We at KCH&G are no strangers to beautiful residences in the area, but we’ve been
blown away by our 2009 Boulevard of Dreams homes. And we’re pretty sure
you will be, too.
Right after we completed our 2007 Boulevard of Dreams Homes Tour, we were back at it,
securing the community and homes you’ll be seeing this month. Our initial meetings with the
developers of Cedar Creek made us feel right at home, and we knew the community would be
perfect for hosting our three show homes. We brought on different builders, as well, confident
in their ability to give us something to swoon over. And, boy, did they!
Although I could never play favorites, I definitely have my top picks of special places. First,
I can’t get over how creative and, yes, even private The Prairie Stone’s front landscape is. The
waterfall and bridge in conjunction with the courtyard highlighted by a stone entry make quite
the impression whether you’re arriving for the first time or the hundredth.
Second, who wouldn’t love to snuggle up and spend the entire weekend in The Monaco’s
master suite — it’s like visiting the glamorous side of Paris without leaving the States.
The crystal, marble and silks are practically divine. No husband necessary; invite your
girlfriends instead to this feminine retreat.
Finally, The Nantucket’s kitchen and surrounding spaces induce giddiness with their natural
light and happy colors that make everyday living fun. Even in the laundry room, I wouldn’t
mind doing my most dreaded house chore: ironing. Yuck…oh wait, yay!
While each home is the epitome of luxury home building and the source of many of the
latest design trends, perhaps what’s most impressive is how distinct their styles are from one
another — rustic, French, coastal…something for everyone. Like I said before, you’re going to
love this year’s tour. Come check it out!
WE THANK THE FOLLOWING ORGANIZATIONSFOR THEIR PARTICIPATION!

KCH&G’s 2009 Boulevard of Dreams Homes Tour is not just about the
beautiful homes designed and built to impress — each sold ticket helps
raise money for local children in need. More than 150,000 kids have been
impacted by distributions from our charity partner, the Love Fund for Children,
since the organization’s inception 27 years ago.
Jim Thomas, who has served as the board’s enthusiastic president since 2003,
sees the homes tour as a first-class event in a quality neighborhood that will
offer attendees a vivid snapshot of the Love Fund. “Our volunteers will be
hosting the tour; that person-to-person contact with the public is invaluable and
indispensable,” he says.
The Love Fund for Children started in 1982 with popular WDAF-TV anchor
Cynthia Smith launching an on-air segment called “Thursday’s Child” that
featured foster children from Kansas City needing adoptive homes. The station
began receiving small donations from a concerned public, and Cynthia approached
Jim and other influential community leaders to form an independent group to
oversee funds. Eventually “Thursday’s Child” morphed into the Love Fund for
Children and has raised approximately $5.5 million for children in need; at any
given time, the Fund has between $250,000 and $350,000 available for requests.
“The Love Fund elevates public awareness for funds, goods and services for
children in need, ages 18 and under,” says Joyce Eacock, director of special events.
Funds cover anything from eyeglasses, medical equipment and beds to abuse
counseling, dental treatments and myriad other needs.
“We rely on a vast network of case workers, medical professionals and other
third-party professionals to be our eyes and ears in the community. They observe,
identify and validate a need, then apply to the Love Fund for assistance on behalf
of a child in their care,” Joyce says.
She also notes that the Love Fund’s mission is crucial in these modern times of
government budget-cutting. “As more government programs are eliminated or
budgets are severely reduced, children’s needs still exist. Without our fundraising
efforts, the thousands of children we serve each year would not receive help,”
she says. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

