THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs and Jaguars are set to duel for a second consecutive year at Arrowhead. Last season’s New Year’s Eve clash resulted in a 35-30 Chiefs victory which helped propel the Chiefs to a playoff berth after all the dust had settled on a wild final regular season weekend. Kansas City returns to Arrowhead for an important two-game homestand after a 30-16 win at San Diego (9/30). The Chiefs second consecutive win marked the 50th regular season victory for Herm Edwards and propelled the Chiefs into a three-way logjam atop the AFC West standings. KC will be seeking its second three-game winning streak of the Edwards era against a Jacksonville squad that is coming off a bye week. Dating back to ’90, Kansas City owns the NFL’s best regular season home record, owning a 103-34 (.752) mark at Arrowhead over that span. The Chiefs will seek to add to that total against a Jacksonville squad whose most recent victory was a convincing 23-14 road decision at Denver (9/23). A pair of the league’s top young defensive units will be on display in this contest. Kansas City currently ranks third in the league, allowing just 285.8 yards per game of total offense. In fact, Kansas City’s defense has allowed a league-low six offensive points in the second half this season and has pitched back-to-back second-half shutouts. The Jaguars are second in the NFL in scoring defense (11.3 ppg), while ranking fourth in the league in both total defense (287.7 ypg) and pass defense (150.7 ypg). Jacksonville also leads the NFL by sacking opponents once every 7.1 pass attempts. Chiefs rookie WR Dwayne Bowe (D1-07) set a KC single-game rookie record with 164 receiving yards at San Diego (9/30), breaking a mark that had stood since the franchise’s inaugural season in ’60. In addition, TE Tony Gonzalez tied the NFL’s all-time record for TD receptions by a player at his position (62). Two-time Pro Bowl RB Larry Johnson posted a season- high 123 rushing yards at San Diego, establishing a Chiefs career record with his 25th 100-yard rushing performance. Next week, KC is home vs. Cincinnati (10/14), while Jacksonville is home vs. Houston (10/14). THE SERIES The Chiefs are 2-4 in regular season action against the Jaguars. WIEGMANN SET FOR 100TH STRAIGHT START Chiefs C Casey Wiegmann is set to make his 100th consecutive regular

season start vs. Jacksonville. Wiegmann has taken every snap at center for Kansas City since his inaugural game with a club vs. the N.Y. Giants (9/23/01). Including two postseason games over that span, Wiegmann has taken 5,573 consecutive snaps for the Chiefs during that period.

During his seven-year stint with Kansas City, Wiegmann has been part of an offensive front that helped RB Priest Holmes set Chiefs career records for rushing yards (5,933) and rushing TDs (76). In 2006, he paved the way for RB Larry Johnson who established a KC single-season record with 1,789 rushing yards. A native of Parkersburg, IA (pop. 1,804), Wiegmann is one of four active NFL players from that Midwestern football Mecca, joining C Brad Meester (JAX), DE Jared DeVries (DET) and DE Aaron Kampman (GB).

REMEMBERING OUR FOUNDER The National Football League and the American sports community lost a

true treasure on December 13, 2006 when Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt passed away. Hunt served as the guiding force behind the formation of both the American Football League and the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Few individuals helped change the face of America’s favorite game for the better than this quiet Texan. Hunt played a key role in the AFL-NFL merger talks in the ‘60s and actually coined the term “Super Bowl.”

As part of a year-long tribute to Hunt in 2007, the Chiefs will wear a commemorative patch that prominently features the American Football League logo to serve as a reminder of Hunt’s formation of the AFL and the lasting impact the American Football League has made on the game of professional football. True to Hunt’s humble styles, the

letters “LH” are subtly displayed on the football of the AFL logo, symbolizing the fact that the Chiefs Founder always put the best interests of the league ahead of his own. The patch will be affixed to the left chest of both KC’s home and away jerseys, meaning this piece of woven symbolism will be worn over the heart of every Chiefs player.

