Astrology is one of the six Vedangas – Vedangas are those sciences that help in
understanding and implementation of whatever is explained in the Vedas. Without Vedangas
understanding Vedas is almost impossible. Hence it is said that vidya consists of 14
components which are the four Vedas, six Vedangas and four Upangas.
Astrology or jyothisha is said to be the eyes of the purusha of Veda (assuming Veda is a
purusha). This means that the Vedas see as a result of jyothisha alone. In ancient times,
jyothisha was part and parcel of life itself – even as today we get up and read the
newspaper, similarly jyothisha was something that was always used naturally. For example
in order to perform a yajna or yaga, jyothisha was consulted in order to find the appropriate
time. Another example is that of marriage – marriage is set only after finding an appropriate
muhurtha. If muhurtha is good, then even if matching or compatibility of horoscopes of
bride and groom isn’t there or isn’t good. But gone are the days when astrology was not
only revered but used by almost all people. Today it is something that is either seen
through skeptical eyes or through eyes of testing out. People want to rebuke astrology and
therefore approach an astrologer. Needless to say such people incur sins in one or the other
way. If they are rebuking a true astrologer then they will reap the bad fruits very soon
itself.
It is the effort of this magazine to bring out the various nuances of astrology and thereby
bring to the notice of modern skeptical people of today that this science is divine and has to
be used appropriately in order to avoid problems in life. Though problems in life cannot be
fully eradicated without knowledge of Vedanta, in order to learn Vedanta problems have to
temporarily vanish or reduce – a person who has physical ailment will not be able to listen
to Vedanta, let alone implement it. If through astrology he is able to avoid physical
problems then he will be able to at least listen to Vedanta and thereby he will eventually be
able to implement Vedanta in his day-to-day life.
There are many people who take the side of astrology and who oppose it vehemently. It
might be true that after reaching a spiritual master or Guru, astrology has no meaning but
this is only valid if we have surrender unto the Guru. Without surrender, we will not be able
to progress in the spiritual path and will face problems at all levels. Therefore using

4
astrology in order to remove problems will ensure that we are able to focus on the Guru and
the teachings of the Guru (thus enabling us to progress in the spiritual path).
And above all, what harm does it do if we take resort to astrology even if we have
approached a master? Astrology is only going to tell us how our future can be in the current
flow of actions. If we find that we don’t want our future to be in the particular way astrology
predicts, then we can anyway perform propitiatory actions or contrary actions that will then
enable us to change the future (as to how we want it to be).
People often think wrongly that whatever astrology is the end of the matter. This s not the
case. If it we so, then there is no choice of freewill in life and we will all be living a life
similar to computers (programmed to behave in a way which can never be changed).
Astrology is just an indication of what is going to happen. As to whether it should happen
like that or not is upto an individual. He can decide and change his future if he puts
appropriate effort towards it.
Though a true astrologer’s words are like the words of Vedas and therefore will be true to
the word, still it isn’t the end of the matter regarding future of an individual. Most of the
time the astrologer’s word happens as such itself, still there is an option for the individual to
change. A true astrologer will not just predict the future but will also tell the way to change
the future if needed (with appropriate action).
All sadhakas who aspire to be true astrologers should remember that astrology is a science
that only predicts the future and it also provides way to change the future. The way to
change the future for a questioner also has to be provided by the true astrologer. If this
isn’t provided, then the astrologer isn’t a true astrologer and only will be deluding people
and in the process incurring sins for himself.
Astrology like the Vedas is a subtle science and therefore has to be understood properly –
else there will be total misunderstanding only that leads to sorrow in the long run. Analysis
of the horoscope has to be done thoroughly before making predictions and while making
predictions, care should be taken to provide the solution if prediction has to be changed as
well. There is nothing that is set in the world and therefore solution to all problems are
provided by astrology itself. Only a true astrologer will be able to find out all the problems
Jyothisha Prakaasham Kanya (Jaya)
Vetti yah vedaangam sa aapnothi paramam padam
prathikoolanivaarakam mokshopakaarakam cha
5
and the solution to all problems and thereby will be able to help sadhakas progress in the
spiritual path (after eradication of all worldly problems – as much as possible).
Though it isn’t an easy science to master, it goes without saying that it gives immense
satisfaction to the mind when one is able to help out others facing problems in life
(irrespective of whether the problem is solved or the questioner heeds to the advice of the
astrologer). Proper sadhana, learning and prayers to Ishwara has to be done by sadhakas
aspiring to become true astrologers. Eventually such sadhakas will be able to become true
astrologers and thereby will be able to themselves attain the goal of moksha and help
others attain moksha.
May we all strive to learn and implement the science of astrology so that we are able to
progress ourselves to the ultimate goal of life of moksha and help others as well to attain
moksha.

