PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGEDear Parents and Friends,

As we head into the second half of the term, we hope all families were able to enjoy some quality time together over the long weekend. The weather was certainly conducive to indoor activities, so perhaps you took the opportunity to get out some board games or catch a family movie together. Psychologists report that parents often feel that they need to do extravagant activities with their children or buy them the latest toys to build relationships, but what most children want more than anything is just time spent together – it is more valuable than anything else. Most importantly, the time we devote now into building relationships, serves us well when our children are adolescents – so consider how you can build now for future strength.

Thank you P&CA huge thank you to our wonderful hardworking P&C for providing the new Welcome Sign & National Anthem Banner for the school. They look fantastic!

Multicultural Speaking FinalsLast week we held the finals of the Multicultural Speaking Competition, with two students from Stage 2 and Stage 3 being selected to progress to the next level of the competition. We were so impressed with the courage and outstanding level of public speaking displayed by all students in the competition and would like to congratulate Lazar R and Ella F from Stage

3 and Sylvie M and Jessica K from Stage 2 on their selection to the next round. Our thanks to ex-student, James Smith, for his adjudication and to Mrs Connery for her organisation of this event.

Focus on WellbeingWe have certainly had a theme of ‘wellbeing’ over the past fortnight. We have hosted the Life Education van in the school, with all classes attending a session with Healthy Harold. This program integrates with our focus on positive wellbeing for students and supports student learning in drug education, making healthy choices and promoting positive eating habits. I would like to thank Ms Virginia St Heaps for her coordination of the program this year.

Students have also been engaging in the Make Your Own Healthy Lunch challenge over the past fortnight, with students and staff showing off their lunches with pride. Let’s hope the trend continues!

Last week we welcomed several parents along to our Life Skills Family Sessions, which provided an opportunity for parents to join in on the fun of the Life Skills program with their children. We hope that some of the mindfulness techniques learnt at school can be replicated at home to promote wellbeing for all families in the school.

And finally, in keeping with our wellbeing theme, last week we had a ‘meeting free’ week to promote a healthy work-life balance for our hard-working teachers. We hope that they were able to re-charge their batteries over the long weekend to help them finish the second half of the term strongly.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Students on ShowOur debating teams represented the school at the next round of the Premier’s Debating Challenge this week with our senior team narrowly missing a win against Curl Curl North PS and our junior team debating Cromer, being defeated by a small margin. It is excellent to see our students growing in their ability to debate effectively against other schools – well done students and coaches!

This weekend our strings and band students will be performing at the Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival and the Wahroonga Music Festival respectively. We wish all ensembles the very best for their performances and thank their conductors and parents for their support of these programs.

Update on School PlanOur 3 strategic directions of Leading, Teaching and Learning are well underway, with several initiatives throughout the school supporting growth in these areas.

Leading: Our leadership team have been engaging in an instructional leadership course with the expertise of our specialist consultant, Jann Farmer-Hailey. We aim to strengthen the team’s skills in data analysis to determine effective ways to monitor student growth in learning, in line with the new literacy and numeracy progressions released by the department throughout this year. We are also looking at leading teacher development through collaborative practices.

Teaching: Our focus for professional learning in 2018 has been the What Works Best document, developed by the Department’s Centre for Educational Statistics and Evaluation (CESE). This document looks at which teaching practices are most effective in improving our student growth data. Each of the 7 elements are being explored through spirals of inquiry and reflective practice in grade teams, with grade achievements then shared broadly across our staff. This collaborative process has been enabled by the introduction of Sportspro lessons each week. We thank the community for their support of this program, which not only provides expert skill development for our students, but also facilitates vital collaboration time for our staff each week.

Learning: Following from our professional learning, teachers have been

experimenting with ways to make learning visible for their students, with learning intentions, success criteria and goal setting being implemented in classrooms across the school. Students are learning how to reflect on their learning in meaningful ways through reflection journals, ‘exit slips’ and self-assessing their work against criteria. Here are some examples from Year 5…

Looking forward to seeing you at the working bee this Saturday,

Leesa Martin Principal

. Tomorrow we are holding our Term 2 working bee on Saturday June16 from 1pm – 4pm. If you have been down the driveway lately you would have noticed how presentable it is after the last two years’ worth of working bees. Other parts of the school are taking shape as well but will only do so with your continued help. See you and the kids tomorrow?

Our jobs list includes:

• Construction of garden beds in collaboration with Peter Rutherford of Kimbriki Eco-Garden and Class 5R – Miss Charlotte Reddan needs some assistance to get this project underway, so all classes can enjoy the benefits of growing and eating vegetables, herbs and flowers. What a great project!

