From the builders of some of America's earliest railroads and farms to Civil Rights pioneers to digital technology entrepreneurs, Indian Americans have long been an inextricable part of American life. Beyond Bollywood: Indian Americans Shape the Nation explores the Indian American experience and the community's vital political, professional, and cultural contributions to American life and history. The exhibition moves past pop-‐culture stereotypes of Indian Americans to explore the heritage, daily experience, and diverse contributions of Indian immigrants and their descendants in the United States. Weaving together stories of individual achievement and collective struggle, Beyond Bollywood uses photography, narrative, multimedia, and interactive stations to tell a uniquely American story, while conveying the texture, vibrancy, and vitality of Indian American communities. President’s Message
This is my last message as President, and I can’t believe how fast the past two years have gone by. It has truly been an honor to serve the Guild, and it’s been a very enjoyable experience for me. I am constantly amazed by the number of wonderful volunteers who work together to carry out the Guild’s mission of promoting the visual arts in the community. At the last Board Meeting for this fiscal year, the Board approved a donation of $500 to the City of Fremont to purchase art supplies for the Youth Empowerment and Employment Academy for high school students who are on probation. The Academy, a joint program with the Fremont Unified School District, will run for eight weeks this summer, and the students will create a portable mural that will be displayed at multiple locations around the City. This is another great example of the Guild’s involvement in the community. There are several important Guild activities in the next couple of months. Be sure to mark your calendars for: June 19, the 47th Annual Textile Exhibition and recognition of the Guild’s Business Members at the reception; June 24, 6:30 p.m., the Guild’s Annual Installation Dinner at Papillon Restaurant; and August 1, (Saturday) Noon-‐3:00 p.m., the Guild’s reception for the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit “Beyond Bollywood, Indian Americans Shape the Nation”. We are extremely fortunate to have this traveling exhibit in our Gallery – don’t miss it! Please join me in welcoming Jan Quilici, your new Guild President, and the new Board for 2015-‐2016. I know Jan will do a terrific job as your President. Thank-‐you to all of you for your help, support, and especially your friendship. I look forward to seeing you at the artists’ receptions Gail Blalock, President OHAG
