PREFACE

Our website, www.k-5mathteachingresources.com, provides numerous math games and math center activities to provide hands on experiences with skills and concepts that are critical to the development of number sense and computational fluency as outlined in the Common Core State Standards for K-2. K-2 Addition and Subtraction Strategies provides opportunities for paper and pencil practice to further develop a framework of mental strategies on which more advanced thinking techniques can be built. Intended for use after students have had numerous opportunities to explore these mental strategies using concrete materials, these materials are ideally suited for small group instruction, independent practice, homework, or assessment purposes.

Section 1 focuses on developing efficient strategies for learning and internalizing single digit addition and subtraction facts within 20. Research shows that the most effective way for students to learn the basic facts is to arrange the facts into clusters (Fuson, 2003).

K-2 Addition and Subtraction Strategies focuses on the following addition clusters: count on, use doubles and make a ten. The count on cluster includes facts that involve counting on 1, 2 or 3. The use doubles cluster includes doubles facts and facts that involve doubling a number then adding one or two. The make a ten cluster includes facts where one addend is 7, 8, or 9. As seen in the tables below these three clusters cover all 100 basic addition facts (0+0- 9+9).

The light blue shading in this table shows the 64 addition count on facts and their turnarounds.

Some basic facts are covered by more than one strategy. For example, 8 + 6 can be solved using doubles plus 2 if the 6 is doubled, double minus 2 if the 8 is doubled, or make a ten (8 + 6 =10 + 4 =14). Students should be encouraged to select the strategy that allows them to recall facts quickly and accurately.

Subtraction is the inverse operation of addition. The Common Core Standards suggest that using addition is an effective thinking strategy for helping students learn the basic subtraction facts. Standard 1.OA.4 states that first grade students need to: Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem. For example, subtract 10-8 by finding the number that makes 10 when added to 8.

Some pages in this resource require the use of dot or numeral cards. A blank template is included for students to make their own sets of these materials, as this in itself is a valuable learning experience. Teachers intending to use these pages for homework purposes should send the dot and numeral card templates home early in the year with a note to parents explaining that they will be used on an ongoing basis and should be stored in a readily accessible location.

Section 2 of this resource focuses on more advanced addition and subtraction strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and the relationship between addition and subtraction. This section builds on the three clusters from Section 1 to take students beyond the basic facts and allow them to see how previously learned mental strategies can be used to compute problems with two and three digit numbers.

Section 3 of this resource contains bonus math centers for students to practice the count on, use doubles, and make a ten clusters. When working in a center with a partner students should be encouraged to:

a) Read the equation aloud.

b) Explain their strategy (students may use the sentence frames included with the games to scaffold their verbal explanations).

c) Record the equation.

The three clusters used for addition can also be used for subtraction. For example, the count on strategy can be used to solve problems with a difference of 0, 1, 2, or 3 such as 6 - 5 or 10 - 7. Knowledge of addition doubles can be used to solve subtraction facts such as 12 - 6 or 17 - 8. Other subtraction problems such as 15-9 can be solved mentally using the make a ten strategy (9 + 1 = 10, 10 + 5 = 15 so 15 – 9 = 6). While addition has turnaround facts such as 5 + 3 = 8 and 3 + 5 = 8, subtraction has partner facts such as 9 – 7 = 2 and 9 – 2 = 7. Focusing on the count on, use doubles and make a ten clusters allows students to develop fluency with all basic addition and subtraction facts.
