Today we celebrate the Day of Pentecost and we reflect upon the Holy Spirit, who is God and the Third Person of the Holy Trinity. Ten days after the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven (fifty days after the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead), the first disciples of Jesus were in the same upper room of the Last Supper waiting in prayer for the coming of the Holy Spirit. The feast of Pentecost is the third most important holy day celebrated within the Church, with the first most important being Easter and the second being Christmas. Pentecost is the celebration of the Holy Spirit Himself because of who He is, the Third Person of the Holy Trinity, what He does for us as individuals, and what He does for the Church as a whole. Pentecost is considered to be the birthday of the Church because it was on this day that the Holy Spirit descended upon the Church and empowered the Apostles and the other disciples of Jesus to proclaim the Gospel throughout the world. Pentecost is directly connected to the sacrament of Confirmation. Confirmation seems to be one of the most neglected sacraments (after Confession). The reception is not necessary for our salvation, but necessary to be full members of the Church. “It must be explained to the faithful that the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace. For "by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1285).

Confirmation is a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit, just as at Pentecost. The Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church have two Sacraments through which the Holy Spirit descended upon us: Baptism and Confirmation. In the Sacrament of Baptism, the Grace of God comes upon us through the Holy Spirit who descends upon us, cleanses us from sin, and makes us Children of God. In the Sacrament of Confirmation, we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to not just become children, but soldiers of God, true Knights of the Kingdom of God. Fortified by the Holy Spirit and armed with His Gifts, we are part of God's Army, equipped to go out into the world like the Apostles, to live and spread the Gospel.

After that experience at Pentecost, the Apostles were changed men. The Apostles were marked by the Holy Spirit. The same is true for us in Confirmation. Just like Baptism, Confirmation can only be received once, and leaves on our souls an indelible imprint, the seal of the Holy Spirit. We cannot see it, but recalling that we are specially marked should inspire us to be witnesses to Christ. We should be different than those in the world, because spiritually we are different. Does our life reflect that the Holy Spirit has set His seal upon us at Confirmation? Do we, as confirmed Catholics, live differently than others in the world? At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon the first disciples of Jesus as tongues of flame, to set them on fire with the grace of God. How is that flame of the Holy Spirit in our life? Are we on fire with the grace of God, or has that fire of the Holy Spirit that we received at Confirmation extinguished and blown out?

Hoy celebramos el Día de Pentecostés y reflexionamos sobre el Espíritu Santo, que es Dios y la Tercera Perso-na de la Santísima Trinidad. Diez días después de la Ascensión de Jesús al Cielo (cincuenta días después de la Resurrección de Jesús de entre los muertos), los primeros discípulos de Jesús estaban en el mismo cuarto supe-rior de la Última Cena esperando en oración por la venida del Espíritu Santo. La fiesta de Pentecostés es el tercer día sagrado más importante celebrado dentro de la Iglesia, la Pascua siendo la primera más importante y Navidad la segunda. Pentecostés es la celebración del Espíritu Santo mismo a causa de quien Él es, la Tercera Persona de la Santísima Trinidad, lo que hace por nosotros como individuos y lo que hace por la Iglesia en su conjunto. La confirmación es un derramamiento especial del Espíritu Santo, igual que en Pentecostés. La Iglesia Cató-lica y la Iglesia Ortodoxa tienen dos Sacramentos a través de los cuales el Espíritu Santo descendió sobre nosotros: Bautismo y Confirmación. En el Sacramento del Bautis-mo, la Gracia de Dios viene sobre nosotros a través del Espíritu Santo que desciende sobre nosotros, nos limpia del pecado y nos hace hijos de Dios. En el Sacramento de la Confirmación, estamos capacitados por el Espíritu Santo para no sólo convertirnos en hijos, sino soldados de Dios, verdaderos Caballeros del Reino de Dios. Fortifi-cados por el Espíritu Santo y armados con Sus Dones, formamos parte del Ejército de Dios, equipado para salir al mundo como los Apóstoles, para vivir y difundir el Evangelio. Después de esa experiencia en Pentecostés, los Após-toles fueron hombres cambiados. Los Apóstoles fueron marcados por el Espíritu Santo. Lo mismo pasa con noso-tros en la Confirmación. Al igual que el Bautismo, la Confirmación sólo puede ser recibida una vez y deja en nuestras almas una huella indeleble, el sello del Espíritu Santo. No podemos verlo, pero recordar que estamos es-pecialmente marcados debe inspirarnos a ser testigos de Cristo. Debemos ser diferentes a los del mundo, porque espiritualmente somos diferentes. ¿Refleja nuestra vida que el Espíritu Santo ha puesto su sello sobre nosotros en la Confirmación? ¿Podemos, como católicos confirmados, vivir de manera diferente que otros en el mundo? En Pentecostés, el Es-píritu Santo vino sobre los primeros discípulos de Jesús como lenguas de fuego, para incendiarlas con la gracia de Dios. ¿Cómo es esa llama del Espíritu Santo en nuestra vida? ¿Estamos encendidos con la gracia de Dios, o tiene ese fuego del Espíritu Santo que recibimos en la Confirmación extinguida y apagada? Felicitaciones a nuestra clase de octavo grado de la escuela de San José por su graduación. Que Dios los bendiga y guíe la Clase de 2017. Celebrujemy dziś Święto Zesłania Ducha Świętego i nasze myśli krążą właśnie wokół Niego – Trzeciej Osoby Trójcy Świętej. Dziesięć dni po Wniebowstąpieniu Jezusa (to jest 50 dni po Jego Zmartwychwstaniu), pierwsi uczniowie Chrystusa zgromadzili się w pokoju, gdzie spożywana była Ostatnia Wieczerza, i pogrążeni w modlitwie oczekiwali przyjścia Ducha Świętego. Święto Zesłania jest trzecim najważniejszym świętem w Kościele Katolickim (zaraz po Wielkanocy i Bożym Narodzeniu). Dzisiejsze Święto jest celebracją tego, kim Duch Święty jest, co On robi dla każdego z nas, oraz co robi dla całego Kościoła. Widzicie tutaj „Zesłanie Ducha Świętego” - fresk pochodzący z wiedeńskiego kościoła Altlerchenfelder. Święto Zesłania nazywa się „urodzinami Kościoła”, jako że to wówczas Duch zstąpił na uczniów Jezusa i uzdolnił ich do głoszenia Dobrej Nowiny aż po krańce ziemi. Święto Zesłania jest bezpośrednio związane z Sakramentem

