  • f business could be done with simply a firm handshake and a

strong commitment to doing the best job possible, the experts

at Heartland Kitchen & Bath would stand among the elite to

fulfilling that promise. This dynamic group of experienced and

talented remodeling experts bring a strong layer of integrity and

honor to the business, making them the metro areas go-to home

remodeling company. Consider your research done when looking

for the top-notch company in the industry, as Heartland Kitchen &

Bath promises to deliver the best in design, craftsmanship,

    communication, education and overall satisfaction.

We stand strong on our beliefs and firmly believe in giving the

most value for the money, emphasized Barringer Hansel, co-owner

with Nick Chrissan. For us, it is always about doing the right thing,

    no matter what.

In other words, Hansel and Chrissan treat every project as if it was

being completed in their own homes, from start to finish. Everyone

that works on each project is fully vetted and no stone remains

unturned when it comes to ensuring that whoever comes into

the clients home is there to do the job right without compromising

    quality or integrity.

Its important for contractors to be as transparent as possible

with clients and to make sure that whoever we hire is fully insured,

    explained Hansel.

In excellent standing with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and

highly ranked by the National Association of the Remodeling

Industry (NARI), clients can put their full trust in Heartland Kitchen &

Bath, knowing that their expectations will not only be met, but

    continually exceeded.

We are not simply salespeople. We are upfront, honest, and

friendly educators, said Hansel. We are going to be in your home

anywhere from a couple of weeks to a few months, depending on

the project, and we want you to have complete trust and faith in us.

To that end, Heartland Kitchen & Bath maintains an open line of

communication with each client at all turns.

  • transparent, and ensuring complete satisfaction not just in the end,

but throughout the entire process is what keeps this company

    ahead of the pack.

We stand behind our work and believe in always doing the right

thing, said Hansel. And we are always there for our customers if

something needs to be fixed or replaced, no matter the day or hour.

You are dealing with either Nick or myself, not sub-contractors

or vendors, expressed Hansel. We personally manage the project

for you. When you have questions, the answers come directly from

    us, the owners.

Heartland Kitchen & Bath practices fair pricing too, and will

honorably work within the clients budget. Their job is to provide the

best work for the best price and are able to keep the clients costs

down by minimalizing their own. With over 50 years of combined

experience in home remodeling, Hansel and Chrissan have acquired

invaluable skillsets in all facets of the industry and have combined

those talents to create an organization that supports a team of

    dedicated and skilled in-house employees.

We dont operate from a significant overhead, so we can keep

our costs down, explained Hansel. Additionally, we dont have

60-70 employees to pay, and those who do work for us have been

with us for several years. Not only do we know who is in your house,

    but you do too.

For Hansel and Chrissan, the real reward for them is not in

just getting another job done, but in realizing the satisfaction of

    their clients.

We enjoy making someones dream a reality, Hansel smiled.

This is not just sales. We help somebody achieve their dream,

whether that is what theyve envisioned or what we have envisioned

for them. We get to work with the client to create their dream home,

which becomes the place where they hang out together, bringing

a family closer. That is what it is all about.

Anyone can come out and sell you a kitchen or a bathroom

remodel, but Heartland Kitchen & Bath gives you a dream come

true. With a clear focus on educating, remaining authentic and

  • estled on a private street, the palacial 2015

Home of Distinction speaks volumes of the efforts

of a tremendously talented team of individuals from

architect Scott Bickford of Bickford + Company Architects,

homebuilder Starr Homes and celebrated interior designer Janet

Alholm to myriad craftsmen and suppliers instrumental in this

    homes creation.

An 18,876-square-foot one-of-a-kind jewel, this stone and

stucco French country estate has curb appeal that never ends,

as illustrated in our exclusive feature on the following pages.

With four floors, seven bedrooms, 10 baths and amenities

including an elevator, indoor sport court, home cinema, arcade,

fitness gym and a luxurious pool and spa, this home is destined

    to intrigue anyones imagination.

While it can be difficult to fully comprehend the dimensions of

this home, 10 furnaces, 10 air conditioning units, four tankless

water heaters and four mechanical rooms hint at its tremendous

scale and scope. But while the home is massive in size, it was

intended to provide a sense of warm casual comfort to its resident

    homeowners and their four children.

Beyond the family, thanks to a successful six-day tour which

took place in late November 2015, the home also provided

    KCH&S January/February 2016 | 23

EN JOY TH E TOUR !

substantial proceeds for KidsTLC, an organization which offers

children a continuum of care through innovative and successful

psychiatric treatment, community outreach, outpatient behavioral

    health, autism and wellness programs.

Nearly 5,000 people purchased tickets and toured the home,

resulting in $57,402 being raised for KidsTLC. Additionally, the

tour represented a prime opportunity for vendor participants to

showcase some of the latest materials and design trends in

    homebuilding. Leawood-based TLConcepts orchestrated the

    extensive details of the tour.

Of course, this entire project would not have been possible

without the homeowners generosity and willingness to share

their home with so many prior to moving into their new home.

We really built this house to give back, said the homeowners,

who added that they plan to host future charity functions at their

    suburban sanctuary.

Referring to the butterfly-shaped architecture of the home and

the way it envelopes the front and backyard, the homeowners

added, We like to think of this house as two hugs.

A truly fitting sentiment given the blessings this home has

already helped generate and the ways the homeowners hope to

use it to benefit the community in the future.

The homes stone and stucco exterior, paired with the dramatic roof line and

lush landscaping, set the stage for immediate appeal and magnetic charm.

