Event RulesHolding Teams Ahead of Projections - Accurate projections are critical to a successful K2M Relay. At any given spot along the race route we will have the course set-up and volunteers in place for 6-10 hours. Based on your projections we will start your team in a way that will keep you within this window. If a team runs substantially faster or slower it could mean that they will be ahead of, or behind, the set-up crew or sweeper crew.Penalitites – If your team gets too far ahead of projections we may be forced to hold your team at one of the major exchanges in order to bring your timing into conformity. If your team is held we will subtract the total time that you were held from your overall time. Getting Ahead of the Set Up Crew – We understand that it is impossible to perfectly project your team’s pace. We give teams a buffer zone before forcing them to stop at an exchange. If your team does get ahead of this buffer we will hold your team at one of the major exchange points. To avoid stopping your team again later in the race, we will determine the amount of time to be held by taking into account your current av-erage pace as well as the distance remaining in the race.Getting Behind the Sweeper Crew - If a team gets behind the projection and falls behind the Sweeper Crew we will usually allow the team to remain on the course and finish the race. In extreme situations we may require a team to advance runners forward in their support vehicle to remain in the serviced race.Relay Baton - At the start line, each team will be issued a baton in the form of a slap bracelet. The baton may be worn around the wrist, carried in hand, or in a pocket, and must be passed from runner to runner at the exchange chute. One baton will be given to each support vehicle. If members would like a free souvenir baton at the finish line they may ask race officials.Race Results - Race results will be posted to our website throughout the event, and can be viewed at: www.evoloevents.com/k2m-live. If you would like your location to be uploaded quicker text 0210 272 7498

with your most recent exchange point and the time you arrived there. Corrections or disputes may be addressed after the race by speaking with a Race Official. Night Running - Runners will be REQUIRED to have vests and lights on before they leave the exchange between the hours of 7:00 PM & 6:30 AM. Support Vehicles -Obey all traffic laws and posted speed limits. Allow plenty of travel time between exchanges so you are not tempted to speed or take unnecessary risks. Support vehicles are not allowed to impede traffic in any way. It is advised that you leapfrog your runner to cheer them on at various points and provide water & food, but only stop in areas where you can pull competely off the road. USE COMMON SENSE Leg RotationIf a runner is unable to finish a leg a teammate may finish the leg for him or her. The substituting teammate must start at the point that the exiting runner stopped. If a runner is unable to finish the race altogether, team-mates may complete that runner’s legs but are asked to inform Event Staff of the change. Runner ExchangesAll runner exchanges must occur at the chute of the exchange point. The incoming runner will transfer the baton (slap bracelet) to the next runner at the chute, who will then carry the baton to the next exchange. It is critical the arriving runners check in with the staff at the exchange to record the arrival time. If for some reason the exchange is unmanned, write in the exchange time in the red binder that will be leaning against the cone of the exchange chute. Emergency ContactsIn case of a life threatening emergency call 111 for local emergency services. Please report any injuries or accidents to Event Staff by calling 021 724 414

SafetyThis is an open road racing event, therefore many of the roads you will run on will not be closed. Safety is our top priority. There are many hazards in a race of this kind including, but not limited to: vehicle traffic, road and trail

conditions, visibility, and weather. It is your responsibility to take the necessary precautions to ensure your team’s safety. We are here to help make sure you have what you need. Below are some guidelines to help ensure your safety.

• Run against traffic.• Run on trails and sidewalks where available.• Be keenly aware of traffic and obey all traffic laws, including stopping at intersections.• Runners starting their legs between nighttime hours of 7:00pm and 6:30am are required to leave the transi-tion area wearing a reflective vest, headlamp (or carry-ing a torch), and a tail light. If you have any questions on where to obtain these items, please call or e-mail us at [email protected]• Pacers may be used during nighttime hours.• Pacers don’t have to be members of your team.• Pacers may accompany runners on foot or bicycle.• Pacers must wear the same nighttime safety gear as runners (reflective vest, headlight, tail light).• Use of personal music devices with headphones is acceptable, but discouraged – especially during night-time running when it is important to maintain aware-ness of your surroundings. Should you choose to use a personal music device, such as an iPod or MP3 player, you must adhere to the following rules: • Must be able to hear traffic • Must be able to communicate with support team and other runners • Must be able to hear and comply with instruc- tions from race officials• Vehicles must obey all normal traffic laws, including: • Speed limits • Not stopping on the roadway • No illegal turnabouts • No following runners to light the road for them• When parked, please turn off headlights to avoid blinding oncoming traffic• Due to the complexity of the course, some of the legs may be deemed Non-support legs. • Teams are not allowed to provide food or water to their runners during these legs.