Recap
Previously we saw the fourth sadhana of concentration – concentration is important in that
it will make our mind focus on astrology. As long as the mind is distracted into many
thoughts, there will not be focus. When focus is not there in worldly affairs itself, it will lead
to mostly failure and therefore sorrow. For example a student whose mind is on different
things like playing, watching tv, roaming around etc. will not have focus on studies and
therefore he will not score good marks and might not even pass in his studies.
When this is the case with worldly affairs, what to talk about scriptural studies like
astrology? Astrology is a divine science of predicting the past, the present and the future. It
is a science that one can master only after lot of effort (along with grace of the Lord).
Therefore it is important to gain concentration so that all effort is put towards astrology
alone.
Concentration as we saw is on two objects – either on Ishwara or on good or pure things.
The more one concentrates, the more calm the mind will be or the lesser the thoughts in
the mind will be. Even as a house that is free can easily be accommodate with people and
things, similarly a mind with less thoughts will be able to accommodate more thoughts with
full focus. Purity and concentration of mind are the results of concentration on Ishwara or
good things. A true astrologer is one who has focus or concentration which alone will make
him analyze the horoscope, the questioner, surroundings, planets etc. and make predictions
that are accurate so that it leads to the well being of the questioner.
Let’s now continue with the next sadhana of meditation. Though we might think of Ishwara
or good things and even gain some concentration, it becomes perfect or complete only
through the sadhana of dhyaana.

18. Fifth is dhyaana on objects acceptable to oneself (appealing to oneself).

Generally we simply say that we are meditating but in fact what we are doing is
concentration only (starting to concentrate). When sit and start focusing on an object, we
are starting to concentrate. But other thoughts come and therefore we haven’t yet attained
concentration. Put in Patanjali’s words, concentration is fixing the mind on an object of
focus. The end result of concentration is that our focus is on the object alone. But then we
enter into meditation wherein our mind is full of thought of the object alone. The object nd
the object alone fills our mind. Meditation eventually leads to samaadhi or absorption.
A person who has been able to meditate at will at all times is capable of not only focusing
on one thought but able to easily shift from one thought to another at will. One moment he
might be focused on movies and another moment on novels and yet another moment on
spirituality – this versatility isn’t a sign of fluctuating mind which never has any focus and
shifts from one object to another without any futility or purpose. A mind that has gone
through meditation will be able to take a thought to its purpose or fulfillment while being
able to shift quickly as well from one object to another.
We generally consider people like Sachin Tendulkar as great because they have achieved
perfection in one field of life. But this isn’t great at all and is considered bad or weak with
respect to our ancient culture. In our culture of sanaatana dharma, a person will be
proficient in not just one thing but many things. We see Veda Vyasa being an expert in all
sciences; we find Narada enumerating all the sciences he knows in Brihadaranyaka
Upanishad; even a servant like Vidura is able to explain niti shastra as well as Vedanta.
Thus our ancient culture talks about people being proficient in many things because they
were experts in meditation. As a result of meditation they were able to not only attain
perfection in one area but in whatever area they want at will. This is one of the reason we
find masters like AMMA, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and many others being expert in
different fields through their missions and activities.
The effects of meditation is explained in the next sloka:

19. Fruit is concentration or focus of the mind.
Though we might think that the fruit of concentration and meditation are the same, it isn’t
the case. Concentration leads to purity and focus of mind whereas meditation leads to full
focus of mind. Concentration only leads to partial focus of mind or focus of mind on one
object but when one has gone through the step of dhyaana, the mind will have full focus on
whatever it focuses on. Moreover focus will be attained very quickly or in short period of
time itself.
We can also say that the previous sadhana of concentration is mere thinking of the Lord or
good thoughts in order to purify our mind and make it enter into area of focus whereas
dyaana is full fledged sadhana to gain total concentration on anything (former is based on
bhakti whereas latter is based on yoga).
An astrologer needs a focused mind that remembers all that has been learned, is able to
invoke intuition through grace of the Lord, is able to analyze surroundings and finally is able
to use proper thought-out words to the questioner. All these are only possible if there is full
focus of the mind and this is attained through dhyaana alone. Then alone his predictions will
be fruitful and will set the stage for a smooth life for the questioner (thereby helping him in
attaining moksha eventually).
May we all strive to perform the sadhana of dhyaana so that we are able to become true
astrologers and thereby are able to help others attain the goal of moksha eventually.

Bhavartha Ratnakara - VI
We have now come to the 7th chapter of the text Bhavartha ratnakara by B.V Raman, which
deals with longevity and health.
Health and longevity
1. If the lagna lord is associated with Jupiter, good longevity is indicated. Jupiter is
the karaka for fortune, children and body.
Chart 1
Analysis:
Lagna lord is Jupiter alone. Lagna lord in lagna as well as Jupiter being in lagna, will bestow
the native with long life. Saturn which is the karaka for longevity is also exalted in the 11th
house. Thus the native will posses long span of life.
2. Saturn in association with the 8th lord also confers long life. Saturn’s placement
in the 8th is also good for longevity.

10
Chart 2
Analysis:
Jupiter is the 8th lord in this chart. Jupiter is with Saturn, the karaka for longevity and is
situated in 5th house, which is good.
From moon as well Saturn is well placed in Kendra. 8th lord moon also is in Kendra.
Thus these factors confer long life to the native.
3. The 8th lord in the lagna, along with Ketu, indicates short life.
4. Sun combined with the lord of 9th makes the father long-lived, provided they’re
not together in 9th. However, Sun’s placement in the 9th shortens the father’s life,
as does Moon in 4th for the mother’s longevity.
5. If the 9th lord is in 11th, long life to the father is indicated.
6. Moon, when associated with the 4th lord, indicates a long life to the mother.
7. If either Mars or Jupiter is in 3rd, harm will be caused to the native’s brothers.

