    (& MID-CENTURY MODERN FLARE)

    KALARI HAUS

YYou only have to spot the sunny yellow accents on this striking City Beach home to realise that this is no run-of-the-mill design. A contemporary home inspired by the Mid-Century Modern era, it’s a custom-built five-bedroom, three-bathroom residence that has captured hearts and minds with its warmth and personality. Sunshine penetrates every room, zoning is practical and flexible, storage is second to none, lines are clean and uncomplicated, and the views are to die for. This is a forever home for those who appreciate modern craftsmanship and a deft touch of nostalgia, while still keeping a firm eye on the future.

    THE KRIEGER’S vision

We wanted to build a light filled, bright and thermally efficient home that would provide flexibility through the years, age proofing it for our growing family. We were looking to maximise the use of space, without compromising on design and style.

    DREAM HOME SPECIFICATIONS

Ideally, we wanted a spacious 3 car garage with extra room around the cars. We wanted this space to be even more functional, to allow for smart storage areas, space for a workshop, a gym, our bikes and kayaks. We also wanted an external door with internal access from the home through a mudroom.

The entry we wanted to be informal yet defined. The front door needed to lead into the home, but not allow visitors to see through the home. By being able to close off the living areas from the entrance and the stairs to the upper floor of the home, we could create a noise barrier to the upstairs bedrooms, ensuring it be the sanctuary we were all looking for.

    Designed around The Krieger’s

    • Cold house

    • No mudroom

    • No connection between the inside and out

    • Garage is too small

    • No street appeal

    • Study area too separate

We wanted the living and family areas to feel like its own designated space, separate from the kitchen and dining areas. It needed to be located near the kitchen but not ‘in’ the kitchen. We also wanted the living and family areas to have easy access to the alfresco area, leading out to the pool and the outdoors. To top it all off, we wanted a shared gas fireplace between the living area and the kitchen.

We wanted a modern, mid-century styled home embracing clean lines and pods, combining textures with timber, stone, dark cladding and large sections of glass. We knew from the start that what we were creating was something truly unique. Certainly not your everyday home.

We wanted solar power to help us keep our home as energy efficient as possible, making the dream of ducted air-conditioning and underfloor heating possible. Design wise, we were after tall doors, high ceilings, shadow lines and no skirting throughout the home. We wanted a porch with room for chairs and the space to relax. We also wanted an outdoor shower, a pool, a grassed area and space for a veggie garden. Finally, we wanted a strong visible connection between the indoor and outdoor living areas.

For us, the block position was a huge influence in our home design. The designer said it was situated on “the side of a mountain” with a 5.5m slope across the site. We also needed to work within the existing levels and contours of the block, in keeping with the local council planning policy. The result was a three-level home, staggered into the block maintaining the ground level at the back of the home.
