Reports from the Office
Nexus Cook
Vice-President of External Affairs
TSG has been working very hard thissemester on many different projects andinitiatives focused on enhancing theUniversity and your overall Templeexperience. As Vice President ofExternal Affairs, my duties require me tobe the liaison between the student bodyand administration as well as the liaisonbetween the student body and the
community.
This semester, one of my main focuseswill be on the relationship betweenTemple students living off campus andthe local community residents. Therehave been many issues surrounding off-campus living this past year and I hope totackle those problems with the help ofCampus Safety. I have scheduled a seriesof town hall meetings, the first being onMarch 18th, 2009 in room 200b from7:30 to 9:00 pm. The main goal of thesemeetings will be to bridge the gap
between the students and the localresidents in hopes of fostering a greatersense of community and respect.
The month of March also is the kick offto Just Cause month! I highlyencourage everyone to participate in thevarious events that will be going onaround campus. It will be a very excitingmonth, so join a cause, start your ownor simply spread the word about thedifferent events we have planned!
Brief letters from the Vice-Presidents and the Senate President
Farzad Firoz
Vice-President of Services
This semester I have been working on
three projects. First, I am continuing the
flag proposal from last year. The flag
proposal is a project to put install flags of
the 160 countries from which the Temple
Student Body is represented. Each year
there will be 40 flags put up in the student
center atrium, and the flags will be changed
every year for four years, therefore astudent will be able to see all 160 flags in a
college career. The second project that I
am working on is proving a weekly bus
service from campus to South Philadelphia
for students to do grocery shopping. The
buses take students from the Student
Center to Mifflin St, where Target,
ShopRite and Marshall are located. The
last service, which has already happened,
was the Housing and Financial Aid Forum.
The forum provided the students aresource to talk to landlords about
housing and what to look for in off campus
housing. While the financial aid forum
provided students a resource to help
complete the FAFSA as well as to gather
information about the many types of loans
available to them. Currently, I am hoping
to complete the flag proposal by the end
of the semester and continue the bus
service until the end of the semester.
Jeff Dempsey
Senate President
The Senate is working to tackle issues
of the individual schools/colleges and
the University as a whole. Right off the
bat the Senate formed an ad-hoc
committee that is continuing its
investigation into academic advising
Another early project was to bring a
bike share service to the University
Towards the end of the semester thesenate heard from representatives of
TAUP, AFSCME, and Temple University
to determine whether or not support
would be formally given to those
unions. At the start of the second
semester the senate is working to take
on wide scale allocations/appropriations
reform. They are also working to aid
students affected by the Yorktown
situation, making a series of campus
safety videos, tabling within theirschools, and working to appoint the
most qualified people to lead the
student body.

Hello everyone.
This year has been an exciting one
with a number of projects. My
biggest one is "Just Cause" month
which is a joint effort with Main
Campus Program Board to promote
philanthropy and community service
throughout the university. It is
focused on the studentorganizations and we're hoping that
it will encourage other students to
get involved as well.
We are also working to help
celebrate the 125th Anniversary of
Temple. Our historian Jarae Hines is
putting together a Temple Creed,
which is something that the entire
university campus will be able toidentify with. We want to help
create an identity for all Temple
Owls, and we're hoping this is the
first step towards achieving that.
Most recently, we teamed up with
the Penn State Student Government
to oppose Governor Ed Rendell's
Tuition Relief Act, which would
provide up to $7600 to a student
in tuition aid if your family's
income was less than $100,000.
However, Temple University,
Penn State, Lincoln University,
and University of Pittsburgh were
excluded from this plan because
we're state-affiliated universities
rather than state schools. We had
a rally and sent out petitions to the
Governor and to state officials to
ask them to reconsider and give
our students financial aid.
TSG has been working hard and is
at the forefront of working on
student issues. We continue to
work on the issues that are
pressing to the Temple Studentbody.
If you want to keep up with what
TSG is working on or would like
to apply for a position, please visit
www.temple.edu/tsg or join our
Facebook group: Temple Student
Government.
A Letter from thePresident
Never doubt the difference that you alonecan make Nadine Mompremier
Each day we are challenged to do more and the JustCause Campaign is designed to encourage students to
want to do more and to do more. Its amazing thedifference one action can make. If we can start now, build that involvement, and build community, imagine
the world that we could create.