11
Chart 3
Analysis:
Mars and Jupiter both are located in the 3rd house from lagna. The native's brother's are
not well off and have problems in life. As Jupiter is a benefic, so the damage is not that
much. Also as Jupiter is the lagna lord the effects of it is not much.
8. If the 3rd is owned and occupied by Jupiter, the person will only have one
Brother.
9. Jupiter in 5th and Venus in 7th lessen the longevity of children and spouse
respectively.
In chart 2 we see that Jupiter is in the 5th house in lagna. Venus is not in the 7th house
though in the natives chart. The native is not married and has no children as well.
10. Long life to the native’s mother is surely to be predicted if Moon conjoins the
4th lord in 5th, 9th or 10th.
11. If the 4th lord is in 4th and it happens to be its moolatrikona, the mother will live
Long.

12. The mother’s longevity will be curtailed by Saturn’s aspect on both the 4th lord
and waning Moon.
Chart 4
Analysis:
Saturn is situated in the 10th house and aspects the 4th house, which signifies mother.
Saturn is also with the karaka for mother which is moon. Moon is weak and is with
associated with evil planet Saturn. All these factors show that the life of mother may not be
long.

Maasaphalam – Kanya of Jaya varsha
We are starting this article from this month, titled Maasaphalam which as the title explains
will provide a brief overview of how the month (s) is going to be and general predictions for
the month.
Currently we are going through the month of Kanya and almost reaching the end of this
month. Thula is the next month. Month as per astrology is based on the position of Sun.
Currently Sun in Kanya and hence it is Kanya month (generally Sun moves on the 15th of
engilsh month – on average from 15 Sep to 15 Oct, Sun is in the house of Kanya).
Kanya or virgo is the house owned or ruled by Mercury. It denotes a virgin and therefore
the characteristics of this house are fluctuations or vibrations, smartness, intelligence,
shrewdness etc. Sun in this house will therefore also provide similar effects though influence
of other planets is also important to give general predictions.
The planetary positions for this month of Kanya are thus:
Jupiter – Cancer
Saturn – Thula
Rahu – Virgo
Ketu – Pisces
Sun – Virgo (moves to Libra on 18th)
Venus – in Virgo and moves to Libra on 19th (approx)
Mercury – moved to Libra but is retrograde and will move back to Virgo on 16th (moves to
Libra after 16 days)
Mars – in Scorpio (and moves on 18th to Sagittarius)
General predictions
Mars has moved from association with Saturn and therefore efforts with respect to natural
calamities and other issues like rape etc. will reduce a bit. Though we do see a lot of effects
of Hurricanes or Typhoons which is expected considering that Mars is in the house of scorpio
and those countries with Lagna as Aries will be affected most as Mars will be in the eighth
house.
Jyothisha Prakaasham Kanya (Jaya)

14
In November Saturn will be moving to Scorpio which is called keeta sthaana and then we
can expect a lot of issues. Saturn generally starts giving effect of the next house in the last
few months before its transition itself. Therefore we are seeing a lot of issues even now like
typhoons, political issues etc. (as Saturn is still in proximity with Mars).
For India, Mars is in the 7th house (lagna being Taurus for India’s horoscope). Therefore
aggressive actions can be expected (which is exactly what Narendra Modi is doing today).
But lot of issues, conflicts within parties and outside parties and with respect to neighbors
and other countries can also be expected (as they are happening as well). Saturn being the
9th-10th lord or yoga karaka in the 6th house from Taurus could be the reason that there was
lot of instability, confusions, economic issues etc. in India. Things can be said to improve a
bit after Saturn moves to Scorpio. Since yoga karaka would be in a Kendra, therefore it
would be time of prosperity for India for the next 2.5 years.
Considering that Sun is in the fifth along with Venus (for India’s lagna of Taurus), bold
actions along with passion can be expected. We can say that Modi’s swacch bharat
movement happened in this month only.
Kanya month is a bad month for Aries, Taurus, Cancer and Pisces people in particular
(owing to planets in bad houses of 6, 8 and 12).
PS: These are general predictions alone and hence shouldn’t be taken for specific people as
such – instead in depth analysis of a horoscope has been to be done before giving
predictions. We will have a deeper analysis of the month of Thula in the next magazine.

Nakshatras - VIII
We have learnt the stars till 21 i.e uttaradam. Let's continue with the 22nd star in the order
which is Sravanam or thiruvonam.
Sravanam/ Thiruvonam
This star is highly esteemed as gods were born in it. In kerala people celebrate onam
festival in the month of August in this star.
Moon is the ruler of this star and the anujanma stars for this are Rohini and hasta. They
have secrets in mind which are set up due to over imaginations.
Imagination, more sacrificial, self destructive in nature and adamant are common among all
these stars. They go extremes, but are able to come out of shocks. Rohini natives show
more of these qualities than hasta and sravanam natives show even lesser of these traits.
Hasta people are more intellectual, want more money and more power.
Sravanam natives suffer defeat at the hands of people around. They will have lot of material
to enjoy in life. They will create small groups, can’t rise above it, they will have small
power. They always will engage themselves in imaginations. They own livelihood in small
groups.
People born in this star would like to adorn themselves with ornaments, scents, cosmetics
and flowers. Usually they will be obese and appreciate other women more than their own
wives. But they will be lucky people with large-heartedness. They will help to their relatives.
Good talkers and comfort loving will they be. They like travel too.
All four padas of sravanam fall in Makara. The rulers of these padas are mars, venus,
mercury and moon. Ruler of the star is moon, the house lord is saturn. For all the padas
moon and Saturn should be considered apart from the pada lords.
1st Pada: Ruler is mars. The three planets to be considered are moon, Saturn and mars.
They are very fickle minded and moody. They have their own way. Aggressive and take

