Kalamata is a strong contender for the title of European Cultural Capital for 2021.
The purpose of KALAMATA:21 is to awaken collectivity , to sen-sitize and stimulate its citizens into actively participating in the process of transforming the city from a small town in the Europe-an hinterland into a global city. Let Kalamata serve as a European example of decentralized cultural advancement and as a cocoon of creativity.
With its central axis revolving around culture, KALAMATA:21 de-fends equality, transparency and integrity and welcomes all peo-ple, regardless of their gender, age, ethnicity, social class, re-ligion or sexual orientation. At our core, we promote European values of mutual respect, soli-darity and collaboration. Access to culture, protecting our region against unregulated urban and financial development, promoting our cultural heritage and authen-ticity, utilizing new technologies and raising awareness among
the public at large of culture in its purest form provide our cen-tral direction and serve as a bea-con to guide Kalamata in its role as European Cultural Capital. For this reason, we continue to strive to strengthen our artistic and cul-tural education as well as advanc-ing unconventional and innova-tive artistic initiatives.
The vision for Kalamata is the sto-ry of a city that opened its doors onto Europe by means of a rev-olution, survived a devastating earthquake and was reborn; of a city that, although challenged by these dark times of econom-ic strife, is once again mobiliz-ing itself to defend culture in its broader sense—a culture that is beyond the arts and above and beyond borders.
It is a city entrenched in the nat-ural environment of the Greek south; a city that is stirring, sur-facing, emerging; a city that is ris-ing.

2Concept
The Kalamata Rising pro-gramme seeks to bring about a strategic step-change, a gradual cultural upgrading and awakening through our city’s candidacy for—and, ul-timately, tenure as—EcoC.
This is a long-term propos-al that will open up the city, bring back some of its self-ex-iles, attract people from other cities and from abroad, and even attract the kind of tour-
ist that respects the efforts of a small city to protect nature, to promote its cultural herit-age and to invest in contem-porary arts and digital cul-ture.
The concept tells the story of a city that is opening up to Europe through a Revolution, then an earthquake, and now the crisis of the present. And coming out of each new chal-lenge well.
Let Kalamata serve as a model for decentralised cultural development. To establish Periphery as the new CosmopolisPrevent brain drainTo overcome citizenspassivityExtroversion