A combination of flagstone and concrete pavers lead up to the homes

main entrance where the motor court showcases a porte cochre and five

garages. Roughly six months in planning and 14 months in the making, this

awe-inspiring mansion is testament to the powers of creative design and

    impeccable attention to detail.

While the Home of Distinctions exterior showcases

a decidedly French country flair, the interior imparts

a soft casual style paired with rustic elements

and elegant appointments. Ornate pendant lighting,

beveled square mirrors inset in the wall and hand-

scraped hickory hardwoods under a silver-leafed

dome hint of this homes expansive size and

    exquisite style.

There is no doubt that this well-appointed kitchen is sure to be the site of many gatherings

where family, friends and food will make up the heart of the action. Top-of-the-line

appliances complement the glazed custom cabinetry and mirrored cabinet that cleverly

conceals the refrigerator. The spacious alder wood island is topped with a quartz

countertop and fringed by a walnut dining shelf.

The kitchens faux-finished silver range hood provides a sleek focal point

while 12-by-12-inch tiles with an inset stainless steel circular motif add visual

interest above the cooktop. A variety of drawers and cabinets offer ample

storage space and the islands prep sink ensures functionality. The circular

elements of the unique light fixture over the island continue the backsplashs

    design theme.

An expansive wall of windows fills the hearth room and kitchen area with an abundance of daylight

and picturesque views. Most of the homes furnishings and appointments, such as those in the

hearth room, were locally sourced in the Kansas City area. Local businesses supplied furnishings

from rustic leather chairs and custom sofas to opulent light fixtures and pops of pillow color,

including all the drapes and bedding throughout the home.

  • Throughout the home is

a display of a variety of

    specialty faux finishes and

    glazes. With textured gray

    ceiling beams that meet at

    a circle coffer, the formal

    dining room showcases

    unique architectural elements,

    quiet hues and an elegant

    chandelier. The dining set

fuses the natural appeal of a

    solid wood table and modern

    metal chairs with the rooms

    silver-leaf detailing.

Adjoining the master suite, the master bath is truly breathtaking. While the bath is dressed in shimmering

shades of beige and silver, it is the center of the room that demands attention. A custom creation by

interior designer Janet Alholm, the dramatic column stands floor to ceiling and is adorned in pencil

accent tiles and beveled mirrors. Porcelain and marble tile flooring, a freestanding tub, an oversized

shower and a luxury walk-in closet round out this lavish .

Earthy elements prevail in the spacious master suite thanks to a stone fireplace,

hand-scraped hickory flooring and rustic beams. A vast ribbon of LED tape light

frames the ceilings perimeter in a seamless glow while also providing efficient lighting.

At the far end of the suite, the sunlit sitting area is home to two chaise lounges under

a square cupola. Panoramic outdoor vistas top off this blissful retreat.

  • 30 | KCH&S January/February 2016

The lounge bar is easily the high point of this room. The Patagonia granite atop the curved bar largely consists

of natural quartz and effortlessly reflects light from the fixture above, which is a piece of art literally. Created

specifically for this home, this stunning element resembles a long rustic branch with icicle-like lighting. Mirrors

behind the bar and LED lighting lend brilliance to this cosmopolitan setting.

  • KCH&S January/February 2016 | 31

    The lower-level 450-square-foot home cinema is a

treat for any fan of film. With a barrel-vaulted sky

full of fiber optic stars, stadium seating and a

granite-topped bar, this room is destined to be

a family favorite. Padded fabric walls promise a

sensational sound experience and a mini-fridge

and wine cooler ensure no thirsty guests. Pass the

    popcorn please!

The walk-out lower level is also home to a

handsome lounge area complete with three flat

screen TVs, billiards and a dazzling bar. While

entertainment was the main goal of this space,

style has not been sacrificed for fun. Porcelain tile

flooring trimmed in a river rock border, stone

columns and headers, and a mix of leather and

fabric furnishings combine in a fusion of rugged

    appeal, polished sophistication and uncomplicated

leisure. Winding further around the lower level,

entertainment options continue with an Xbox room,

arcade and home gym. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

When it comes to outdoor living, this private backyard oasis delivers. A pool with three

infinity-edge waterfalls, spa and pergola take the traditional poolside experience to a

whole new level. Even movies under the stars are possible with the drop-down 15-foot

outdoor screen on the pergola. Whether inside or outside on one of the balconies or

patios, this home guarantees an unparalleled approach to relishing family, friends and

    cherished moments.

This home is full of so much more than meets the eye. Consider, for

example, the secret spiral slide tucked into a lower-level bookcase which

slips into the basketball court in the sub-basement. Take the stairs or

take the slide to shoot some hoops or just expend some extra energy.

Spectators can enjoy a birds eye view of the action from overstuffed

leather chairs around a driftwood coffee table.

Theres no doubt that this stunning Leawood kitchen is a head-turner. When

the homeowner decided to color outside the lines somewhat when it came

to giving her kitchen a complete makeover, designer Alissa Welschmeyer

was ready to assist. As this particular home underwent a complete

renovation with the goal of eventually putting it on the market, the kitchen

    truly became a focal point.

I love it when people decide to bring color into a space, noted

Welschmeyer, who harmoniously partnered with the homeowner, combining

both of their ideas with an obvious accent on fun. I have worked with this

client before and she is so much fun as she really loves to dig in and pull it

    all together.

