Look carefully through the Illegal Drugs in America exhibit

to answer the following questions:

To be a Junior Special Agent, you must go through training at the DEA Academy. You also need to know about drugs and their history.

1. What drug has been around for thousands of years and was used so much that people even made a statue honoring it?

2. In what country did the Opium Wars take place?

Find that country on the map and circle it.

3. Name one company that made products with drugs. It is still in business today. (Hint: it sells soft drinks.)

Activity 1 INTRODUCTION

Bonus Question (you may need an adult to help you). Find another company that made products with drugs and is still in business today (Hint: it sells aspirin.)

2

Page 5: Junior Agent Booklet for Grades 3-6 Free to Download

The DEA has four different types of specialists to enforce the drug laws. Please read about the jobs below, as they will help you finish the activity. (Hint: The words in red are very important).

Activity 2

The Forensic ChemistThey study different types of drugs so DEA can figure out what they are made of and where they came from. For example, the drug methamphetamine is made from chemicals like gasoline, ammonia, and battery acid, and certain types of cold medicine.

The Diversion InvestigatorThey keep track of medicines that are supposed to go to drug stores, and also of chemicals that make these medicines, to make sure they are not diverted (taken somewhere else). Many of these chemicals are sent from other countries on container ships in large 55-gallon drums.

The Intelligence Analyst

They try to get information about people - where they have traveled and how money has been moved from place to place. Intelligence Analysts also speak different languages like Spanish and Italian and other languages so they can interview people.

The Special AgentThey investigate, gather evidence, and make arrests to put drug dealers in jail. Sometimes they arrest local drug dealers who agree to work with them to help catch the more important international drug traffickers. They also work undercover by pretending to be a drug dealer so they can catch the bad guys.

On the next two pages, you will find four cases. Your mission: To assign a specialist to each case. Be sure to read these descriptions before you begin each case, as they will help you in your mission.

GOOD LUCK!3

DEA Case Files:

The French Connection

You are assigned to the foreign office in Paris, France. You have been watching a house because you believe it is the location of a heroin lab. You set up a wiretap to listen to their phone conversations. You intercept a coded leer. You must decode the leer to discover how and where the heroin is being smuggled. To decode the message, write down every 4th word.

Dear Sirs:

The items I saw yesterday will be perfect! I'll leave my card in Marseilles and come back in the afternoon. The Ambassador's Hotel rocks! My suitcase has many stickers. Meet the next taxi at 5:00 since the airport shuttle van needs new tires. Hope New York is cool! In August I'll visit my third vacation spot.

There are many different kinds of illegal drugs such as opium, heroin, barbiturates, amphetamines, cocaine, methamphetamines, hashish, marijuana, ecstasy, LSD, PCP, and many others. All of them can be very dangerous and many could even kill you.

This section will talk about two illegal drugs: heroin and cocaine.

Heroin:Heroin is a drug that comes from opium, which comes from the poppy plant. Heroin can be smoked like a cigarette, or snorted up the nose, or injected like a shot.

Opium poppies are usually grown in Southwest Asia, where Afghanistan, Turkey, Iran and Iraq are; in Southeast Asia, where Thailand, Burma and Laos are; and in Latin America, where Colombia and Mexico are.

Heroin makes your breathing slow down and if too much is taken, a person can stop breathing altogether. Heroin is also very addictive, and once someone starts using it, it is very hard to stop.

Go to the two computer kiosks in the exhibit. Using the one on the left, select heroin from the main menu, then select the "FACTS" button to find the answers. List 2 street names for heroin _______________ _________________

Activity 7

Cocaine:Cocaine is one of the most addictive and deadly drugs. Many people who try cocaine or crack, even once, can become addicted.

Cocaine comes from the coca plant, grown mainly in South America (Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and Chile) and also Mexico. Many acres of jungle are destroyed each year in order to grow coca plants and making cocaine can cause a lot of environmental hazards. Cocaine and crack are the same drug, but they are made in different ways. Cocaine comes in a powdered form, which is sniffed, and crack comes in the form of a rock or crystal, which can be smoked.
