Year 7 Canberra Trip NEXT TERM!

We are very excited about our upcoming year 7 trip to Sydney, Canberra and the snow that takes place in term 3 from the 31st of July – 4th August. For some of our students this will be their first time flying and their first time experiencing snow!

After flying into Sydney the students will be visiting Taronga Zoo before taking a ferry over to the Sydney Opera House to take in the sights. We will then enjoy a bus ride to Canberra where we will be staying at the Australian Institute of Sport.  Just some of the places the students will experience over the following week are; the Australian War Memorial, Discovery Zone, the Royal Australian Mint, Questacon, Parliament House, National Museum of Australia and the snow at Perisher.

For the lucky students that are participating in this trip, if you have any outstanding forms please make sure you get them back to the office as soon as possible. If you are unsure if you have forms still outstanding please email Mrs Suter on [email protected]

Senior Campus Sport Report – A sensational first half!

Term one saw outstanding results from our talented sports teams and coaches and with term two and the beginning of winter sports seasons, there have been even more remarkable results!

In week six of this term, the Year 8 and 9 High Performing Volleyball teams travelled to Toowoomba to compete in the Queensland Intermediate Volleyball Schools Cup tournament.  The boys teams played some marvellous sets and won many noteworthy points however missed out on a place in the grand final and finished 9th and 11th respectively.  The girls teams had an amazing tournament, with the Year 9 girls entering, and winning, division one.  The Year 8 girls were required to enter up an age group, playing in Year 9 Division Three.  The girls only lost one set all tournament and happily carried the gold medal back home with them. The Year 8 High Performing team are now very excited for their own competition, the Junior Schools Cup on the Gold Coast later on this year.

We will also host the Queensland Senior Volleyball Schools Cup in term three. A senior girls and boys team will enter.  After such amazing results, members of the Year 8 and 9 High Performing Sport Program have been offered to trial for these Senior teams.   The Year 7 girls and boys High Performing Volleyball students are currently training hard and will also compete in the Junior Schools Cup in term four.

At the end of the term, Year 7 students competed in their first winter Gala Day.  This tournament will hold one more Gala day, early into term 3.  The High Performing Volleyball girls are in a comfortable position, with both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams placing first in their pool.  The boys Rugby League and girls Netball teams also put up a hard fight and narrowly missed out on a top three finish.  On top of our many district representatives in term 1, we had five more talented Junior Secondary athletes make District and Metropolitan Representative Teams across AFL, Baseball, Touch Football and Basketball.

The Capalaba Cup!

This term, students at the College participated in the first Capalaba Cup Basketball Tournament to celebrate the opening of our recently refurbished basketball courts. We were hoping for 28 students to make four teams and ended up with 75 students getting involved allowing for 12 teams across 3 different divisions to contest for the championship. Each of our leaders were represented well by their respective teams – the Johnstone Jaguars, the Barrett Bears, the Mayfield Mustangs and the French Frogs – however ultimately there could only be one winner in each competition. The Barrett Bears took our the Development league title whilst the Johnstone Jaguars took out both the Premier and Senior Cup titles in what was a very even and competitive tournament. It doesn’t end there though as in coming weeks, students will be participating in an ‘All-Star’ week program with a three point shootout, a dunk comp and an all-star game played against the teachers. It’s been a big term for basketball at Capalaba State College!!!

Upcoming Events - Redlands Eisteddfod - Sunday 9th July at Ormiston College (Lingo Lin Performing Arts Centre)

It’s been a very busy term for the Dance department. The College Dance Teams competed in their first Eisteddfod on Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd of June at the Brisbane Performing Arts Challenge (BPAC). Both teams did a fantastic job and held their own in a very tough competition, the Junior Dance Team was awarded a Highly Commended for their Contemporary piece. Our next Eisteddfod is the Redlands Eisteddfod at Ormiston College on the 9th of July. As the Redlands Eisteddfod is held in the local area we would love the support of family, friends and the community to come along to cheer on our talented Dance Team. The session starts at 9am at the Lingo Lin Performing Arts Centre, Ormiston College – Sturgeon Street. Tickets can be purchased on the day. We hope you can join us on the day in supporting these talented students.

