The journey starts hereWELCOME TO

KTW’s annual spring Road to Adventure guide.

As we drive into spring, it’s time to pack up the car and hit the road.

It was a long winter and, as the final snow melts, you are no doubt itching to get out and expe-rience all of what B.C.’s Interior has to offer.

We want to make sure you’re

prepared before you enjoy the warmer days ahead.

In the pages to come, you will find helpful tips to prepare you before arriving at your destina-tion.

Is your car ready for a road trip? On page C5, we’ll tell you what to get checked before you leave and, on page C15, how to make sure your tires can with-stand the kilometres you’ll put on them.

Have you ever thought about what you would do if you were travelling and got into an acci-dent? We’ve got you covered on page C13.

Tips for crossing the border can be found on page C10 and things to consider when bringing along the family pet are on page C6.

No matter the destination, it’s all about the journey, so take a read, prepare yourself and enjoy the ride.

INTRODUCING THE NEW 2014 CLA.

You’ve got your tunes, you’ve packed snacks and you’ve programmed the GPS.

You might be road-trip ready but, after battling the win-ter weather, is your vehicle?

During the warmer months, we tend to spend more time in our cars. According to Statistics Canada, drivers average 86.7 billion kilometres between July and September, the busiest quarter of the year.

So, it’s not difficult to see that getting your car ready for these summer conditions is crucial for accident prevention and optimal fuel economy.

“Most of us take steps to prepare our cars for winter, but doing the same for summer driving is just as critical,” said Mauro Convertini, an insurance expert from Aviva Canada.

“Before embarking on a road-trip, drivers should take a few moments to make sure their car is ready to roam the summer streets.”

Convertini recommended the following:• Check your tires: Use all-season tires and maintain

your tire pressure, as both will improve your vehicle’s fuel economy in warmer weather.

• Get rain ready: Replace your windshield wipers, which may be cracked or torn from ice, snow, salt and extreme temperatures.

• Check air conditioning: There’s nothing worse than losing your air conditioning on a hot sunny day. You could have an issue if it can’t produce or preserve temperatures that are 10 C below the outside air.

• Cool your car: Sitting in traffic on a hot day is tough on your car’s cooling system. Ask your mechanic to check your coolant levels at the start of the season.

• Fight salt damage: Replacing a salt-clogged air filter gets you more kilometres per litre.

With these tips in mind, you will be ready for your next road adventure. More information is available from your insurance broker or online at avivacanada.com.

Changing vehicle oil on a regular basis is an important task which offers a number of benefits to vehicle owners.

Oil plays an important role in providing lubrication in the engine.

Apart from lubricating engine parts, the oil also performs other important roles like cleaning of engine, reducing pollutants, stopping the formation of sludge and cool-ing the vehicle.

But, if it is not changed on a regular basis, it can result in engine failure and wear and tear, thus causing huge loss in terms of vehicle performance.

Some of the major benefits offered by oil change include improved gas mileage, improved engine-stability and life, increased performance etc.

All the benefits have been discussed below in detail.

Improvement in gas mileage This is one of the major benefits offered

by routine oil change. If the engine oil is not changed from a long time, it becomes less viscous and starts losing its ability to lubri-cate and protect elements of engine.

As a result, friction occurs between mov-ing parts of the engine thus causing wear and tear.

The more the friction, the more the engine needs to work in order to overcome that friction. On the other hand, new oil is extremely viscous, smooth and allows engine to move smoothly with smallest fric-tion.

Improves engine stability and life This is another important benefit offered

by regular oil change to vehicle owners. It improves the life of the engine, thus

making it functional for years to come. Oil change on a regular basis keeps

engine clean. A clean engine shows less signs of ageing and offers an excellent per-formance for a longer time period.

Increased performance We all know performance of a vehicle

depends on the condition of the engine. If it is good, performance increases.

Stops noise produced by vehicle Regular changes of engine oil also pre-

vent the parts of an engine from coming into contact with each other.

This helps in reducing the noise made by the vehicle. Moreover, it also reduces the temperature of the engine.

Thus, it becomes clear regular oil change offers a number of advantages to vehicle owners.

Getting oil change performed by an auto-service centre is a good decision.

There are many auto service centres offering such services to vehicle owners.