• cleaning up and changing the costume room with the music storeroom – co-ordinated by Mr Jack Tier

• water pressure cleaning

• ongoing bushland maintenance

• grounds rubbish and uniform cleanup – thanks children!

• bring shovels, gloves and a wheelbarrow if possible.

• library books to be sorted

IF RAINING IT WILL STILL BE ON - PLEASE MEET IN THE LIBRARY.

The Social Sub-Committee started their detailed planning of Term 3’s Trivia Night with a meeting at the racquet bar recently. The Trivia night will be in the school hall on the August 11 with some hot food provided, bring along a plate if you want nibbles with your drinks. I’ve been told a number of parents weren’t aware it is coming up, if you are reading this can you please tell your friends or just check to see if they get the newsletter. It is next term but we know how quickly that will come around so get organising to make a table of ten.

The night is a good opportunity to catch up with people and contacts you or your children know through the school. The P&C would naturally like to raise some money to go towards the next round of outdoor equipment. Please have a think and see if there is something you could donate for raffles or prizes. All things big and small are appreciated. There are no other fundraising events this year so we look forward to your help with this event. Let Ro know your suggestions on her email [email protected] or alternatively at [email protected]

The P&C has funded the Welcome Sign over the entrance walkway and the Anthem Banner in the hall.

A huge thank you to Steve Ralston for designing the sign and banner and Wattle Signs & Print for producing and installing the signs.

I’m sure you’ll all agree that the banner across the entrance way is very welcoming and now both verses of our anthem can be sung with gusto!!

ORANGE FRUITO-VEGO – WEDNESDAY 20TH JUNEPlease send orange fruits or vegetables next Wednesday. Each term we highlight the nutritional value of one or two particular colours, and the importance of eating a wide range of fresh foods. The national health guidelines for primary school children recommend eating 5 servings of vegetable per day and 2

serves of fruit. Try sending vegetables as well as fruit. Crunchy carrot sticks always get munched happily. Although Fruito-Vego is usually meant to be only RAW fresh food, cooked sweet potato or pumpkin are welcome on Wednesday to increase the range of vegetable foods. And of course, oranges and mandarins are fresh at the moment, or how about paw-paw, rock melon, fuji fruit, even tomatoes seem to be turning orange.

Make My Own Lunch Home ChallengeWell done to all those parents supporting their children in making their own lunches and morning teas. The last two Wednesdays have been Show Off Your Lunch days and we have been thrilled to see so many students proudly showing off lunches they made themselves. Nearly all lunches include a carbohydrate and a protein, but an extra hurrah for those children including several

vegetables. As you can see in the photos, our principal has also been an enthusiastic adopter of the Year 6 salad jar. Completed challenge cards are to be returned by Friday 22nd June so we can arrange mini-merits and fruit kebabs.

LiveLifeWell@School Parent meeting – Tuesday 26th June, 3.00pm in Stellar roomAre you interested in helping our children develop lifelong healthy lifestyle habits? Got some ideas? Please come along to the LLW@S parent meeting. We have a wonderful small but dynamic team of parents who have this year organised Eat a Rainbow for K-2 in Term 1, and Make My Own Lunch for 3-6 in Term 2. New faces are needed to join this very effective parent group and keep the momentum.

Over the years our LLW@S parent group has played a valuable role in raising nutritional awareness through a range of initiatives and with constructive input into the food provided at the canteen and school events. Promoting daily exercise is another main thrust of LLW@S, as well as reducing screen time. Please let me know through the office email if you would like to come to the meeting on Tues 26th June, or even if you can’t come this time, but are interested.

... Zone Cross CountryCongratulations to all of our amazing competitors!

On Friday June 1 students travelled to Rat Park to participate in the Zone Cross Country event. Nine schools in our zone competed on the day with 54 students in each race.

Elanora Heights students were excellent representatives for our school with every participant striving to do their best and achieving results they should be proud of. Overall our school finished in 7th place in the event. Our 8/9 girls ran a fantastic race, winning the overall race as a team. Many of our students finished in the top twenty places in their individual races, with two students qualifying for the Regional Cross Country in June.

The heavy rain and cold didn’t deter our competitors and it was a pleasure to witness their enthusiastic and supportive attitudes, as well as their great level of sportsmanship throughout the day.

We would like to extend a very special thanks to the parents who marshalled a station at the event - the day could not go ahead without you. Also a big thank you to other parents and family members who were able to attend and cheer on the runners.

A special mention to these students who finished in the top 10:

10 Years – Anja F (7th)10 years – Max D (10th)8/9 Years – Zahli S (4th)

Good luck at the regional carnival Zahli and Max.