While all of the complementary colors certainly catch the eye, it is the

elongated straight-edged island painted in Restoration Hardware blue sage

that takes center stage. With ample seating for family and guests, this island

also boasts extra cabinet space for increased storage, as well as a built-in

microwave. Industrial pendant lighting with mercury finish parading down

the middle of the island adds a touch of elegant sophistication.

The mix of quartz countertops in Frosty Carina on the island and hutch

along with the dark grey granite on the perimeter work well with the

waterglass subway tile accented with white grout. The hutch also enjoys

Satin Seedy glass cabinets on top with painted shelving inside to match

the blue in the rest of the kitchen. All of this partners well with the Maison

    Blanche painted birch cabinets.

All new stainless steel appliances make a striking statement of their own,

working seamlessly with the bright colors, wood paneled ceiling and dark

stained hardwood flooring. Subtle details such as the cup pulls and stain

nickel finish on the drawer and door hardware quietly but powerfully pull the

    look together.

Not to be outdone by the eye-catching dynamics of the rest of the kitchen

is the wood paneled ceiling, accentuated with sky lights and recessed cans.

This ceiling is actually the original ceiling, noted Welschmeyer. We were

going to paint it white but decided it was best left as it was.

Sometimes it is just that one original touch that makes a space seem

vibrantly new and alive. {{ Resources

At first blush, this kitchen may present as somewhat simple in

style and design, but what rests in such a clean and minimalist

presentation is beyond extraordinary. Taking the clients intention for

a clean, simple and precise look and elevating that resulted in

a transformation that brought warmth and harmony that is

contiguous to the homes overall ambiance while still inspiring a

    fresh and transitional appeal.

As part of a complete home remodel in northern Leawood, this

established home has successfully blended a period-like appeal

with an updated vibe. After undergoing a kitchen remodel by the

experts at Portfolio Kitchen & Home, it still maintains its original

persona, but with a decided twist. Clean and specifically edited,

this kitchen refuses to subscribe to only a modern or contemporary

look and instead has embraced the freedom to simply be itself.

The simplicity of this design was intentional on the clients part,

expressed designer Geri Higgins, owner of Portfolio Kitchen & Home.

Designed by an experienced team that included Higgins, Lauren

Scassellati, Brian Burchfiel and Sarah Gunsche, this space boasts

a plethora of eye-catching highlights that perfectly complete

the look without overwhelming the senses. Clean, simple and

uncluttered, this space provides the right amount of functionality

and style while still making a powerful statement all of its own.

The perimeter maple cabinetry boasting Stowe white paint

complements the hickory wood and slate stain of the center

island. Caesarstone countertops (London Grey on the perimeter

and Emperadoro on the island) throughout provide a clean look

while simultaneously offering ample space for multitasking.

Sophisticated SpaceThe client wanted a very long and uninterrupted place for the

kids to do homework or for use as a food preparation area, noted

Higgins. Its also a great landing place for serving food at parties.

New appliances were installed, including the Verona range,

Jenn-Air refrigerator and Bosch dishwasher, adding not only

sophisticated presentation but also the requisite function.

Other highlights include the porcelain artisan tile backsplash, the

period-like milk glass pendant lights, and the darkened hardwood

floors, the color for which was custom mixed on-site.

This kitchen definitely proves its form and function prowess by

offering its own personality, meeting exacting standards effortlessly.

The power of the kitchen is the edited approach to get a clean,

fresh look that marries the period influence of the rest of the home,

    stated Higgins.

And the clients, Tammy and Robert Broaddus, could not be

    happier with the results.

Weve lived in our home for 15 years and have been working on

it since day one," noted Tammy. As a couple, Rob and I believe in

do-it-yourself, but not for a kitchen. Our biggest tip for a kitchen is

to use professionals so you dont waste time, energy and money

on a poor design or build out. Consult professionals with the latest

ideas that help you translate your needs into an efficient plan that

fits your tastes and budget, and the skills to install it to perfection,

as did Woodward Construction. Terry and Mark Woodwards

expertise brought the design to life brilliantly. To see their

craftsmanship each day was an amazing experience. Our kitchen

now is a daily expression of who we are as a family. We love it.

While most works of art in homes tend to hang from

the walls, this particular Brookside residence boasts

a true pice de rsistance within its walls in the form

    of this one-of-a-kind kitchen.

Having recently undergone a complete remodeling

experience, this space confidently speaks its mind

and enjoys the results with a plethora of unique

    touches and finishes.

This kitchen had been remodeled in the past, but

the client didnt feel it truly fit with the style of the

rest of the house, which is actually older than the

style the kitchen previously had, noted designer

Genevieve Hamel, AKBD, ASID of Kitchens by

Kleweno. The client wanted to open it up a bit and

brighten the area but was adamant about keeping it

to the style of the home. She had old hardware that,

while not a perfect match piece by piece, did fit with

the character of the home. We actually used a

combination of different metals as inspiration for the

    design of the kitchen.

Now that the kitchen is open to the adjoining

dining room, its breath-taking beauty holds strong.

Porcelain tile backsplash with a light grey grout sets

a delightful tone for the white cabinetry. Corner

shelves with antique silver brackets give a nod to the

mixed metals inspiration and the copper hood above

    Magic of Metal and Wood

the oven will eventually expose its own personality.

While the hood is shiny right now, it will naturally

darken and patina over time, taking on a color all

its own, explained Hamel, also referencing the

    corresponding copper pendants that foreshadow

how the color of the hood will ultimately transform.

The client did not want typical pendants, and

she did a lot of research to find exactly the ones

    she wanted.