And that’s just not acceptable, according
to Jim. The board meets monthly to
determine how to distribute donations to
requests on the docket, and the Love
Fund League, a group of dedicated and
exceptional volunteers comprised of men
and women of various ages and gifts,
supports the mission to improve children’s
lives in whatever way it can.
The Love Fund operates with the FOX
4 station’s encouragement and support.
The organization’s office is physically
located at WDAF with its 2.5-person
administrative staff, including Executive
Director Lisa Herron. FOX 4 also assists in
volunteer personnel, disseminating public
service announcements and sponsoring
some of the fundraisers, such as the annual
5K Walk/Run Event. Lisa says the Love
Fund thrives in great part because of the
station’s involvement and passion for it.
“Of course, FOX 4 is instrumental in
telling the public of our successes and our
needs,” she says.
Corporate entities and community
groups also have helped create success.
“eData Solutions, CVS Pharmacy,
Applebee’s International and Silpada
Designs are just a few of our loyal
supporters, and many of them have
employees who serve on our Love Fund
League of volunteers,” Jim says.
In addition, countless organizations
have named the Love Fund as benefactor
of their fundraising efforts. The Love Fund
provides other organizations with support,
too. Jim cites playground equipment for
local battered-women shelters that house
lots of children, and each summer, a Love
Fund-sponsored camp at Smithville Lake
for inner-city kids.
Joyce reflects that KCH&G’s Boulevard
of Dreams Homes Tour is the perfect
partner for the Love Fund. “We’re in the
business of answering functional needs of
children, and helping them develop self-
esteem and identity. The involvement with
the homes tour will help us get that
message out to a compassionate audience.”
CHARITY Love Fund
To reach the stature of elegance and luxury evident in the Boulevard
of Dreams homes, our builders required a little help from their
friends. Many subcontractors donated time and/or upgraded materials
for the noble cause of raising money for the Love Fund. A company
who had a big hand in it all was Nebraska Furniture Mart in Kansas
City, Kan.
“In general, when building a model home, you work to get better
pricing with your suppliers and vendors,” notes The Nantucket builder
James LaVoy. “Nebraska Furniture Mart was able to cost-effectively
show their latest and greatest products in our homes. It’s about finding
a balance for both parties.”
Nebraska Furniture Mart’s Kansas City Store Director, Jeff Lind,
agrees about the win-win partnership and adds that there’s a third party
who benefits. “The No. 1 reason we wanted to be involved was for the
Love Fund,” he notes. “This was a way for us to help with a great cause
while showcasing many of the designer products people may not know
we carry.”
The Boulevard designers themselves were unfamiliar with some of
NFM’s product. “When the Boulevard designers came into the store,
they already had plans for what they wanted, they were just unsure of
what we had to offer,” says Jan Pouppirt, Design Gallery manager, who
set them up with an in-store designer to show them what was available.
While NFM specializes in all price-points on a number of items
from appliances to furnishings, the superstore carries the most sought-
after brand names, such as Viking, Sub-Zero and Wolf for the kitchen,
and Century, Henredon and Lorts for the living areas. Ultimately, the
designers found exactly what they were looking for to achieve their
individual styles.

Experience Granite, Mother Nature’s Beauty
The Western edge of luxury in Kansas City is actually in
Olathe. Built on more than 4,500 wooded acres with
streams and lakes, rolling hills and limestone bluffs, Cedar
Creek offers resort-style living in the suburbs.
Open since 1992, this master-planned community contains 15
beautifully landscaped luxurious neighborhoods priced from the
$300,000s to more than $5 million. Only one-third of the acreage has
been developed so far. Ken Rosberg, managing broker of Cedar Creek
Realty, says the development has grown steadily over the years, aver-
aging 50 sales per year. More than 1,000 homes have been built
among the mature trees and varied topography, bringing to life a
variety of architectural styles highlighting the golf course, lake front
or treed valley.
In the heart of Cedar Creek is the Shadow Glen Golf Club, an 18-
hole award-winning private golf course designed by Tom Watson.
Winding through Cedar Creek, the course was named Best New
Private Course of the Year by Golf Digest in 1989 and voted to the
coveted Golf Digest Top 100 list in 1995. Ken feels this was initially
what attracted many buyers to the area.
“Cedar Creek is a special place,” he comments. “It offers a
setting unlike any other in Johnson County. It is one of the most
picturesque settings.”
Other amenities include four lighted tennis courts, an indoor
gymnasium, two swimming pools, jogging and walking trails that
meander through the community, several recreational park areas, and
more than 1,000 acres of undisturbed natural green space.

The resort lifestyle at Cedar Creek also revolves around the 65-acre
Shadow Lake, which is open for sailing, boating and fishing. It is
stocked with more than 250,000 fish and includes a dockside park and
launch facility.
The highly anticipated KCH&G 2009 Boulevard of Dreams Homes
Tour takes place at the North Shore Estates, nestled high on a bluff
overlooking the valley and the golf course. Eighty-five premier
homesites will accommodate a variety of styles ranging from 4,000 to
8,000 square feet and priced between $750,000 and $3 million.
The three show homes open for touring will be priced between
$1.75 million and $2 million. “The tour will showcase the latest
and greatest in technology and decor, but spectacular views from the
best lots are really what separate this tour from other homes tours,”
Ken says.

