On February 22nd, Juniper School will be promoting the

“International Day of Pink” in suppor t of our Canadian Red Cross

bullying prevention program. Students, staff and community members

will be wearing PINK in solidarity to stand for respect, kindness, and

speaking out about bullying. This is an initiative that provides students,

staff and the larger community with the opportunity to discuss the im-

pact of bullying and to learn how they can use their power to help cre-

ate a safe and respectful school environment. T-Shirts have been or-

dered, but please feel free to wear any that you have purchased before.

“A Humane Society Request”

Burn Awareness Week: February 5th to 11th.

In recognition of Burn Awareness Week in Manitoba, the Office of the Fire

Commissioner and the Manitoba Firefighters’ Burn Fund would like to invite

students in Grades 5 to 8 to submit original artwork featuring fire and burn

prevention safety messages for a provincial poster contest. Each year an esti-

mated 9,000 children in Canada visit hospital emergency rooms for burn

treatments, and almost half of these have suffered scalds from hot liquids.

Most Canadian parents do not know that the most common cause of burn in-

juries to children is not from fire, but from hot liquid scalds, such as spilled

hot drinks and tap water. Prizes will be awarded to four students, one from

grade 5, 6, 7 and 8 selected from entries submitted throughout the province of

Manitoba. Winners will receive an iPod Touch, safety materials for their

classmates and teacher and $300.00 from the Firefighters’ Burn Fund for

their school. Winning poster s will be displayed on the Office of the Fire

Commissioner and the Manitoba Firefighters’ Burn Fund websites for

one year.

Attendance In School Is Important

Did You Know? 1. Attendance in Manitoba is mandatory, not optional.

2. If a child is 10 minutes late daily, he or she will have lost 6 days of instruction time by the end of June.

4. If a child misses 15 days of school a year, he or she will have lost 1 year of instruction time by the end of

grade 12.

5. Students who attend school regularly, are more engaged in learning, have a greater sense of belonging in

their community, and are more likely to graduate.

6. Individuals without a high school diploma are twice as likely to experience unemployment & earn a low-

er income than high school graduates.

What Families Can Do to Support Good Attendance?

2. Talk to your children about the importance of attendance, starting at a nearly age.

3. Communicate regularly with the school if there is a problem or a concern and see what ways there are to

work together to solve it.

4. Help your child with preparing and planning for the upcoming school day to lessen anxiety.

5. Plan appointments around the school day wherever possible.

6. Plan vacations and outings around the school year whenever possible.
