THE 2014 KANSAS CITY ROYALS POST-SEASON GUIDE IS AVAILABLE ON-LINE AT MLBPRESSBOX.COM TOO MUCH MAD-BUM--Kansas City’s return to the World Series was derailed last night by a 25-year old North Carolinian, as Madison Bumgarner gave up just one run over his 7.0-inning stint for a 7-1 decision over the Royals in the opener of the 2014 Fall Classic...the loss was the first for Kansas City in this postseason after reeling off eight in a row to win the American League crown...starter James Shields was roughed up for five runs over his 3.0+ innings, including a 3-run first frame that was capped by a 2-run homer from Hunter Pence, who had been 0-for-11 career vs. Shields entering the contest...the Royals really had just one viable chance against Bumgarner all night, as Omar Infante opened the third by reaching on an error, followed immediately by a Mike Moustakas, but KC couldn’t convert and finished the night 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position...to display how well the Royals have played of late, that loss was the first for the ballclub since September 27 in Chicago in the next-to-last game of the regular season. LINEUP LOOKS VAGUELY FAMILIAR--If the lineup for Game #2 looks like the lineup for Game #1, it will be the same starting nine that manager Ned Yost has penned since September 21 in a series finale against the Detroit Tigers...the ninesome of (in order) Alcides Escobar, Nori Aoki, Lorenzo Cain, Eric Hosmer, Billy Butler, Alex Gordon, Salvador Perez, Omar Infante and Mike Moustakas has gone 14-3 since this became the everyday lineup...tonight is the final time these nine will play together in this order until at least next Tuesday if a Game #6 is necessary because the rules will go to National League style starting Friday night in San Francisco. WILD CARD SERIES--This 2014 World Series marks the second time that a pair of Wild Card qualifiers are squaring off for the World Championship, the other occurring in 2002 when these San Francisco Giants battled the Angels, losing the series in seven games to the Halos...the Royals rolled through Oakland (Wild Card Game), the Los Angeles Angels (3-0 in ALDS) and Baltimore (4-0 in ALCS) to get to this final stop of 2014. POSTSEASON RECAP--Last night opened Kansas City’s third trip to the World Series in franchise history and like the other two, the Royals incurred defeat in Game #1...the 1980 Royals dropped a 7-6 decision in Philadelphia to open that Fall Classic, that wound up going to the Phillies in six games...KC also lost the first game of the 1985 World Series here to the St. Louis Cardinals, in fact dropped the first two home games, but then rebounded to take its lone World Championship in seven games...this year’s run to the World Series began with KC coming back from a 7-3 deficit in the eighth inning of the Wild Card Game against Oakland’s Jon Lester, plating three eighth inning runs, the game-tying tally in the ninth and then scoring twice in the 12th to post a 9-8 victory over the A’s...from there, the Royals swept three straight from the Angels, highlighted by back-to-back 11-inning wins in Anaheim and then Kansas City kept the dream alive with a 4-game sweeping of Baltimore, taking the first two in Camden Yards and then finishing things off here last Tuesday and Wednesday with consecutive 2-1 triumphs. THE STREAKS ARE SNAPPED--Kansas City’s 8-game postseason run of 2014 was halted with last night’s loss, as was the 11-game postseason streak that dated back to 1985...the Royals were the first team in history to win its first eight games of a postseason since playoffs came to be in 1969 with divisional play, while the 11-gamer came up one win shy of tying New York Yankees for the longest postseason winning streak in history...the Bronx Bombers had a pair of 12-game postseason streaks (1927-32 and 1998-99)...manager Ned Yost is the first manager in Major League history to record wins in his first eight postseason games at the helm, one better than Clint Hurdle’s run with Colorado in 2007. BEST TRIO EVER???