16
wrong decisions. Mind is afflicted with negativities. Problems of mind are indicated but they
will manage themselves well. Native will be childless and suffer from stomach trouble.
2nd pada – Venus is the lord. Native will be comfort loving and lascivious by nature. He will
have many servants and with kindness will elicit work from them. He will talk very cleverly.
They try to escape. They work in fields where imagination is needed. Better than the first
pada.
3rd pada – Mercury is the lord. The native will be wise and learned. He will be a painter. He
will have a generous nature but will love conflicts and quarrels. With sharp wits, he is good
in trading, especially cattle. He is charitable too. They will go behind spiritual people. It is
better than the above two padas.
4th pada – Moon is the lord. The native will be very rich, very loving towards his wife,
devoted to mother and emotional and sentimental by nature. They will face mental upsets
in life. Create unwanted problems. They are over imaginative.
This star is auspicious for naming, seemantam, upanayanam and marriage ceremonies. It
is good for food distribution, for commencing vedic studies and for purchasing new clothes
and ornaments. This star is favourable for the crowning ceremony, for proceeding to one’s
village, or settling down in town and to commence vratas. It is excellent for doing yagnas,
saanti or propitiatory ceremonies, navagrahaa puja, for repetition of mantras, for sowing
and other agricultural activities and for taking medicine.
If a girl attains puberty in this star, they will live happily begetting a good son. No saanti is
needed.
If fever comes, it will last for 11 days only. Propitiatory ceremony for Vishnu is suggested
for cure.
The letters signifying each pada respectively are “Jee”, “Jo”, ”Jay” and “ka”.
They may be fear from disease in the 2nd year of the native. Fear from cobra in the 3rd year,
from fire in the 5th yr, from weapons in the 7thyr and danger to life from fever in the

17
13th yr. The native will suffer from great illness in his 15th yr and danger to his life in his
30th yr. If the native escapes these dangers he will live long for 90 years.
This can be seen like an arrow consisting of three stars in the month of September after
9:30p.m.
Thiruvonam is a star that is ruled by the planet of moon. Therefore like Rohini and Hasta,
people born in this star are imaginative, creative and with lots of ideas. But rohini people
lack a bit of self-confidence, hasta people are a bit dull (or not that much socializing) but
thiruvonam people are the most socializing. They mingle very well with people and are
easy-to-go people. They generally don't take anything that seriously. Therefore they are
easy to mingle or go along with but still they will have their own gang of people.
Since rasi if makara therefore they are in a way discipline oriented and can get interest or
disinterest in whatever they have focus on. This also means that they will have their
preferences which they will not go against.
In a way a peculiar star but very easy to find out people born in this star due to their
socializing yet specific or preference-filled nature.
Dhanishta/ Avittam
As the name suggests, it’s said that the native of this star will turn whatever he/she touches
to gold. He/she has the midas- touch. It consists of four padas resembling a drum – a
mridangam.
Its feminine in gender, rakshasa gana, Lion female is the yoni. Head is the weakest portion
of the body. The eight vasus are its deity. This is called a half star.
Mercury was born in this star. It’s related among birds to the woodpecker and among
insects to the bee.
The ruler of this star is mars. Its anujanma stars are mrigasira and chitta. Compared to
dhanista, the other two are better stars.

General Characteristics
They have dull intellect and study less. They are clever and won’t talk much. They will
create problems for others. They have negative intellect which is dangerous. Others will
have to help the natives to get out of the problems. They talk in vain and show off. They will
be able to accrue wealth only after 40 yrs in life. They earn money with easy methods. They
are not hard working.
They will have a bright face and are persevering in nature. Their mother may be dead in
their early years. Their bodies will be slightly hot. They have tendency to put blame on
others for their own deficiency. They will indulge in frequent litigation's, due to their
obstinate nature.
The four padas of dhanista ruled by sun, mer, venus and mars.
Two padas of this star are in makara and two padas in kumbha. Both these houses are ruled
by Saturn alone. So the planets to be considered are Saturn as the ruler of the house and
mars as the ruler of the star. Apart from this we should consider the padas lords. Here mars
and Saturn are enemies. Whenever such combination comes, the natives of the star will
either suffer or make others suffer. This is more tamo guna dominant group and lesser
amount of rajo guna can be seen.
1st pada : Ruler is sun. They create problems for others. They talk in an indulging way. They
land in trouble and land others also in trouble. They have knack of escaping from situations
so they can manage themselves. Natives of this star are likely to have an obese body.
2nd pada: Mercury is the ruler. They are more clever, dangerous. They are tricky and trap
others easily through words and also by being smart.
3rd pada: Venus is ruler. They are better than above two padas. They can tell lies and can
change sides. They can change stands about others also easily. They will be tactful and
sensible. They will be fearless and also capable of helping others to overcome fear.

