About…

Deb Abberton, alto

From fronting a GB band to singing baritone in a barbershop quartet to playing a brother in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Deb Abberton is always looking for voices to sing close harmony with. Singing with UNH's Notables was her first brush with a cappella and she loves all aspects of it, the ringing chords, the ability to sing anywhere the pitch pipe can go, and the never-ending quest for locations with great natural reverb (bathrooms, elevators, an underground subway stop in Montreal).

Bethany Aiken, alto

Bethany Aiken graduated in 2004 from Oberlin College, where she studied English (with a concentration in creative writing) as well as music history and theory. While not busy juggling majors, Bethany sang with the Oberlin College Choir, including two appearances with the Cleveland Orchestra under Franz Welser-Möst. She also performed with and co-directed a women's a cappella group called the Cleftomaniacs, served as editor and treasurer of the literary magazine Enchiridion, and played the piano for the Oberlin Musical Theater Association's productions of Sweeney Todd, Pippin, and The Last Five Years. Back in the Boston area, Bethany finds musical involvement a welcome respite from the grand quest to pay off student loans and get health insurance, which is a fancy way of saying that she really looks forward to Wednesday night rehearsals.

Chad Bergeron, tenor

Chad began singing in grade school as a way to get out of class a few times a week. It quickly turned into a serious hobby when he fell in love with it. Along the way he's sung everything from Bass to Alto, 12th Century to 21st Century. After a few years masquerading as an instrumentalist, he decided to go back to his vocal roots. Chad is enthusiastic about joining None of the Above, returning to the challenges and joys of singing a cappella, and of taking the hobby to the next level.

Matt Ettore, baritone/director

Matt Ettore is a 1995 graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA. While a student, he was active in the music program at WPI, in particular with the WPI Glee Club, a chorus of 40-50 men’s voices. As part of his ‘humanities sufficiency’ in choral conducting, Mr. Ettore conducted a small choir and chamber orchestra in a performance of Mozart’s ‘Coronation’ Mass (K317). In addition, he was the first student director of the contemporary a cappella group ‘Simple Harmonic Motion’. After graduation (1995 – 1996), he was assistant director to Professor Louis J. Curran of the WPI Glee Club. In 1996, Matt became director of the Boston University Choral Society, a mixed chorus open to anyone within the University. While director (1996 – 2000), he led the group in collegiate exchange concerts, performances of major works such as Poulenc’s Gloria, Charpentier’s Te Deum, and Mozart’s Te Deum, the group’s first tour to Montreal and its first recording “et in terra…vox!” He has also performed with the New England Conservatory Camerata under the direction of Lorna Cooke deVaron. From 1999 – 2001, he was cantor at Most Precious Blood Church in Dover, MA. From 2001 to 2004, he was cantor and assistant choir director at St. George’s Church in Worcester, MA. He is currently a cantor here at St. Mary Parish, NOTA’s “home base”.

Bob Gervais, tenor

A 1986 graduate of the University of Lowell, Bob received his B.M. in Music and Business as a voice major where he performed with the U-Lowell Chamber Singers and their madrigal group Consortium Artis Musicae. Bob's main performing experience is in musical theater, having performed in about 30 productions including roles in Into the Woods, Little Shop, Joseph, and Lucky Stiff. He has also produced about 18 productions, and has directed and music directed several as well. Bob was a founding director of Online Repertory in Upton, MA and was on the board of directors during their 11-year tenure as a company. After a break in singing for several years, he is excited about singing again and working with NOTA.