One needs to research in order to find a reliable service center which uses quality products and motor oil.

Individuals can take help from the Internet.

Keep your vehicle tuned up

As many as nine in 10 Canadians say they intend to travel in the next 24 months, so there will likely be a lot of families pack-ing up and hitting the road soon.

Many folks feel that their pets are an important part of the family so those needs are also considered when making travel arrangements.

Here are a few tips to ensure your pet-inclusive vacation is a success for everyone:

Plan ahead Map out your stops and call ahead to

ensure that your lodging, whether it’s a hotel or a campground, is animal friendly.

“Rest breaks are very important when traveling with pets,” explains Dr. Colleen Skavinsky, the chief veterinary officer for Petsecure, a pet insurance provider.

“Stop every few hours for quick dog walks or kitty litter use, and offer water fre-quently to all pets.”

Ease your pet into traveling Give the little one a chance to get com-

fortable in a carrier, crate, or animal seatbelt before your trip to reduce crying or discom-fort when it comes time for a long journey.

If motion sickness or anxiety is an issue, consult your veterinarian for recommenda-tions about your pet’s particular condition.

If you’re traveling to the United States and plan to bring along Fido, you will need to provide a current rabies vaccination cer-tificate when you cross the border.

Schedule an appointment with your vet prior to the trip to confirm that your pet has

all required boosters. The doctor may advise additional preven-

tive measures to protect your pet against any diseases commonly encountered at your travel destination.

Identify your pet This should be done in multiple ways-

through collar and tag, tattoo, and microchip in the unfortunate event that they get lost.

Microchip databases are international and make tracking down your lost animal easier across provinces and borders.

Animal insurance providers like Petsecure offer medical coverage, which protects your furry friend against accidents and illness across Canada and the continental U.S.A.

This provider also offers holiday cancella-tion insurance should your pet become seri-ously ill while you are on vacation.

Check out the Petsecure Vet Locator app to help you to track down a nearby veterinar-ian when you’re on the go.

While it is difficult for many of us to imagine time away from our furry family members, no pet owner wants to subject them to discomfort and anxiety that could be dangerous to their health.

“Travel may not be the best option for senior cats and dogs or those animals with significant medical conditions,” says Dr. Skavinsky.

“Your veterinarian can help you with the decision and suggest alternative arrange-ments if you choose to keep your pet at home.”

Every spring, Canadians take to the road in great numbers, exploring their own provinces, setting out across the country, or heading south of the border.

As road-trip season quickly approach-es, this is the perfect time to revisit your insurance policy to make sure you have all the coverage you will need. The fol-lowing tips will prepare you for your journey:

Understand your vehicle insuranceWhile all Canadian drivers are

required to have automobile insurance, just what that entails is not always clear.

Many of us have a basic understand-ing, yet according to a study from Western Financial Group, only 22 per cent are extremely confident they know what they are covered for.

“Before turning the key, ask your provider if you’re covered for bodily injury, accident benefits, and emergency road service,” said Shirley Parchoma, a regional director with Western Financial Group.

“It is imperative that you understand your policy in order to be protected, especially when traveling outside of your province or country.”

Get medical insurance when driving in the United States

Many Canadians don’t do this. Even the shortest road trip to the states, such as

day spent cross-border shopping, comes with risks.

Given the potential for exorbitant medical costs should an emergency arise, it is essential that you are covered.

Consider year-round travel coverage“People tend to assume that year-

round travel coverage is expensive, yet never bother to truly evaluate their options,” said Parchoma.

“Annual policies are very affordable and ideally suited to almost everyone that travels across the border, even occasion-ally.”

Pack appropriate documentation and contact information

You have the correct vehicle and travel coverage, you planned your route, and you packed your bags, so what else do you need to do?

One more thing: Gather all your documentation, from up-to-date pre-scriptions and contact information for your insurance broker to identification for everyone in your party, including children.

That way, should the need arise, you will have the correct resources do deal with any eventuality.

Now that you have the right protec-tion, you can focus on the things that really matter, like pretty views, quirky attractions, and convenient rest stops.

Being in a car accident can be overwhelming and confusing, but knowing what to do can help alleviate some of the stress.

“Being in a car accident is an unnerving expe-rience so it’s easy to lose focus in the moments afterward,” said Tim Bzowey, vice-president of home and auto at RBC Insurance.