--The Royals are showing the nation what Kansas Citians came to appreciate this summer with one of the top bullpens in the game...the trifecta of Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland were the first trio in history to make at least 60 appearances each and record individual ERA’s of under 1.50...in this postseason the trio has combined to work 25.2 innings, allowing three earned runs for a 1.05 ERA while fanning 30. TONIGHT’S STARTING PITCHERS: RHP Jake Peavy (1-0, 1.86) vs. RHP Yordano Ventura (0-0, 4.85) YORDANO VENTURA takes the hill in Game #2 of the World Series, his fourth postseason appearance and third start...the first Royals rookie to start at any position in the World Series, Ventura signed a free agent contract as a 17-year-old on October 8, 2008 out of Samana in the Dominican Republic and debuted on September 17, 2013. NO STRANGER TO GAME 2’S --Yordano is starting Game #2 for a third straight series, having taken a no decision in the ALDS and ALCS...he worked 5.2 innings in the ALCS on October 11 at Baltimore, allowing 4 runs, 5 hits and 3 walks with 3 strikeouts before leaving a 4-4 game due to right shoulder tightness...KC broke the tie in the ninth, winning 6-4 to take a 2-0 series lead in an eventual 4-0 sweep...he went 7.0 frames in the division series at Anaheim, allowing a lone run with 5 hits, a walk and 5 strikeouts, with KC winning 4-1 in 11 innings...Ventura became the fourth pitcher in team history to go at least 7.0 innings in a postseason game with no more than 1 run allowed, joining Bret Saberhagen, Charlie Leibrandt and Danny Jackson, who all did it twice. FIRST TIME VS. GIANTS--Ventura is opposing the Giants for the first time outside of Spring Training and the minor leagues...he was 2-0 this year in 3 Interleague starts, recording a career-high 10 strikeouts in a May 5 no decision at San Diego, followed by wins on June 5 vs. St. Louis and August 6 at Arizona. ROOKIES IN THE SERIES--“Ace” is the 66th rookie hurler to start at least one World Series game and the first from the A.L. since 2007, when Daisuke Matsuzaka opened and won Game #3 for Boston vs. Colorado...32 rookies have started and won at least once, with Michael Wacha the most recent in Game #2 last season for St. Louis. REPRESENTING THE DOMINICAN--Yordano is the ninth different pitcher from the Dominican Republic to start in the World Series and the first since Pedro Martinez in Game #6 of the 2009 Fall Classic for Philadelphia...including relievers, 8 different pitchers from the Dominican have earned a World Series win, with San Francisco’s Santiago Casilla the most recent in 2012 at Detroit...Joaquin Andujar, Jose Rijo, Ramon Ortiz and Pedro Martinez are the only Dominican-born pitchers to start and win in the Series, with Martinez the most recent (2004, Game 3 for Boston at St. Louis). AMONG MLB’S TOP ROOKIES--The 23-year old led big league rookies in quality starts (22), innings (183.0) and opponents’ batting average (.240), with his 14 wins second to Matt Shoemaker of the Angels (16)...Ace was also second among rookie in strikeouts (159) and ERA (3.20), with his ERA 10th among all A.L. hurlers. ON KC’S ROOKIE LEADERBOARD, TOO--Yordano’s 22 quality starts set a Royals rookie record while his 14 wins placed him in a tie for for fourth and were the most since Tom Gordon set the bar at 17 in 1989...his 159 strikeouts rank third among KC freshmen, the most since 1973. STRONG DOWN THE STRETCH--Ventura recorded 11 straight quality starts prior to his final regular season outing, going 7-2 over the longest “quality” span by any Royals pitcher since 2003-04...the 7 wins from July 31 on tied him for second in the American League, trailing only the Halos’ Matt Shoemaker (8). AT HOME--The righty was 6-7 at Kauffman Stadium this year, recording a 3.21 ERA over 17 outings (16 starts)...he pitched well here down the stretch, going 3-1 over 5 starts from July 31 on as he posted a 2.43 ERA, .193 opponents average and 32 strikeouts over 33.1 innings. Royals Notes - San Francisco Giants @ Kansas City Royals - Wednesday, October 22, 2014

