Differences of Opinion The other day I was enrolling some students who had come to us from overseas. One of the parents asked if we had bullying in our school to which I answered “absolutely, unfortunately we do and any school that suggests otherwise would be telling porkies.” But as I have said, on previous occasions, we do somemes need to be careful about what we mean by bullying. In some cases it is actually just a difference of opinion. Differences are inevitable, normal and potenally beneficial. They are inevitable because relaonships bring together very different people, especially in schools. They’re normal, because all relaonships, including great ones, experience them. They’re potenally beneficial because, handled effecvely, relaonships grow through them. When conflicts arise, there are generally three styles of handling them. The avoid style. These are the ‘don’t rock the boat’ and ‘let sleeping dogs lie’ people. They dislike or fear confrontaons, so they tend to bury their feelings, not realising they’re buried alive and will soon rise again further down the road. Such differences go from clam-up, to build-up, to blow-up, inving physical and emoonal turmoil. Meanwhile, offences accumulate, unaddressed issues mulply, and unfinished business breaks down and erodes the relaonship. The aac style. These are the ‘get em, before they get you’ people; oſten ruthless fighters who refuse to give in, inflict terminal wounds on the relaonship. Aack leads to counteraack with both sides digging in and nothing being resolved. And then there is The aroach-arstyle. These are the ‘no price is too high for a good relaonship’ people. They are sensive to the feelings of others, yet insist on dealing directly with important issues. They avoid blaming, confront the issue, not the individual, and invite others to partner with them in solving the problem and retaining the relaonship. Which style is your style? Differences of OpinionThe other day I was enrolling some students who had come to us from overseas. One of the parents asked if we had bullying in our school to which I answered “absolutely, unfortunately we do and any school that suggests otherwise would be telling porkies.” But as I have said, on previous occasions,

we do sometimes need to be careful about what we mean by bullying. In some cases it is actually just a difference of opinion.Differences are inevitable, normal and potentially beneficial. They are inevitable because relationships bring together very different people, especially in schools. They’re normal, because all relationships, including great ones, experience them. They’re potentially beneficial because, handled effectively, relationships grow through them. When conflicts arise, there are generally three styles of handling them. The avoid style. These are the ‘don’t rock the boat’

and ‘let sleeping dogs lie’ people. They dislike or fear confrontations, so they tend to bury their feelings, not realising they’re buried alive and will soon rise again further down the road. Such differences go from clam-up, to build-up, to blow-up, inviting physical and emotional turmoil. Meanwhile, offences accumulate, unaddressed issues multiply, and unfinished business breaks down and erodes the relationship.

The attac style. These are the ‘get em, before they get you’ people; often ruthless fighters who refuse to give in, inflict terminal wounds on the relationship. Attack leads to counterattack with both sides digging in and nothing being resolved.

And then there is The aroach-ar style. These are the ‘no price

is too high for a good relationship’ people. They are sensitive to the feelings of others, yet insist on dealing directly with important issues. They avoid blaming, confront the issue, not the individual, and invite others to partner with them in solving the problem and retaining the relationship.

Early Notification System (Text Messaging)

Kaikorai Valley College is excited to announce that we are adopting new technology to make communication and information sharing with parents/caregivers easier and more streamlined. We are changing to a new notification system for student absences and emergency notifications and will be using a product called School-links. https://www.school-links.co.nz/features/.From next Monday, 13 August, parents/caregivers will receive a text message when a student has an unexplained absence. This replaces the current system of receiving a phone call. Parents/caregivers can then reply to the message via text. (The mobile phone company charges a small fee for the text reply, which is not included in your free text subscription. Please contact your carrier directly if you require more information.) Alternatively, parents and caregivers can either call the school directly on 453 6035 from their cellphone or a landline or email [email protected] and other important notifications will also be sent via text message. For example, if the school is closed due to adverse weather, a text message and email will be sent.

Hong Kong Sister School VisitFor ten days over weeks 1 and 2, KVC hosted 15 students from Ngan Po Ling College in Hong Kong. They were well looked after by our host families and peer support students at school. Thanks to all the fantastic and hospitable people involved in making it such a successful visit. We had no dramatic weather events this time, and everything went according to plan. The visiting students were really impressed with the mihi whakatau, the talented KVC students at the concert and the relationships the students have with their teachers. Of course they loved their excursions to different places around Dunedin and a number of them were reluctant to leave on Saturday. One of the HK teachers even asked about job vacancies at our school!