The dark hardwood floors were refinished with the

project and the wood trim in the ceiling was matched

to the existing rim in the rest of the home. The

center island provides additional seating while

showing off its Calacatta Gold Italian white marble

top with hints of grey and gold within.

Two pantries stand at the ready to store

necessities, one located on the right side of the

refrigerator and the other next to the side entry door.

However, one might have to look twice to find the

refrigerator, as it presents as less of an appliance and

more as a piece of impeccably-designed furniture.

This is a fully integrated refrigerator with an

antique mirrored top and a freezer underneath that

consists of two freezer drawers with facades that

give the appearance of four drawers, noted Hamel.

A bit of TLC paired with some roll-up-your sleeves and wipe the

sweat off your brow ingenuity brought this 1990s kitchen into

the 21st century. With a focus on the center island, the kitchen

was completely redesigned, making it roomier, brighter and a true

    gathering spot.

Katie Ott, CKD, Designer and co-owner of Kitchen Studio:

Kansas City, oversaw this entire project that consisted of extracting

two awkwardly shaped and located islands and transposing many

areas of the space. The new single fully functional island stands as

the center point in the room. However, it required an appreciable

amount of manipulation of space and form to bring this kitchen

    to reality.

We basically gutted this kitchen down to the studs, noted Ott.

The cooking wall used to be where the refrigerator is now, and

we also added an L-shaped booth with a rectangular table.

In order to make the kitchen easier to access and much more

user-friendly, Ott employed some creative ingenuity.

Previously, the entry to the kitchen where the refrigerator

currently sits was a tight fit, so we notched that cabinet back, giving

it a curved design and opening the space a bit more, said Ott,

also referencing an entire drawer in that curved space dedicated to

technology. We installed a docking station in this area so that

laptops tablets and phones could be charged and easily stored.

Stylish FunctionalityAdditionally, hanging lights were installed over the counter and

recessed cans were placed in the ceiling. The kitchen walls were

painted in a soft greenish/grey color that successfully coordinates

with the pale green ceramic backsplash behind the cooking area.

The textured island countertop sports an attractive yet easy to

clean brushed sea pearl quartzite, and the Gravel colored painted

cabinetry around the island speaks welcoming volumes to the

room with its grey finish nicely complemented with blue undertones.

These pair perfectly with the black granite perimeter countertops

throughout the rest of the kitchen.

And proving the full functionality of this kitchen, Ott pointed to

the unique aspects of the center island. Ample storage all around

    makes this a homeowners dream.

The back of the island contains a drawer stack and two

refrigerator drawers, along with an ice machine, she said. There

is even more storage on the other side.

The 24-inch deep pantry maximizes every square inch of its

space with several roll-out shelves, and nestled above that are

vertical storage dividers. Contiguous to the refrigerator is the

microwave with accompanying coffee machine space and

additional storage underneath. For even more storage, the 15-inch

deep wall cabinets reach all the way to the ceiling.

This kitchen gets a lot of usage now, smiled Ott.

When a young couple relocated from San Francisco to

Kansas City, they had to adjust from a small condo to a

large Leawood home while simultaneously incorporating

their metropolitan tastes into the traditional style design

their new home offered. Arlene Ladegaard, Owner and

Principal Designer of Design Connection, Inc., understood

precisely how to meet her clients needs and certainly

lived up to the challenge, as evidenced by this spectacular

kitchen that exceeded the homeowners expectations.

The clients wanted a modern kitchen, but the home

was more traditional in style, so we made it fit not only the

house, but also their lifestyle, expressed Ladegaard.

Central to the couples desire was a modern kitchen.

One item they truly desired was a 48-inch Sub-Zero built

in refrigerator. While the layout of the kitchen could

certainly accommodate that request in terms of size, a

    few rearrangements were in order.

We based the design of the kitchen on the refrigerator

they wanted, explained Ladegaard, noting that brand

new cabinets were made which had to be rearranged

to blend and work well with the existing oven and

Advantium, along with the new appliances, which included

a gas Wolfe cooktop and a Bosch dishwasher.

Another must have in this kitchen was the expansive

island that can seat four people, and storage for all the

pots and pans was not a problem with the installation of

extra deep drawers under the cooktop.

We changed the placement of the island to a more

    workable rectangular one, said Ladegaard.

Among the many other highlights of this kitchen include

the Caesarstone quartz countertops, which are heat and

scratch resistant, and the pure white cabinets sporting

a durable resin finish which were painted off-site prior

    to installation.

Painted white cabinets are known for chipping over

time. The pure white pigment stain we used on them

instead will readily withstand the test of time and hold up

to years of use, noted Ladegaard.

Two glass cabinets flanking the sink create a striking

focal point and balance in the kitchen.

The original ceiling beam that once divided the kitchen

was removed to allow for better flow and to add a more

contemporary flair to the area. Additional touches of

luxury include the pull out spice racks, soft close drawers

and doors, and recessed canned lights with silver alzak

trim. Under cabinet LED lights beautifully accentuate the

glass mosaic backsplash. Completing the picture is the

stunning refinished hardwood flooring boasting an opaque

    dark java finish.

    Modern Lines

  • The beauty of the glaze is that is still allows you to see the

detail of the wood grain in them, noted Otterness.

The brushed satin nickel architectural pendants hanging above

the counter create a strong visual appeal without being too

overwhelming in the space, and the over-scaled subway tile behind

the stove harmonizes beautifully with the Harbor Mist cabinetry. Of

course, the paneled refrigerator almost seems like a work of art as

it blends seamlessly with the flow of the space.