This & ThatHOLLY CONTINUES ROLL INTO OCTOBER--Greg Holland finished the regular season with 46 saves and has gone 6-for-6 in this postseason, including a big league record tying 4-for-4 in the ALCS, joining Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley as the only pitchers to accomplish that feat since the ALCS went to a best-of-seven format...while postseason stats are not included in the regular season total, with six saves to this point Holly has now made good on 52 of his 54 save tries this year, including 45 of the last 46 and 26 in a row after last night’s rescue...over a longer haul in regular season play, Holland has converted 86 of his last 89 attempts (96.6%) since May 30 of last season, the highest percentage among closers with at least 40 opportunities in that span...since that date, Greg has five more saves than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel - 81) and Holland has allowed just 14 earned runs in 113.1 innings for a 1.11 ERA...he recorded his 100th career save on August 8 and since posting his first career save on August 3, 2011 vs. Baltimore, Holland has gone 113-for-123, the best save pct. at 91.9 among closers with at least 100 save opportunities.

SHARPENING THE SHORT GAME--The Royals, who finished the year second in the American League in infield hits with 158, have already accumulated 15 infield knocks in this postseason, easily the most of any of the playoff participants this October...the closest competition in infield hits this October are the Giants and Orioles with three apiece...Kansas City featured four in the Top 14 individually in infield knocks with Lorenzo Cain tied for third (28), Nori Aoki tied for sixth (27), Alcides Escobar tied for 12th (24) and Jarrod Dyson tied for 14th (22).

BOMBS AWAY--Kansas City’s lone run last night came via a Salvador Perez homer in the seventh inning...it was the 11th World Series homer in franchise history, joining the likes of Willie Aikens (4), Amos Otis (3), George Brett, Frank White and Darryl Motley...this year’s squad has hit nine home runs in its last seven games...Mike Moustakas has homered four times already to tie the franchise record for most home runs in a single postseason, a mark that was set by Aikens in 1980...in franchise history, only George Brett clubbed most postseason home runs in his career with 10...Moose is also just the second ninth-place hitter since 1903 to hammer four home runs in a postseason, tying Adam Kennedy from the 2002 Angels...Jason Varitek has four in his postseason career from the nine-hole.

THE WEEK THAT WAS IN AUGUST--KC’s run to the postseason wouldn’t have been possible if not for an August week of games against the two bay area entries in Major League Baseball...over a 7-day stretch, the Royals hosted these Giants followed by a 4-game visit from the Oakland A’s, featuring an opposing hurler who had “All-Star pitcher” on his resume...Kansas City won six of those games against the likes of Madison Bumgarner, Tim Hudson, Tim Lincecum, Sonny Gray, Scott Kazmir and Jeff Samardzija, while the lone loss was to Jon Lester.

HOME GROWN ROYALS--It was never a secret that for the Royals to contend, they’d have to do it with the combination of home grown talent and then enhance the roster via the trade and free agent route...of the 25 players on the World Series active roster, 12 were drafted or signed originally by the Royals...the group includes (draft round-year): Terrance Gore (20th-2011), Jarrod Dyson (50th-2006), Alex Gordon (1st-2005), Mike Moustakas (1st-2007), Salvador Perez (non-drafted free agent-2006), Billy Butler (1st-2004), Brandon Finnegan (1st-2014), Yordano Ventura (non-drafted free agent-2008), Eric Hosmer (1st-2008), Kelvin Herrera (non-drafted free agent-2006), Danny Duffy (3rd-2007) and Greg Holland (10th-2007).

AND THE REST OF THE SQUAD--The remaining dozen of the 2014 squad arrived via trades and free agency...that group includes (how acquired): Alcides Escobar and Lorenzo Cain (trade with Milwaukee-Dec., 2010), Josh Willingham (trade with Minnesota-2014), Jeremy Guthrie (trade with Colorado-July, 2012), Omar Infante (free agent-Dec., 2013), Wade Davis and James Shields (trade with Tampa Bay-Dec., 2012), Erik Kratz (trade with Toronto-July, 2014), Nori Aoki (trade with Milwaukee-Dec., 2013), Jason Vargas (free agent-Nov., 2013), Jason Frasor (trade with Texas-July, 2014), Jayson Nix (Waivers from Pittsburgh-2014) and Tim Collins (trade with Atlanta-July, 2010).

FOUR NOT NECESSARY RECENTLY--The Royals closed out the ALCS against Baltimore by “only” plating two runs in each of the final two games, but good enough for 2-1 victories and a trip to the Fall Classic...Kansas City has put up some phenomenal numbers when the offense has been able to get at least four runs across the plate in a game over the last two seasons, and this postseason has been no different...Kansas City is 8-0 to this point in the postseason and has scored at least four times in five of those games...during the regular season, KC was 69-14 when scoring at least four runs and combined with last year (64-14), the Royals are 105 games over .500 during the regular season when scoring at least four runs (133-28).

ROAD WARRIORS--The 4-0 road mark this postseason is consistent with the regular season as the Royals saved their best work for the road this year going 47-34 away from ‘The K’, five wins better than Kansas City totaled at home this year (42-39)...the road year turned around in Chicago, as KC entered play on July 22 in Chicago with a 26-25 record away from ‘The K’, but then reeled off a 21-9 record in road tilts, matching the Angels for the most road wins since that date...Kansas City was 8-1-1 in its last 10 road series played...the 47 road wins were the third most in franchise history and one win behind the ‘77 club for second highest success rate away from home.

