Karunapuram, 4to5 July 2017: Vishwa Jyothi DonBosco Philosophate, Karunapuram organized theseminar on Facts and Myths about CharismaticMinistry. The resource person for the seminar wasRev. Fr Benny Svd, a well known charismaticpreacher and presently he is the director of DivineWord Centre at Muthangi. Brother Patrick, alayman, one of the team members of Fr Bennyanimated two sessions. It was a very appropriatetopic for this generation of 21st century to revive the spirit of charismatic ministry inthe Church.

We are living in an era wherein many people see charismatic ministry in the Churchas an emotional blackmail and are very critical about it. They see it as nothing morethan cheating Moreover, many priests, religious and candidates to consecrated lifetoo have wrong notions about Charismatic Ministry. Hence, they do not appreciatethe unique gift of the Holy Spirit to such ministry. To clarify such wrong conceptionsthe seminar in consideration was organized.

The sessions started with the invocation of the Holy Spirit imploring him toovershadow the attendants with his presence and enthuse them with zeal for Christ. In the that presentations followed on the two days Fr Benny dealt with the origin ofthe charismatic mission and went on to explain the history of the charismatic ministryand then ended his session encouraging the brothers to get involved in the ministryof the Holy Spirit. With biblical evidences he showed that it was God the Father whooriginated the charismatic mission as a salvific plan for the entire human race, andit was in and through Jesus the plan was accomplished. He noted sadly that most ofthe priests and religious have forgotten such a mission of the Holy Spirit. Everydisciple of Jesus is called to get involved the in charismatic ministry which entailspreaching the good news, praying, healing, prophesying, performing miracles; inshort doing all types of activities that Jesus did. However, today many priests andreligious have turned towards worldly things like money, power, position, internet, sex, etc. and due to this the Church ministers fail to perform the miraculous worksthat are endowed on them by the Father. In the charismatic ministry it is the HolySpirit who works through the ministers and does wondrous things. It is the powerthat comes from above. The power does not come from the world, from humanbeings but from the Holy Spirit. It is the same spirit who gives different gifts to

different people. The Bible says that withoutfaith we cannot please God. There aredifferent types of faith, those that aredoctrinal, thematic and expectant faith.Through faith in Jesus we can heal a personwho is physically, mentally and spiritually ill.Faith does miracles. At the end of two daysof animations he posed a question: whetherwe have received the Holy Spirit. If so whyare there no miracles, healings in theirministry? The seminar ended with the

message inviting everyone to be a model like Jesus to the faithful and to carry on their life infidelity as charismatic disciples till the end for Jesus. Through the seminar we came tounderstand the facts and myths about the charismatic ministry and its importance. Theseminar was effective and the fruits of it can be judged from the positive feedbacks. It enlargedour hearts and broadened our minds. - BIS Correspondent

Ravulapalem: On a scorching summermorning PARA office at Ravulapalem wokeup to the buzz of over 70 young adolescentboys and girls running, playing and chatting. They were Human Rights club members from6 districts. They are part of over 1000 HumanRights Clubs in over 600 government schoolsin the Telugu States of Andhra Pradesh andTelangana. The camp was inaugurated atPARA in Andhra Pradesh by Fr. Ignatius,Director of PARA, in the presence of Fr.Neelam Ratna Kumar from Navajeevan,Visakhapatnam and Mr. Solomon Paul,Director of LAMP, Guntur. A similar campwas held at Ramanthapur, Hyderabad.Children had interface with office bearers ofICPS, CWC, JJB and Childline. Ms. Khatijafrom Amnesty International was a specialinvitee at Ramanthapur. The Camp atRamanthapur was concluded by theTelangana State Women Development andChild Welfare Secretary, Mr. M. Jagadishwar

IAS. The occasion was also the launching anew year for the HR Clubs as they seek tomove beyond the schools to the communitiesat the village panchayat and Mandal or sub-district levels of local self-governance.

Human Rights Clubs (HRCs) are a voluntarygroups of High School students who want toknow and practice Human rights in theirschools and develop a culture of HumanRights there. Each club is guided by a trainedteacher from the school. Mr Ramesh Taritlaand team organise the clubs in AndhraPradesh and Mr Ambedkar Sodabatini inTelangana.

Summer camps and HUMAN RIGHTStogether sound an incredible combination. This is what PARA offered to the students. The club members were thrilled with the 3-day camp that promised to be exciting. Halfthe participants were girls even thoughparents are generally afraid to send them

fearing for their safety.

This year HRC summer camps were openonly to the Human Rights Club leaders atMandal or sub-district level. They wereoffered 3 days of joyful “out of home” life:filled with fun, games, songs and good food.Human Rights Education and skills wereintegrated into their games and activities, without losing the fun in them.

The camps had all the regular teenagerfriendly items like aerobic exercises, music, party games and camp fires; participantscould be care free, crack jokes, join variouscompetitions, dance to popular tunes andhave all the fun and frolic. The participantsremained fresh, energetic and alert in spiteof almost 17 hour days from 6.00 AM to 11.00PM daily.