19
4th pada: Mars is the lord. They will be cruel, harsh , fat and drunkards. They will do low
level jobs. Belong to more tamo guna dominant group. They are foolish and create problems
and run away.
It is good for ploughing, sowing and planting in the fields. Also good for irrigation and
construction works. According to narada it is good for afforestation.
Good for travel in all directions. If fever comes in this star, it will take a fortnight for cure. It
is suggested that some saanti has to be done for the vasus for quicker cure.
The letters signifying the padas respectively are “su”, ”ku”, ki“and “ke”.
Mars dasa lasting 7 years pertains to this star. The native is likely to get illness in the 5th,
18th and 28th years. There is danger to his life in his 25th yr.
There is fear from cobra in the 40th yr. Danger by drowning in the 50th yr. If saanthi done in
his 60th yr he will live till his 80th yr.
The star sravanam is a deadly enemy to this star.
This star rises in the month of September and is seen at 11p.m in the sky.
Dhanishta or avittam people are generally clever but dull in intellect. But very good in
interactions, they generally go well with everybody. But they can create problems for others
who are associated with them (as a result of their lack of proper intellect). Sometimes we
can also find that they will start blaming others for mistakes or mishaps happening.
Mercury being the planet ruling this star, such people are very good in interactions,
diplomatic in nature, intelligent but not very intellectual (a bit dull on the intellect). They are
sharp in whatever their focus is and therefore they will succeed in their field of attraction or
attention.

Shatabhisha/ Chathayam
We shall now start with the 24th star called Chathayam in malayalam.
As the name suggests consisting of 100 stars, this has a resemblance of a camel. It belongs

This star can be seen as a cluster in the shape of a camel in the month of October after

This star of chathayam is a bit special star. It is ruled by the planet Rahu. Rahu is supposed
to show diplomacy and we can see this in the nature of chathayam people. They are highly
diplomatic and therefore cannot be fully trusted (of course we have to look at all other
factors in the horoscope too for the same). They are generally slow working (slowly picking
up things - even if it is walking or eating, they generally do it very slowly). A good appetite
for food and they also like tasty food (have a taste for food). Tough to predict as to how
they will behave or react, one should be careful while interacting with them. Though they
are helpful most of the times, they are not really helpful to others.
They are smart, bold, cunning - hence well suited for worldly jobs. But they are generally
not suited for spirituality due to their unique characteristics (where they tilt to being worldly
rather than spiritual). Lastly they generally live a very long life.

Muhurtha – Electional Astrology - VI
The planets and the relation with the stars or constellations forms the basis of the entire
predictive astrology and of muhurtha. The significance and the effects of the constellations
in muhurtha play a key role. Each star has its say in auspicious and inauspicious indications.
The movements of the planets are also measured against or in the background of
constellations; hence special place is given to constellations in setting a muhurtha.
Rohini, Uttara, Uttarashada and Uttarabhadra are fixed constellations and they are
favourable for coronations, laying foundations of cities, sowing operations, planting trees
and other permanent things.
Chitta, anuradha, mrigasira, revati are soft constellations. They are good for wearing new
apparel, learning dancing, music and fine arts, sexual union and performance of auspicious
ceremonies.
Aswini, pushya, hasta and abhijit are light constellations and they can be selected for
putting ornament, pleasures and sports, administering medicines, starting industries and
undertaking travels.
Moola, Jyestha, aridra and aslesha are sharp in nature and they are favourable for
incantations, invoking spirits, for imprisonment, murders and separation of friends.
Sravana, dhanistha, satabhisha, punarvasu and swati are movable stars and they are
auspicious for acquiring vehicles, for gardening and for going on procession.
Pubba, poorvashada and poorvabhadhra, bharani and makha are dreadful stars and they
are suitable for nefarious schemes, poisoning, deceit, imprisonment, setting fire and other
evil deeds.
Krittika and visakha are mixed constellations and during their influence work of day to day
importance can be undertaken.
Beginning of third quarter of dhanista and ending with last part of revati, the time is held to
be suitable for any kind of auspicious work. This comes under the special name of nakshatra
panchaka. On should avoid travelling south during this time, house repairing or renovation,
collecting fuel and cattle fodder or acquiring cots and beds.
Out of the 28 constellations, pushya the 8th star has a special significance. It neutralizes all
doshas arising out of number of adverse combinations.

It’s said that if there are unfavourable combinations in a birth chart and the birth star of the
person is also not favourable, then all the evils will be neutralized by star pushya. It is
capable of removing all evils from an election chart.
But inspite of its benefic nature to neutralize the evils, it is not considered auspicious for
purposes of marriage.
Bad and good are two sides of a coin. We cannot eliminate bad from the world. So to choose
a muhurtha which has no bad factors is very very rare. The probability of all factors we
consider for choosing a muhurtha, to be perfect and completely good is very very rare. Also
the urgency of doing the action which cannot wait for proper muhurtha has to be adressed.
So the astrologer has to pick up a date when the good overweighs the bad effects.
There are 21 evils we need to consider which should be avoided as inauspicious for any
work. Let’s see in brief
1. Panchanga suddhi: As we have seen before, panchanga means tithi, vara, nakshatra,
yoga and karana. All these should be auspicious. With respect to tithi 4th, 6th, 8th,
12th, 14th and full and new moon days should be avoided. With respect to vara,
Thursday and Friday are held auspicious for all works. Tuesday is to be avoided for
all works, except when it’s the 10th, 12th or 16th day of the child’s birth when the
child’s namakarana may be performed. With respect to stars bharani and krittika
should be avoided for all auspicious works. As they are ruled by yama and agni
respectively. In urgent cases of the lagna is fortified then the evil of the nakshatra
can get neutralized. The last parts of Alesha, Jyesta and revati should be avoided.
Coming to yoga 6th atiganda, 9th soola, 10th ganda, 17th vyatipata and 27th vydhruti
should be avoided. With respect karana, one should choose appropriate karana
based on the work to be done. Bava is auspicious for starting permanent works,
thaithula is propitious for marriage. Bhadra is unfit for any good work, but good for
violent and cruel deeds. For getting into initiation into kshudra mantras sakuni
karana is propitious.
Therefore, panchanga suddhi means selection of a good day, a good weekday, a good
nakshatra, a good yoga and karana.

