Match Reports

Men's 1's v Oxford Hawks 2's Saturday 10th November Drew 2 - 2

Miracle Worker I think it’s fair to say I’ve never really developed much of a connection to the Bible, nor any of the main protagonists. I’ve never found myself in a garden naked after eating an apple given to me by a snake. I’ve never seen a bush spontaneously combust. Whenever I have seen some burning vegetation, I’ve never heard a mysterious voice emerge from within. I don’t have any sons to sacrifice to God to test my loyalty. I’ve never had to lead any slaves from Egypt, never mind part the Red Sea to ensure safe crossing. All in all, I’ve regarded the actions of the many men (bloody patriarchy) in the Bible as unrelatable and distant to my simple existence in Willesden Green. Until last Saturday, when I suddenly understood the pain of one man’s fight to save humanity. I’m sure Noah thought he had it hard. Sure, the logistics of keeping lions, tigers and wolves on the same ship as zebra, gazelle and sheep would be challenging. And I’m sure he thought it rained a lot – but let’s not forget he was (probably) originally from somewhere in the Middle-East, and their concept of rain is slightly different to that of us wearisome Brits. If he had seen the clouds gathering around midday over Oxford, saw the light dissipate ominously, and felt the chilling North wind sweep in over the pavilion, I’m pretty confident he would have written the whole project off as a bad job. If he had looked round at the assembled faces at half time that were dripping with icy water and was tasked with explaining a change from the attacking 3-5-2 to a more secure 4-4-2, I reckon he would have taken the lions any day. But some of us are made of sterner stuff than 500 year old biblical heroes. And so it proved as the Men’s 1s dug deep to overturn an early 2-0 deficit to earn a respectable point away at a good Hawks side. It is always disappointing not to come away with three points, but the reversal in spirit and character shown from the capitulation last week was encouraging. We are clearly moving in the right direction. Talking of heroes on a biblical scale, spare a thought for Tom Akhurst. In the last minute of the game a potentially match-winning Hawks attack was brought to a sudden stop as he bravely rose to meet the crossed ball with a thumping header that would have made Wes Brown proud. What a man. Angel Ladies 1s Vs Amersham & Chalfont Saturday 10th November Lost 2-0

2 Should have Been None... On the day that The Spice Girls released tickets for their comeback tour (a date hotly awaited for by members of L1s), we travelled away to Amersham really really really wanting to build on last week's promising performance and come away with 3 points. After much squad discussion we decided that all we needed was positivity and to slow it down baby, to have some fun.

The match commenced and to be honest neither side really shone, but it was Amersham who took the lead (even much to their own surprise!) well into the first half when two of their forwards bundled the ball in at the right post after a massive helping hoof was missed. Sometimes taking is too easy but that's the way it is. Eastcote dusted themselves off and pushed out again and began to shape together some nice play pieces. At half time we agreed we had to free our minds of doubt and danger, we were very much still in the game and we could achieve it, we could achieve it. We set about the second half giving everything, this I swear. But then something shameful and inexplicable happened. Celery had complete control of a forward making a run along the base to the left post; the forward kind of gave up and gave the ball a half-hearted pat, and it quite literally tricked slowly towards me. I have absolutely no idea why, but I decided the ball was heading out of play over the base line, my angles, everything, all out of the window and wrong and I hopped over the ball to let it go... thus conceding the most bizarre, embarrassing and infuriating goal of my entire hockey career. Stood there feeling sad and low, I then had to commence an epic battle with my own head, the goal's memory saved as a reflection in my mind... The team pushed on however and were all out determined to salvage what we felt we deserved. Lots of lovely fluid play where we slammed it down the left, shook it to the right, and went round gave a sincere suggestion that at some point very soon, our goal flood gates will open, but on the day the ball just wouldn't cross the line. The worst part of the loss for us was that in a way; our opposition didn't actually score... one was gifted in a decision and the other I quite literally gave them! Couple that with frustrations at the other end of the pitch and we start to wonder will this deja vu never end? Never-the-less, the race is on to get out of the bottom, we've crossed the line so we're gonna have to turnaround. We can still remember how we used to be, so we need to swing it, shake it, move it, make it to get back to our old selves! Pooky Eagles v Amersham & Chalfont 5's Saturday 10th November Lost 0 - 2

Who's Zed? Zed's dead baby Zeds' dead! With a decent performance from little Zed it won't be long before he will eclipse his old man between the posts making some very good saves and only conceding to short corners, you can see with some game time and coaching he will get much better. Defensively we were no better or worse than previous games with Mikey, Graham Pile, Alan and Dicky being as consistent as always even with Dicky having steamed and wet glasses. In midfield we had a solid though erratic display in general. When we linked up as a group it was nice to watch though at times it was hard to tell which was more miserable the play or the weather.