GONZALEZ TIES NFL TD MARK FOR TIGHT ENDS Eight-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez owns 62 career TD catches, tying Shannon Sharpe for the NFL record for tight ends. Gonzalez ranks second in NFL history among tight ends in receptions (742) and receiving yardage (8,948), trailing only Sharpe (815-10,060). Gonzalez’s 62 total TDs with KC trail only RB Priest Holmes (83). Gonzalez ranks second in franchise history with 8,962 combined net yards. In addition, no tight end in NFL history owns more consecutive 60-catch campaigns (eight) than Gonzalez. Gonzalez owns 18 career 100-yard receiving games, trailing only WR Otis Taylor (19) for the top mark in Chiefs history. Those 18 100-yard games are fourth in NFL history among TEs, trailing only Kellen Winslow (24), Jackie Smith (22) and Sharpe (19). Gonzalez extended his team-record streak of games with at least one reception to 103 contests at San Diego (9/30), meaning only Ozzie Newsome (150) has a longer streak by a TE in NFL history. In six career games vs. Jacksonville, Gonzalez owns 33 catches for 360 yards with four TDs. He had five catches for 71 yards with a 22-yard TD at San Diego (9/30).

He originally joined the Chiefs as a recipient of the NFL’s Minority Coaching Fellowship in ’89. He later served as a scout (’90-91, ’95) and also coached defensive backs (’92-94).

Born in Fort Monmouth, NJ on April 27, 1954, Edwards served as Tampa Bay’s assistant head coach/DBs coach under Tony Dungy from ’96-00. The Arrowhead Advantage Kansas City owns an NFL-best 103-34 (.752) regular season mark at

Arrowhead dating back to ’90. Since the start of the 2002 campaign, the Chiefs are 9-2 (.818) at Arrowhead during the month of October. Only Philadelphia owns a better winning percentage in October home games over that span with a 9-1 (.900) record. KC is 7-2 at home under Herm Edwards, including a 35-30 victory vs. Jacksonville (12/31/06). The Jaguars are 14-18 (.438) on the road under Jack Del Rio, but are just 3-6 since the start of the 2006 campaign. Del Rio owns a 5-3 career mark against AFC West opponents.

Winning the Turnover Battle Always Important at Arrowhead The Chiefs are 44-4 (.917) at Arrowhead with a positive takeaway margin

dating back to ’95. KC has won 17 consecutive games when positive at home dating back to 2002, the third-longest active streak in the league. The Chiefs have also registered at least one takeaway in 23 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the NFL. KC is 6-2 under Edwards when positive.

KC was actually -2 (1 take/3 gives) vs. Jacksonville (12/31/06) and still managed to register a 35-30 victory. The Chiefs won’t want to tempt fate again when facing a Jaguars squad that is 24-6 (.800) under Jack Del Rio with a positive turnover mark. Over that same span, the Jaguars are 3-15 (.167) in road games with a negative turnover differential. Jacksonville has committed just three turnovers in 2007. Only Indianapolis (2) has commited fewer.

Thou Shalt Not Pass at Arrowhead The Chiefs are 29-3 (.906) at Arrowhead dating back to ’95 when the club

forces two or more INTs. Since the start of the 2002 campaign, KC also boasts a stellar 23-1 (.959) record at home when it registers 2.0 or more sacks. KC registered 5.0 sacks in the club’s first home contest, a 13-10 win vs. Minnesota (9/23). Opposing passers have compiled a league-low 62.6 rating against KC this season. The Chiefs currently have 11.0 sacks on the year, the club’s best four-game total since having 11.0 sacks at the four-game mark in 2003.

Jaguars QB David Garrard owns a 12-9 (.571) record as an NFL starter, including a 5-4 mark on the road. Garrard has not thrown an INT in 71.4% (15 of 21) of his career starts and has just two multi-INT games on his starting ledger. Garrard completed 10 of 18 passes for 140 yards with one TD and one INT in his initial start at Arrowhead (12/31/06), a 35-30 KC victory. Jacksonville and Tampa Bay are the only teams yet to throw an INT this season.