• Evolo will provide aid stations at appropriate intervals during these legs.• If a runner presents a health or a safety concern, teams may assist their runner, or a runner from any other team, but must obey all traffic and pedestrian laws in doing so.• In order to maintain continuity and safety, the follow-ing items are not allowed on the course: • Rollerblades or roller skates • Unauthorized bicycles • Dogs, or other pets • Baby joggers, or strollers • Scooters • Skateboards • Alcohol• While participating in the race, the consumption of alcohol is not allowed at any point along the course. Alcohol may be consumed responsibly at the finish line where city ordinances allow. Alcohol not provided by event.• Sleeping/resting must be done inside the team vehicle or in designated sleeping areas. No one is allowed to sleep on the ground in any parking area.• Limited medical staff will be on hand at major ex-changes 6, 12, 18, 24, and 30. First aid personnel will be stationed throughout the course, but will only be equipped to handle minor sports injuries. In the event of an emergency call 111 and please notify the nearest race official.• Weather – the race will proceed regardless of weather, unless severe conditions threaten the safety of the event. Although we don’t anticipate such drastic condi-tions as to cancel the event, no refunds will be given if the race is cancelled due to weather, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, typhoons, or flooding, etc.• If lightning is present at the start of the race, the race director may delay the start until is has cleared. If lightning presents during the race, get your runner off the road & into the team vehicle & wait for it to clear. If it persists longer than 45 minutes, proceed ahead to the next exchange point.

Fun Fact #1: Papakura is a Māori word, aka KURA HARD! The name is believed to have originated from papa, meaning earth or flat (abbreviation of Papatuanuku) and kura meaning red, reflecting the rich, fertile soil upon which the community was founded.

A network of church-run boarding schools provided the main post-primary education option for Māori until the 1940s. The oldest of the church-run boarding schools started as mission schools, including St Stephen’s School, Auckland (Anglican, founded in 1844).

Fun factoid: Children laugh about 400 times a day, while adults laugh on average only 15 times a day. We expect this number to rise dramatically for your van over the next 2 days.

Pokeno -’a place of refuge’Pokeno was an important site during the New Zealand Wars of the 19th century, being the site of the Queen’s Redoubt, a major colonial military headquarters. The redoubt was an important southern fortifica-tion on the Great South Road, built by Governor George Edward Grey to transport troops for the Invasion of the Waikato. In the New Zealand film Goodbye Pork Pie, the fugitives steal fuel from the Pokeno service (gas) station, still operating under G.A.S.

Pukekawa- ‘hill of bitter memories’ Pukekawa is a small rural community located in the Lower Waikato area of Franklin District, New Zealand. It is about an hour’s drive south of Auckland. Pukekawa, an extinct volcano, is one of the oldest volcanic cones in the Auckland region. The area’s fertile soils are used to grow a range of vegetables, including onions, potatoes, and carrots. At the heart of Pukekawa is a primary school, church and a garage/service station.

Waikato - Wai = Water, kato = the pull of the river currentThe great voyaging Tainui waka (canoe) is said to have named the river “Waikato”, meaning “flowing water” after observing the river’s strong pull to the sea. The river is an important taonga (treasure) of the Tainui tribe and provides a physical and spiritual sustenance for Maori in the region. A well-known tribal proverb refers to the taniwha (mythical water spirit) dwelling in the river as a metaphor for Maori chiefs: “Waikato taniwha rau, he piko he taniwha, he piko he taniwha” which translates to “Waikato of a hundred taniwha. At every bend a taniwha can be found.” The expression relates the strength of the Waikato tribes to that of the river.

Rahui Pokeka - Huntly Waahi is the Principal marae of Ngāti Mahuta, and traditional home of the kāhui ariki – the Kīngitanga royal family. It is at Huntly, on the west bank of the Waikato River. The present king, Tūheitia, lives nearby.Fun Factoid: “When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car!”

Māori used Huntly coal before Europeans arrived, and explorers and missionar-ies were aware of the existence of coal seams from the 1840s. It has been suggested that Pākehā desire to control this resource was one reason for the invasion of the Waikato in 1863. During the war coal was mined from the banks of the Waikato River near Huntly to fuel the British steam-powered gunboats.

• It is advisable that each vehicle have a navigator/watchman awake at all times to ensure safety and that the team is on course. The naviga-tor/watchman should rotate among runners.• Every member of the team, including those supporting runners must be wearing a reflective vest when outside of the team vehicle during nighttime hours of 7:00pm to 6:30am. This includes exchanges, shoul-ders, roadways, and parking areas adjacent to the course. Runners on course from 7:00pm and 6:30am are required to leave the transition area wearing a

reflective vest, headlamp (or carry-ing a torch), and a tail light.• If you have any questions on where to obtain these items, please call or e-mail us.