The EastcoNet 5 17th November 2018

Up front was a little hit and miss! OK lots of hits and even more miss with no shots in the first half including a failed shirt corner against a kicking back keeper we all felt was unacceptable. Losing 2-0 at half time against an average opponent, the team knew they needed to do better. The rain was like some sort of magic elixir falling from the sky it even gave Sati and Suranga the ability to pass and when linking up with Ashley on the right wing the team were starting to get in to the other half of the pitch and create chances for our strikers which encouraged the rest of the midfield to get forward and support. With 4 or 5 short corners in the second half and a few open play chances only the frustration and over enthusiastic temperament stopped us from scoring. Touch of the match has to go to Dale who in a Lionel Messi sort of way managed to pretend to try and stop the ball but instead flicked it past his defender to set Anil on run down the wing. Although we all feel this was a game we should have won 0-2 was a fair result. Chris Men's 2's v Staines 2's Saturday 10th November Won 6 - 1

Cha-riot The 2nd XI went into this fixture knowing that they had to reverse the SWING of the pendulum back into the ways of the victorious. After their narrow defeat to Harrow they knew that a loss to Staines [no disrespect] was not acceptable. The fixture started all too familiarly for the home side with the momentum SWINGING into the favour of the visitors who were not playing like a side attempting to stave of relegation. It was not until mid-way through the 1st half that the deadlock was broken; the home defence unfortunately began SWINGING their sticks like novices which resulted in a mis-time trap and a present for the opposition forward 0-1. The game then descended into something reminiscent of the scene in the Walt Disney movie ‘Bedknobs & Broomsticks’, SWINGING back and forth. But just before the ½ time break Eastcote managed to carve out an opportunity and Fil DaCosta SWUNG his stick and connected sweetly 1-1. After a view choice words from the coach the team started the 2nd half in a more positive fashion. With the heavens opening up and both sides looking like contestants of a Wet T Shirt competition, the 2nds win the 1st penalty of the half. Up steps DoS, who SWINGS his stick connects with the ball, loss grip of his stick that ends up against the back fence 2-1. Another sortie from the home side this time finds the Mini Defanis free at the top of the D. With the goalkeeper racing out to prevent the shot Mini-Def roles/spins too his strong side and SWINGS his stick 3-1; opposition object claiming a foot was involved it no one was any the wiser due to Min-Def’s poker face the goal stands.

After some fine work down the home side’s right hand side Fi DaCosta SWINGS and unleashes a howitzer of a back hand shot, which the goalkeeper had covered until the Will H intervenes by SWINGING his stick and deflecting the ball in the roof of the net 4-1. With the 2nds now taking control of the game a further sortie finds Mini-Def free in the D, who SWINGS connects 5-1. Not wanting to be out done by the team’s new goal machine Fil DaCosta earns himself a brace SWINGING his stick and unleashing a tomahawk that loops over the goalkeeper 6-1. Game over, a job eventually well done by the SWINGERS that masquerade as the 2nds. SWING Low Sweet Chariot – Richard Thompson It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That SWING) – Duke Ellington Sultans of SWING – Dire Straits SWING Street – Barry Manilow SWING -Inxs Strawberry SWING – Coldplay Hollywood SWINGING – Kool and the Gang Hugh Heffner. Past Masters v Bromley & Beckenham Ravens Saturday 10th November Lost 1(1) - 4(3)