We made customized panels to make them look built-in, said

    Otterness.

The traditional hardwood flooring complements the overall

ambiance of the space and allows the eye to follow through the

design really well, taking you to the wet bar in the rear that boasts

a subtle black color for the wine cubby above the sink.

The subtle green/grey paint on the walls was inspired by the

countertop and add a layer of warmth and inviting ambiance to

    the space.

This was definitely a fun project for us and for the client,

and even though remodeling does come with a bit of stress, our

job is to make sure it truly is a great experience for our clients,

    noted Otterness.

When the homeowners of this stunning residence in Old Leawood

were in the building process of their new home, they knew the

kitchen had to be special, and when it came to finding just the style

they wanted, they found their answer by partnering with the

experts at Classic Kitchens Design Studio in Leawood, Kansas.

They had seen the classic country French style kitchen in our

showroom and really liked it, but wanted to create more of a

classic modern space similar to that style, explained Lisa

    Otterness, CKD, Lead Designer.

This new build project relied on a rather minimalist approach that

provided extraordinary results. By simplifying lines and aiming for

less ornamentation, the results were not only eye-catching but also

    quite functional.

Among the standouts in this design is the custom stain, which

was used on the island and on the wooden hood over the stove,

which also bears accompanying spice cabinets on either side for

ease of use and maximization of space.

The quartz countertop by Cambria shows off its Berwyn color

and ultimately became the color palate from which the rest of the

    home was tailored.

Also leading the design pack are the maple cabinets that were

covered in Harbor Mist with a translucent black glaze.

  • Brand new appliances purchased by the homeowner complement

the dark paint on the cabinets, and the expansive whole sink is

perfect for cleaning large pots and pans. Light colored walls,

original hardwood flooring, natural wood around the windows and

dark trim to sharpen the look have teamed up to allow for the

exposure of multiple textures and materials, preserving the history

of the house while simultaneously giving it is own unique style.

This house has a voice now, emphasized Haseltine.

Open floating shelves on the walls keep the space looking

uncluttered while also opening up the area.

We were able to create these shelves with no visible brackets

to allow for a seamless look, stated Haseltine.

And while older cabinets may present with the remnants of time,

Haseltine incorporated a darker paint, hiding the imperfections yet

still maintaining their character. The original light fixtures create a

timeless appeal without overcrowding the area.

I enjoyed giving this smaller kitchen an elegant and welcoming

appeal while still preserving its integrity with the rest of the house,

said Haseltine. This house has been well-maintained over the

    years and is well loved.

Despite its small footprint, this Craftsman-style home just south of

the Plaza is not timid about showcasing its strengths, especially

when it comes to the kitchen. Roughly 75 years old, the walls in

this space undoubtedly have countless stories to tell, but the page-

turning adventure of today rests in its recently refurbished appeal.

Overseen by Principal Designer Julia Haseltine of Julia Haseltine

Design, this kitchen was the beneficiary of her ability to take the

clients vision and allow it to transpire, keeping budget, lifestyle and

current needs at top of mind. With her prowess for employing

excellent design sense for any space, Haseltine breathed new life

into this kitchen in many unique ways.

The original exposed brick walls provide not only a focal point,

but also a sense of warmth and treasured ambiance. When paired

with the flowing design of the copper-colored Formica countertop

with a terra cotta base and rounded extension, the kitchen enjoys

an effortless flow of form and function.

The shape of the counter creates a traffic circle of sorts and

allows it to flow easily into the space, noted Haseltine, who also

referred to the custom-made leg for the counter extension table.

    Natural Warmth

  • Kitchen designer Shelby Puetz of Regarding Kitchens has an

obvious knack for making peoples dreams come true when it

comes to the style, tone and flavor of the kitchen remodel they

desire. When she tackled a complete renovation for this Olathe

kitchen that had been stuck in the 1990s for quite some time, she

had her work cut out for her. While the husband of the home was

drawn to a contemporary ambiance with minimalist undertones,

the wife favored a more traditional appeal. Puetz seamlessly

blended those persuasions employing a stunning transitional style

that catered to the couples tastes.

This is a family of eight and they enjoy hosting a lot of social

events in their home, noted Puetz. In order to bring the dated look

of the kitchen into a newer design, we took out the original honey

oak cabinetry and laminate counter tops and added perimeter

white maple frameless cabinetry and a maple stained island, which

houses a dishwasher and a Blanco Performa sink.

The luxurious countertops catch the eye with their elegant blend

of grays, taupes and a suggestion of chartreuse in this Pacific style

Silestone quartz, and in order to give this space a broader landscape

from which to enjoy the view, a bit of muscle was required.

We took out the wall that originally extended between two

rooms where the refrigerator currently is and the space now flows

into the family room, noted Puetz.

Other highlights include the maple hood above the stove that is

perfectly accented by the natural ivory tumble travertine 2 x 4

brick pattern tiles in the backsplash. All new appliances made of

stainless steel with a Thermador gas cooktop make cooking fun,

along with the GE oven combination and the Sharp microwave to

the right of the range that sets lower, keeping it out of ones eye line

and not absorbing extra counter space.

A unique gem in this kitchen is the bar/hutch area that stands

just before the entry to the dining room. The serving counter top is

made of walnut and the glass cabinet above provides elegant

framework for the encased stemware. Wine storage is contiguous

to the hutch, which has inside drawers with dividers for organized

    storage of liquor.

This is the clients dedicated socializing spot, noted Puetz.

Among the final touches include the recessed cans and

gorgeous pendant lights that complement the entire space.