“However, if prepared, drivers can avoid mak-ing harmful and expensive decisions immediately following a collision.”

Here are a few things to keep in mind if you’re ever in a car accident.

Do:• Stay calm, keep yourself and others safe, if

you can’t get out of your car turn on your hazard lights, if anyone is injured call 911.

• Call your insurance company right away, let a trained insurance professional handle all the details for you.

• Exchange information with the other drivers involved, such as their names, addresses, phone numbers, licence information, insurance com-pany and policy number.

• Obtain the contact information of any wit-nesses at the scene.

• Take photographs of the accident, such as car damage and road conditions.

Don’t:• Move anyone who is injured. You should

wait for medical help to arrive.• Leave the scene of the accident.• Accept a direct offer of payment of damage

from the other driver. Settling for direct payment may not be as advantageous as it seems. If you’re not at fault, the accident won’t affect your driv-ing record nor will you have to pay a deductible.

• Sign any documents other than the police report.

• Authorize repairs immediately. Your insur-ance adjuster may refer you to a repair facility where the repair comes with a guarantee.

The BCAA Road Safety Foundation has designated June as Child Passenger Safety Month, a time to pro-mote the importance of using the right child car or booster seat for the children you drive.

The foundation is reminding parents and caregivers that, in B.C., all drivers are responsible for transport-ing all children in age- and weight-appropriate child car seats or booster seats until the child’s ninth birthday.

It doesn’t matter if the trip is a short one to the store or a road trip to see the grandparents.

Transport Canada recently announced new child-restraint system and booster-seat requirements.

The new regulations use the most up-to-date technol-ogy available for Canadian testing requirements and ensure an appropriate minimum level of safety for chil-dren.

Car crashes are one of the leading causes of acciden-tal death among children in this province.

According to the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC), an average of 90 people are killed each year as a result of not being properly restrained in a vehicle. Approximately eight of those are under the age of 12.

Using a child car seat or booster seat can significant-ly reduce the risk of injury and death.

The child-passenger safety section of the BCAA Road Safety Foundation’s website has valuable informa-tion for parents including a buying guide for car seats, details about car seat use and a calendar of new parent workshops and one-to-one Instructional Clinics.

The BCAA RSF/ICBC Child Passenger Safety Program educates parents and caregivers about the importance of child passenger safety on their childseat-info.ca web page, through its toll-free information line 1-877-247-5551, and by supporting workshops through-out the province.

Be tire smart by making sure your tires have suf-ficient tread depth and are properly inflated

With the summer driv-ing season nearly upon us, Canada’s tire makers want drivers to get into the groove with their tires by measuring tread depth.

Why is tread depth important? When even a moderate summer thunder storm strikes, the traction and stopping capabilities of tires nearing the end of their service life can be substan-tially reduced, particularly at highway speeds.

Sufficient tread depth is what allows tires to grip rain covered roads and provide the traction required for con-trol and braking capability.

As every driver who has ever had to make a panic stop on a rain-slicked high-way knows, the ability to stop quickly can spell the difference between a stress-ful driving experience and a serious collision.

Longer stopping distances, hydroplaning

When the tread becomes too worn and the tread

grooves become too shallow, a tire’s ability to efficiently evacuate water is consider-ably reduced. This can lead to hydroplaning where the tire loses contact with the road’s surface and floats on top of the water, result-ing in a loss of tire grip or traction. When this occurs, the distance needed to stop in a panic braking situa-tion increases significantly. Hydroplaning, which is extremely dangerous, can also result in a complete loss of control.

A recent U.S. tire study demonstrates how dramati-caly stopping distances can increase on wet roadways depending on tire wear. The study measured panic stopping distances at high-way speeds on wet asphalt (equivilant to a moderate rain shower), comparing new tires with partially and fully worn tires.

Not surprisingly, the shortest stopping distance was on new tires with 10/32nds of an inch (8mm) of tread depth. In the dem-onstration, tires three quar-ters worn to a tread depth of 4/32nds of an inch (3.2mm)

increased the stopping dis-tance, taking a further seven car lengths to stop.

On fully worn tires with tread depth at the legal limit of 2/32nds of an inch(1.6mm), the stopping distance was lengthened by yet another seven car lengths.