The Monaco by Bryant-Ratliff
Construction has a Country French manor
flavor, featuring a reverse one-and-a-half-
story floor plan, including four bedrooms
and 4.5 baths spread over 7,100 square
feet. Builder Ron Ratliff says the
opportunity to help the Love Fund was an
enticement to participate in the Boulevard
of Dreams tour. “It’s a great charity to
be involved in, and Cedar Creek is an
awesome development — really the perfect
place to showcase our product,” he adds.
The Prairie Stone by B.L. Rieke &
Associates is a rustic, comfortable home
with five bedrooms and 6.5 baths in 5,670
square feet, while The Nantucket, Forner-
LaVoy Builders’ vision of coastal New
England cottage charm has a 6,250-
square-foot plan with four bedrooms and
4.5 baths. Builder James LaVoy is not only
a frequent builder in Cedar Creek, he is
also a resident. “We love it there. It’s a
great place to live, and shows we live what
we speak,” he notes.
Cedar Creek has a list of featured
builders who have met a strict set of
standards, are members of the Home
Builders Association and have experience
with the wooded and rolling terrain of
the community; however, other builders are
welcome at North Shore Estates, provided
that plans are approved by the design
review committee.
Cedar Creek falls within the boundaries
of both the Olathe School District and
the DeSoto School District. One of the
elementary schools is onsite within
Cedar Creek.
“The architectural detail, established
landscaping and resort-style amenities
combine to make Cedar Creek, and
specifically North Shore Estates, the
premier upper-bracket community in the
area. It offers the perfect setting for dream
homes,” Ken summarizes.

Beautifying homes in Kansas City for over 50 years
In the concept stage of this model, builder Bruce Rieke, wife and designer, Antonia
(Toni), and their team brainstormed ideas for the floor plan and numerous creative
features that you see today. “One special feature is the exterior,” says architect Gerald
Janssen. “The ‘Colorado lodge’ look is a particularly fun part about this house.”
Logs and timbers retrieved from the Riekes’ own land that accent the interior of the
house are examples of the extra time and detail spent on this home. Bruce and his trim
carpenters hand-scraped them themselves — “which is kind of fun,” he adds — giving
the logs a unique look and adding to the overall Western theme.
With their longstanding contractors and designer, the B.L. Rieke team worked round-
the-clock to get the house done by tour time, and nothing says teamwork better than a
finished product that everyone can be pleased with. “We have such a talented group of
people,” Toni says. “It took all of them to get where we are. It’s a really neat working
environment — they’re all like family.”
Bruce also adds that this team earned accolades for a previous home they built in
Cedar Creek last year, winning an award for it during the 2008 Fall Parade of Homes.
Likewise, the Prairie Stone staff is proud to return to the community and looks forward
to this year’s fundraiser that benefits the Love Fund for Children.
BRUCE AND TONI RIEKE, B.L. RIEKE & ASSOCIATES
Bruce Rieke grew up working in his family’s concrete foundation company. By being
involved in the family business, he became directly connected to the construction
industry, and this year, celebrates his 20th year in the home-building business.
Toni has been the interior designer of all their model homes for the past 15 years.
“Bruce and I work well together,” she says. Beginning simply as the bookkeeper, she has
been exclusively involved in all of the architectural design from the beginning to the end
of construction, as well as the interior merchandising.
When the husband and wife team aren’t working together, they enjoy spending time
with their 17-year-old daughter, Savannah, and 8-year-old son, Antone, whom they

gardening and riding four-wheelers.
GERALD JANSSEN, ELSWOOD SMITH CARLSON ARCHITECTS
Graduating from Kansas State University in 1977 with a degree in architecture, Gerald
Janssen worked with a few firms before settling with Elswood Smith Carlson Architects
in 1980. “I was really interested in residential design, and I’ve been doing houses ever
since,” he says.
Architecture aside, he spends his free time gardening and collecting and shopping for
retro furniture with his wife, Kay, a hobby they started a decade ago. Completing this
dynamic household, his daughter, Rachel, is a sophomore at Kansas State University,
interested in becoming a teacher, and high-school senior, Greg, is interested in visual
arts/broadcast journalism.