. . . another challenging away game A trip down to Bromley is always a challenging journey especially so when England are playing at Twickenham; so by bus, train and car we congregated at the Boys School. The regular stalwarts were augmented by the rare presence of our speedy winger Stevie who as ever proved he has lost not of his pace, tenacity or commitment. We were facing a strong Ravens side complete with a couple of subs so, it was going to be a hard afternoon. The opening quarter went well with the cunning Lloydy and speedy Stevie raiding down their flanks and Buddy in the middle trying to find space. Sukhi was pushed forward with “L” and Sardar in the middle who were more than holding their own and probing at the heart of the home defence. The game was evenly poised with a lot of the play in the middle and very few clear chances at either end until the home side managed to finally get into their rhythm and string a series of moves together. This released a player in space behind the PM defence who crossed beyond the keeper to an unmarked player at the back post to open the scoring. A period of pressure then ensued with Pali and Addy constantly engaged out wide leaving Vijay and Gavin slightly outnumbered in the centre and having to hold off a very quick Raven CF plus some onrushing mid-fielders. Several short corners came and went with the defence coping well. But then another incisive drive from the middle enabled their CF to be found unmarked in the D and despite a somewhat desperate dive from Gavin and Dave he managed to find the bottom corner. The pressure was now relentless and 2 mins later a 3rd goal was concede from a short after the initial shot had been well saved.

The EastcoNet 6 17th November 2018

Somehow our resilience kicked in and we again managed to build more control and get back in the game, and with 1 min to go to half time, the ever productive “L” found Buddy in the D in a bit of space for a change and he managed to elude his last defender and fire extravagantly into the net to pull one back. The 2nd half was very even with the PMs making a real contest of it, albeit not having the lion’s share of possession, but still creating half chances in the opposition D with Gavin pushing into the midfield to bolster the tireless running of Sukhi, “L” and Sardar. A couple of shorts for us were opportunities to reduce the deficit but we could never relax at the back as their forwards had real pace and movement. The home team got a final short at the death and from the 2nd or 3rd phase managed to squeeze the ball free and over the line. This was always going to be a difficult fixture against a very well balanced and talented Ravens team but the PMs stuck to it throughout, with the defence being particularly busy, and with a bit of luck may have got a point. So to MotM and a case could be made for any of the defence but for his tireless running, tenacity and overall contribution it goes to “L”. “Màlmand” Men's O50s v Spencer Sunday 11th November Lost 2(2) - 4(1)

. . . a game of 2 halves The O50s welcomed Spencer to Alec Reid on a very busy day for our cup teams. The side had a very youthful feel to it which boded well as long as we could gel and work out a formation that suited us. Against us was a very experienced and wily Spencer team featuring a few star names and very few weaknesses so a tough game in prospect. The opening period was as ever a time to settle and Monty was anchored in central midfield to give us a decent pivot point and we quickly started to exploit our superior pace down the left where Bonesy and Harry had the beating of their markers and could gain good yardage whenever freed by either a ball from the back from Rich and Gavin or from the middle from Monty. This gave us a focus on which to attack but also a focus for their defence so it was no surprise when our opener came from a move down the other side involving Ian, Sardar and Selwyn. The ball finally found “L” in the D who wriggled past a final defender and from a very tight angle beat the keeper high to his left. This spurred the O50s on and Woodie pushed Monty forward further to create more pressure on their midfield. Monty allowed a hard pass from the back to go through to “L” on the edge of the D who evaded his marker with a neat move to his right and although his 1st shot was saved by their keeper followed up to score and double his tally. We weren’t having it all our way though and Spencer had a period 10mins before the end where they were awarded 5 shorts in a row – all were well defended with Rich, Gavin, Ian, Sardar and Dave all proving resilient. Having survived this we again used our speed down the left to threaten Spencer once more and did come close at

the far post. Right at the end of the half Spencer were awarded with their 10th short and, being forced to change one of our backline, we were not quite as compact and conceded a scrappy goal. So going in to the 2nd half 1 goal to the good was a great performance but could we repeat it for another 35 mins, you felt the next goal would be key, and unfortunately this went to the visitors who had switched tactics over half time and decided not to try beating the keeper but play round him, which is always harder to defend. The 2nd Richard and Graham swapped on at half time giving us different options and fresher legs but we were now facing a side that was playing a more cerebral game and moving us around more – they created a free man in the D midway through the half to draw level. To try and regain or advantage we started to play further up the pitch leaving the inevitable holes behind. Spencer had added a couple more goals before the end but it was always a close contest up to the last whistle. Despite losing this was a promising performance from an O50s team which looked very balanced and capable of scoring goals, look out all those in the plate. “Màlmand” Ladies 4s v Chiswick 5s Saturday 10th November Won - 0