This study shows that, over the first three quarters of tire tread life, the stop-ping distance can increase by seven car lengths.

It also illustrates how stopping distance can lengthen further over the last one quarter of tread life (from 4/32nds (3.2mm) to 2/32nds (1.6mm) of an inch) by another seven car lengths.

Proper tire infl ationProper tire inflation is

a safe driving essential in all driving conditions. Tire under-inflation increases stopping distance and ham-pers performance by lessen-ing vehicle stability, particu-larly when cornering.

Tire makers strongly recommend that drivers measure their tire pressures monthly to ensure they are always inflated to the vehicle manufacturer’s rec-ommendation.

”Taking five minutes each month to measure and, if necessary, adjust your tire pressures safeguards opti-mal tire performance,” said Glenn Maidment, president

of the rubber association of Canada.. “Beyond being the leading cause of tire failure and premature wear, under-inflation also wastes fuel and harms the environment.”

An under-inflated tire wastes fuel because it does not roll as easily as it was intended.

The increased rolling resistance, which worsens with the degree of under-in-flation, requires the vehicle’s motor to burn more fuel to push the vehicle down the road.

According to the RAC, a motorist who drives 20,000 kilometres per year can save as much as $100 in fuel sim-ply be ensuring their tires are inflated to the

right pressure. For drivers who log many

more kilometres over the course of a year the saving can be considerably higher.

The pricetag for ignor-ing tire inflation is high. Canadian drivers rolling on under-inflated tires are expected to waste more than 500 million litres of fuel in 2013.

That is enough fuel to power 250,000 vehicles for a full year.

According to RAC research, one third of Canada’s 21 million vehicles have at least one under-inflated tire and only 30 per cent of drivers measure their tire pressures monthly.

Are your tires ready?

Even when enjoyed as an occasional sport, this activity cannot be improvised and requires good preparation.

Before Setting OutTake time before your trip to learn about the risks of navigating the waters and what is

important to ensure your safety. Be aware that you and the person who rented your kayak to you, if that is the case, must

comply with Transport Canada’s boating safety regulations.Check the weather forecast before you leave. Wear an approved personal flotation device or life-jacket fitted to your size. You may want to have spare clothing in a watertight bag. Finally, bring drinking water,

snacks and sunscreen.

Guided ExcursionsTaking part in a guided tour is a great way to learn the basics of sea kayaking through

qualified instructors. We recommend that you do some homework about the qualifications of the guide before

choosing who will accompany you. Before each guided trip, also make sure to have an emergency plan in place and ensure

that it is clearly explained by the group leader. Don’t hesitate to ask questions on the use of mandatory equipment, the waterway’s dif-

ficulty level and safety and navigation rules. When the water temperature is lower than 15 C, special measures must be put in place

such as an adapted emergency plan and appropriate equipment to ensure all participants are protected from hypothermia and cold-water shock in case of immersion, capsizing or fall-ing overboard.

Maritime Traffi cA sea kayak can be difficult to spot given its small size. Choose bright colours for your lifejacket such as red, yellow or orange, and stay in a

group so other boat operators can see you, particularly those at the helm of large vessels. These different measures will enable you to prepare for a safer outing and fully enjoy

the sport.

Life-jackets have been saving lives for hundreds of years, with the first recorded history of use by Norwegian seamen, who used simple blocks of wood.

The messages the Canadian Safe Boating Council has been delivering for years — “Boat Safe, Boat Smart — Wear it” and “It’s Your Life . . . Preserve it” — are certainly relevant for most other times we are aboard especially in smaller open boats.

The question is, why do we continue to ignore those messages, putting ourselves, our loved ones and friends at risk?

Interestingly, CSBC and Smart Risk’s research demonstrates that most of us insist that our children wear their PFDs.

However the willingness to wear a PFD drops from 85 per cent for children under five, to a low of 37 per cent by the time they reach their teen years and continues to decline significantly after the teen years.

So, what’s the result of all this complacency and unwillingness to wear a PFD?

Across Canada, 80 per cent of recreational boaters who drown each and every year were not wearing a life-jacket or personal floatation device (PFD). Most of these drownings occur in small open power boats, accounting for 60 per cent of these preventable deaths.

