Preface

Welcome to KanjiPlusPlus.com

This site is dedicated to the step-wise, or better said stroke-wise, learning

of the Japanese writing system. The concept of Kanji++ is to start with

simple characters and increase the complexity level gradually.

Let's start with a simple example. Please take a sheet of paper and a pen

and try to draw these two strokes:

くつCongratulations, you just wrote your first word (kutsu = shoe) in

Japanese, that Japanese people could directly read.

Of course these are only just two simple characters from the syllable

alphabet Hiragana, which consists of 46 characters. Besides Hiragana,

their is the second syllable alphabet Katakana that consists as well of 46

characters. The both alphabets with 92 characters in total are easy to

learn, because they are sorted in a fixed order and their characters are

written by a maximum of four strokes. Japanese children must be familiar

with these characters in the first grade.

A challenge are the 2,136 kanji, that are the characters based on

Chinese characters, that are defined by the japanese government. But

don't worry. This site was made, to make that learning as easy as

possible.

Let's have a look at another example. Please take again your pen and try

to draw these two strokes (you already know one of them):

⼀つCongratulation, you just wrote your second word (hitotsu = one) in

Japanese and wrote your first kanji.

And now have fun with Kanji++.