Huard has completed 70 of 104 passes (67.3%) for 958 yards with six TDs and no INTs, numbers that translate into a sizzling 115.8 rating. In fact, Huard has compiled a 100.0 rating or better in all four of those victories. Huard is 6-0 when he posts a 100.0-rating game and is 5-0 in such games with the Chiefs.

Chiefs, Jaguars Both Strong in Scoring Defense The Chiefs defense is allowing 13.0 offensive ppg, the eighth-lowest total

in the NFL. Kansas City is 54-8 (.871) at Arrowhead dating back to ’95 when holding foes to 21 points or less, including victories in 23 of the club’s last 24 games in those circumstances. Prior to MNF, the Chiefs were one of just four teams (JAX, NE, and TB) that have held their foes to 20 points or less in every contest this season. After a 13-10 victory vs. Minnesota (9/23), KC is now 41-0 at Arrowhead dating back to ’90 when holding opponents to 10 points or less.

Since the start of the 2006 campaign, the Chiefs have allowed just 161 points (17.9 ppg) in nine home contests. The highest point total that KC has permitted any opponent during that nine-game home stretch was a 30-point performance by Jacksonville (12/31/06). The Jaguars are 5-15 (.250) under Jack Del Rio on the road when being held to 21 points or less. Jacksonville is 0-13 all-time on the road when being held to 10 points or less, including an 0-5 mark in such contests under Del Rio. Jacksonville has averaged 20.2 ppg in nine road games dating back to the start of the 2006 campaign.

Jacksonville’s defense has been even better than Kansas City in terms of scoring defense in 2007, allowing just 34 total points, good for an 11.3 ppg average that ranks second in the league behind only Tampa Bay (11.0 ppg). Prior to Monday Night Football, Jacksonville and New England were the league’s only two squads to hold their first three foes to 14 points or less. Dating back to the start of the 2006 campaign, Jacksonville has allowed 16.2 ppg and has held seven foes to 10 points or less.

Chiefs Four-Game Defensive Report The Chiefs defense continues to make steady improvement under defensive

coordinator Gunther Cunningham. Kansas City has made significant progress in several key areas compared to just two years ago. Most notably, KC is permitting 83.0 fewer total yards per game and 8.3 fewer points per game compared to the four-game mark of the 2005 campaign.

Chiefs-Jaguars Halftime Stats The Chiefs are still seeking to secure their first halftime lead of the 2007

season. Kansas City is 52-7 (.881) at Arrowhead when leading at halftime dating back to ’95. The Chiefs also own a 7-1 record when holding a halftime lead under Herm Edwards. The Jaguars are 21-5 (.808) when leading at halftime under Jack Del Rio, but are just 12-21 (.363) when trailing after two quarters. Jacksonville led 17-7 at the half in a 23-14 win at Denver (9/23).

The Chiefs and Jaguars have both been adept at preventing scores early in games. KC has held two of its four opponents scoreless in the first quarter this season. Meanwhile, Jacksonville has only allowed one FG in the first quarter of its first three contests, making the Jaguars one of just five NFL clubs (CHI, PIT, TB and WAS) that have yet to permit a first-quarter TD in 2007.

Both clubs have also proved stingy in terms of relinquishing points in the second half. KC’s defense has not allowed an offensive TD in the second half in 2007. The Chiefs have given up just two FGs, meaning only Tennessee (3) has relinquished fewer second-half offensive points than KC (6). KC has pitched back-to-back second-half shutouts and are seeking to do it in three straight games for the first time since ’95 when the Chiefs led the NFL in scoring defense. Including opponent return scores, only Kansas City (13) and Tennessee (13) have relinquished fewer second-half points than Jacksonville (14) in 2007.