2. Surya Sankarana: This happens due to the sun moving from one zodiacal sign to
another. When sun is about to leave one sign and enter another sign, that time is
not auspicious for any work as there will be some disturbances in solar forces. But
such time is said to be good for initiation into mantras, for meditation and for
performing religious rites, which will help to purify the atmosphere and also our
mental currents. Sun takes 16 ghatis i.e 6hrs 24 mins for exiting and entering into
another sign. This time should be rejected for any works.
3. Karthari Dosa: The word karthari means scissors. If there are evil planets on either
side of lagna, then it’s called karthari dosa. It causes bad effects and hence such
combination should be avoided, for good works.
4. Shashtashta Riphagatha Chandra Dosha: When the moon is located in the 6th, 8th or
12th houses from the lagna rising in an election chart, this dosa happens. This has to
be avoided in all works.
5. Sagraha Chandra Dosha: The moon’s association with any other planet, benefic or
malefic, should be avoided. This injunction is specially avoided in case of marriages.
6. Udayasta Suddhi: The lagna and the seventh should be strong. The lagna should be
occupied by its own lord and the navamsa lagna by its own lord or the lagna lord
should aspect the navamsa lagna lord. The lagna lord and seventh lord should be
well disposed and should be in good strength, especially for marriage.
7. Durmuhurtha: There are 30 muhurtas in a day which spans for 24 hrs. Each muhurta
has 2 ghatis i.e 48 mins. There are 15 diurnal muhurthas and 15 nocturnal
muhurthas. The 1st, 2nd, 4th 10th, 11th, 12th and 15th are inauspicious while in
nocturnal muhurthas 1st, 2nd, 6th and 7th are inauspicious. Here the day and night
duration is taken as equal.
Sunday coinciding with the 14th lunar day called (Aryama), Monday the 8th (vidhi) and 12th
(naktanchara), Tuesday the 4th (pitru) and the 11th (vahni), Wednesday(Abhijit), Thursday
the 12th (naktanchara) and 13th (Varuna), Friday the 4th (Pitru) and the 8th (Vidhi) and
Saturday and 1st Rudra and the 2nd (Ahi) Should be avoided as inauspicious.

Navamsa Analysis - III
To determine the Raja Yogas present in a birth chart, Navamsa chart should also be
considered for the purpose. In this edition let’s see how navamsa influences the raja yogas
in a chart.
As mentioned in saravalivol 2 chapter 35
Sloka 6: If at the birth time, the ascendant or the moon is in vargottama and aspected by 5
planets other than the moon, one will become a king inspite of taking birth in a mean
family.
Chart 1: Aurangazeb
The ascendant is in vargottama and we see that lagna is aspected by three planets. Saturn
and mars aspect lagna and Jupiter is in lagna. This is the chart of aurangazeb the king of
Mughal empire.
Jyothisha Prakaasham Kanya (Jaya)

28
Sloka 28: If the native has three to four benefics in vargottamamsa, then the person will
become a king. These planets should be in angle, not be weak and have no malefic aspects.
Chart 2: Emperor Nero
Analysis: This is the chart of an emperor. As we see Saturn, mars and sun are in
vargottamamsa. Though the planets are not fully benefics for this chart, it does give the
yoga of becoming an emperor.
In chart 1 also we see that there are planets in vargottamamsa, which lead to the person to
rule kingdoms.
Sloka 43: If all the planets at the time of birth be in their own rasis and friendly navamsas,
the subject will become a king.
Jyothisha Prakaasham Kanya (Jaya)

29
Sloka 49: If six planets simultaneously occupy their exaltation signs and also their own
navamsas, the native will become an emperor comparable to yayati, sagara and vena.
Chart 3: Swami Vidyaranya
Analysis: There are two planets which are exalted i.e sun and venus. Jupiter and moon are
in their own houses. Sun is in its own navamsa.
Thus we see that the horoscope satisfies most of the conditions. Swami vidyaranya was a
great scholar, was a ruler as well as a sanyaasi.
Sloka 56: If the moon occupy the leonavamsa and all other benefic planets are devoid of
malefic aspects and are angular to the lagna, the native will become a ruler endowed with
elephants.
Jyothisha Prakaasham Kanya (Jaya)
Vetti yah vedaangam sa aapnothi paramam padam

30
Sloka 59: If the moon occupies vargottamanavamsa or is in cancer navamsa and is
aspected by a strong planet, while the ascending sign is free from all malefic occupations,
the native will become an emperor endowed with physical strength.
Sloka 74: one, two or three planets of mercury, Jupiter, venus and moon occupying the 9th
house with strength and in aspect to friendly planet, the native will be a king akin to god.
Chart 4: AMMA
Analysis:We see that moon is in the 9th house. Jupiter also aspects moon. This is the chart
of RamanaMaharshi who is known all over the world as a realized soul. All his sishyas
worship him as god himself.