I enjoyed working with this couple, smiled Puetz. They

embraced my creative ideas, designed to meet their individual

    desires.

proximity and the sink and dishwasher together at the end of the

work station. Remember to keep the refrigerator close to the

    preparation work area.

    KCHS:

WEISS: I would consider adding cabinet functionality. Adding

options like pullouts can make the back of the cabinets more

accessible and usable. A Lazy Susan turnstyle in the corner space

can give you greater access to a usually dead space and provide

a space to place difficult to store items like small appliances. Also,

if you have high ceilings consider replacing your cabinets with ones

that reach the ceiling for even more storage space.

    KCHS:

WEISS: First, increase your task lighting. Proper lighting brightens

the kitchen and makes working much easier. Choose undercounter

options for trash and recyclables to free up floor space. I would

also consider painting the wall or cabinets white and choosing

a light colored backsplash. For backsplashes, glass tiles are

extremely popular right now for the kitchen because they reflect

light and make the space feel open. Lastly, I would keep the

counters free of clutter. Put away appliances you do not need

very often so that you have more space to work, and make the

kitchen feel as spacious as possible.

    KCHS:

WEISS: Personally, I think reconfiguring cabinets and drawers with

pullouts is probably one of the fastest and most valuable ways to

get more functionality of a kitchen. Sometimes a simple fix yields

    huge results.

    Splashy Kitchen

Once a simple way to protect walls from spills and splatters, todays backsplashes come in a myriad of eye-catchingmaterials and colors making the backsplash a focal pointin the kitchen. With all of these choices how do you knowwhich backsplash is right for your kitchen? Kitchen GuruAileen Isaacs of Emser Tile gives these tips on making sureyour backsplash suits your kitchen and your tastes.

    Backsplashes

  • In most homes there are two places thatmake the most impact for the least amount of square

footage and money; the fireplace and the backsplash. Play

it safe and tone down the extravagance if you are worried

about resale. And if you need help creating a look that is

perfect for you, Interior Designers are another great resource.

I always tell everyone; you have to loveit. There are too many choices available out there to not

totally love your choices. You will know it when you find it.

Have fun creating a kitchen that is the center of your home.

Backsplashes have changed over the last few years. With

so many new choices for countertops, more people are

choosing texture over color variations. Colors are more

neutral. Showrooms can feel overwhelming with so many

choices. When you focus on your ideas and colors, only a

handful of choices will work. This will help you from getting

    overwhelmed by all the choices.

Discover what is the inspiration andfocus in the room. Do you have a fabulous busy vein

running through your granite? If so, you will probably want

something texturally interesting, highlighting one of the

primary colors in your granite. If you desire something wild

and crazy for your backsplash, something a little more

subdued for the countertop is a good complement. The

same is true if you want a busy countertop to be your

focus, select the countertop first. If your backsplash is your

focus for the room, build your look around the backsplash.

Websites like houzz.com and Pinterest help tomake the kitchen of your dreams. The Internet has changed

the way we get inspired, share our ideas, and source our

materials. The ideas gathered from these sights can help

to convey your desires to others to help create the look of

    your dreams.

  • times that wont work for your schedule. Your Realtor is there

to help make the process go smoothly.

Motivated Buyers. People hunting forhomes during the winter often have a

reason for doing so, meaning that they are

more motivated buyers. Many buyers who

arent incredibly motivated will put off a

home search during the winter months and

pick things up again in the spring. Because

the local market has been enduring an

inventory shortage for much of 2015,

many highly motivated buyers are still

on the hunt for their ideal home, so its a

great time to take advantage of the

    demand for homes

And of course, the most important

thing that you can do to give yourself an

advantage is to hire a Realtor, a member

of the National Association of Realtors.

    Realtors have unparalleled knowledge

of our local market and can help you sell

    your home this winter.

Winter has arrived and so has the time of year when home

sellers wonder whether they should keep their properties

on the market or take them off. Or if

owners havent listed their home yet, they

may be asking themselves if they should

wait until spring or brave the winter real

    estate market?

Here are a few reasons why homeowners

should consider listing their homes this

    winter:

Less Inventory. Many homeownerschoose to wait until the warmer months to

list their property for sale, which can mean

fewer homes entering the market than

at other times of the year. An inventory

shortage can be great news for sellers.

Fewer homes on the market means more

    attention from potential buyers. Inventory

for the Kansas City region is down more

than 25 percent versus this time last

year, a trend that we have seen throughout

    the year.

Control Your Showings. Many sellershave hectic schedules, and the prospect of

balancing showings can seem daunting. Homeowners do not

have to allow their homes be constantly available for showing.

Let your real estate agent know if there are certain days and

  • ach year, 50% of Americans over the age of 18 develop a musculoskeletal injury

that lasts longer than three months*. Thats around 108 million people each year,

and the numbers are on the rise. A more active lifestyle, an aging population, improved

survival rates after disease or injury, and an increase in the incidence of obesity all

contribute to the increased incidence of injury. Unfortunately, many of these incidents

result in a decreased mobility that seriously impacts the life of the sufferer.

One doctor, C. Lan Fotopoulos, a physiatrist with the highly respected Dickson-

Diveley Midwest Orthopaedic Clinic, believes that injuries that compromise mobility

deserve a common-sense approach that addresses the many intricacies of injury with

    multi-faceted solutions.