Chiefs to Face Talented Jaguars Rushing Tandem KC will square off against a Jacksonville squad that boasts a solid rushing

tandem in RBs Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew. That duo combined for 2,087 ground yards and 18 TDs in 2006, helping the Jaguars rank third in the NFL in rushing in 2006 at a 158.8 ypg clip. Since the start of the 2006 season, the Chiefs have permitted just 94.7 rushing ypg in nine contests at Arrowhead, a figure that ranks as the fifth-lowest home rushing average in the NFL.

RB Larry Johnson’s Rushing Stats At Arrowhead The Chiefs own a 13-1 (.929) record at Arrowhead when RB Larry Johnson

registers a 100-yard rushing game. KC is 11-0 at Arrowhead when Johnson rushes for two or more TDs, including a 35-30 win vs. Jacksonville (12/31/06) when Johnson had 33 carries for 138 yards and three TDs. The Chiefs also own a 9-0 record at Arrowhead when Johnson accumulates 30 carries or more.

In 16 career starts at Arrowhead, Johnson has averaged 124.7 rushing ypg and has accumulated 26 rushing TDs. He has topped the 100-yard barrier in 13 of those contest and has registered 51 runs of 10+ yards in those games. The Chiefs last 33 rushing TDs have all been scored by Johnson, the longest streak of rushing TDs by one player for the same team in NFL history.

Johnson is coming off a 123-yard performance. The Jaguars have allowed at least one rushing TD in each of their last five games. Jacksonville currently ranks 26th in the league in rushing defense, permitting 137.0 ypg. After permitting 282 rushing yards in a 13-10 loss vs. Tennessee (9/9), the Jaguars have relinquished an average of just 64.5 rushing ypg in their last two contests.

Final Statistical Tidbits on the Chiefs, Jaguars The Chiefs defense is tied for third in the league, forcing 32 negative plays.

The Jaguars lead the league, forcing a sack once every 7.1 pass plays. Jacksonville’s defense is tied for 30th in the league on third down, allowing opponents to convert at a 50.0% clip (17 of 34). The Jaguars have gone 44 consecutive games without having a QB throw for a 300-yard game, the second-longest drought in the league behind San Francisco (47). The Chiefs defense has gone 14 straight games at home without permitting a 300-yard passer. WR Dwayne Bowe is on pace to catch 72 passes which would smash the KC rookie record of 55 set by RB Abner Haynes in ’60.

LAST GAME

The Chiefs rebounded from three different 10-point deficits before scoring the game’s final 24 points en route to a 30-16 victory. Kansas City scored a defensive TD for the first time since 2005, while rookie WR Dwayne Bowe enjoyed a breakout performance in a game that marked the 50th regular season victory in the head coaching career of Herm Edwards.

San Diego opened the game with a quick 10 points on their first two possessions. First, a 12-play scoring drive resulted in a 24-yard K Nate Kaeding field goal. Next, QB Philip Rivers completed passes to three different players before RB LaDainian Tomlinson scored on a five-yard TD run.

The defense gave the Chiefs their first positive boost as S Jarrad Page recovered a fumble at the San Diego 22-yard line. Kansas City pounded RB Larry Johnson seven times for 19 yards before coming up just short of the end zone. K Dave Rayner would boot a 21-yard field goal to pull Kansas City within 10-3.

The two teams would alternate field goals in the second quarter as Kaeding sandwiched three-pointers from 51 and 38 yards around a 25-yarder from Rayner. That kicking competition put the score at 16-6 at intermission.

Kansas City started to chip away at the Chargers lead early in the third quarter with another Rayner field goal, this time from 41 yards out, making the count 16-9.

LB Derrick Johnson would keep the pressure on San Diego when intercepted the second Rivers pass of the afternoon, setting the Chiefs up on the San Diego 36-yard line. From there Huard hit Larry Johnson for a 14-yard pick up, then watched TE Tony Gonzalez out-jump two defenders for a 22-yard TD tying the game at 16-16 late in the third quarter. The touchdown catch was the 62nd of Gonzalez’s career to tie TE Shannon Sharpe for the most TD receptions by a TE in NFL history.

