Dear reader,

Since i know you’ll be reading this summer

anyway, why not get some recognition for it?

Sign up for Summer reading and encourage

your friends and family to sign up, too, because

there are great incentives for every age group,

including a chance for kids to win a pass to the

Children’s Museum of the Upstate and a chance for adults to win

a pass to the Upcountry History Museum. Teens can earn cool

sunglasses and even babies can get a free board book.

This year’s explore your World Summer reading program, kicks

off June 5th with a kid-centered indie rock concert featuring a

musical salute to childhood! Be sure to check out the Summer

reading insert in this newsletter and add all the special events to

your calendar so you won’t miss a beat.

Share the love of reading by making a weekly trip to your favorite

public library part of your family’s summer routine. research

shows that reading over the summer can help children maintain

their reading skills and leave them better prepared for the school

year ahead. visiting the library to get books will help prevent

the “summer slide” plus connect children to a multitude of

exciting special events. From reptiles and critters to science and

symphonies, you’ll find something to inspire you and yours.

Whether you’re after a stack of beach reads or a book to listen to

while relaxing in your back yard, your library staff is ready to help

you enjoy your summer.

Happy reading!

EARLY LITERACY ACTIVITIES CHALLENGE

1 - As you participate in an early literacy activity from your baby’s log, put a checkmark on one point of the appropriate star.

2 - After you have 40 checks, go to the library location where you registered.

3 - Show your Early Literacy Activities log to sta and get a free board book.*

*One book per household, daycare or group. Titles may vary.

What is early literacy?Early Literacy is what children know about reading and writing long before they can actually read and write.

Can’t I just wait until my child starts school and let the teachers take care of this?Don’t wait. Shared Early Literacy experiences will be very rewarding for both of you and will help prepare your child for later reading and writing success.

How do I create these early literacy experiences?Talk, read, write, sing and play with your child. These activities will help build essential early literacy skills.

Ages 0-35 months

Welcome to our Summer