Most drownings happen unexpectedly when small boats capsize or someone falls overboard. The PFD that you leave behind is not much use, especially in cold water.

There are also parts of this country where water temperatures remain cold all year around. Hypothermia is a condition most boaters have heard about, and can lead to many problems such as disorientation and rapid incapacitation, but the real shocker is found in the new research on sudden cold water immersion.

With all that information, the message should be clear. Having your life-jacket on before you end up in the water will greatly increase your chance of survival. So, why don’t we? Some of the common reasons for not wearing a life-jacket are: “they’re uncomfortable;” and “they look stupid.” Well those reasons just don’t fly anymore.

Things have changed and there is a new gen-eration of life-jackets in town. Whether they are specialized life-jackets for specific on water activi-ties or the new inflatable life-jackets, they are much more comfortable than the old standard ones and certainly put those old objections to rest.

There are many new, improved (and approved by Transport Canada) life-jackets and all are all designed to be lightweight and comfortable. There is a wide range of styles and colours and all are designed for the type of boating you do and condi-tions you face.

Whether it be paddling, sailing, fishing, water sports or riding personal water craft, there is a life-jacket suited for it.

The new face on the waterfront are the inflata-bles; the most comfortable, lightweight life-jackets you can buy and are available in vest or pouch styles.

Inflatable jackets come standard with manual inflation, but a few models are available with auto-matic inflation, which instantly inflates the life-jacket when you hit the water.

To meet Canadian small-vessel regulations, inflatable life-jackets must be worn at all times when aboard and underway and may not be worn by a person under the age of 16, or weighing less than 36.3 kilograms.

When choosing a life-jacket follow these simple guidelines: Choose one suitable for the activity you are involved in and check the label to make sure that it is Canadian approved and is of the correct size. Finally, make sure it fits snugly.

If you don’t wear it, it won’t work.

Before starting a new ATV season, it’s impor-tant to check some components of your quad.

In fact, it has been proved regular mainte-nance increases the reliability and durability of the mechanics. This is something to take into consideration when we know very well we could end up in the middle of nowhere while driving a quad.

Taking into account the stress we put on the mechanics when driving in rough terrain, the engine systems of an ATV are put to the test much more than that of a car or a truck.

Quad manufacturers recommend special oil for all the different ATV models. These oils con-tain specific additives depending on the make of the quad, engine (two- or four-stroke, carburetor or fuel injection, one cylinder or two), transmis-sion (automatic or manual), etc.

Likewise, the oil has to be appropriate to the time of year as the heat and the cold affects its viscosity.

For all these reasons, you should never use oil intended for cars or trucks.

And, if necessary, don’t forget to change the oil filter because it will protect your engine from contaminants when the oil is dirty.

It has been proved regular maintenance of an ATV increases the reliability and durability of the mechanics.

If your engine is having problems getting enough air, it can result in poor performance.

To improve efficiency and durability of the engine, the cleaning or replacement of the air filter must be done on a regular basis.

Quadding a cinch when using a winch

A winch is a very important piece of equipment for ATV fans. Equipped with a winch, your quad will be able to climb the steepest of hills

or get you out of the tightest corners.Over the last few years, winch technology has taken some giant steps for-

ward. They are now more durable, lighter and, more importantly, much simpler to operate than before.

The major innovation is the use of a synthetic cable. Suppler than steel cables, the synthetic cable can be guided in any direction or angle without run-ning the risk of it jamming in the winch roller during towing.

Likewise, it is easier to clean and there’s no risk of getting splinters from frayed cables.

For safe use, it’s recommended to choose a winch with a minimum capacity of 680 kilograms.

Designed for ATVs in the sports segment, this type of winch has the advantage of being compact and light so as to not unbalance the quad during extreme manoeuvres.

For utility ATVs, the minimum winching capacity should be 1,135 kilo-grams.

If the ATV weighs more than 295 kilograms, the capacity of the winch should be at least 1,360 kilograms.

Among other useful features, it’s best to opt for a model equipped with a brake system that activates immediately once the pulling stops.

What’s more, wireless remote controls are now available that allow the use of the winch from a distance and which facilitates its use and improves safety.

Ahh, boating — skim-ming over the water with the wind in your hair.

What a great way to spend a summer afternoon, especially with family and friends.

A carefree atmosphere like this is just made to have fun and party.

