Leadership Temple, a program of the Temple Chamber ofCommerce designed to prepare future Temple leaders for commu-nity-oriented, decision-making positions, has completed anotheryear of community involvement and leadership training. The 2012-2013 Class, like all previous classes, was tasked with implementinga project that benefits our community.

The most recent graduates from the program developed a SNACKPACK program to provide area children in need non-perishablefood items that can be taken home each weekend. This programwill bring direct benefits to approximately 70 students from low-income households each week. These students might not other-wise have a meal after leaving school on Friday. School counselorswill identify children in need and work with Churches TouchingLives for Christ to distribute SNACK PACKS to the children eachweek.

In addition to their efforts to raise funds and awareness for thiscause, the class participated in monthly “class” days in which theywere able to gain behind the scenes experience for areas impor-tant to our community like local government, educa-tion and economic development. “Leadership Temple has been a greatexperience for me. It has given me newappreciation for what it takes for a suc-cessful city to operate and continue to excelon so many levels from daily operations tocivil service to promoting and sustaining ahealthy business environment,” said TylerJohnson, BBVA Compass, of his experience in the

class. The class has not finished raising all the funds necessary to meet

its goal. There are still opportunities for individuals and businessesto partner with them and help make this project a reality. Moreinformation about the program and how to donate can be obtainedfrom their facebook page by searching Temple SNACK Packs or bycontacting the Chamber.

Congratulations to the Leadership Temple Class of 2012-2013 for making a lasting impact on our community.

The Entrepreneur Corner

When we hear those words, usually something hasturned out badly. Wouldn’t it have been better if wecould have known their story beforehand, so wecould have avoided the poor results? Recall from the literature course, you had to take in

school, the English poet John Donne wrote, “No manis an island.”Another great philosopher, Yogi Berra, said, "You can

observe a lot by just watching."These sayings point to one overriding truth …

Stop trying to reinvent thewheel. Get a mentor!

When I was younger I managed my investments inthe traditional way, let somebody else do it. I did OK,though by the time I helped my kids through col-lege, I was less than broke. Finally I saw the light andbegan working with a group of wealth buildingexperts. First, throughtheir newsletters. Theirwritings opened up thethought process behindspecific investmentopportunities, so I couldlearn from their expert-ise, rather than just take“tips”. My resultsimproved dramatically. Isoon arranged to meetthe people behind the publica-tions and get their experiences directly. The moneyI spent on this mentoring opportunity was returned

to me over two hundredtimes.

I believe that over halfmy net worth today canbe attributed to things Ilearned and am still learn-ing from the collective

experience and expertise of these financial gurus. The same is true in business endeavors, those whowill admit they don’t know it all, can find someonewho does. Yet, your mentor doesn’t have to be justone person.

If one mentor is valuable, multiple mentors areinvaluable. Build a mentor group. Napoleon Hill, inhis seminal book, Think and Grow Rich, wrote aboutthe importance of a mastermind group. This was nota new idea. Ben Franklin went from being a printer’sapprentice, to owning a publishing company. Hewas one of America’s most influential foundingfathers and the richest man in America. He didn’t doit alone. Ben found inspiration, guidance and nurtur-ing from his mastermind group. Though each men-tor can provide significant value, you can benefitmore by coupling thoughts from several experts.

So, how do you build your mas-termind group? Go to events that attractpeople who can help you in your business building.

Identify potential mentors. Before you approachsomeone to invest their time in you, know whereyou want to go. Without high level goals and aroadmap, you’ll be wasting the mentor’s time and he

won’t work with you very long.To maximize your relationship with each mentor,

define what you must learn that this person can bestteach? Track your progress. Are you reaching yourgoals and learning what you need? Making progressis your responsibility not the mentor’s. Your mentoris your coach, not a player! You make the decisions, based on the mentor’s advice and what you’velearned. Mentors hold the lantern so that others cansee the path.

To have a lasting relationshipwith your mentor, provide rea-sons for him to continue. Usually, men-tors value knowing they’ve helped more than anintrinsic reward. Show him you value his counsel.Tell him, specifically, what you learned. Thank himeach time you meet. When you begin to achievemonetary results from mentoring, it is time to offermonetary compensation. When you bring it up, havean idea of how much continued support is worth.Don’t pay more. If the mentor believes that’s not suf-ficient, then you need to graciously end it.
