Principles of Biomedical Science 2If science or the medical field (doctor, nurse, x-ray tech, etc.) interests you then this is the class for you as you will investigate the death of Anna Garcia as a forensic scientist who receives autopsy reports about what her post-mortem examination finds as you learn about heart disease, diabetes, sickle-cell disease, hypercholesterolemia, and infectious diseases. You will perform a wide variety of online activities, labs, and scientific investigations as you learn about basic biology and how that can lead to problems with the human body, but also how that knowledge can help people live longer, healthier lives.

The second sequence of the biomedical program at North involves the students examining the interactions of human body systems as they explore identity, power, movement, protection, and homeostasis. Students design experiments, investigate the structures and functions of the human body, and use data acquisition software to monitor body functions such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary action, and respiration while also building organs and tissues on a skeletal manikin, work through interesting real world cases and often play the roles of biomedical professionals to solve medical mysteries.

In the third biomedical course for students in the program, students investigate a variety of interventions involved in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease as they follow the life of a fictitious family and are exposed to a range of interventions related to immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices, and diagnostics. The course is a “How-To” manual for maintaining overall health and homeostasis in the body as students explore how to prevent and fight infection; screen and evaluate the code in human DNA; prevent, diagnose and treat cancer; and prevail when the organs of the body begin to fail.

In this capstone course, students apply their knowledge and skills to answer questions or solve problems related to the biomedical sciences. Students design innovative solutions for the health challenges of the 21st century as they work through progressively challenging open-ended problems, addressing topics such as clinical medicine, physiology, biomedical engineering, and public health. They have the opportunity to work on an independent project and may work with a mentor or advisor from a university, hospital, physician’s office, or industry. Throughout the course, students are expected to present their work to an adult audience that may include representatives from the local business and healthcare community.

Why are door handles always on the outside of doors? Why does one bad bulb ruin all the Christmas lights? How did opposing armies know what a safe distance was in war? Find the answers to these and many more questions in AP Physics. AP Physics looks at real world happenings and tries to understand the science and math behind them. Math is a basis for part of this class so decent math grades are recommended.

Adv. Science - Oceans First 2Ocean First is a STEM class based on Marine Science. In this course, you will learn about freshwater systems, ocean systems, monitor Sugar Creek waterway, construct underwater robot, and take Scuba lessons. You will need a physical for this class, and there is additional a $300.00 fee for your Scuba lessons and certification. *Fundraising can be done to pay for the fees

College A&P is required for nursing, dental hygienists, OT, PT, athletic trainers, medical school and dental school. 50% of students that take it in college, fail. Take it free in high school and set yourself up for success.

Bio II - Zoology 1Zoology is the study of animals, from the simplest sponges to the most complex mammals. Zoology involves comparisons of behavior, anatomy, and ecology across the animal kingdom; there are nine animal dissections in this course.

Student Publications (Yearbook) 2 or 3Yearbook/Publications is designed with the primary goal of producing the annual Charger Flashback yearbook. Students will experience the entire publication process from selling and creating advertisements, design of the cover and page layouts, gathering and writing the feature stories for each page, photography, interview skills, deadlines, organization and more.

Themes in Literature 1Themes in Literature is a course structured around the reading and intellectual needs of the student body. Themes are chosen as a class, texts and works are selected as a class, and then the course begins to have a life of its own as students find overlaps in culture across time and location. Aerobics 1The content of the class will center on exercise with the total body fitness in mind. Areas of instruction will be exercising for fitness through a variety of aerobic activities including plyometrics, yoga, pilates, kenpo, core, cardio, circuit, tae bo, and dance.

Lifeguarding 1The American Red Cross standards will be used in order to determine certification in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, First Aid, and Lifeguarding. The course will include videos, textbook learning, written testing, land-based skill testing, and in-water skill testing.

Band 3Students explore many styles and uses of music through performance.

Intermediate Chorus 3Students taking Intermediate Chorus develop musicianship and specific performance skills through ensemble and solo singing. Students develop the ability to understand and convey the composer's intent in performance of music. Students are required to participate in performance opportunities outside of the school day that support and extend learning in the classroom. Photography 1In this class you will learn how to operate a digital camera in Manual mode, how to take better pictures, and how to edit them.

Printmaking 1In this class you will learn the basics of making prints using woodblock, linoleum, silkscreen, and other printmaking styles.

Visual Communications 1In this class you will use your Chromebook to create posters, advertisements, photo collages, and much more. This class was formerly called Digital Design. Do not sign up for it if you took Digital Design previously.
