“The Glory Of Heaven!”

“Heaven”—a word that fills the pages of history. It’s a word used by poets and songwriters, politicians and pagans. In some contexts, Heaven simply means the sky above or a wonderful experience. It symbolizes ideas with important meaning, even for atheists.

For some, Heaven is a code word for their vision of God or concepts like fate or the future. George Washington, for example, issued an order in September 1776, declaring that

the country could be saved only with “the blessing of Heaven.” Benjamin Franklin told the American Constitutional Convention in June 1787 to implore “the assistance of Heaven.”

Heaven is central to many civilizations. When he arrived in China in the 13th century, Marco Polo was impressed by “the City of Heaven,” which he called the greatest city in the world.

But Believers should remember that Heaven is not an idea or concept. It’s real, and it’s our eternal destination. The Bible tells us that:

Heaven is God’s “holy dwelling place” where He is enthroned and worshiped, (Deuteronomy 26:15),

There we will spend eternity with Him (1 Thessalonians 4:17). There, Jesus has prepared a place for us (John 14:1). There, we should store our treasure (Matthew 6:20). There, we’ll receive our rewards (Matthew 5:12). In fact, Heaven is where we have our real citizenship – already!

(Philippians 3:20).

Some, like the Apostle John, actually have caught a glimpse of Heaven. John describes it in Revelation 21:

“And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.

It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.12 It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel… The wall was made of jasper, and

the city of pure gold, as pure as glass.” Revelation 21:10-12,18

The reality is that nothing in this life can prepare us for the glories of Heaven. Paul said that God has prepared something so wonderful, it’s beyond our comprehension! Today, don’t allow the problems of today blind you to the blessing of what God has promised to those who trust and believe in Him. Think about Heaven and all that God has prepared for you!

On the grace journey together with you, Lynwood

June 9th – Pentecost Sunday 2019! And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for

the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38

In Christ coming as the Messiah and Savior of the world, the many promises of God to His people, the Jews, came to pass. In other words, Jesus

encompassed all that God had to that point, and through the promises of His covenant with Abraham, had chosen to reveal to man.

This Sunday we celebrate Pentecost. In the outpouring of the Holy Spirit which followed the earthly ministry of Jesus, all of the promises of Christ to all people – both Jew and Gentile alike were fulfilled. Jesus had told His followers to go and wait for Him after He had resurrected and reappeared to them. He promised if they waited they would receive power.

And so they waited. They hid, really. They were all together in one place on that day, the day of Pentecost. And when they received the Holy Spirit they all were given the power to speak in languages they didn’t know, and had never learned. Those who heard them were amazed that these uneducated men, and mostly Galileans, were able to speak many languages. Some scoffed, some mocked…but they listened.

As they listened, the previously timid disciples who were in hiding boldly came out among them and proclaimed their exuberant praise to God. Then Peter delivered a sermon in the common market language that was generally understood and spoken, that brought around 3,000 to Christ that day.

It wasn’t a “here’s how to get a better life” sermon, or even a “Jesus loves you” speech. Peter simply pointed to the truth through events that had taken place and then let the conviction of the Holy Spirit do its work in the hearts of the people. They heard it and were “cut to the heart” (Acts 2:37).

Then Peter gave them a chance to respond, which they did.

The work of the Holy Spirit in believers on Pentecost is the same power He employs today in us. Things may not always be so drastic as to see thousands of people saved in one moment, but His conviction in their hearts and His work in us to be bold in speaking the truth is still very real, just as it was for Peter and the eleven. He may not ever urge you to speak in tongues or to preach in front of a massive crowd, but He will empower you to do God’s will in whatever situation you do find yourself in. To God be the glory, great things He has done – and continues to do in those who are surrendered to His power!

The Last Impression

Ol' Fred had been a faithful Christian and was in the hospital, near death. The family called their preacher to stand with them.

As the preacher stood next to the bed, Ol' Fred's con-dition appeared to deteriorate and he motioned fran-tically for something to write on. The pastor lovingly handed him a pen and a piece of paper, and Ol' Fred used his last bit of energy to scribble a note, then suddenly died. The preacher thought it best not to look at the note at that time, so he placed it in his

jacket pocket.

At the funeral, as he was finishing the message, he realized that he was wear-ing the same jacket that he wore when Ol' Fred died. He said, "You know, Ol' Fred handed me a note just before he died. I haven't looked at it, but knowing Fred, I'm sure there's a word of inspiration there for us all."

He opened the note and read, "Please step to your left – you're standing on my oxygen tube!"

I Thought He Was Talking To You

At the height of a political corruption trial, the prosecuting attorney attacked a witness. "Isn't it true," he bellowed, "that you accepted five thousand dollars to compromise this case?" The witness stared out the window, as though he hadn't heard the question.

"Isn't it true that you accepted five thousand dollars to compromise this case?" the lawyer repeated. The witness still did not respond.

Finally, the judge leaned over and said, "Sir, please answer the question." "Oh," the startled witness said, "I thought he was talking to you."

I seem to have the same trouble when I'm preaching. Everybody thinks I'm talking to everyone else! :-) It's easy to listen to a sermon thinking, "Boy, I sure hope brother so-and-so is listening to this one!" (I know, I've done it my-self). It is crucial, though, that we listen to all messages that come from the word of God with the thought, "What does this have to say to me?" because only when I make personal application can I learn and grow.

"Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye'; and look, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to

remove the speck from your brother's eye." (Matt.7:3-5)

What really makes for a happy life? A dream job, a bigger house, or a new relationship? If you’re always hungry for the next big thing, but frustrated because it never seems to satisfy, you might be Chasing

Carrots. It’s time to hop off the treadmill and chase after something real.

This five-week series is about things people commonly chase after that only bring fleeting happiness, fulfillment, or validation—things like

fame, achievements, perfectionism, approval or comfort… Plan now to invite a friend!

God is doing some exciting things through

the people of God at HBC…

Please remember your commitments and

giving and be part of the
