This portfolio presents a selection of works I created between 2006 – 2011. Although most of the products shown are concepts or prototypes, they are developed for production and will be made on commission. I would be pleased to answer further inquiries.

› glass

Working with the material glass is for me a way of relaxing from the normal design work. A counterweight for the mind.

It all happens in the workshops. I don’t even try any more to design glass, I just get inspired while working with the

glassblowers at Nuutajärvi.

Glass has a mind of its own, sometimes collaboration seems hopeless. That’s when I get even more determined to make it

work by trying to listen to the glass and the glassblowersmore closely.

avantoAvanto is the finnish word for an opening in the ice of a frozen lake. Like the crystal clear ice on a lake, Avanto unites the hard and soft, the material and immaterial. When Avanto is switched on it turns into a floatingobject of reflected light.

Page 7: Juri Karinen Works

The prototype of Avanto was manufactured in the traditional way of mouth blown glass into handmade wooden molds at the

glass workshop of Nuutajärvi, Finland.

dimensions: height 42 cm, diameter 45 cm

material: glass, clear and sandblasted

reflector tube: stainless steel

kaamosKaamos means in finnish the absent of the sun during the polarnight. Kaamos consists of the basic shapes, cylinder, cone and sphere. The lamp is specially designed for energy-saving lamps. The matte or coloured glass shade creates a gently glowing light.

dimensions: height 36,5 cm, diameter 30 cm

material: coloured glass, porcelain socket E27, textile cable

lamp: 16W energy-saving lamp

material: mouth blown glass, filigrana technique or clear

lamp: 2W led lamp or 25W bulb

valoValo is a “work in progress” and will be finished soon as a one-off. The design combines the construction of the older “Avanto” table lamp with a more reduced form.

dimensions: height 43 cm, diameter 45 cm

material: glass, coloured and clear, partly sandblasted

lamp: 50W halogen spot

triangle

Triangle is an exclusive way of storing firewood. It can alternatively be used as storage for magazines.

Made of 12 mm hardened glass and chromium plated steel. Flat package, assembling without tools.

› work in progressOne work is barely completed and there are already a couple of new ideas on my mind. The spread shows renderings for a bowl series I am working on at the moment. The bowl got its inspiration from round natural stones balancing on top of each other.

marcelThe “folding-lounge-chair” was created as a folding-chair, but without the characteristic look.

Marcel is designed with a completely new folding geometry, which includes the benefit of two open positions, one relaxed and one more upright. When folded, marcel is “stackable”. The chair could also be a weatherproof outdoor-furniture, where easy moving and storage is a benefit.

Prototype created for Vepsäläinen.

butterflyA chair which fits into various environments and meets different ways of usage. Modern polyester mesh fabrics could add to the versatility, by being weatherproof, tear, UV, fire and micro organism resistant. The extra cushions are easy to wash and give a more relaxed, indoor-furniture appeal. The chairs big dimensions create a sheltered, nest-like feeling.

lammasLammas (meaning sheep in finnish) is an easy chair with captivating softness Its size is fully grown and it is basically made of two big pillows cushioned around the supporting frame. In contrast to the softness is the foot construction which is bend from reinforcing bar.

flippA large sculptural sofa which comes to best effect at home or in public spaces. I like the idea of furniture not having front

or backsides, making it possible to place it anywhere in space, using it as room dividers and experiencing forms from

different angles.

kaaosKaaos is an abstract furniture study. It is made of only three parts, a rod, ball and connecting rubber ring. Its shape and size is always different, unique, resembling nature where identicalness does not exist. Kaaos could be used as a rack for short-time-storage of clothes.

moduliThe character of a material alone sometimes is the

source for my work. Concrete for example. It is often thought of as brutal, cold, unfriendly. What interests me is the confrontation when we experience familiar things

in unexpected surroundings. This led me to moduli, a “ready made” piece of furniture, turning the very rough

concrete tile into something presentable by bringing them into the living room.

aallokkoAallokko is a wall cover module made from pure finnish wool felt. A felt back supports the moveable interlocking parts. By arranging these parts freely, Allokko becomes three dimensional, serving as a multifunctional improvised storage. Through the good qualities of the wool felt Aallokko is suitable for public spaces as well as at home, improving acoustics.

cliffhangerCliffhanger is a lamp in the shape of a basic coat-hanger. Its character resembles a kind of simple and functional construction-side lamp. At the same time it combines two ordinary, every-day objects into one, creating a playful yet functional connection. It can be hung anywhere to light the environment, or used as a hand-held torchlight. Its 360° turning reflector allows a versatile anti-glare use. Covering the hanger with clothes will give personal shades, depending on one’s wardrobe.

saunaSimplicity, tradition and genuine could be the attributes I tie up with the experience sauna. Keeping these in mind I developed ideas around the theme of traditional finnish relaxation. The bench has the dimensions of stairs. With the movable stools a versatile, yet self evident sitting platform is created.

The structure of the construction is uniting the exterior with the interior. Openness meets personal shelter for a unique sauna experience.

› yacht designBoats have always fascinated me. As a kid I used to build big LEGO boats, filling the hull with foam and then letting them

float on the lake, me and my parents where living next to. Later I had a small classic wooden motor boat for some time,

making excursions on the Saima lake area. Now working as a designer I enjoy the possibility to visualize my ideas about yachting and trying to develop a rather conventional branch

of industrial design.

eCat hybridpower catamaran design study

Page 42: Juri Karinen Works

eCat hybrideCat hybrid is a motor catamaran design study. A multihull design bears unexplored possibilities in creating new, exciting boats. Environmental friendliness is also a target. The concept makes a high performance and a luxurious product, while being most energy efficient. The relatively compact dimensions, with a total length of under 60 feet, places the design into a category which could still be “owner-operated”. For the industry it could be a showcase for innovative technology and help to develop and promote new solutions.

The concept is now available and can be made a dream-come-true through the naval design company Icarus Marine and Hawk Technologies.

› electric boatsThe electric boat concepts draw their inspiration from an early age of motor boating, when engine performance was

low and the hulls had to be optimized for efficiency. The new electric components for marine use now

available set the framework for me to re-interpret classical motor yachting for today.

Page 46: Juri Karinen Works

electric run aboutThe design is based on a slender, energy efficient semi-displacement hull. As a fully electric runabout it will completely re-define the cruising experience. It is a noise, exhaust, and vibration free motorboat, which will make it the ideal platform to simply enjoy nature.

The boat is constructed fully in aluminium, combining cost-efficiency, low weight- and maintenance cost with ease of use. Wood is added as a constructional element to create an elegant contrast to the uncoated aluminium, giving it a valuable appeal.
