The ever-cheerful members of the FANS race committee, pictured above, thank you for joining us to celebrate the audacity of the human spirit. For a change the weather was nigh unto perfect: 73° high, light winds, 0.06” of rain that spritzed to cool without soaking shoes. With four new course records and adding about $31,000 to the scholarship coffers, we’d call that a successful day. Whether you staffed an aid station, ran nonstop through all 24 hours, crewed for an individual runner or supported the event through sponsorships, we thank you for your contribution to that success. We look forward to once again welcoming you to A Day at The Lake for the 28
th running of FANS on June 3-4, 2017. Same time, same
place, same indomitable participants. But don’t expect a replay of the glorious weather. Paul and Pat Sackett, race directors
2016 Pledge Honorees
FANS is more than a race, it’s the sole funding source for the college scholarship fund that gives at-risk youth a foundation upon which to build their dreams of a successful future. The following individuals ensured that their sweat and blisters would make a difference, gathering pledges above and beyond entry fees. The race committee and the FANS students offer their sincerest and deepest thanks for their efforts.

Director’s Awards FANS Director’s Awards are named in honor of the members of the race committee who work year-round to make the race special. They’re awarded to race participants who deserve special recognition for their achievements or contributions.
Fern Anderson Memorial Award – Most Inspirational Walker Radek Lopusnik was all geared up to walk FANS 2015 and then got smacked with an injury. So he volunteered for pretty much all 24 hours instead. Apparently he recovered, and took home the 1
st place award in the 24-
hour. Who says there’s no such thing as karma?
.
Cheri Baker Award – Miles to Go Before I Race (Longest Distance Traveled)
Sounds like FANS’ fame is spreading: Jason Oertli came all the way from Kihei Hawaii to run the 12-hour! Well, yeah, he does have Minnesota connections, but don’t burst our bubble. We were feeling important for a while, there.
E Fischer-Drew and Jon Drew Award – The Place at the Lake (Best Campsite) There’s nothing like flying pigs and giant pink doughnuts to keep somebody pumped for 24 hours. At least that’s what Mary Harvey’s crew came up with, and we appreciated the weirdness big-time.
Bob Frawley Founder’s Award – Fastest First Lap We’re guessing Kyle Gulseth doesn’t subscribe to the ‘slow and steady wins the race’ concept, as he tore through the first 3.87 miles in 33:01. By the end of 24 hours he was just shy of 100k, and no doubt plotting his 2017 strategy shortly thereafter.
Tom Lundgren Award – Outstanding Race Day Volunteer Bob Marsh told volunteer coordinator Tom Lundgren that he intended to up the ante at Aid 2 and turn it into something more than a lonely outpost. Signs! Lights! Music! The promise of beer! And then he staffed this extravaganza for the full 24 hours. How can we clone this guy?
Chris Nutting Award – Closest to 100 Miles Robert Nutt scored the Nutting with 99.4 miles, but seemed philosophical about it. In his second ultra and first FANS his goal was 80+ miles, so we’re guessing we’ll need to make sure we have a 100-mile sweatshirt in his size in 2017.
Dan Ostgaard Award – Feel Lucky, Punk? (Latest Long Lap Completed in 24-Hour) Cruising into the short-lap madness of Tent City at 23:58:13 was Karl Benson. Then he managed to cram 2 short laps in before the cowbell. Can you say ‘cool’?
Paul Robinson/Dave Eitrheim Memorial Award – Best Medical Story Sue Olsen has done FANS 26 of its 27 years, missing out on a 100-mile sweatshirt twice. In 1995 she walked 100k before giving birth the next day (!), and in 2016 she fell, ripped her arm up badly enough to merit a trip to the ER, and returned Sunday morning to turn her course record title over to Courtney Dauwalter. The word ‘warrior’ comes to mind.
Kelly and Luke Tabara Award – FANS Ambassador It’s not tough to get Fast Eddie Rousseau talking about running or FANS. The trick is getting him to stop, and that kind of enthusiasm spills over into large donations for the scholarship fund and more runners trying ultras. Carry on, Ed!
Paul and Pat Sackett Award – Highest Combined Mileage for a Couple Erin Warshaw joined us at FANS for the first time in 2012 and has been back every year since. We’re not sure if husband Jeff figured he needed to take this up if he was ever going to see his wife or not, but between them they cranked out 125.3 miles.
Kevin Wilde Award – Great Ultra Story This was the first ultra that Ronald Wilmoth has tried since he was officially declared dead after a post-run stroke, and chilled to prevent further damage as medics brought him back. Daughter Shannon kept a close eye on him for most of the race, heading out on her own for only a few laps. The Tribe welcomes you back, Ronald!
.
Fat Lorenzo’s Award – Top Pledge Total Either Les Martisko has unbelievable persuasive powers, he knows a lot of truly generous people, or he’s got pictures on folks who don’t want those photos seen. Whatever, he’s collecting a complete set of Top Pledge Total awards and all we can say is Keep it comin’!
Old Chicago Award– 2nd Highest Pledge Total In addition to setting a pretty astonishing 12-hour record, Michael Bialick also rang up a hefty pledge total. If you’d like to try to best your 100-mile PR of 12:52:53 here at FANS next year, Michael, we sure wouldn’t complain.
RockSteady Running Award – 3rd Highest Pledge Total In his fourth FANS, Terry Coffey walked home with some hardware for the $1400 in pledges he’d accumulated and logged 92.7 miles. That’s a fine day’s work in anybody’s book.
Anderson Race Management Award – Most Sponsors If it’s not what you know but who you know, Robert Nutt is following that philosophy with a large number of friends, family, and acquaintances. He managed to persuade 26 of them to pledge for his run, and toted up a tidy sum – and another plate -- in the process.

The 500 Mile Club, Class of 2016
Doug Kleemeier needed a paltry 10.7 miles to hit the magic 500 in his fifth FANS. Did we mention he won his division four of those years? Consistency is a wonderful thing.
Over the years, off and on, Mary Croft has joined us for eight outings. As someone who’s run FANS on all three lakes it’s inhabited, we’re pleased she’s finally able to snuggle into a 500 mile vest on those cold Tucson evenings.
It may have taken 12 years, but Heather Kick-Abrahamson finally scored her 500
th mile. This
time, she shared the course with husband Richard; we’ll see if he snags a 500 mile vest
before Heather takes home her 1000 mile jacket. The race is on!

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Mary Harvey’s crew for proving the description of FANS as “a weird sort of carnival”
still holds true.

Very Special Thanks to Our Very Special Sponsors Without the support of local and national businesses, the FANS race wouldn’t exist. Their cash and in-kind donations allow us to direct all pledge dollars to the FANS scholarship fund rather than to race support. Please express your thanks the next time you patronize them, and let them know their generosity does not go unnoticed.
These are the kind folks who gave us stuff for volunteer prize drawings. Aren’t they great? Thank them!