31
Sloka 164: If mars is in ashwini, anuradha or dhanista a raja yoga is formed. The planets
should also be in the vargottamanavamsa or in exaltation rasi.
Chapter 39
Sloka 3: The rajayogas in a horoscope are only namesake if the moon is weak and and is in
the last navamsa of a movable sign or in the 8thnavamsa of a fixed sign or in the
1stnavamsa of a fixed sign.
Chapter 40
Sloka 17: If the ascendant lord of navamsa is strong then the years contributed will equal
the navamsa past. If however the lagna lord is stronger, then the rasis past up to
lagna(counted from aries) will be number of years.
Chapter 45
Sloka22: If a planet is in its exaltation navamsa, the good effects of the planet will be full. If
it’s in its own navamsa, it will give results equal to its placement in rasi. If it’s in debilitation
or in enemy house then the effects will be quite little. If it’s in the house of a friend, then
moderate results will come to pass.

Chapter 46
Sloka 14: When venus and Saturn are in mutual aspect in the case of birth in Taurus or
libra ascendant with Saturn navamsa, the female concerned burnt with sexual desire will
unite with another woman playing the role of a male. Venus and Saturn should
simultaneously be in exchange in navamsas owned by them.
Sloka 20: If the 7th house falls in the navamsa of mars and be in aspect to the moon, the
female will have a diseased vagina. A navamsa of venus denotes a fortunate female who
will be dear to her husband.
Sloka 27: If the malefics are in 8th house, it indicates widowhood. This will occur in the dasa
period of the lord of the navamsa occupied by the 8th lord. A benefic in the 2nd will however
cause the death of a female in this yoga, instead of widowhood.
Chapter 51, Sloka 20 to 28

Yogas for travel We come across many people in various walks of life who are constantly travelling in their
lives due to professional and personal reasons. They hate to travel and would like to settle
at a place, but are forced to travel. We also come across people who would love to travel or
want to travel and they try all means and ways to do so and they are not being able to.
They are both long and short distance travels.
There are many yogas which indicate travel in a person’s life. Chatursagara yoga is one the
prime yogas which helps one to travel far and wide. Planets occupying the kendras make
ones a wanderer. Such people can be considered as globe trotters or wanderers.
Apart from this if the lagna lord is in chara and is aspected by a planet in chara also the
person will be settling down abroad. There are two other yogas which cause a person to
travel a lot called Sakata yoga and sadaasanchara yoga.
Sadaasanchara yoga is formed when the lagna lordor lagna must be in a movable sign. The
native will almost always be a wanderer. This is common in horoscopes of travelling agents,
diplomats and globe trotters. If both lagna and the navamsalagna are in movable signs, the
subject would hardly confine himself to any particular place, he will always be moving
around.
Sakata yoga is formed by Jupiter and moon. When moon is placed in 6th, 8th or 12th
positions from Jupiter in a natives chart it gives rise to the yoga. Jupiter stands for
prosperity, finances and fortune. Moon stands for mind, happiness and travels. Moon in
dusthanas from Jupiter leads to obstructions, hurdles and hardships in life. People having
this yoga are said to suffer poverty and are stubborn and be less fortunate.
We shall see few examples of these yogas. Let’s begin with sadasanchara yoga with some
examples.

Chart 1
Analysis: The lagna lord is venus in the above chart and is in mesha, which is a movable
sign. Lagna lord is also in the 12th house. The navamsalagna is cancer. Cancer is a movable
sign. So both the lagna lord as well as navamsalagna are in movable signs. Thus the native
has sadasanchaara yoga. Moon is not in a dusthana from Jupiter. Hence the sakata yoga is
not present in the chart.
The native has been on move and always away from home. Education was far away from
home and involved constant travel. Even job was in overseas. Even when abroad, the native
moved to various places very frequently. Native is restless in nature and cannot confine
himself to a house for a long time, but keeps wandering around. Even being at job places he
makes frequent visits home. So he has frequentlyboth short and long journeys in life.

Chart 2
Analysis:Lagna lord is Saturn and is a movable sign libra. Even the lagna is in a movable
sign. The navamsalagna is Taurus and is not a movable sign. Thus the sadasanchara yoga is
applicable. This is the chart of Jiddu Krishnamurthy. The native of the chart was born in
india. He was separated from his parents at an early age. He was adopted by the
theosophical society and had to go to various places on account of it. He was educated at
various places and was sent abroad. He travelled many continents to spread the message of
theosophical society.
Thus he was a wanderer, a globe trotter as a preacher of hindu philosophy to the west. The
yoga present in the chart suits him the best, for the way of life he lead. He had long
journeys, taking him far away from the place of residence.

Chart 3
Analysis: Lagna is libra which is a movable sign in the above chart. The lagna lord venus is
also in libra in a movable sign. The navamsalagna for this chart is aries, which is also a
movable sign. Thus the native of this chart has sadasanchara yoga.
Native of this yoga, has constant long and short distance travels. Native has frequent
travels. In many ways the lagna, lagna lord and navamsalagna are all in movable sign,
making it impossible for the native to stay at one place for long. Native is a globe trotter
and wanderer. Both for personal and professional reasons the native travels a lot. Thus this
yoga is well suited for this chart.
Till now we have seen few examples of sadasanchaara yoga. Now we shall see few more
examples for sakata yoga.

