition of the car as a good #2 car judged by the Hagerty definitions. For further information contact Stew Koesten at 913-269-5954 or [email protected] (7/16 INDEF)

Free Bonnet Struts A company called Pieces of Eight, http://www.mgstruts.com/index.html, run by Rick Ingram, NAMGBR MGB V8 Registrar, has donated a pair of bonnet struts for an alloy MGB bonnet, to KCMGCC. We’ll give them away via a drawing later this year. If you’d like to have your name in the drawing, just let one of the club officers know

you’re interested by Aug 1st. MGB Bonnet Struts: A pair of gas struts can now raise your bonnet effortlessly to an incredible 80 degrees! Struts give full access to the engine compartment, support the bonnet on both sides, and keep it level instead of letting it droop on one side. To close the bonnet, just pull it down gently and let the gas struts ease it down onto the catch. It’s that easy! Kits are available for steel, aluminum, or fiberglass bonnets; MGB or MGC.

MGB/MGC Boot Struts: The trunk strut kit lifts the boot lid to the normal height, but with two struts to support it on both sides and keep it level. The really big advantage of gas struts is that there’s no danger of damaging the boot lid by closing it before remembering to release a prop-catch. The price of our gas strut kit is less than having a bent boot lid repaired.

MGB/MGC GT Hatch Struts: What about hatchbacks? We have a great kit for that too! Press the release button and the hatch rises on its own. To close, just push down. Installation is simple, with only four holes to drill. It only takes 20 to 30 minutes.

MGB/MGC/MG Midget Bonnet (Hood) Strut Kit ....................... USD $50.00/kit

MGB/MGC/MG Midget Boot Lid (Trunk Lid) Kit ........……....... USD $50.00/kit

MGB/GT and MGC/GTRear Hatch Kit ..………………….......... USD $65.00/kit

MGB/GT and MGC/GT Interior Decklid Single Strut Kit .....;;.....USD $25/kit

MGB/GT and MGC/GT Interior Decklid Dual Strut Kit................USD $50/kit

Add USD $12 for shipping and handling per each kit. (plus USD $3 per kit if paying by PayPal.)

All strut sets come with mounting hardware and illustrated in-structions for easy installation.