However, this partying should never include drink-ing alcohol. Mixing alcohol and boating can have tragic consequences.

Federal statutes dictate that whether or not your craft is motorized, you can be charged with impaired operation of a vessel under the Criminal Code of Canada if your blood alco-hol level exceeds the .08 threshold.

That means you can be charged even if you are impaired while operating a canoe.

A judge can, upon con-viction, suspend your boat-ing privileges — but it can get worse.

In Ontario, Bill 209 amended the Highway Traffic Act to also apply to “anyone operating or hav-ing the care or control of a vessel.”

As such, anyone found

boating with a blood alco-hol level above .05 faces an on-the-spot drivers’ license suspension.

That’s right — you can lose your automobile driver’s licence and, should your blood alcohol concen-tration exceed .08, upon conviction, an additional suspension of up to one year can be applied.

If that’s not a sufficient deterrent, add the financial impact of court and legal fees, alternative transporta-tion for the year and poten-tial loss of employment if driving is an essential com-ponent of your job.

You’ll face drastically increased insurance pre-miums for up to six years and the inconvenience and embarrassment related to the installation and use of an ignition interlock system.

The decision to drink and boat seems outrageous when stacked up against the penalties.

But, many impaired boaters aren’t stopped before something even worse happens.

The Canadian Safe Boating Council completed a survey that identified nearly 40 per cent of boat-

ing related deaths alcohol was a factor and 23 per cent of the cases involved alco-hol above the legal limit.

What increased the effects of alcohol in a boat are sunshine and a boat’s natural rocking motion that can turn a simple ride into a dangerous dunking.

It only takes a large wake or wave, a change in the boat’s direction, or a tippy canoe to result in someone falling overboard with tragic consequences.

Navigating a boat takes co-ordination and your full concentration. Your decision-making skills and ability to react suddenly to changes in condition and surroundings is compro-mised by alcohol.

Your reaction time slows, your vision and judgement are affected and you are more willing to be reckless and take risks.

All of this can result in a preventable accident in which you or someone you care for ends up in hospital or worse.

Afterward, you can have a few drinks on shore and stay put.

It’s that simple — if you drink, don’t drive your boat.

Alcohol and boating can be deadly

Certain skills have to be mastered in order to drive a motorcycle.

The pleasure of driving on two wheels must be combined with flawless safety practices. After all, the smallest of errors can be fatal.

Before getting on their bikes, motorcyclists must, first of all, pay careful attention to their clothing.

Why? Their clothing is the only form of protection they have.

Remember scraping a knee on asphalt as a child when riding a bike or a scooter? Just imagine the result of a fall or a crash at 100 kilometres per hour.

Wearing a jacket made of leather or an anti-abrasive material is not a luxury, it’s a neces-sity, whatever the weather.

Gloves and boots are other indispensable items in a motorcyclist’s wardrobe. As far as helmets are concerned, full-face models offer the best protection.

Short trips are advisable for the first few outings in order to get the feel of the motor-cycle.

The techniques for maintaining balance at slow speeds, negotiating bends and corners, braking at intersections and avoiding obstacles must be mastered perfectly — all while keep-ing to the speed limits, of course.

Sharing the road with other users is another important element that will only succeed if everyone behaves in a safe and courteous man-ner.

Being aware of the risks attached to driving a motorcycle and being capable of managing them is to demonstrate an exemplary, proactive attitude, one that will never detract from your pleasure and sense of freedom.

Those who live in the Tournament Capital already know the weather is one of the many fringe benefits that come with calling Kamloops home. And, the favourable climate has not gone unnoticed by the folks at Environment Canada, which has drawn up what it calls Weather Winners.

Using 30 years of weather data for Canada’s 100 largest cities with populations of 15,000 or more, the government agency has crunched the numbers, resulting in a plethora of facts that will provide further fodder for inter-city rivalries.

For example, Kamloops is king of the sum-mers, laying claim to having the hottest summer in the entire country with an average tempera-ture of 26.94 C.

Kamloops is also the second-driest city in Canada — only 279 millimetres of precipitation, behind Whitehorse — while the Kelowna is much soggier, sitting in ninth position.

The peculiarities of Canadian weather are evident throughout the data: Only a two-hour drive separates Canada’s second-driest city (Kamloops) and the country’s third-wettest burgh (Chilliwack).