Nothing sidelines a person more than a nagging physical injury, yet many still are

slow to take their injuries seriously, and assume that a simple pain is the same as

a simple injury. Still many others believe that physiatry, the branch of medicine that

diagnoses, treats, and manages disorders and injuries of the muscles, bones, and

nerves is reserved for hard core athletes or those who have some form of a seriously

    debilitating injury.

Military Trained Precisionand Big Picture ThinkingA graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas

City School of Medicine, Dr. Fotopoulos is no

stranger to big picture thinking. Board certified in

    physical medicine and rehabilitation; pain medicine;

    sports medicine; and undersea hyperbaric

medicine, his career has been marked by diversity

and excitement. In addition to serving as an

emergency room physician for several years, he

also enjoyed a thrilling career in the military,

serving as a lieutenant commander and diving

and undersea medical officer in the U.S Navy.

It was while serving in theaters from the Persian

Gulf to North Africa that Dr. Fotopoulos studied

hyperbaric and diving medicine and worked

alongside Navy SEALS and other special

    operations teams.

His career in the military provided many valuable lessons and further

solidified his belief in the value of ongoing precision training and

teamwork. All of this requires unfailing teamwork.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the military, and find that many

elements of that experience carry over to the rest of my career, he

explained. Medicine is a fraternity; you work together toward a

common goal with others depending on your skill and knowledge, and

Physiatry sometimes called physical medicine and rehabilitation,

however, is for everyone from the professional athlete to the person

    experiencing long-term back pain.

Injury and the resulting pain are indiscriminate. Anyone at any age

can experience disease or injury that causes severely disabling pain.

Today, with improved collaboration, the medical specialty of physiatry

is playing an important and ever-growing role in helping patients obtain

optimum health and mobility, Dr. Fotopoulos shared of the more

    integrated medical landscape.

Dr. Fotopoulos, who was the first, and for an extended period only

physiatrist in the Kansas City area, has been fortunate to see the

    changes firsthand.

Pain is not a simple thing. Doctors and nurses are trained in the

diagnosis and treatment of disease, but not in the finding the cause

or treating pain. And because pain is complex, it requires a team

    approach.

Today, a visit to the physiatrist is the first referral for most injuries

whether to find the root cause of pain, prevent further damage, or

effectively manage ongoing pain. This translates into a huge advantage

    for patient care.

Physiatrists have the advantage of looking at the whole picture. We

look at the medical issue, but also how the medical issues at hand fully

impact the patients mobility and self-care. The increasingly collaborative

atmosphere of medicine makes this even more beneficial, he furthered.

    PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

  • you depending on theirs. Providing ongoing communication, respect,

and commitment to my colleagues is very important to me.

Dickson-Diveley, which sees a high volume of sports patients

ranging from school-age to professional athletes, is well-known for its

    highly collaborative atmosphere.

It is an exceptional organization and a true team that constantly

lays the foundation for optimum results. I have the opportunity to

follow the patient working in non-operative care, but also consulting

in surgeries, and then see the patient afterward to help direct their

therapy. This dynamic pushes everyone forward and challenges us

professionally to provide care that exceeds expectations.

Relationships MatterDr. Fotopoulos has a deep respect for the medical community and

values the relationships formed within the medical community. This

respect was formed very early; having grown up with a surgeon father

and mother who was a nurse and head of the OB/GYN and cardiac

nursing at the old Kansas City General Hospital, you can say medicine

    is in his DNA.

His father C. K. Fotopoulos, the only surviving child of Greek

immigrants who had four older siblings die from a Mediterranean

anemia by age 2, worked tirelessly to achieve a highly successful and

respected career in medicine. It is the influence of his father that drives

    the younger Fotopoulos.

Growing up in a physicians home, I grew to understand the

challenges faced by medical professionals, and saw that mutual

respect is a critical component in patient care. My fathers example is

the source of my dedication to the patient, as well as the respect I feel

    toward other physicians.

Physiatry, the Perfect FitUltimately having developed a love for biomechanics, Dr. Fotopoulos

decided to dedicate his career to physiatry. It was his father who

suggested he pursue Dickson-Diveley, the oldest and most respected

    orthopaedic clinic in Kansas City.

I have never once regretted either of those decisions, Dr.

Fotopoulos affirmed. I enjoy doing what I love in an atmosphere where

teamwork and collaboration work for the most appropriate solutions.

While medicine is complex, finding solutions does not have to be,

    he asserts.

The best answers lie in approaching the problem with the

understanding that every member of the team has something valuable

to offer. Together it is possible to get to the root cause and find a

comprehensive answer. However, there are times when the answers

lie outside of the most aggressive treatments.

Options and AnswersThe mission of physical medicine and rehabilitation is to enhance

function and provide the fullest quality of life possible to the patient,

while using the most conservative modalities available.

  • offer rapid relief, increased mobility, and low complication rates in cases

    of osteoporotic fractures."

Radio frequency ablation is yet another treatment for chronic back

pain and currently is also being used for the treatment of continued

knee pain after total knee athroplasty.

The Complexities of PainIt is estimated that in the United States more than 76 million people

suffer from pain. Pain can be chronic or acute, such as post-surgical

pain, and how each person experiences pain is quite different. Dealing

with pain is not an exact science, a fact that helps keep things in

    perspective for Dr. Fotopoulos.

While physicians are more likely to refer to a physiatrist immediately

upon injury or when a patient is experiencing pain of undetermined

origin, the general public remains mostly unaware of the of the simple

things they can do to avoid having the need to see someone like me,

    he mused.

No matter the age, when a person is faced with limited mobility, their

life becomes vastly different. This not only hinders the enjoyment of

life, it can also hinder productivity and the ability to live life fully.