Two chips!!!!! With Chiswick a few above us in the league this was set to be a close game or not!!! Eastcote scored x4 goals x2 by Pam and x2 from Lesley in the first half. Laura/ Hannah/Sophie and Tess all working hard in midfield and putting some great balls in to the forwards. In the second half Chiswick came out all guns blazing, yet Eastcote defence managed to keep them from blotting our clean sheet. Unfortunately no further goals scored although we had several more chances- just couldn’t convert. Thanks to Katie, Lucy, Sophie and Jane. Great team play and another win. SB Ladies 2s Vs Winchmore Hill & Enfield Saturday 10th November Drew 2 - 2 We are top of the league, unbeaten, they are second from bottom on 4 points. We went 2-0 up by half time through ANOTHER Amy Sharman goal, soon followed by a nice sweep in from Alice. We were not playing well, but were glad to be 2-0. They got one back in the first minute of the second half They kept fighting, we sadly did not. A very lack-lustre below-par second half. We were very poor, and it came as no surprise that they equalized.

Dear All, Friday night sees Eastcote hosting the Junior Quicksticks Festival. We have had many of our young players volunteer to help through the evening with umpiring, organising and helping to run the event. Great to see so many volunteer to help and show case the club. Please remember to bring your cash for a ticket on Sunday for the Christmas party. We have had to limit numbers this year so please buy them early. Tickets will be on sale at both the Eastcote site and at St Helens from Sunday 18 November 9.30-10.30am. CASH only - £6 per ticket, £4 for siblings under 4 years. A reminder to all – if your child is in the U14s and above, please purchase a facemask if they are part of the defensive corners. Please contact your coach if you have any questions around your child requiring one. The club would like to thank Leo for helping out with umpiring over the weekend when we were so short. It was very appreciated. Hope you enjoyed it Leo? Finally, a thank you to all the coaches, players and parents who observed the minutes silence on Remembrance Sunday. Thanks, Jo

Boys U14 Development V West Herts Eastcote 6 - 0 West Herts All a tiny bit embarrassing really. I do the small talk thing with the opposition coaches at the start and ask them how they've been getting on. Pretty well comes the reply. So I ask if this is their strongest team and they reply yes, this is our only team. At about that point and for reasons I won't go into, it dawns on me that we will only have 10 players (they have 12). So I say to their coaches (plural), "Look, we've only got 10 I'm afraid. I'm not asking you to play with 10 but let's see how it goes and perhaps make adjustments if necessary". Oh yee of little faith! After the first quarter we are either one or two up - I can't quite remember. Things take another turn at this point and for more reasons that I won't go into, we are down to 9 players. We continue the game and still we don't concede. During the second quarter, one of our other players arrives taking us back to 10 players and we remain at 10 for the rest of the match. You probably get the rest. If you finish a game 6-0 up having played the whole match at least 1 player down then you must have done a good job. Sure, as it turned out they were weak and there is still much for us to work on but it really showed true guts, grit and steel and there was some absolutely stunning hockey thrown in with some wonderful team goals. I would say the team's best performance this season. Every performance was a positive one but a special mention should go to Adrian, called up from the U12s to stand between the posts. Did a brilliant job and kept a clean sheet. As I shook the hands of the umpires (plural), there was a slightly awkward atmosphere! Once again, excellently umpired by Chris B and superbly supported by Alessia - thank you both so much. Colin C

Girls Mini Tournament At Hampstead & Westminster Last week Hampstead & Westminster hosted a Girls U12 mini tournament which Eastcote took to teams to. Instead of creating an A and B team we decided to put out 2 balanced teams such has been the improvement across the board. Two teams entered 2 groups and did the club very proud!