Bierzmowania. Bierzmowanie zdaje się być jednym z najbardziej zaniedbywanych przez wiernych sakramentów. Jego przyjęcie nie jest konieczne dla naszego zbawienia, ale dla naszego pełnego członkostwa w Kościele już tak. „Należy zatem wyjaśniać wiernym, że przyjęcie tego sakramentu jest konieczne jako dopełnienie łaski chrztu. Istotnie, przez sakrament bierzmowania (ochrzczeni) jeszcze ściślej wiążą się z Kościołem, otrzymują szczególną moc Ducha Świętego i w ten sposób jeszcze mocniej zobowiązani są, jako prawdziwi świadkowie Chrystusa, do szerzenia wiary słowem i uczynkiem oraz do bronienia jej” (Katechizm Kościoła Katolickiego 1285). Podczas Bierzmowania w szczególny sposób objawia się nam Duch Święty, podobnie jak to uczynił dla Uczniów w pierwsze Święto Zesłania. W Kościołach Katolickim i Prawosławnym istnieją dwa sakramenty, za pomocą których otrzymujemy dary Ducha: Chrzest oraz Bierzmowanie. W pierwszym przypadku, Łaskę Bożą niesie Duch Święty, który obmywa nas z grzechu i czyni Dziećmi Bożymi. W drugim przypadku, dzięki mocy Ducha stajemy się nie tylko Dziećmi Bożymi, lecz Jego żołnierzami – prawdziwymi rycerzami Królestwa Niebieskiego. Mocni Duchem Świętym i uzbrojeni w Jego Dary, stajemy się częścią Armii Pana, gotowi, by wzorem Apostołów głosić światu Ewangelię. Po doświadczeniu Zesłania, Apostołowie byli już innymi ludźmi. Zostali naznaczeni Duchem Świętym. Podobnie dzieje się z nami w czasie Bierzmowania. Podobnie jak do Chrztu, do sakramentu Bierzmowania przystępuje się tylko raz i pozostawia on w naszej duszy nieusuwalny ślad. Chociaż jest on niewidoczny, samo jego wspomnienie powinno być dla nas zachętą do świadczenia o Chrystusie. Powinniśmy zachować się inaczej, niż ludzie świata, bowiem różnimy się od nich duchowo. Czy nasze codzienne życie jest dowodem na to, że zstąpił na nas Duch Święty? Czy jako bierzmowani katolicy żyjemy inaczej niż reszta świata? Duch Święty, pod postacią języków ognia, zstąpił na pierwszych uczniów Jezusa, aby rozpalić w nich łaskę Boga. Czy ta łaska płonie również w nas? Czy może ten płomień Ducha Świętego, rozpalony w nas podczas Bierzmowania, dawno już zgasł? Serdecznie gratulujemy wszystkim naszym ośmioklasistom u kresu ich szkolnej przygody. Niechaj Bóg stale im błogosławi i prowadzi ich. Gratulacje dla Pani Theresy Galus – zdobywczyni tytułu „Kobieta Roku” archidiecezjalnej Rady Kobiet Katolickich.