Certainly, dealing with pain is complex but one of the best things

about this profession is the ability to help patients achieve relief and

restore the ability to live their lives more fully, whether that means

enjoying sports, and active family life, or a productive work life. At the

end of the day, nothing really compares to knowing that you helped to

give your patients part of their lives back. That is about as rewarding

    as a job can get.

    S P O N S O R E D C O N T E N T

Educating the patient is an important part of the process.

We work to provide patients with the information they need to

make informed decisions and encourage them to be full participants in

their own care, whether that involves lifestyle changes, non-surgical

treatments, surgery, or a combination of these things, explains

    Dr. Fotopoulos.

With continual advances in the field, the options today are vast.

Where some conditions and injuries were once completely

debilitating, today they can be treated and managed. The development

and availability of advanced procedure helps us address pain more

    successfully than ever before.

Examples of those procedures performed by Dr. Fotopoulos are

    Spinal Cord Stimulation, SCS

    and minimally invasive lumbar

    decompression, or MILD.

    Spinal Cord Stimulation is

    used to treat chronic

    intractable pain of the trunk

    and limbs caused by failed

    back surgery and peripheral

    neuropathy. MILD treatment

is used for patients who have

    developed nerve compression

    secondary to central spinal

    stenosis in addition to lumbar

    claudication syndromes.

    The classic symptoms are

    a back pain and someone

    whose legs hurt when he

    or she walks, explains Dr.

    Fotopoulos, one of the first

    and few physicians in the

    Kansas City area qualified to

    perform MILD.

Another option in relief he shares, is transforaminal injection.

A transforaminal injection is an injection of long acting steroid into

the opening at the side of the spine where a nerve root exists. The

steroid reduces inflammation and swelling of the spinal nerve roots and

surrounding tissues, reducing the pain caused by swelling.

Diverse options also exist for common problems such as

    osteoporotic fractures, says Dr. Fotopoulos.

Sacroplasty, vertebroplasty and balloon assisted kyphoplasty all

  • ancer and blood disorders cut against all boundaries of age, sex, race, and economic

status. Men, women, and children of all background experience the complications

associated with these conditions, some of which are painful or life-threatening.

At Kansas Institute of Medicine Cancer and Blood Center in Lenexa, the battle

against cancer and other blood related disorders does not have to be a lonely one. As

the only community based oncology and hematology practice in the area, the KIM

Cancer and Blood Center team is dedicated to making sure patients never have to

choose between high-quality care and staying within the close proximity of their

    family and community support system.

Getting through challenging times such as cancer treatment or other types of blood

disorders requires much more than having an accurate diagnosis. It requires all of

the elements of treatments, technologies and outside support coming together to form

the most advantageous conditions possible to deal with a serious health condition.

The Cancer and Blood Center began a year ago with that mission in mind explains

its founder, Dr. Kelley Young, who having experience in a large hospital setting saw the

value in bringing oncology and hematology to the community level.

  • We are unique because we are the only privately owned community

based hematology/oncology practice in the area. Community based

care is very valuable because health care delivery is greatly enhanced

by the personal doctor/patient relationship we offer, which includes

involving the family or primary support team.

Dr. Young, who is a Board Certified Oncologist/Hematologist,

specializes in Hematology and Oncology and treats a wide variety of

cancer diagnoses and blood disorders, recognizes the many obstacles

patients face when managing health care.

Community based care allows patients to receive leading-edge

therapies while maintaining the critical ties of support with their local

and personal communities. It also eliminates the problems of logistics,

and having to travel long distances while not feeling at ones best.

Those things can become serious barriers for patients.

Theres No Place Like HomeOne of the most distressing aspects about dealing with cancer and

other disorders is disconnecting from the normalcy of life in order to

obtain treatment. For some that means an extended amount of time

away from home. For others it could mean having their schedules so

significantly disrupted that it is difficult to maintain their normal routines.

    10 | KCH&S HEALTHY KANSAS CITY 2016

When a patient is dealing with a

significant health issue, the process of

receiving treatment can cause them to

    become disconnected from the many

things that matter in life. This makes all

of the things surrounding treatment take

center stage, which can become even

more stressful. The ability to maintain a

normal routine is very beneficial to

    patients. Work and other activities

provide a welcomed distraction as well

as help maintain ties to friends, family,

and support groups, Dr. Young shared

of the practicality of attaining care.

    Community based care makes

maintaining a normal schedule and regular routine much more feasible.

A Year of ProgressThe response to the practice has been overwhelmingly positive, and

has brought many exciting changes to the Cancer and Blood Center.

One of the most notable milestones was the arrival of Dr. Rolando

Breier in December of 2015. Dr. Breier, whose Board Certifications

include Medical Oncology, Internal Medicine, Hospice and Palliative

Medicine also comes from a background at a larger facility.

I came to the Kansas Institute of Medicine Cancer and Blood

Center because I wanted to dedicate myself to more personalized

care. We really focus on quality of care versus quantity of care. When

patients come here, they get the time and support that they need and

deserve, shared Dr. Breier as he spoke of the importance of quality

    time with patients.

For the Cancer and Blood Center, progress always equals enhanced

    patient care.

Our goal is to continue to find better ways to serve our patients,

and never being satisfied with something that is good enough. We

want to ensure that every patient has all the time they need to ask

questions and understand their diagnosis. This is a very important part

of providing real support, as well as the development of the most

beneficial treatment plans. Progress is about giving patients the