Elyssa Miller, alto/tenor

Elyssa is thrilled to be singing with None of the Above! Many, many moons ago, while an undergraduate at Boston University, she sang in the B.U. Choral Society and the Chamber Choir. She also sang briefly with In Choro Novo and the a cappella group Allegrettos. In recent years, she has taught herself to play guitar, sang with a choir of engineers in Brazil (don’t ask…), and has sung loudly in the car in the hopes of being discovered by someone in the next lane. No luck yet, but you never know…

Gwenne Lopshire, soprano

Gwenne Lopshire received her B.A. in Music Performance with Voice Emphasis in 2001 from Eastern Nazarene College, Quincy, MA. During her studies, she had the opportunity to sing and tour with three very different choirs. She joined the A Cappella Choir in her freshman year and loved the experience of singing in a large, co-ed group with such a high level of excellence. As a sophomore and a new music major, she joined Choral Union, ENC’s college/community choir, and sang in their annual performance of Handel’s Messiah for six straight years. Gwenne’s favorite group at ENC was the Chamber Singers, a 26-member ensemble that she successfully auditioned for in her junior year. During her three years with the Chamber Singers, she was able to go on two international tours: the first through Eastern Europe, including Romania, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Switzerland and the second to the British Isles and Holland. She also had the experience of recording a unique CD with the group during her last year at ENC. Gwenne is now primarily a soloist and is currently building a repertoire with the help of her voice instructor, Jean Danton; however, she was drawn to None of the Above because of the variety of their repertoire and the prospect of once again contributing to ensemble harmonies. She is also exploring musical theater and recently played the role of Kate in the Sudbury Savoyards’ production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance.

Alisa Manning, soprano

"Canticorum Jubilo!" Alisa Knodle Manning moved to the big city in 1998. As a freshman, she joined the Boston University Choral Society, the only non-auditioned choral group on the BU Campus. She also sang in the Chamber Choir, an auditioned sub-group of the Choral Society. During her sophomore year, she was elected president of the group and, along with the rest of the e-board and Matt Ettore, planned a Spring Break singing tour to Montreal, Canada. The Choral Society had its best performance of the year inside the walls of Concordia University with an audience numbering about 20. Alisa gracefully retired from the e-board and remained a member of the Choral Society until she graduated. As luck would have it, she was hired at Boston University at the same time that the Choral Society was looking for a faculty or staff advisor. Alisa became their advisor until her job took her to the Medical Campus and away from the group. Before 'None of the Above,' Alisa joined the Cambridge Community Chorus for their annual Messiah concert and sang with the Marsh Chapel Choir for a concert cycle. For now though, she is ready to go where ever her voice will take her! Follow that voice!

Jonathan Manning, baritone

Jonathan started with the WPI Glee Club as a rehearsal pianist, but soon started singing as a Baritone as well as a few performance piano accompaniments. He sang with the club for 4 years while in college, and toured with with them to London, Prague, and NYC. After graduation, Jonathan moonlighted with the Boston University Choral Society and a few church choirs. He also sang with the Cambridge Community Chorus for one of their annual Messiah concerts.

Adriana Mincheva, soprano

After a six year absence from the singing scene, Adriana is very excited to be part of None of the Above! Adriana started her singing career with “Bulgarian Nightingale” an acclaimed children’s choir in her native Bulgaria. Throughout high school she was a member of the choir and informal student groups that sang at parties and street corners. The highlight of that period was to perform the musical Oliver!, the first musical in Bulgaria to be performed in English. During her four years of undergraduate study at the American University in Bulgaria she sang with the choir, whose eclectic repertoire ranges from authentic Bulgarian folklore arrangements to acappella versions of jazz and pop melodies. Singing in the choir and taking a number of vocal classes earned her a minor in Fine Arts. During her graduate studies at Umass, Amherst, Adriana joined the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed at the time by Dr. Horace Clarence Boyer. A veteran of eclectic singing, Adriana is embarking on a new singing adventure with Boston’s most enjoyable a-cappella ensemble.

Jocelyn Townshend, alto

Jocelyn Townshend began her singing career in junior choir at her local church in Guilford, CT. Since then, she has sung in plays like Godspell, Jonah and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. In college, Jocelyn joined the Wheaton Whims her freshman year as a bass singer. With the Wheaton Whims, she has sung at places like Faneuil Hall, nursing homes, weddings and even opened for Ball In The House once or twice. Now, Jocelyn is very lucky to have the chance to sing alto in one of the most enjoyable groups ever!