Pisces -
Your
battering-
ram style
approach to
problem
solving does have its drawbacks, however it
certainly will provide exciting anecdotes to
spice up your autobiography, or your book
on 'winning management techniques'.
Aries - Star crossed lovers are set to bring
a Shakespearean twist to your love life this
month, beware window ledges or porches
in all of their forms - and hats with feathers
in them.
Taurus - A strange Harry Potter type
incident involving an owl with a message
attached to one of its legs will add a
moment of both extreme excitement andanguish as feathers fly like you have just
come across some kind of real life Tom and
Jerry animal fight. Read the message the
owl reluctantly gives you carefully. It wasn't
meant for you, but findseeskeepsies as they
say.
Gemini - In these credit crunch times
retailers are only too happy to accept less
than the price they are displaying to get a
sale, but to get this you must pretend that
you don't really want the thing you are
buying at all. The trick Saturn is keen to teach
this month is that for best results never ever
take 'no' for an answer. This month you will
also learn the hard way not to take 'the store
is closing at 9pm' for an answer either.
Cancer- Gladiatorial combat is highly
starred this month, either in the sword-and-
sandals bashing up another person sense orjust the watching it on television sense. In
either sense, probably best to avoid starchy
foods which will only slow you down, or
make you want to go to the toilet at the most
inconvenient of moments.
Leo - This might or might not be the best
month in a long while to take a huge risk. The
uncertainty is being caused by a small gale on
the upper mid side of Jupiter's lower eastern
flank which is set to blow for much of the
month. The best advice we can offer is to putoff life changing decisions until the wind clears
early in March.
Virgo - 'Hot and crispy' is a phrase you are
set to hear repeatedly this month. Pizzas,
fried chicken, even toast, are all particularly
indicated in your celestial charts.
Libra - As you sometimes pride yourself,
Libra are the know-it-all star sign. This month
Saturn is on side to give you free rein to
show off your intimate knowledge of loads of
stuff to people who just haven't got a clue.
Scorpio - 'Let them wait' will be your
motto this month. Keep to this and you wil
increase your accuracy ten fold, even
though your actual productivity will reduce
staggeringly. Don't worry, nobody will
notice.
Sagittarius - This month you will never be
more than 30 minutes away from a top hat
and tails musical rendition of 'Me and my
shadow'. Getting the dance steps right now
will pay dividends later.
Capricorn - Your fiery Capricorn temper
at the smallest of things is set to
increasingly blight your chances to get
anything done over the next few years.
Count slowly 1 to 10, trying to avoid any
added expletives into the count, and let
your rage pass.
Aquarius - All your internet bargain
hunting is set to come under the influence
of Neptune from the 5th after which time
bargains will literally drip from your
keyboard. Half-priced household goods,
DVDs, and other products too numerous
to mention will be priced so unbelievably
low. Broke? Don't worry - Saturn has a
surprise in store for you on the 20th!

President 1990 - 1991February 1963
In late February, the Student council really got to work on a resolution
that opposed the Temple University Law School no work ruling that
seemed to work against the students. The council invited the Law Dean
Benjamin Boyer to meeting to hear the four main points of oppositionpresented by the students.
1.) It was passed without proper consultation. 2.) It puts the
blame for a poor record on the student without considering
the possibility that the quality of instruction might be a
contributing factor. 3.) It works a hardship on male students
who may lose draft exemption. 4.) It applies standards to
students which are not applied to faculty, many of whom hold
outside jobs.
The resolution was one of the first times the council dealt with an issue
it really does not have anything to do with. This motion was believed
to set a precedent for Temple Student Council and went a long way in
improving its status on campus.
January - February Recap
After a well-deserved break TSGgot right back to work during itsfirst state of the campus for 2009.It featured a guest speaker,Anthony Wagner the Chief
Financial Officer, who fieldedseveral students questions rangingfrom the recessions effect onTemple to budget cuts.
In February, it seemed finances were still thetheme. TSG sponsored and hosted a rally at the Bell Toweropposing Governor Ed Rendells proposed Tuition Relief Act thatleft Temple out of the equation. Penn States Student Governmentand several local media outlets were in attendance.

Vision:
Temple University will initiate a new era of community
consciousness and active citizenship, leading students
everywhere in an effort to establish a global culture of
social service.
Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve. Youdon't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't haveto make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only needa heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.