To create a home of this caliber, it took input from numerous partners. “Anyone who
had an idea, we listened to,” says builder Ron Ratliff. “I consider all subcontractors
to be artists and laborers in their own right.”
In addition to talent, it takes kindness and charity to build such a home. “All
participants have been very generous with the builders to make available state-of-the-art
offerings in home construction and furnishings to ensure that our custom home will
showcase the latest and greatest in custom home design and be truly worthy of the term
‘dream home,’” adds designer JoAnn Romano.
RON RATLIFF AND RANDY BRYANT, BRYANT-RATLIFF CONSTRUCTION
Work aside, Ron Ratliff is a family man. He and his family — wife, Cheryl, and daughter,
Ashley — like to spend as much time as possible at their lake house at the Ozarks.
Golfing and boating are two of Ron’s favorite hobbies, as well as gardening and listen-
ing to music — sometimes both at the same time.
Randy Bryant, Ron’s business partner, enjoys the same family activities with his wife,
Kim, and two sons, Cole and Davin. But when it comes to work, it’s the strong partnership
that’s kept the company successful for so long — Ron works closely with each client and
creates the design, while Randy works with the subcontractors and builds the product. “We
like to do stuff that nobody else does, and we take everything to the max,” Ron says.
PATRIC TIERNEY, AIA
Biking every weekend, hiking, skiing and backpacking with friends — yes, this is the side
of architect Patric Tierney that most Kansas Citians don’t see. His less active interests
include photography and reading. “I take pictures of work I’ve done and vacations we’ve
been on,” he says. That means a lot of photos, since he and his wife, Vicki, have been
married for 30 years. Their oldest daughter, Jennifer, followed in her father’s footsteps,
recently graduating with a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Kansas,
while her two other siblings, Jessica and Sean, are in college.
Patric graduated in 1982 from Iowa State University with a bachelor’s and master’s
degree in architecture and has owned his own firm since ’89, after the company he
worked for closed its doors. “It was as good a time as any [to start a business], and I’ve
been working this way ever since,” he says. “I love designing homes for people, and I
hope to never retire.”
JOANN ROMANO, ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS
“Yes, I have blueprints in my back pocket, plans in my notebook, creative ideas in my
head and glaze under my nails,” JoAnn Romano says with a smile. “I’m not the typical
designer.” In her seventh year in the business as a designer and faux finisher (with
education ranging from JCCC, Chicago and Italy), she’s not afraid to get dirty and
neither is her husband of 25 years, Dale, a third-generation master tile setter.
When the two aren’t working side by side on the job site, they enjoy traveling and
discovering architecture in other parts of the country and around the world. “I love to see
the hand of the artist in architecture,” she says.