Huard and the Chiefs offense stayed on the attack minutes later. After a 19-yard gain from Gonzalez, rookie WR Dwayne Bowe caught a slant pass, spun out of a tackle and raced for a 51-yard touchdown. Bowe’s third consecutive game with a TD reception gave him eight catches for 164 yards, the highest single-game receiving yardage tally by a rookie in franchise history.

The Chiefs put the game on ice when Johnson made his second big defensive play by sacking Rivers and knocking the ball loose, allowing rookie CB Tyron Brackenridge to execute the scoop-and-score. Brackenridge raced 50 yards for the touchdown and gave the Chiefs a 30-16 lead with 7:37 left to play.

The Chargers would threaten to score once more, but as they faced a fourth-and-goal from the five-yard line Page made a diving pass break-up to give the ball back to Kansas City on downs with only 3:41 left in regulation. With a 37-yard run, Johnson would run the clock out and seal the Chiefs win.

GAME NOTES• With his 123-yard rushing performance, RB Larry Johnson moved into sole possession of the Chiefs record with 25 career 100-yard games.• Johnson also moved into third on the KC career rushing chart with 4,468 yards, passing RB Ed Podolak (4,451).

In a New Year’s Eve match-up of two teams with faint playoff hopes, the Chiefs found a way to keep their post-season chances alive with a 35-30 win over the Jaguars. The Kansas City win propelled the Chiefs to a 9-7 record and a berth in the playoffs, an unlikely scenario for a club that started the season 0-2.

In addition to piling up three TDs on the day, RB Larry Johnson also etched his name in both the NFL and Chiefs record books. He surpassed his own Chiefs single-season record for rushing yards with 1,789 and topped the 100-yard mark for the 11th time this season, also a franchise record. Johnson’s 33 carries on the day also put him at 416 on the season, the most in NFL history for a single season.

For the third time on the season, rookie S Bernard Pollard got his hand on a punt, this time blocking P Chris Hanson’s kick and recovering the ball in the end zone for a TD and a 7-0 lead.

Jacksonville would tie the game at 7-7 in the first minute of the second quarter when QB David Garrard dumped a short pass to RB Fred Taylor who ran for a 26-yard touchdown. After Kansas City went three-and-out on its next possession, the Jaguars got a 33-yard field goal to move in front 10-7.

Johnson brought the Chiefs back with a 40-yard run into the Red Zone, then scored on a one-yard TD dive on fourth-and-goal to grab a 14-10 lead midway through the second quarter.

The Chiefs would strike again just before the half on a flea flicker that Johnson lateraled to QB Trent Green, who tossed a perfect 35-yard TD to WR Eddie in the corner of the end zone to stretch the lead to 21-10 at the half.

On Jacksonville’s second play of the second half CB Ty Law intercepted a screen pass at the Jaguars 18-yard line and returned it down to the two. On the very next play Johnson took the handoff and raced around the left end untouched for his second touchdown of the game pushing the lead to 28-10.

QB Quinn Gray then entered in relief and rallied the Jaguars with 19 and 32-yard completions before scor-ing on a nine-yard TD scramble. The Chiefs would also use their backup signal caller when QB Damon Huard replaced an injured Green for one series. Huard promptly engineered a seven-play, 75-yard drive that featured a 40-yard juggling catch by Kennison and a 12-yard scoring run from Johnson to go ahead 35-17.

Gray and the Jaguars refused to quit, quickly finding the end zone on another TD run from Gray, this time from 17 yards out to pull within 11 points at 35-24 late in the third quarter.

The Jaguars would trim the lead to 35-30 when they recovered a Chiefs fumble near midfield and converted on a five-yard TD run up from RB Maurice Jones-Drew. However, Jacksonville’s two-point attempt failed when Gray mishandled the exchange from center with 5:00 left in regulation.

Needing to kill the clock, Edwards went back to his workhorse Johnson to drive home the victory. The Chiefs handed the ball off to their Pro Bowl runner nine times for 27 hard-earned yards on the drive, allowing them to eat up the final 5:00 and seal the 35-30 win.