Children are creative and are looking forsomething new. Learning “New skills” triggerthe toggle button in the student’s mind. The“Human Rights” element too has an“originality” knocking on the young person’surge to respond to the blatant injustices insociety. This year the focus was on takingthe HR clubs from the school to thecommunity to promote Human Rightspractice and prevent HR violations there.AHuman Rights Club functions through 6 sub

groups. The HR Study group focuses onknowing more about Human Rights. TheMonitoring Group looks out for various waysof practising Human Rights and preventingtheir violations in the school. There is the HRMedia Group that tracks national andinternational HR developments and keeps theclub informed. The HR Culture Groupspreads HR awareness in the school andbeyond. HR Gender Group works for genderequality the in school. And finally there isHR Child Rights Group that focuses on ChildRights and their implementation in the school.

Among the Child Rights, the Right toParticipation is the basis for the working ofthese clubs. The “Right to Participation”arises from 3 Articles of the United NationsConvention on the Rights of the Child. Article12 speaks of the 'Right to be heard.' Article13 speaks of the 'Freedom of Expression' andArticle speaks of the 'Freedom of Association.'

The club conducts monthly meetings and themost urgent report of one of the six groups iscommunicated to the school authorities as apetition from the club. These monthlypetitions and their implementation developa HR culture in the school. They make the

school, a better school. In this way the HRclub Participates in the “Governance” of theschool by expressing its opinion on the HRstatus in the school.

PARA has established over 1000 HR clubs in600 schools of Andhra and Telengana withover 30,000 students as members. RecentlyPARA has initated steps to connect theactivities of the HR clubs beyond the schoolpremises to the communities where themembers live. These Panchayat HR groupshave gathered at the Mandal or sub-districtlevel and formed the Mandal HR club.Similarly District and state level HR clubshave been formed. The summer camp wasintended to train the Mandal Office bearersof the HR Clubs to initiate HR activities inthe selected Panchayats/Mandals through theexercise of the Right to “Participation”.

72 Mandal office bearers attended thesummer camp organised at Ravulapalem forAndhra region in the first week of June andanother 68 at Ramanthapur for theTelengana region in the fourth week. Theparticipants attended sessions on HumanRights, Child rights, and on leadership. Theywere given inputs on different committeesand their activities in the Panchayats.

The summer camp made the participantsaware of the many HR/CRC violations in thePanchayat like deficient water supply, sanitation, chid-malnutrition, school dropouts, child labour, child marriage, lack ofhealth facilities for children, child mortality, migration, trafficking and so on. These areclichéd topics and the local authorities maynot listen to the petitions of children. So thesummer camp devoted special sessions toexplore different opportunities available tomake the authorities listen to the opinions ofchildren. They wanted to do this through theexercise of the “Right to Participation”. TheHR club members would get their opinionsregistered in the legally established

committees of the Panchayat. Resourcepersons gave a deeper understanding of thisRight to Participation and the functioning ofpanchayats.

The HR Club members residing in thePanchayat would find ways to be acceptedas members in the various committeesfunctioning at the Panchayats or Mandals. The child protection committees at thePanchayats and Mandals are often dormant. The HR members will enter these committees, revive them and carry their opinions throughresolutions passed in these committees to theVillage Sarpanch or the Mandal President.Similarly the HR club girls try to be membersof the “adolescent girls’ committee” or in theAnganwadi committee. All can participate inGrama Sabhas and express their opinionson Human Rights or Child Rights violations. This will increase the Human Rights andChild Rights awareness in the Panchayat orMandal. In this way the HR membersparticipate in the “Governance” of thePanchayats and Mandals. The aim of thecurrent exercise is to make the Panchayatsand Mandals more child-friendly. If thePanchayat or Mandal board members arewilling to listen to children’s opinions andimplement some of them the HR clubs willhave succeeded to some degree in makingthese democratic bodies more CHILDFRIENDLY and more democratic.

This has been a long journey ofpatient reflection, of intellectual durabilityand of divine inspiration. It presents to the readerpathways of a primordial theology ofengagements which also challenges us toexplore further how a new political economy,

Rome, 13 June 2017: Our dear confreres FrPutti Anthaiah and Fr Prakash Maramreddyhave defended successfully their theses atthe Salesian Pontifical University in Rome.

Fr Anthaiah wrote his thesis on the theme of“Community Life and its Relevance in theFormation to Religious Life, with SpecialReference to Fraternal Life in Communityand the GC XXV Documents of the Salesiansof DB.” Here is a gist of the main argumentsof the thesis in Fr Anthaiah’s own words:“Man is a social being. He lives in community. The Church is essentially a faith community;its members are called to live in communion. The religious are called to live thiscommunion radically in following theteaching of Jesus. In this present timecommunity life is facing challenges. So theformation of the candidates to be religiousin a community is important. The twodocuments I studied express the fact thatcommunity life is formative in itself. A goodformation takes place both for initial andongoing formation in the community”. Thetittle of Fr Prakash Maramreddy’s thesiswas “The Integral Spiritual Formation of theYoung with a Special Reference to theCatholic Institutes of Learning in Telugu

Speaking Regions of South India.” FrPrakash summarieses the thesis well in hisown words below: “The situation today posesmany spiritual and moral dangers for theyoung people in choosing the right path fortheir future and to have a commitment infollowing Christ. One of the main focuses ofDon Bosco’s teachings and formation of theyoung people was spiritual formation, whichis testified by his statement ‘to be responsiblecitizens and good Christians’. The presentsituation in the Telugu speaking regions ofSouth India or rather in the whole of India isto produce ‘academic giants and spiritualnothings’.