It takes a village to raise a house — at least one that has a floor plan everyone can agree
on. The Nantucket is the result of a focus group of representative homeowners who
gave input on what was important to them in a home. Their answers contributed to the
fresh layout seen inside and out. “We all worked together as a team, developing the
concept to the final design you see built today,” says architect Scott Bickford.
The intricate planning process has been beneficial for all involved. “We were looking
for a way to market our focus group house plan, bring attention to the Love Fund and
hopefully make everybody winners in the end,” builder Rick Forner says.
RICK FORNER AND JAMES LAVOY, FORNER-LAVOY BUILDERS
Rick Forner has been in the building industry for more than 20 years, starting his own
construction company years ago. But after building a home in 1999 for client James LaVoy,
who has a background in business management and information technology consulting, a
partnership began.
These days, Rick and his wife keep busy with their two sons. When he’s not attending
a Cub or Boy Scouts meeting, he trades in his tool belt for helmets or skis. “I like riding
dirt bikes, water and snow skiing, and I’m a wine enthusiast,” Rick says. “I’m an old
California boy who was raised on a motorcycle. It was my first love.”
James shares Rick’s love of wine as well as family activities like coaching his daughter’s
and son’s baseball, softball and football teams. If not coaching or woodworking, he’s
hard at work making sure all office, sales and marketing efforts run flawlessly for Forner-
LaVoy. “I try to use my experience as a homeowner to bring that perspective to our
processes and approach, improving the experience for our customers,” he explains.
SCOTT BICKFORD AND LYLE BONN, BICKFORD + COMPANY
Scott Bickford’s architecture firm has been around for 29 years, known metro-wide for
designing homes that people around Kansas City immediately recognize and appreciate. But
he doesn’t do it alone. He has a team of 14, and designer Lyle Bonn is one of them. Lyle’s
background includes drawing, drafting and art, and with such experience, it’s not hard to
believe it was his concept that ultimately resulted in the floor plan for The Nantucket.
Scott, a seasoned architect, especially when it comes to the Boulevard of Dreams
homes (he designed two of the houses for the 2007 tour), has been doing this for a long
time, and it’s easy to see he loves what he does. When time allows for him to be away
from work, he travels with his wife, interior designer Linda Carroll, as well as spending
time with friends, and sometimes just relaxing to the sounds of reggae music.
GAIL GOLDEN, ALLIED MEMBER ASID, HOBSON INTERIORS
After being a stay-at-home mom for 15 years, Gail Golden decided to return to the
workforce. She graduated from the Pierce School of Interior Design and took jobs with
a couple firms during a 10-year span. She landed at Hobson Interiors in 1986, right after
the Kansas City store opened its doors to the public. (The Clinton, Mo.-based store has
been around for more than 50 years.) For the past 33 years, she has enjoyed her career
path and appreciates her involvement in projects like the Boulevard of Dreams.
“Building one large home and being solely responsible [for the design] is a big challenge
and honor, and with this type of home, I thought it would be a lot of fun, and it has been,”
she says.

With no obstructions to the wooded landscape trailing from
the home’s private backyard, the Riekes and team have gracefully
complemented the existing natural beauty, while up front a
naturalized berm with a rushing water feature and lush plantings
maintain distinction and privacy.
Fundamentally, the home is integrated into the surroundings,
concentrating on what is important — quality craftsmanship and
intimate spaces enhanced with the unexpected nuance. Massive,
hand-carved timbers, elegant brick archways, stacked stone
walls…they’re all here in abundance.
The result transforms this house into a welcoming contemporary
retreat for the future homeowner.
If you want an example of total escape, look no further than
B.L. Rieke & Associates’ interpretation of bliss: down-to-
earth attitude with out-of-this-world amenities. “We decided
to build a home with a contemporary edge that invites the
outside in. It’s a concept that’s comfortably laid-back yet
brings together a big sense of style…or, as we like to call it,
‘John Wayne chic,’” interior designer Toni Rieke says.
The Prairie Stone not only fits the expectations of those
familiar with the company’s work — “We are known for building
houses that integrate handcrafted details blended with rustic,
natural elements,” builder Bruce Rieke says — it surpasses them.
It’s a story-and-a-half of pure livability that capitalizes on the
North Shore Estates’ picturesque cliff setting.
THIS HOME ATTRACTS NATURE-LOVERS WITH ITSHANDSOME MIX OF RUSTIC, PRAIRIE STYLE.

Keeping guests interested in the dining room will come not only from the cook’s hand but by
the inventive wall treatment dressed in layers of warm copper-colored luster.
Under the ceiling designed with a wheel of wood beams, the focus here is a weighty
black carved table surrounded by six upholstered chairs. A recessed niche holds the buffet
topped with a hexagonal mirror that reflects three 10-foot by 10-foot hand-hewn fir timbers
that visually separate this room from the adjoining public spaces.
Anchoring the furnishings is a tightly woven Berber carpet inset into a 12-inch ribbon of
Brazilian cherry wood.
ELEGANT REPAST
Step inside the front entryway and the drama
unfolds right before your eyes. It begins
seductively with an open-knot wooden newel
post then a flight of 16 cherry wood treads
each faced with travertine tile. It’s no ordinary
staircase, featuring grooved, tree-bark iron
balustrades that emulate the naturalistic theme
throughout the house. Climbing past a faux-
painted niche framing that special piece of
favored art, this winding staircase is the
epitome of elegance.

