SEAMING MACHINE MAINTENANCE AND LUBRICATION

1. General

The seamer is a most critical component of the ABM-120 System. It is a small machine

required to do a big job and therefore requires a greater maintenance effort. It is very

important that the seamer be inspected for loose parts prior to every job and every day during

the job. The chain is the highest wear item and requires replacement most often. Be sure it

is tight. A loose chain can cause costly damage to other parts of the seamer. The seamer

should be sheltered from severe weather, kept clean and dry. Always set the seamer on a

clean piece of metal or plywood, not on dirt or mud. Do not adjust dry rollers too tight.

Over tightening of the drive rollers with #5 threaded rod and handle willresult in premature failure of threaded rod #5, pressure bar #2 and rollerbearings (total of eight #30’s). In addition to over tightening, keep thethreaded rod free of dirt, mud, etc.

Periodic and regular lubrication of the seamer drive components is also of great importance.

The seamer should be lubricated via the grease fittings prior to every job and once a week

during the job. Failure to properly lubricate the seamer will result in premature wear and

breakdown.

Figure 17 - SEAMING MACHINE MAINTENANCE & LUBRICATION

Seaming Machine Maintenance

a) Clean rollers daily and wax with paste wax to ensure long life and prevent marking of

painted panels.

b) Inspect daily for frayed or cut electrical cords.

c) Check drive rollers daily for lateral looseness. Install adjusting shims as necessary.

Bottom drive shafts as shown, top drive shafts next to roller inside. Add enough shims to

remove all play with bolts tight. Do not operate seamer with loose bearings.

d) Inspect daily for loose parts. Inspect weekly (with safety cover removed) for loose parts.

At this time, also inspect chain for wear.

NOTE: Loose parts generally refer to bolts, knobs, etc. If loose partsare found, they should be cleaned, dried and re-installed withLOCTITE 242.

e) When chain sags excessively, this indicates necessity for a new chain. Worn out chain

will cause sprockets to wear out rapidly. Thirty-seven inches of #40 chain and one

master link requires approximately 20 minutes to install. Sprockets are more expensive

and require more installation.

f) Every seamer should be thoroughly inspected monthly for chain wear, motor condition,

including brushes, and general condition. Seamers are subject to more rough treatment

so require more maintenance.

g) Riding the seamer will cause chain and motor to wear more rapidly.

Seaming Machine Lubrication

a) Lubricate chains, sprockets and gears with dry type lubricant (NAPA Part #765-1370 or

equivalent). Oil or grease on the chains and sprockets will attract dirt and abrasives and

decrease the life of the chain drives.

b) Grease weekly the four drive rollers and four fittings. Grease one pump per month for

other fitting behind inside roller. Wipe off excess.

c) Remove drive roller bearings (eight total) and wash with solvent and re-grease annually.

(See Seaming Machine Repair and Overhaul)

NOTE: Never lubricate slide rods. If rods are gummed up, remove drivestage completely from casting, clean rods and casting holes withsolvent, replace drive stage and tighten bolts while stage remains fullyopen.

NOTE: See Alignment of Slide Rods.

a) Open first and third stages slightly, second stage fully.

b) Slide steel ruler between drive rollers.

c) Tighten first and third stages on ruler.

d) Close second stage.

e) If radii of both rollers do not touch corners of ruler:

1. Loosen Set Screw at “A”

2. Move OUTSIDE ROLLER up or down as required.

3. Tighten Set Screw (must contact flat portion of shaft).

NOTE: Over tightening may cause panel and/or machine damage.

2. Alignment of Slide Rodsa) Loosen both bolts on Pressure Bar

b) Open Drive Stage fully.

c) Tighten both bolts while Stage remains open.

d) Should slide freely.

NOTE: Never lubricate slide rods. If rods are gummed up, remove drivestage completely from casting, clean rods and casting holes withsolvent, replace drive stage and tighten bolts while stage remains fullyopen.

SEAMING MACHINE REPAIR & OVERHAUL

1. Seamer Repair And Overhaul By Item

NOTE: Refer to Fig. 19, Fig. 20, and Fig. 21.NOTE: Most parts on the seamer are considered replaceable rather thanrepairable. Because of the big job they do, the seamer should be wellmaintained.NOTE: Before repairs begin, be sure power cord is unplugged.

a) Item #1 Main Casting (Aluminum). During overhaul the main areas to inspect are the

threads tapped into the aluminum casting and also the bearing bores to notice if

bearing races are turning in the bore.

NOTE: If threads are damaged, it's possible to use a Heli Coil Kit to repair threads. In

some cases, for a quick fix it's possible to drill and tap to next size larger bolt.

NOTE: If a race is possibly spinning in the casting, it is sometimes possible to peen the

bearing bore with a center punch to allow a tighter fit of the race into the bore. If

damage to the bearing bore is severe, the casting may need to be replaced.

b) Item #2 Pressure Bar is used for alignment of slide rods. When damaged

replacement is required (see Item #5 below).

c) Item #3 Bottom Bearing Block (Aluminum) should be treated the same as Main

Casting #1.

d) Item #4 Slide Rods should never be lubricated. During overhaul, remove Drive State

completely from main casting. Clean Slide Rods and Main Casting holes with solvent

and wipe dry. Reinstall Drive Stage and tighten bolts on Pressure Bar while stage

remains fully open.

e) Item #5 Threaded Rod & Handle is damaged by over tightening. Damage to

Threaded Rod will require replacement of Threaded Rod #5 and Pressure Bar #2 as a

pair. After installation of new parts, lubricate Threaded Rod with dry lube (NAPA #765-

1366). During use, lubricate Threaded Rod lightly as required.

Page 22: K span seaming machine

f) Item #6 Idler Sprocket Assembly should be inspected during overhaul (two

assemblies per seamer). If sprockets or bearings are worn or damaged, replacement

of entire assembly is suggested.

