From Father Mark Mertes, Pastor …

I charge you…..proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient….encourage through all patience and teaching. (2 Timothy 4.2)

How do we proclaim the word? Mostly by our ac-tions! St. Paul is reminding Timothy of the power of the sacred scriptures, how they are useful for teaching and for correction. Paul exhorts the young Timothy to fearlessly announce what he has learned. My guess is that those who were hearing Timothy speak were mostly converted by the manner of his life. I imagine they were con-vinced of the truth of what he was saying by the Truth they saw him live. They saw how good this young man was and therefore concluded that his God must be really Good. In our day and age when so many around us do not actively partici-pate in a church, WE might be the only church they ever go to! This is to say that their experi-ence of God’s Love will most likely happen through an everyday encounter with us, rather than in a formal religious setting. Let us deepen our roots of prayer and scripture study; let us practice respect for life from its natural beginning to natural end; let us support one another in pray-er and action. In short, let us proclaim the Word!

Scripture Readings for Week of October 21-27 Mon/Lun: Romans 4:20-25; Luke 12:13-21 Tue/Mar: Romans 5:12, 15b, 17-19, 20b-21; Luke 12:35-38 Wed/Mie: Romans 6:12-18; Luke 12:39-48 Thur/Jue: Romans 6:19-23; Luke 12:49-53 Fri/Vie: Romans 7:18-25a; Luke 12:54-59 Sat/Sab: Romans 8:1-11; Luke 13:1-9 Sun/Dom: Sirach 35:12-14, 16-18; 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18; Luke 18:9-14

Stewardship and Today’s Readings Jesus is very clear about the necessity to “pray always without becoming weary.” Jesus probably didn’t mean we should always be on our knees with our eyes closed in prayer; honestly, prayer in any form is not always easy. We may feel discour-aged in prayer, because we have a hard time see-ing or understanding God’s response. Often, we use prayer as a last resort in times of trouble IN-STEAD of our first and finest resource. Prayer should be the core of our faith lives, and it should be the starting point in our lives of stewardship. Prayer gives us the chance to reflect on the bless-ings we have received and to respond with grati-tude by sharing those blessings. *Commitment Weekend is a few weeks away! Our parish continues to be BLESSED with the generosity of your time, talent, and treasure. Your support allows us to share God’s message with the world. Thank you for your discipleship!

This is National Vocation Awareness Week

God calls each of us to holiness through a voca-tion to marriage, priesthood, consecrated religious life, or the heroic single life. The most important thing we can do is take the time to seriously pray, discern, and respond generously to the vocation God calls us. Only in choosing to follow God’s will for our life, will we be most fulfilled. As the Body of Christ, we have shared responsibility to help oth-ers come to know and say “yes” to God’s will for them. National Vocation Awareness Week is a time set apart by the Church to remind us all of our very important role in supporting a person’s dis-cernment. We need to help those around us to fol-low Jesus, but also sometimes share what we see in them. If you know a young person who exhibits the qualities and character you see in priests or religious, tell them so and that you’ll pray for them. Your sincerity and confirmation may help them ex-plore their vocation. Although God is best heard in silence, we must remember that God can call us to be that voice and encouragement for someone!