Multiple pathways lead to the heart of the home: the kitchen. This is a space that concentrates on
details designed to make cooking a delight. “I love the chiseled-edge granite farmhouse sink and
the intricate metallic tile design in the rough-slate backsplash. Bruce really likes the idea of a coffee
service area that’s tucked into its own niche by the fridge. Everything in this kitchen is convenience-
driven,” Toni says.
Bruce’s signature design starts with knotty cherry cabinets rubbed with a black stain, glazed then
sealed in a velvet-soft finish. Each self-closing cabinet is accented with handmade bronze pulls.
Complementing the dark metal is a dramatic, form-fitting copper vent hood designed just for this space.
A recessed tray ceiling — another signature design for the builder — is accented with mosaic
slate tile and five pendant task lights. “We think the whole space is dynamic, but in addition to the
beautiful granite-topped island, what many people will notice is the brick archway highlighted by
ledge stone columns at the breakfast bar,” Bruce says.
GRATEFUL GATHERINGS
Retire after a long day into this inviting study that begs you
to sit a spell. Bruce blended a variety of textures within a
soothing palette of earthy neutrals that will undoubtedly
cause you to linger.
A solid brick fireplace surround is the perfect backdrop
for a hand-hewn timber mantel Bruce made from a
trunk found on his property. Combined with a tongue-and-
groove vaulted ceiling and bronze-toned walls, here’s a
study to contemplate.

No matter how big or small the house,
family and friends inevitably end up in
the kitchen, “so we designed this room
to accommodate a crowd,” Bruce says.
It’s easy enough to use the warming
oven or beverage center situated in the
oversized island. Then, when dinnertime
rolls around, simply serve directly to
the kitchen table with seating for eight.
Like the adjacent great room, this
room features an expansive 14-foot
bank of windows overlooking acres of
scenic woods.
DINNER IS SERVED
Great rooms are so named because they are just that…great.
This one manages to impress without overwhelming.
It all starts with the unique double-turn ceiling fan, which is
a conversation point in itself, but then again, so is the alder
mantel detailed with rifle casings.
Real, not veneered, Apache ledge stone at the hearth and
kitchen columns flanks the room with rustically elegant texture.
In turn, the stonework perfectly complements the satiny knotty
alder wood trim and Brazilian cherry wood floor. Niches
include a display shelf backed with slate and a custom cabinet
designed to hold a 54-inch television.
“The woods are such a bonus for this lot, permitting so much
privacy that we decided to leave this beautiful bank of nine
windows minimally dressed,” Toni adds.

There’s a whole lot of fun to be had in this 2,000-square-foot recreation center loaded with eye candy. Maybe it’s the
impressive water-glass-fronted wine cellar or the 400-pound hand-hewn pine logs that carve up the space into three distinct
areas: bar, media and recreation area. All
in all, this casual and unique room begins
the moment you realize you’ve stepped
into a bit of rustic heaven.
Noticeably, prints representing life on
the farm and oils of the Wild West
painted by Jeannie Pflumm set the stage
for bellying up to the granite-topped,
semicircular bar. Three pendant lights
illuminate the stacked stone bar and
intricately designed mosaic-tiled soffit.
An 80-inch home theater is specifically
designed for those who won’t be able
to budge from the cushy leather
seating. Then again, when the mood
strikes, there’s always a game of billiards
waiting nearby.

custom mosaics commissioned in Beirut, Lebanon, The Monaco
invites attention to every aspect of its design.
Hammering out the details adds to its first-class appeal,
whether you see them or not. For instance, the plan calls for
handicap-accessible doors throughout to accommodate those
with disabilities now or in the future. Also thinking ahead,
unfinished space in the basement is ready to become a game
room or storm shelter, while an elevator could someday be
placed in a prepared cavity in the wall. “Everything that’s done
has to be coordinated,” says builder Ron Ratliff — even the
behind-the-scenes electrical system is color-coordinated and
organized. This kind of dedicated craftsmanship doesn’t go
unnoticed. Take it all in on this visual tour.
Glitz and glamour meet cozy comfort in this fully
customized 7,104-square-foot home. From the
cobblestone path outside the entry to the 22
chandeliers throughout the home, every inch was carefully
considered and handled by professionals.
“We came up with a theme, and then that drove the design,”
says designer JoAnn Romano, who spent months faux painting
nearly every room in designs from animal hides to bamboo
groves. The result offers a lived-in, distressed feel that suits
the project as a whole. In combination with hickory floors
throughout the main level, dramatic wood beams and mantels,
hand-carved cabinetry with intricately rounded edges, and three

You’ll be greeted by a dramatic French-inspired foyer surrounded by an
elegant dining room with faux metallic ceiling, a masculine office and a
prominent staircase with triptych painting that JoAnn named “Gardens of
Versi.” “When you walk in, it’s the ‘wow’ factor,” JoAnn says. “You feel
like you’re at home but transported to a French hamlet.”