Recently we sat down with Chris Treacher. Chris was responsible for organising the teams from James Cook Service Academy last year, and most notibly for running the event with a 20kg log to raise awareness and funds for Cure Kids.

Q: How did you come up with the idea to run with the log?A: We knew our team could run so we thought we could do something more. Then Dean mentioned Cure Kids & Eva. We watched the 20/20 documentary & that sold the team. We were runing for Cure Kids & the Mitchell family with a log!Q: What was the highlight moment of the race?A: My highlight was the whole team running leg 36 together & coming across that line with the other teams lining the beach. Humbling experience. Q: What was the hardest part about the event for you? Also the most reward-ing?A: The hardest part was probably lunchtime on Sat-urday. Driving & running was testing to say the least. But to be part of that ex-perience. No one can take that experience from us.

Q:What do you hope to achieve from this years event?A: K2M is more than a race, it’s an opportunity to push to & through your limits & do it with other people in your team and other teams. I hope to run this event with the services academy from James Cook & experience that “selfness not selfish” feeling again.Q: Any tips for a first time K2M’er?A: Enjoy the ride! Inspire others to want to join you next year!

Q: How was running up the King of the Kaimai’s leg with the log?A: Never ask other to do

something you cannot do or have not done. How could I ask my class to do some-thing that I wasn’t willing to do? we didn’t see it as a log but a taonga for a special family & we treated is as such. It was hard but be-tween me & “Tank” (Julius Westerlund) & Riley from Eva’s Angels we got through it.Q: Any last tips or words for the other runners?A: Kahui Whai Kairangi. A group striving for excel-lence. It is better to aim for the start and hit a tree branch on the way up in-stead of aiming for the gut-ter & getting it. It will be challenging, it will be hard. But the comaraderie the felling of accomplishment & the fact that you are part of a small group that has completee a major endur-ance envet is worth every minute! “Aspire to Inspire” run like you stole it!

Ngāruawāhia’s name comes from a 17th-century love story. Te Ngaere, a Waikato chief, and Heke-i-te-rangi, a Ngāti Maniapoto woman, eloped. When their

tribes were reconciled at a great feast, Te Ngaere began the festivities by saying, ‘Wāhia ngā rua’ (break open the food pits).

Tūrangawaewae marae ( A place to stand, footstool)Principal marae of the Kīngitanga, at Ngāruawāhia. In 1919 a Kīngitanga parliament house was built in the town, and in 1921 Te Puea Hērangi, grand-daughter of King Tāwhiao, inspired Kīngitanga supporters to build Tūrangawaewae marae. This fulfilled a prophecy of Tāwhiao that one day his people would return to Ngāruawāhia. The main meeting house, Māhinaarangi, was opened in 1929, and another, Tūrongo, in 1938. The Māori king frequently hosts visiting dignitaries there, and the marae complex is occasionally open to members of the public.

Runner safety is our #1 priority. When the sun goes down we ask you to use extra caution! Also, there is a chance that if you’re team is running faster than anticipated, we may have to hold you until 4:45 AM at exchange 20. This allows just enough time for you to make it to the edge of the Kaimai’s right at the sunrise. If we allow teams to leave Matamata earlier than that we put you at a much greater risk of injury and getting lost in a very thick forested area. So if you happen to get in a little early, go get a free coffee, take a nap at the park, & get ready for more fun!

Mauao (pronounced ‘MooOh’ not ‘MowWow’) is the sacred mountain aka Mount Maunganui (232m) at the entrance to Tauranga Harbour. Its name, meaning ‘caught in the light of the day’, comes from the leg-end in which Mauao was once a nameless mountain,

spurned in love by the beautiful mountain Pūwhenua. One night he begged the fairy-like creatures of the for-est to drag him to the ocean and end his misery. But the creatures fled as the morning sun’s rays struck, and he was transfixed on the spot

Team SpotlightPrior to the race we had a chance to catch up with Joe Naufahu from team Ludus Magnus. Joe & his team took second place last year...while doing hundreds of burpees at each exchange!

Q: Tell us about your gym, Ludus Magnus.A: 1. Ludus Magnus was the largest of the gladiatorial schools in ancient Rome. The latin word Ludus has a num-ber of meanings which include play, game, sport, training, and was also used to refer to gladiator schools. At Ludus Magnus we revive the spirit of the gladiator by providing a forum where people from all walks of life, can come and unleash their own unique inner gladiator. There is one in all of us. We are a community with a strong team ethos even though we firmly believe the battle is always within. If you’re coming to Ludus for a workout there a few things you should bring - a towel, a drink bottle, and some cour-age. There are also a few things you shouldn’t bring - white tee shirts, your ego, and kipping. Have Fun, Train Hard,

and Belong... The motto of a Ludian and a motto we can all live by.