Under 12 Girls Team 1 There were 4 teams in our group so we had 3 matches to play – 14 minutes 1 way. All the girls played well and linked up perfectly as a team. The team defended and attacked together putting their training into practice perfectly. The girls were in control in all matches. They did not allow their heads to drop when the opposition scored, instead they came out fighting. This team spirit and determination gave them the results they deserved. We won all our games H&W Blues 2-1 Chiswick A 3-0 Wayfarers 2-1 Well done to all the team – your coaches and parents are all very proud of you Squad – Dhanvi, Anna, Rhea, Mya, Lillia, Ella, Willow, Keya, Imogen Under 12's Girls - Team 2 Only 3 teams in this group, so these matches were played over a longer period. Two halves of 12 minutes gave the girls an inside into longer periods of play which the adapted to admirably. The girls were asked to put into practice what we do at training, enjoy and express themselves on the pitch and not worry about the result. Results: Eastcote 9 v 0 Chiswick Eastcote 3 v 0 West Hampstead What more can be said, the results speak for themselves, the girls played really well and demonstrated a killer instinct in the first match against Chiswick, where they were 4-0 up at half time and controlled the game throughout. There was lots of good passing, movement off the ball with the girls running off the ball and giving options thus being able to create chance after chance. Such was the control in this game our defence was not troubled, and the keeper did not have to make a save. 4 goals came from some very high-quality skill and passing with clinical finishing. High pressing led to several forced errors from the opposition and the girls were able to score from 2 of these turnovers via some good short corners. It was a pleasure to watch as the girls did not rest on their laurels and kept their hunger up to try and score more.

The EastcoNet 17 17th November 2018

The final game against West Hampstead was going to be a tougher proposition as both teams had won their opening games. The first 5 minutes were a cagey affair and then Eastcote managed to get the goal to put them one up. 2-0 up by half time and Eastcote were in control, working hard as WH were looking dangerous playing 2 high up, which kept our defenders on point and the next game was going to be crucial. At 2-0 our keeper Kaya was called into action, which kept our 2 goal advantage and then relief midway through the 2nd half as we heard the thud of the backboard making it 3-0. The girls saw the game out comfortably without any scares, great work from the defenders kept threats to a minimum and midfield running, and distribution led so some goals we were all proud of. Squad: Kaya, Sofia, Lily-Grace, Isha, Aanya, Olivia, Minnie, Ava and Isabella Well done to all the girls that formed two very strong teams and an excellent squad effort, we now all look forward to the next tournament which Eastcote are hosting!! Adrian, Claire, Nihal & Ashling. U12 Boys Tournament At Alec Reed The sun was out for the U12’s boys first home tournament at the Alec Reed Academy. Eastcote were represented by two teams- the Eastcote Hogs and Eastcote Boars with Sai kindly stepping in at the last minute to help out the Hogs. The Eastcote Hogs had a bit of an early wakeup call with their first match against Hampstead and Westminster Blues (the oppositions stronger team), battling hard but conceding the match with a final score of 0-3. They then found their feet and kept Hampstead and Westminster Whites to a 0-0 draw and then beat OMT’s 1-0 despite some great goalkeeping from Adrian who was on loan to OMT’s! Goals – Scuff(1) The Eastcote Boars were up against OMT’s first, winning their match comfortably with a 2-0 final score. They then faced Hampstead and Westminster Blues and as usual had a good battle with great hockey played by both the teams and good chances created at either end. Both goalies held their nerves however and the final score was 0-0. The Boars then faced Hampstead and Westminster Whites, played some great hockey/scored some cracking goals, with good link up play and a final score of 3-0. Goals - I believe were – Max(4) Arian(2) Vishnu(1) We halted the tournament midway and invited all of the boys, their coaches and parents to line up around the centre circle for the two minutes silence. The boys showed great decorum and the guns that could be clearly heard from RAF Northolt were a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by previous generations. The last game of the tournament was Eastcote Hogs vs Eastcote Boars with a sterling performance all round and great sportsmanship from both teams. Eastcote Boars finally won with a 2-0 score, but we were impressed by the boy’s commitment and the stamina shown running right to the last with tired legs! It was also impressive to see the boys putting into practise their recently acquired short corner skills and moving the ball at pace. The final tournament results were as follows: Eastcote Boars finished level with Hampstead and Westminster Blues – both teams were unbeaten with 10 points and a +7 goal difference Eastcote Hogs finished level with Hampstead and Westminster Whites – both with 4 points and a – 4 goal difference You can’t get much closer than that… and we continue our friendly rivalry with H&W! OMT’s were a little off the pace and didn’t manage to pick up any points this time. All in all it was a great tournament and one to remember. Leading on from with this, Sham and I would like to say how impressed we were with the boy’s behaviour both on and off the pitch. All players were polite, supportive of each other and friendly towards the opposition. All of our boys put in a great shift and I would like to say a special thank you to Sai who stepped up from the U10’s and did not look out of place for a moment! A big thank you also to Leo who kindly stepped in to umpire in place of Joe – you did a great job, much appreciated by all! … and as ever thank you to Chris Butler, Penny, Sham and Krish!