Chart 4
Analysis: The above chart is of AMMA. We see that from Jupiter the moon is in the 12th
house, which is a dusthana. Thus sakata yoga is available in the chart.
AMMA lived in a small hut on the coast of Arabian sea. AMMA was born in a fisherman’s
family. Thus we see that life was full of difficulties from childhood. AMMA’s mother
damayanthiamma, could not understand the higher spiritual states of AMMA and would beat
her and scold AMMA everyday. Thus AMMA went through a tough childhood, where no one
understood AMMA. Though AMMA faced all troubles from people around, AMMA was
stubborn and do what was right. For this also AMMA received beating from
damayanthiamma. AMMA didn’t have any funds or money to start ashram. AMMA didn’t
even land etc for the same. Everything started in a hut given by AMMA’s father sugunachan.
Now as well AMMA doesn’t claim any money of the trust and leads a simple life. AMMA faces
many challenges from devotees and disciples of AMMA constantly. With lot of allegations
also made against AMMA, AMMA bravely stands against all odds in every phase of life. Thus
we see all the effects of sakata yoga in this chart.

People with sakata yoga, also are said to travel a lot. AMMA travels far and wide. For whole
year AMMA travels to US twice and Europe once. AMMA travels to Australia, Singapore and
tours all over India. All these travels are due to sakata yoga as well.
Chart 5
Analysis: Native of this chart is my younger brother who works in US now. He was away
from home for most part of his life. His studies in india and abroad has always kept him
away from home. As part of his professional life as well he stays away from the family.
He would travel from childhood, for his studies and entrances and coaching etc. He is a
person who also likes to travel places. Moon is in the 12th from Jupiter and it forms sakata
yoga. He struggled a lot in US, with respect to financial matters. Sudden set backs in life he
had faced. While studying in US, getting a scholarship was a tedious task and he would
struggle to make ends meet by studying and earning there. With respect to job as well he
faced lot of misfortunes though he is very capable. He was unlucky in many situations. He

always had good inflow and outflow with respect to finances. Now also life is a struggle for
him in US, with respect to job and finances.
Thus we see the sakata yoga working all fine in this horoscope.
Chart 6
Analysis:In the above chart we see that moon is in the 8th house from Jupiter. Thus moon
is located in a dusthana from Jupiter and forms sakata yoga for this chart.
The native of this chart has gone through lot of hardships in life and faced many challenges.
Life threatening scenarios also the native had to go through, due to this yoga. Frequent
travels are also seen in the native’s life.

Analysis:This is chart of Osho. He faced lot of obstacles from his disciples. He was in midst
of lot of controversies. He had to face ban of some countries as well. People around him
posed as an obstacle to him. They caused lot of trouble and brought him disgrace. He got
bad name due to all his followers. Twenty one countries denied him entry causing him to
travel a lot as well.
As we see from Jupiter moon is located in the 6th house, this lead to sakata yoga. So there
were times when he faced lot of oppositions from people around. He travelled all around the
world and established many centers. He gave his talks by visiting many countries and
continents. Thus sakata yoga also gave him lot of travel as a preacher and philosopher.
Thus we see that sakata yoga and sadasanchara yoga has one feature in common, which is
that people having these yogas will travel a lot, with and without purpose.

Horoscope Analysis
Mandolin Srinivas
Mandolin srinivas was a child prodigy who brought the instrument called mandolin into
limelight. He was born to parents who were in musicians family. He picked the nusances of
the instrument very early and surprised all people and left them stunned with his
performances.
He is one of the few musicians whose name is followed by the instrument name. He
introduced the instrument mandolin to the carnatic music world. Until then it was known as
or recognized as a western musical instrument, similar to guitar.
Uppalapu srinivas also knows as U.sreenivas brought out this wonderful electric western
instrument and also made necessary modifications to the instrument, like using five strings
instead of eight strings, to suit carnatic music.

Venus is with malefics Saturn and rahu and is afflicted. 7th house has 8th lord in it. 7thlord is
in 2nd house. This is not good for the natives’ relationships. As venus is exalted he got into
marriage. But venus afflicted with Saturn and rahu, has created problems in his family
life.Mars aspects the 7th house. This creates conflicts with partner.Venus is also the 6th lord.
So partner will be like an enemy to the native. The 3rd lord Saturn, which is malefic is with
6th lord venus, due to which there were troubles in the married life.
Saturn and mars aspect the 6th house from lagna, which is the cause of the liver problem.

Amala yoga is formed in the chart, both from lagna and moon. From lagna benefic Jupiter is
in the 10th house. From moon, benefic venus is in the 10th house with malefic Saturn. Thus
amala yoga is present to some extent. This is the reason for his name and fame from very
young age. He was recognized and received well in the world of music. He established a
special place for himself in the field of music. He had worldwide recognition and fame.

partner. This is what happened. Mandi in lagna also gives a short span of life. Saturn is in
Kendra with benefics, 8th lord moon is in Kendra, lagna lord Jupiter is also in Kendra. These
factors are favourable for long life, but mandi in lagna gave him a short span of life of 45
years.
It was ketu and venusdasha which gave him liver problems and ultimately took his life. Ketu
is in house of mercury and is with Jupiter. Mandi is in the house of Jupiter. So Jupiter could
have given life threatening problems. Association of ketu with Jupiter, enhances ketu to give
such effects. Venus is the 6th lord and enemy of ketu. Hence ketu and venusdasa took his