Premier’s Reading Challenge – Progress Report The Premier's Reading Challenge is an annual state-wide initiative that aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read widely for pleasure and learning. For students in Years 7 to 9 to successfully complete the challenge they must read fifteen books during the reading period. Students who complete the challenge have their efforts recognised through the receipt of a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier of Queensland.

There is no compulsory reading list for the challenge. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability.

This is week 5 of the Challenge. To be on target, participating students should now have read five books. Please encourage your child to get involved in the Challenge and encourage their reading.

CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP DECIDED

In the end it came down to just ten minutes of brutal attacking chess.

Bailey P overcame a much higher-rated opponent in Michael M to claim the 11th College Chess Championship.

Bailey dominated the game from the outset. Winning his opponent’s queen in an early exchange, Bailey relentlessly exploited his opponent’s weakened defence to expose the king and force an early and decisive checkmate.

Runner-up Michael M lost just 3 of his 9 matches in the tournament, but two of those losses were to the ultimate champion Bailey. Sets the scene for an interesting rivalry in next year’s championship.

Trophies for the finalists, and certificates of participation for all who entered the tournament will be presented on assembly next term.

Michael M manoeuvres in vain while Bailey P waits to deliver his coup de grâce

YEAR  4 LIVING HISTORY

Tuesday, May 30 was the day of our History Incursion. Actors were our hosts and they showed and explained what life was like in the 1700s. Some of us were selected to join in the drama- ask Jenkins (Isabelle is her Year 4 name) what it was like to be a man servant! As we proceeded through our incursion, our hosts let us touch, look, smell and wear some of the articles they had brought along. They had weapons, food, clothing and tools and we all enjoyed smelling the 2 year old dried meat! I am thankful that I was not living in those days!

We also did some fun bush dancing where we had to dance with a partner and we were puffed out by the end. After the dance we did some activities like the children in the 1700s might have played. We had a fun and exciting game of Ship, Sea and Shore and had a competition throwing horse shoes. The girls won and the boys were not happy! The day finished with a Tug-O-War between the Sailors, Convicts, Red Coats and Settlers. The team of Sailors were the strongest. Then we thanked our hosts for a memorable day.

Year 1 Library Excursion

On Wednesday the 7th of June, Year 1 students visited the Capalaba Library.  We had an enjoyable time listening to a number of stories told by a member of the Library’s staff and then had the opportunity to complete a craft activity. We spent some time browsing and enjoying the many childrens books that can be loaned by students and families.  Thank you to the many parents who accompanied us on the excursion assisting us with the supervision of students.  A great time was had by all.

National Simultaneous Storytime 2017

On the 24th of May at 11:30am, 4/5/6D invited 4A and Prep C to celebrate National Simultaneous Storytime, an annually held event that sees thousands of participants across Australia share the same story at the same time. National Simultaneous Storytime is a campaign that aims to encourage more children to read and enjoy books. Now in its 17th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6. This year the children listened and enjoyed “The Cow Tripped Over the Moon” written by Tony Wilson, illustrated by Laura Woodby and interpreted into Auslan (Australia Sign Language) by Michelle Goodison.

Junior Campus Competes in Readers Cup 2017 The Queensland Regional Readers Cup Competition - Bayside District night was held at Cleveland this month between 20 teams from Year 5 and 6 Bayside schools. Capalaba Junior Campus fielded a strong team of five Year 6 girls who had to prepare by studying 5 books in depth, quizzing each other on specific story details. Ms Griffiths 6A was the team manager and Readers Cup judge. On the night a quiz master hosted 6 rounds of challenging questions taken from each story. Our team was very happy with their performance and they were also entertained by author of one of the Readers Cup books ‘Zakora #1: The Fyrelit Tragedy’ Nicholas Lochel who explained how he and his sister have written their successful novel series.

Debating returns to Junior Campus

After a 15 years hiatus junior debating has returned. Our fresh new team of Year 6 girls Paige, Jade, Aurora and Charlotte prepared well and Ethan stood in a chairman for the night. Debate argued for and against whether large animals should not be kept in zoos. For a first outing the team had a very respectable performance and most of all they had fun. Both teams took home a win so it was great night at the host school Adventist College.

Year 3 Cooking Day

This term, Year 3 learned how to write and follow a procedure. To celebrate our learning, we got to follow a recipe to make some delicious damper and lovely lemonade scones! We are not sure if the best part was getting our hands covered in dough or eating the final product! Well done to Year 3.