Aurora Energy Otago Science & Technology FairOn Monday 15 students went to display their research in the Aurora Energy Otago Science & Technology Fair. This year’s topics included research on bread mould, hand scrubs, ice cream, fatty foods, heart rates, tyre pressures, bananas and much more. We are now looking forward to hearing back from the judges. It was fantastic so see such an excited and enthusiastic group of students share their Science research with the judges. It was especially impressive that the students came ready with school uniform on a mufti day. A huge thanks goes out to all those who helped with the research for the students. The science fair boards will be on display and open to the public at Otago Museum, in the Hutton Theatre, until Sunday.

Career MovesNext week, the Liaison Advisors for Otago Polytechnic and the University of Otago will be at school to meet with students to help them enrol in the courses or degrees they are intending to study in 2019. This is a great opportunity to get some help with what can be a stressful process, if you are unsure of what to do. Year 12 and 13 students have all been emailed the dates and times for when the Advisors will be in school. Please encourage and check if your child has emailed Mrs Beagley, if they are intending to study at either of these providers next year, to arrange an appointment and also state which course or degree they are intending to study.Otago Polytechnic Course Planning - Emilie Crossley the Liaison Advisor from Otago Polytechnic will be at school on Monday 13 August from 1.00-3.00pm, to discuss your course options and how to enrol. Email or see Mrs Beagley to arrange an appointment. Otago University Course Planning - Greg Heller the Liaison Advisor from the Otago University will be at school on Thursday 16 August from 1.00-3.00pm to discuss your course options and how to enrol. BCITO Big Construction Tour - On Tuesday five of our students who are interested in building went on a tour of various industries to showcase the variety of Careers in the Construction Industry. After our health and safety briefing and the issuing of our High Vis vests, we headed off to Bunnings where the students built a barbecue kit using Ryobi power tools. The students represented KVC well in producing high-quality products with their level of craftsmanship. We then travelled by van to Wood Solutions Joinery where we had a tour of

the factory and saw the variety of work produced from high end kitchens to stairwells, doors and windows. Students had the opportunity of putting together kitchen units as well as seeing some impressive machinery in action that is used in the joinery industry. Bunnings sponsored a barbecue lunch before heading off to see what happens in the flooring industry and having a go at laying carpet. We finished the day with a tour of different building sites, seeing apprentices at work in a variety of stages of building. The feedback from students was positive and felt the day was well worthwhile to explore Careers that they hadn’t necessarily considered before.

Senior Assessment Week: Monday 27- Friday 31 AugustStudents in years 11, 12, and 13 have been emailed the assessment week timetable. A copy is in below. Please look over this with your son/daughter so you are aware of the times when he/she is expected at school during assessment week.

• Year 11, 12 and 13 students are only required at school when they have an assessment scheduled. Otherwise they are on study leave and expected to be at home studying.

• Year 11, 12 and 13 students must stay for the entire time of their assessment session. For some students this will mean a late finish in the afternoon.

• Year 11, 12 and 13 students may wear appropriate mufti for the week.Senior students should be revising for their practice exams and assessments. For students sitting practice external examinations, they will only get useful feedback from their exams if they have revised and given their best effort. Those students sitting internal assessments need to take the opportunity to achieve the maximum number of credits possible. A reminder the Year 7, 8, 9, and 10 students will continue with their school as normal during assessment week, with the exception of the Teacher Only Day on Monday 27 August.

Brathwaite Centre NewsStudent of the week: - Grace Moreton - For positive participation at Sport Otago.Last week the Auto Group students visited the Dunedin Community Gallery to view a model toy

exhibition. Everyone really enjoyed looking at some of the different types of transport on display, which we are currently studying. The old American classic cars looked very realistic and modern sports cars were much admired by our students! At Sport Otago this week students did a rotation of table tennis, basketball

and volleyball. It is very positive to see many of our students participate positively and independently with other school students from Dunedin. This week at Idea Services Drama, our students worked on acting and miming out classic fairy tale stories such as ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. The focus for the students was to project

the different heights of the main characters, which they did superbly well. For the non-Drama students their science focus was physics and they watched and experimented with a catapult. Then they made small catapults of their own.The Foods group have made noodle omelette and mouse traps this week.Production practices continue, including scenery construction and painting.

Year 7 and 8 Girls’ Rugby: Black FernsSome of our Year 7 and 8 Girls’ Rugby team went down to the University Oval to meet and have a chat with Black Ferns Sevens members Kelly Brazier, Alena Saili and Tenika Willison. Our Year 7 and 8 Girls’ Team has been playing every Sunday morning at 10am. We had two teams in the Taieri Sevens earlier on in the year, one of these teams took out 2nd place. These sportswomen spoke so well about opportunities and pathways that are now available in the women’s game. They were outstanding role models for our young girls. Well done to Unique Stevenson, who won a Black Ferns jersey. Next year we are aiming to have a Year 9 and 10 team in the Secondary School Girls’ Competition on Wednesday afternoons, with the aim of having a 1st XV in three years’ time.