NOTE: Use Loctite 242 on retaining clip bolts.

g) Item #7 Grease Fittings (5 Total) replace as required.

h) Item #8 Front Block should be inspected. Damage is rare, but the front casting must be

removed for repair of Items #9, #11 and #21.

NOTE: Be careful when removing front casting so small spring on #11 is not lost.

NOTE: When installing front cover, be sure Inside Roller #22 and Spring Pin Assembly

#1 is in the lock position. Then lift the front cover slightly and rotate outside Bevel Gear

assembly until roll pin hole points in correct direction, so handle, when installed, will be

positioned correctly.

i) Item #9 Outside Bevel Gear Assembly: Gear, Shaft and Handle should be inspected

and replaced if required.

NOTE: Roll pin attaching handle to shaft must be removed so the handle can betaken off

prior to removing Safety Cover #10.

j) Item #10 Safety Covers should be repaired and repainted as required.

k) Item #11 Spring Pin Assembly should be inspected and replaced as required. (See

Item #22 for more Information).

l) Item #12 Top Drive Roller (Chrome Plated) should be inspected. If the hard chrome is

damaged to the point that the roller is marking the painted steel or it's visible that there is

a wear line where the chrome is gone, the roller should be replaced.

NOTE: Removal of the attaching bolt on Top Drive Roller #12 will permit removal of Top

Drive Shaft Assembly and access to the drive bearings. This is also the bolt to remove

for shimming assembly.

m) Item #13 Top Drive Gear: Replace as necessary by removing the bolt attaching

sprocket #17. Top Drive Gear and Bottom Drive Gear normally should be replaced as a

pair.

n) Item #14 Drive Motor: Replace or remove and repair. The brushes, switch and power

cord are replaceable.

Page 23: K span seaming machine

NOTE: If seamer motor runs but the rollers don't turn, first inspect for broken chain. If

the chain is not broken then probably the problem is a sheared half moon key inside the

drive motor gear head. Remove drive motor from main casting (4 bolts) and remove the

four bolts holding gear head on motor and replace half moon key.

o) Item #15 On-Off Switch should be replaced as required.

p) Item #16 Forward - Reverse Control requires little maintenance. This item does

provide access to motor brushes.

q) Item #17 Top Roller Drive Sprocket should be replaced as required.

r) Item #18 Bottom Drive Roller (chrome plated) should be replaced when worn or

damaged.

s) Item #19 Bottom Drive Shaft: Replace if key way is worn or bearing race has worn

shaft. Also inspect and clean threads for bolts.

t) Item #20 Bottom Drive Gear should be replaced if damaged as a pair with Top Drive

Gear #13.

NOTE: Removal of the Bottom Drive Gear attaching bolt will permit removal of Bottom

Drive Shaft #19 and provide access to the drive bearings. This is also the bolt to remove

for shimming the assembly.

v) Item #21 Inside Roller Shaft Assembly (off-set): Shaft, Inside Bevel Gear (Gear held

by two counter-sunk set screws). Removal of this assembly requires removal of front

casting #8 for access to Inside Bevel Gear. Loosening of the two set screws on the gear

is necessary before removal of shaft is possible.

NOTE: If lateral movement is present, replacement of Bronze Bushing #30 will be

necessary.

NOTE: When re-installing shaft, be sure the shaft is firmly seated in casting. Then be

sure beveled gear is firmly seated down on the shaft before tightening the two set screws.

w) Item #22 Inside Roller (Stainless Steel), two bearings press-fit: Clean, polish and wax

roller, also check that the bearings turn smoothly. If not, remove assembly (see #21) and

replace bearings.

x) Item #23 Outside Roller (chrome plated) should be replaced if the chrome is damaged.

If the two bearings do not turn smoothly, replace bearings. This assembly is held in place

by set screw #A. When reinstalling the assembly, read section on Seamer Alignment Y.

y) Item #24 Drive Chain is size #40 and is 37 in (94 cm) long. Lubricate or replace as

required.

z) Item #25 Main Drive Sprocket Assembly should be inspected for damage and replaced

as required.

NOTE: The attaching bolt must be checked for tightness. If the bolt is not completely

tight, remove bolt, clean threads and apply LOCTITE 242 to threads. Re-install and

tighten very snug.

aa)Item #26 Snap Ring requires no maintenance.

ab)Item #27 Bearing Race should be greased or replaced as required.

NOTE: Bearing Race #27 and Roller Bearing #28 should be replaced as a set.

ac) Item #28 Roller Bearing should be cleaned with solvent and inspected for wear and

damage. Re-pack bearing or replace as required.

ad)Item #29 Adjusting Shims must be added to compensate for bearing wear. Shims are

available in thicknesses of .005 in (0.125 mm), .010 in (0.25 mm),.015 in ( 0.375 mm)

and .02 in (0.50 mm). Add just enough shims to remove all lateral movement. A small

amount of pre load on the bearings is good, but do not add too many shims or the

assembly will turn hard, putting more strain on the drive motor, chains and sprockets.

NOTE: After final adjustment of shims is complete, disassemble one more time and use

LOCTITE 242 on the attaching bolt.

ae)Item #30 Bronze Bushing will require replacement if lateral movement of Inside Roller

Shaft #21 is present. Lubricate bushing with grease during re-assembly.

af) Item #A Allen Head Set Screw holds the Outside Roller #23 in alignment.

ag)Item #B Spindle Gear Key: NOTE, If the Drive Motor runs but the drive rollers don't turn,

the problem could be a sheared key inside the Motor Gear Case. First, inspect the chain

and main drive sprocket. If no problem is found in those areas, remove drive motor and

replace sheared Spindle Gear Key.