Past the foyer, the great room is more intimate, with seating
for late-night chats and a front-row view overlooking the
bluffs. The fireplace is a knockout focal point, surrounded
by gorgeous onyx tile. Display niches illuminated by light
boxes above flank the hearth.

Though there’s plenty of room for multiple cooks in the kitchen, the
adjoining hearth room allows the family to be nearby but not in the
way. At the center, a moss stone fireplace reaches from floor to
ceiling, one of six in the house. “We say with every room we want to
‘max’ it out, so I don’t really have a favorite [space], but the
kitchen/hearth room is taken to the next level because you have
everything you’ll need and more,” Ron says.
PULL UP A CHAIR
“The house has entertainment and private zones but
concentrates on the large hearth room and kitchen,” says
architect Patric Tierney. Fully loaded, this kitchen
includes two dishwashers, one a pan scrubber, the other
all-purpose; a full-size refrigerator with refrigerated
drawers; a separate freezer with freezer drawers; large
island with built-in steamer and trough sink; warming
drawer and oven; and bed & breakfast fireplace.
Underneath it all are travertine tiles from Turkey.

To entertain a group or just yourself, easy access to the wine bar is a very good thing. With its wine fridge and custom racks, you
can store several bottles on hand. Plus, it looks great with one of the unique mosaics, copper sink and its own tiny chandelier tucked
under a bank of architectural windows. What’s left but to raise your glass to a good time?
LUSH ADDITION
Outdoor living is hot, and so is this lanai when the
fireplace gets going. Enjoy nature during any season
with this screened-in space off the main level or just
use it for its Wolf grill included in the outdoor
kitchen. Access it from the skywalk linking it to the
driveway or the 8-foot-wide entry when both sliding
glass doors are open.

NATURE’S CALLING
On your way to the master bedroom,
don’t overlook the half bath, with a
painted Bombay chest vanity and an
eight-layer wall finish that’s embedded
with crystal beads. “This is the most
impressive half bath we’ve completed
as a team,” Ron says.

After moving into the master bedroom,
you may want to do just that …
move in. Striking in a simple palette
of neutral whites and real crystal
chandeliers (all crystal you see in this
house is real), its serenity is both
lulling and invigorating, its femininity
obvious. Wanting to create spaces that
would suit both genders, JoAnn says,
“We balanced the femininity of the
master bedroom with the masculinity
of the office.”
The atmosphere seeps into the
luxuriously appointed bath, which has
an oversized tub set in a marble tub
deck; walk-in shower with custom
glass enclosure; custom curved his-
and-her vanities; and a room-sized
closet complete with a safe room
strategically located behind a full-
length mirror, with telephone and
Internet access.

If you’re in the mood to close off the rest of the world, head to the back of the lower level where you’ll find the home
theater. The plush purple carpet and oversized chairs are ready to take you to another place. Get lost in a movie on the 100-
inch projection screen or contemplate the cosmos looking up at the starry night constellation. The projector is hidden, and
the walls have a faux suede finish that absorbs sound. Just pull the curtains shut (actually they’re remote-controlled) and
enjoy the surround sound from the comfort of your own couch. “This is how a theater should be,” Ron says.

Builder Randy Bryant’s favorite part of the
house is the downstairs kitchen/bar area
(which makes for three full kitchens total)
and hearth room, which mimics the layout
on the main level. This kitchen offers
additional bar seating, shimmery Cosmos
granite countertops, under-counter lighting, a
copper backsplash, double oven, induction
cook top, warming drawer, dishwasher, ice
maker, full wine and beer refrigerators, a
hidden keg beer tap, and, another pleasant
surprise, a flat-screen TV concealed behind a
mirror in the cabinets.