Q: How did you get involved in K2M? How many teams are you putting in?

A: Dean Grace approached me be-fore the first K2M and I was in-stantly hooked. Must have been

that killer smile Gracie!!! We love being a part of anything

that will raise money for the needy and even though running isn’t really our thing, the team as-pect of the event was what sold us in the end.

Q: Are you doing anything for charity this year?

A: We commit to a number of char-ity events throughout the year and we are extremely proud to help raise

$$$ for Eva, Night, and Angela during the K2M.

Q: If you had to pick one celebrity look a like to be on your team who would it be?A: It would have to be Ruben Wiki as Jake the Muss.

Q: What was your highlight from last year?A: The highlight for me was crossing the finish line and the elation and sense of camaraderie and achievement that I celebrated with everyone - not just the Ludus team.

Q: What was the hardest part of the event?A: Probably the witching hour or those early hours of the morning when everyones tired and its cold and dark. Thats where the real questions get asked about why you are doing this. But all you gotta do is remember those vid-eos of those beautiful kids and you find another gear.

Q: Any tips for first time participants? A: Drink plenty of fluid. Don’t try to do 100 burpees at every checkpoint and make sure you have warm but com-fortable clothing - skins are a must!

Q: What’s your goals for this years race?A: Goal as it was last year is to finish in one piece both in-dividually and as a team unit as close to the leading pack as possible. Realistically our team is not going to win the race but we aren’t just participating either. We want to get to the Mount as soon as we can!!!

Q: Who is the strongest runner on your teams?A: Our strongest runner is Anna Bramley - she’s an actual running machine. I think the T1000 would have trouble chasing her down. She placed in the top 5 at the half mar-athon last year and runs competitively in middle distance events throughout the country.

Eva is this little girl who has no cure She has pain and illness and will die from her condition

But she’s had 6 years they said she wouldn’t from advances in medical research

And not a single day does she feel sorry for her self She’s magic .. She lives her life with gusto full of laughter and playing and kid things .. And memories .. Watching crazy people run things like the k2m are what entertains

her My kids are raised to know they will leave this world a

better place having had laughter and fun and the best life possible

It’s about making a difference for others .. And they doKids love excitement anything is exciting when you live like

this .. So get excited for them .. Because they are cheering you on..

The whole way I would love for Evs to oneday be old enough to run this to even sit in the car .. Heck to even stand at a check point but

she won’t .. She can though live it through the rest of us .. Through our excitement, through our struggle and our joy

Your doing this to achieve a massive milestone of running from Papakura to the Mount but by doing this you are also helping a little girl and a really worthwhile charity. You will be raising awareness and hopefully RAISING FUNDSSome of you did it last year and had the time of your life .. Remember how it felt , remember why you did it. You may be doing it because your lovely and said yes .. You love to run ... But your also doing it also for the cause ..

You might not know Evs directly or me but Cure Kids funds medical research in to a wide range of illnesses that affect kids .. 1 in 30 Kiwi kids are affected by a genetic malformation. that’s far too many! You could be the next parent to a child that does .. There are 30 k people on Eva’s fbk page who will watch you run K2m who will see

your messages .. Who will cheer you on or who may need that boost to get them through another day fighting for their kid knowing their are people out their helping but doing it while having a flippen wicked time is what mat-

ters

You will all come back better people from this .. I promise .. You will all come back knowing you have made a difference I promise

Just as I promise Eva that every day her life will be amazing ..I don’t break promises

See you at the start line!

EVA BIO

Eva Mitchell has been fighting to survive her entire life. She was born with only half a diaphragm after suffering a diaphragmatic hernia during fetal development. With a hole in her diaphragm, nothing was holding Eva’s vital organs in place and they pushed up into her chest cavity, preventing her lungs from developing normally.Eva spent her first three months in a coma on life support and at just six weeks of age, Eva underwent her first operation to rebuild her dia-phragm and reposition her organs.Eva’s condition is rare. Doctors are kept guessing as Eva’s condition can usually be repaired through surgery but hers is recurring – each time they fix it, the hole in her diaphragm shortly reappears.

After multiple surgeries, 11 bouts of pneumonia and several strokes, she has defied the odds to be alive today. Eva’s stomach and bowel do not function at all, so she is feed nutrients through her blood stream via her liver. She remains on intense medication throughout the day and night and her body is constantly developing complications that drastically endanger her life and require immediate intervention.

Developmentally Eva is on target for her age and she is as sharp as a tack! Apart from the oxygen tube in her nose and life-saving tubes poking out of her clothes it is difficult to believe she is so sick, as she looks like a healthy child.

She loves Dora the Explorer, Little Red Riding Hood and her older sister Mela, seven, more than anything in the world.