How about that weather?

An eye for detail can make all the difference to how many catches you land during a fishing trip.

Experienced anglers can land fish without much difficulty, even when fish are active and moving around.

However, the time of year or weather condi-tions can modify the behaviour of fish and influ-ence their feeding habits, making them more difficult to catch.

Fortunately, there are a few tricks available for making your rigs more subtle.

Here are a few suggestions for improving the way your lure is presented under difficult condi-tions.

Above all, always use small-diameter fishing line — fused or otherwise — because it is much more sensitive.

Opt for small hooks, even when you’re fish-ing for large fish. They are usually just as robust as the big ones, but they are much more discreet.

One of the most important things to remem-ber is to not use a steel leader or a ball-bearing swivel when attempting to stimulate fish.

Even though there are plenty of useful tips out there for speeding up lure changes and pro-tecting the lure from the fish’s sharp teeth during an attack, they are of little use for stimulating attacks on the bait.

In some cases, these accessories can even compromise the action of the bait in the water.

If necessary, you can always use a length of high-calibre braided line as a leader line. It is a great alternative to a steel leader.

A few knots are necessary in order to fix it firmly and to integrate it into your rig. This way of doing things is economical and gives good results, even in the worst of conditions.

Warm weather brings with it the urge for fresh air, exercise and new things.

And, for many people, discovering new places means getting out into nature.

For these outdoor enthusiasts, national parks are the perfect destination.

ActivitiesOur national parks are protected areas of

land, filled with animal and plant life. The use of these lands is controlled by

the government so that development proj-ects don’t impinge on the na ture reserves.

These parks are meant to give people access to recreation and nature education.

There is usually a wide range of sea-sonal outdoor activities available, including camping, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, raft-ing, swimming, underwater exploration, climbing, cycling, horse riding, fishing and special exhibits.

Some parks even have restaurant and spa facilities on site.

ReservationsIn national parks, camping is often the

starting point for many other activities.

The first step is to plan for lodgings — in a tent, or perhaps in a cabin belonging to the park.

Day trips are also possible, with the opportunity to book canoes, kayaks, or guided excursions.

Find out as quickly as possible about all the reservations that you will need to make for accommodations, equipment and guides — the summer books up fast.

Safety and regulationsContact the park to find out about cur-

rent regulations and safety rules — such as what to do if you encounter a bear, for example!

In addition, some products — such as fire starters — may be banned in order to protect the flora and fauna.

It’s better to find out before you leave home.

But, above all, be ready to learn and to have fun.

The wildlife within the national parks will awaken your explorer’s instincts.

What a great way to renew your ties with nature and learn to take care of the natural environment.

Lake cabins and mountain chalets, perfect for summer getawaysThinking about a romantic vaca-

tion for two? Or taking some time to get away

with the fa mily? Want to plan a reunion with some old friends?

You’re going to have to get busy and organize things pretty soon if you want to get the best place available.

Once you’ve booked your summer vacation at a lake cabin or mountain chalet, you can relax and begin look-ing forward to your vacation.

If staying in hotels is your usual way to take a holiday, you will enjoy the combined luxury of a cabin.

It is way more relaxing than stay-ing with friends or camping — you can experience nature right outside your door, but you have all the ame-nities of a home away from home.

And, it is a great way to discover a part of the country that you’ve never looked at closely before.

To have a truly enjoyable break, choose a cabin where you are sure to have lots of fun.

Some cabins are really spacious, with room to sleep more than one family, while others are more inti-mate.

Some are very basic and rustic while others are more luxurious and provide all the comforts of home.

Where you choose to book a cabin will be determined by the kind of landscape you want to be surrounded by and the kinds of activities you enjoy most.

If you like hiking and nature walks, you could book a chalet in a mountain valley or near a winter-time ski resort.

If you like water sports and a lively nightlife, a cabin on a busy lakeshore will be the place for you.

If you want to do some antiqu-ing and visit country markets, then a country house is your best bet.

Be sure to find out what’s includ-ed in the price of the rental — air-conditioning, telephone, Internet, satellite television, bed sheets, bath towels and kitchen towels are good to check off the list. Sometimes you may even have access to a boat or an ATV.
