Our influence is an essential element for

preserving others from Satan’s lies.

A group of believers together is a light set on top of a hill that

cannot be hid.

Have you ever asked yourself, “What can I possibly do on such a big campus, city, or world?” Christ reveals to us that we can impact and change the world by our influence. In verse thirteen, Christ gives a picture of what the life of a Christian should be like using a very common mineral. He uses the illustration of salt. Salt is the oldest method of preserving food. Salt is used to preserve from rot, bacteria, and decay. It is an essential nutrient for human life that is readily available. Salt preserves food by absorbing water from cells making the environment too dry to support harmful mold or bacteria. Salt has a specific purpose which is to flavor or preserve.

We have a warning. Christ deals more in this verse with the salt not serving its purpose. He asks, “but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted?” Lost its savour means to become dull or sluggish. If the salt has lost its ability to influence, preserve, or

to provide the light of the truth so all those in the world can see the truth clearly. There are so many forces fighting to cover up God and truth. It is our purpose to reveal this to all the world so brightly that they can see it clearly and understand it. attitudes, and all manner of life. These are our influencing agents. These should visible for all people to see. If we let our light shine it will be seen. It will influence others. The end result of our influence is to lead people to know there is a God in Heaven, to call upon Jesus Christ as their Saviour, to understand and live by the truth of the scriptures, and ultimately glorify God. We must ask ourselves if are we fulfilling our God given purpose in this life to influence others. Are people drawn to Jesus Christ by what they see in your life? Just how Influential are you?

flavor it is good for nothing but to be thrown out on the ground. Christians are the salt of the earth. Their purpose is to preserve others from the decay of the darkness of this world. A Christian’s influence is God’s way to impact the world. If we as Christians loose our ability to fulfill our God given purpose we are good for nothing. We are then just taking up and wasting space. If you are a believer you have a purpose in this life. You were created to influence others for God. You were created to keep others from rot and decay which leads them to wasting away in the ways of this world.

In verses fourteen through sixteen, Christ uses light as another illustration of our ability to influence. Light is a natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things visible. Light is intended to illuminate and give light to others. It is best seen in darkness. Christ says that believers are the light of the world. He then talks about, “a city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” What is this city? It is a group of believers all giving off light. You cannot hide the effects of this light. The city on a hill represents a home, church, or any group of believers. Christ deals with what we are not suppose to do with light. If we cover up light it defeats the purpose of the light. The real purpose of light is to provide light to all those around so they can see clearly. Believers are
