Hau`oli Makahiki Hou!
Akemashite Omedetoo Gozaimasu! Feliz
Ano Nuevo! Happy New Year!
The start of a new year brings so much
enthusiasm as it offers all of us an
opportunity for a fresh start or a new
beginning. The air is filled with
optimism as we look to achieve new
goals and reset our targets on the ones
that somehow got away.
At Kamilo`iki Elementary, our goal
remains the same as we strive to develop
caring and knowledgeable young people
who create positive change. We will
continue to explore and provide new
learning opportunities for our students to
discover the world around them and take
action to serve their community. Our
school will also continue to discover new
ways to build and strengthen our
partnerships with our parents and our
community as we look to support all of
our students in their learning.
Finally, as your Principal, I will continue
to challenge our students to achieve the
same daily goals that I shared with them
on my first day.
1. Learn something new.
2. Take care of yourself and
those around you.
3. Have fun.
So as we embark on a new journey, may
I encourage you to take advantage of the
different opportunities to connect with
your child and our school community by
joining us at our various school events.
Stay connected by visiting our website
(www.kamiloikielementary. org) or by
following us on Twitter
(@KamiloikiCubs).
“Obstacles are those frightful
things you see when you take your
eyes off your goal.” - Henry Ford May you have an invigorating and
memorable year!!!

BOXTOPS/LABELS
Great news! We just received a check from
BoxTops for almost $800! Your little clips add up!
Keep sending them in.
Both Labels for Education and BoxTops are
reducing the number of products that have their
little cutouts, so please send in whatever you can
find. Kamiloiki buys ink/toner for school printers
with the money from BoxTops. Mahalo!

Library News By Robin G. Jones, Librarian

HAPPY 2017, WELCOME BACK!! I truly hope your holidays were full of joy, relaxation and lots of fun. It is time to get back to work, and work we must. As we begin our work for 2017, I would like to say a great, big MAHALO to my subs Mrs. Oda and Ms. Purba for teaching and guiding our students during my absence. YOU GUYS ROCK!!
I also want to remind everyone, during the next few weeks, all students will physically check out one book from the library and up to 5 books from Overdrive, our online library. The password for Overdrive is the student’s 10-digit ID number. Theses numbers were sent home at the beginning of the school year with each
student. For new students, you may receive your 10-digit number from your Homeroom teacher. Please make use of our online library for research, reading logs or pleasure reading.
Over the next six weeks, the library will share space with our technology classes while Interims take place in the computer labs. We ask for everyone’s patience and flexibility as we move forward.
I will say the surgery went well, next stop -
physical therapy :(. Thank you so much for your
many prayers and well wishes. I hope to see you
in a few weeks. Until then, keep reading and
enjoying 2017!!

While windy conditions
forced our Family Movie
Night to move indoors, it
certainly didn’t ruin the
fun! The cafeteria was full of families that came
out to watch Finding Dory and enjoy delicious
food from Bonfire Pizza, Olay’s Thai Food, and
Kona Ice. Stay tuned as we schedule future
movie nights. It’s a fun evening and great way to
relax, meet other families, and grab an easy
dinner.
Next on the agenda is the annual
Cougar Cub Challenge. Our two major
fundraisers each year are Regal Bakery in
August, and Cougar Cub Challenge in
February. What is the Cougar Cub Challenge?
It’s a morning of fun and fitness in which the
whole school converges on C Field (by
Kamiloiki Park). Prior to the event, on
Thursday, February 2nd, your child will bring
home a packet and is encouraged to ask family
and friends to make a monetary donation to our
school. Then, on Friday February 24, 2017
from 8:30 to 11 a.m. the school will come
together to run or walk laps in celebration of
the funds raised.
Parents are welcome and encouraged to
volunteer the day of the event. Volunteer
opportunities include: setting up, manning
water stations, and distributing silly band
bracelets to kids as they complete each lap.
While this is not a competitive event, the kids
enjoy seeing how many bracelets they can
collect!
Please mark your calendar for our next
Friends of Kamiloiki meeting on February
15, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. in the library. Meetings
last no more than 1 hour and children are
welcome to come, too. Pizza and a movie are
provided to keep them busy while we meet.
Please come by, say hi, and lend a hand. We
could use your help!!!

The Primary Years Programme at Kamilo`iki an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School
Aloha Kamilo`iki!
Our school’s Science and Engineering Fair was held on Wednesday, January 11th. Fourth
and fifth grade students presented their projects to judges from the Department of Education
and local STEM professionals. Our students demonstrated curiosity, creativity, and
perseverance over the past few months and were enthusiastic to share their new knowledge
and reflections. We look forward to a field trip with all of our student scientists and engineers
to view secondary projects at the Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair.
Completing a Science and Engineering Fair project requires great commitment, and we truly
appreciate our Kamiloʻiki families and teachers, as well as Honolulu District staff, who
encouraged and mentored our students. We would like to congratulate all of our students
who participated in this journey!

IB Spotlight By Kyden S., grade 4
Being open-minded is being able to listen to other people’s thoughts and opinions. One example of me being open-minded was in 3rd grade when I had a project about adaptations. My group had to decide on a habitat. I suggested a desert biome, but my partner wanted an ocean habitat. I said, “Sure.” Our animal turned out great! So remember to be open-minded.

KAMILO`IKI I.C.T. CORNER
(Information, Communication and Technologies)
By Mrs. Terrie Kamo January 2017
Tools? Technology is looked at as a “bag of tools” allowing students and teachers to do amazing
things including gathering information and communicating. With information almost instantly at our
fingertips, we need to help our students be good consumers to know what will best help them reach
their goals. We need to help them build confidence, and at the same time allow them to be
curious and creative. Please partner with us and your child in making our world a better place in
2017 and beyond! Mahalo!!! ~Mrs. Kamo

Exciting News!!!
We just received our first order of 54 Chromebooks! This
will allow for one cart of 27 Chromebooks for each building.
Chromebooks, at under $200/ unit, are a much less
expensive way to get devices into the hands of our students.
They also allow for easy management of applications,
updates and tracking from a school Google Management
system. All work is done through students’ GAFE (Google
Apps For Education) accounts. When they log into their
account, they can access their work that was automatically
saved even if it’s on a different device. The apps go by
different names, but are very similar to the Word, Excel and
PowerPoint that many are used to. It will also be great for
teachers as they become more familiar with Google
Classroom!