They also suggested that a circular stair is preferred, that
hallways should be minimized, and that they wouldn’t miss a
coat closet in the entry or a formal powder bath as long as one
was accessible on the main level. From all this information,
architect Scott Bickford drew up a plan that was versatile,
not formulaic.
In addition to these interior improvements, the team came up
with five different exterior elevations, from the Hamptons theme
to Old World, to please individual tastes.
Inside out, The Nantucket is a comprehensive manifestation of
people’s utmost desires for the most special of all places. “This
home is about livability and comfort. It’s for the person who
walks through the front door and says, ‘I’m home,’” James says.
Rick Forner and James LaVoy wanted to break out of the
status quo with their 6,250-square-foot floor plan. The
business partners hosted a focus group of prospective
clients and homeowners to determine what exactly people
want in a home. Through a series of questions, they got their
answers: open spaces including a combined living and hearth
room, a functional back hall, secluded master suite, lower-level
entertaining and outdoor living.
The dining room remained in the plan even though everyone
admitted they would use it only for holidays or entertaining.
“They told us that that place was a traditional part of life they
wanted to continue,” James says.
DESIGNED WITH COMFORT AND COLOR IN MIND,THIS HOME WHISKS YOU OFF TO ANOTHER PLACE.
NANTUCKETTHEB Y A N D R E A D A R R
A Hamptons-style home is about simplicity — no
froufrou allowed. But that’s not to say it can’t be
gorgeous. The kitchen is a perfect example, dressed
in crisp white cabinets with punches of cheery paint
colors on the island and end cabinet. Its practical
size still contains more than the usual number of
luxury brands, with space for an overflow of goods
in the nearby pantry, where an extra fridge and
adjustable shelves await. Details like a subtle glass
listello in the backsplash, apron-front sink and
display plate rack add up big time. What’s even
bigger, though, is the 10-foot by 5-foot knotty alder
island with a reclaimed chestnut top and room for
two low barstools on one side. “It’s so much more
comfortable if the island’s not raised,” designer
Gail Golden says.

Most of the trim is plain and the baseboards
deep in this casual, coastal home, but the
wainscoting is meant to stand out. The
breakfast room’s vertical stripes took hours
of careful strokes to create this fabulous
effect. Also take note of the visual pop
between the stained doors and windows and
the white outer trim that makes them recede.
POP GOES THE EASEL
In a serendipitous moment, Gail walked into the dining room during
construction and saw the potential of a half-framed barrel ceiling.
Instead of finishing it with drywall, she and Rick decided to turn it
into a delightful detail reminiscent of a ship’s hull. “I knew this
house wasn’t going to be very formal. If it was, this wouldn’t have
worked,” Rick notes. Fortunately, it does — and very well.

Warm wood cabinets are offset by a sparkling sea-
colored recycled glass countertop, cobalt glass tile
“wave” flourish in the floor and accent coastal tiles
in the backsplash. Functional for more than storage,
this transitional space houses a beverage fridge,
wine fridge and bar sink with push-button disposal. In
the background, you may notice the contemporary
graphic pattern in the back hallway, and no, it’s not
wallpaper. Faux painter Twyla Olson-Hahn perked up
the “friend’s entrance” using colors selected from the
house with metallic gold and silver undertones.
NOT JUST FOR THE BUTLER
Mudrooms are the must-have space in new
homes today, but this one leaps from
utilitarian to fun-ctional. Birch and maple
cabinets make a contrasting statement next
to a colorful ceramic tile backsplash and
Spearmint-colored walls. The black-stained
birch helps transition to the laundry room’s
black-and-white checkered floor and black
granite countertops. Watered-down paint on
the random-planked wainscoting allows the
wood grain to show through five alternating
coastal colors.

future homeowners will be able to eat, watch TV and relax by the fire

OUTSIDE ANYTIME
A single great room — not a separate formal living room and hearth room — is the main gathering space
in the home. Its soaring height and ship lap siding is capped with two silver chandeliers and a simple yet
elegant fireplace. The TV is craftily blended into the background behind cabinets so that the main focus is
the conversation area punctuated by facing sofas and oversized chairs surrounding a deep shag rug.

INTENSE STUDY
Stepping away from the public space and the
coastal palette, the master suite transitions into a
more contemporary retreat in luscious mocha,
with glamorous crystal and silver accents. The
room is comfortably sized and adorned, featuring
tailored Roman shades and a built-in chest.

punches of stainless brushed “pennies” behind the tub, coffee bar and
makeup vanity.