RUNNIN’ ROYALS--The Royals have swiped 13 bases in this postseason, using eight different thieves to accomplish the total...KC opened the playoffs by tying an MLB postseason record with seven thefts in the win over Oakland, with seven different Royals recording steals...for the second straight year, the Royals led the Majors in stolen bases with 153 both this year and last season...Jarrod Dyson, despite being a part-time player, has swiped 30, 34 and now 36 in his last three seasons, totaling 100 bags in that span which was seventh among all big league thieves, most of whom play every day...KC was the only big league club with three players with at least 25 thefts, as Dyson is joined by Alcides Escobar (31) and Cain (28), marking the first time for the franchise since U.L. Washington, Willie Wilson and John Wathan each swiped at least 25 bags in 1983.

ON-THE-JOB TRAINING--This 2014 version of the Kansas City Royals entered the September 30 Wild Card Game with only five players who had previous postseason experience with Wade Davis, Omar Infante, Jayson Nix, James Shields and Raul Ibanez...with Ibanez inactive for the World Series, KC is down to four who have previous experience in October baseball.

GORE A BLUR ON THE BASES--Terrance Gore, a 23-year old outfielder from Macon, GA, has had a meteoric rise this season, culminating with a little over a month in the Majors thanks to the wheels he possesses...KC’s 20th round selection in 2011, Gore’s year began in Wilmington, KC’s Class A club in the Carolina League, where he pilfered 36 bags in 40 tries...to prepare him for a potential September big league audition, Gore was moved to Omaha (AAA), where he swiped 11 bases in 14 tries...he was then added as part of the September roster expansion and went 5-for-5 as a big league base thief...Gore has proven to be such a threat on the bases that he has been on each postseason roster to this point and swiped three bags in his first three games in the playoffs.

A LOOK BACK AT ‘14--Kansas City snapped its postseason dry spell with an 89-73 season, capped a week ago today with a 6-4 win over the White Sox in Chicago to finish one game behind the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central...the rollercoaster ride that was the 2014 season saw the Royals trail by as many as 6 1/2 games after play on June 1, only to reel off a 13-2 stretch to take a 1 1/2-game advantage in the Central on June 18...KC then fell into a 9-18 skid from June 19-July 21 to fall to eight games behind the Tigers, but a win in Chicago on July 22 jumpstarted a season-ending stretch in which the Royals were 41-23 and popped champagne corks for the first time in 29 years on September 26 with a win over the White Sox in U.S. Cellular Field...the two combatants in the ALCS were the two winningest teams in the American League from July 22 on, with the Royals posting 41 victories and the Orioles 42...the 89-victory season marked the most by the Kansas City franchise since winning 92 games in 1989...KC has coupled its last two seasons for a 175-149 mark for a .540 winning pct.

KEEPING IT IN THE YARD--The bullpen duo of Wade Davis and Kelvin Herrera combined for 140.0 homerless innings during the 2014 regular season...Davis tossed 72.0 frames and allowed only five extra-base hits (four doubles and a triple), while Herrera fired 68.0 innings and gave up 12 extra-base knocks (all doubles)...Davis, Herrera and the Dodgers’ Brandon League were the only three pitchers in the Majors who have worked at least 60.0 innings with no home runs surrendered.

DAVIS SETS RELIEF STRIKEOUT MARK--The breakout bullpen year of Wade Davis ended with 109 strikeouts, breaking the team record for a reliever held by fellow bullpen-mate Greg Holland, set last year, and Jim York, a reliever for KC in 1971 (103)...Davis attained his 109 K’s in 72.0 innings for a 13.6 strikeout to 9-inning ratio, the third best mark in the A.L. (minimum 60.0 innings).

NED LONGEST TENURED KC SKIPPER--Ned Yost has been at the helm for 775 regular season games as the Kansas City manager, surpassing Royals’ Hall of Famer skipper Dick Howser (770) for the most games managed in franchise history, and becoming the first manager since Howser to lead the Royals to the postseason...Yost has a 373-402 ledger as KC’s manager, including a 175-149 (.540) mark in the last two seasons...coupled with 457 wins in Milwaukee, Yost is tied for 73rd on the all-time managerial win list with 830 over his 11-year career, matching Fred Hutchinson’s total in a 12-year career as a skipper of the Tigers, Cardinals and Reds.