U14's Giants v Gerrards Cross. To avoid confusion, please note that our U14's Performance team have moved up into an U16's league and are now called Eastcote Giants! The aim of the move is to push and stretch our boys and the game on Sunday certainly did. As it was Max's 13th Birthday the previous day he was made Captain and it was when he completed the pre-match formalities by shaking hands with his counterpart, that my doubts really started to surface. The opposition captain was almost 2 foot taller, the name Giants was no longer humorous as our boys were considerably smaller! Both teams jointly observed a minute’s silence at the start of the game to recognise those that have given their lives during the World Wars and other conflicts. This was part of a national hockey initiative 'Hockey for Hero’s'. I found the first 20 minutes difficult and found it hard to relax, and I think the boys were the same. It took them time to adjust to having less space and time on the ball and found the game competitive. As they started to relax they began to move the ball confidently to each other and used the space intelligently, causing Gerrards Cross problems. We were improving but went a goal down. This did not phase the boys and if anything it pushed them on resulting in an equaliser and not long after we took the lead! At this stage of the game, Zahid our guest star / superstar Goalkeeper, borrowed from the real Eastcote U16's team started to direct and command our defensive unit, thank you! Another player who shone on Sunday was Ayuj who was moved into defence and had a great game. He kept it very simple by winning the ball and distributing. Towards the end the game got quite stretched with too much of a gap between the defence and midfield, I think there is only so much running those little legs can do! It was at this stage Gerrards Cross drew level. The final score was 2-2 and both sets of supporters praised both teams for a fantastic match. Things we learnt:

1. Zahid's communication from the goal line was outstanding. 2. Our Giants had to defend and proved they can. I have a feeling they are going to be doing a lot more in the

matches to come. 3. Moving into the U16's league was the right decision.

U10 Girls - Piggies March report We couldn't have been prouder of the way the girls played on Sunday. There was some outstanding play. The girls held their positions well and played the ball to each other with pace and precision. Eastcote’s first game was against H&W whites . As soon as the whistle went the girls sprung into action - it wasn’t long before we scored the first goal. 2 more followed quickly. Eastcote won 3-0. With no rest the girls were back on to face Ealing Leopards. The girls continued with their strong play and won 2-0. Our next opposition was Chiswick. They were a good team but still no match for the mighty Piggies. Victorious again 1-0. Finally, the girls had a match rest, so they could restore some energy. The rest worked wonders as they won the last match of the tournament 3-0. (Against Old C’s). A brilliant all-round performance. It was nice to see the girls put into practice what they have learnt at training. Erin, Annisa, Chloe, Paige, Lily, Ruby, Kiri, Millie.

U10's Girls - Piglets Match Report: The first tournament of the season for the Under 10's Girls. After Saturdays down pour, parents were put on alert in case of a waterlogged pitch and we were in danger of having a Sunday Sleep in!!! The rained ceased around 2am and come 7am there were blue skies and not a drop of rain. We were on!! It was going to be good to see where we were and see if we could implement Sunday’s training into practice. The focus was use what we learnt, enjoy ourselves and not worry about the results. Arriving early the excited piglets warmed up and were set to play 4, 10 min games.

1st game - 1-0 - a narrow defeat to a very well-disciplined H&W team, where we were under pressure from the whistle, lots of great tackling, last minute tackles and saves from the GK where we showed great defensive commitment and as a team got stuck in. 2nd game - 0-0 - against Ealing we got our 1st point, where we were unlucky not to score from the 2/3 opportunities we created. 3rd game - 1-0 A close game against H&W 2nd team., we went down to a late goal, again an evenly balanced game 4th game - 2-0 We fell to a 2-0 defeat against OC's who were again well drilled outfit. Freya, Katie, Phoebe, Julia, Lila, Gabriella, Maisie, Millie played really well and gave a very good account of themselves and were a credit to Eastcote Hockey Club.
