Thank Dog It’s Friday it far outnumbers the amount of dog turds. And everyone seems to spit – young, old, male, female. Did I miss the memo? It use to be that spitting was a sign of aggressive disrespect (the saying “I spit on your mother’s grave’ clearly communicates this). But now, in the middle of a conver-sation, someone just turns their head aside and spits on the ground. No emphasis, no ‘excuse me’, just snort and spit. And then there’s that other relatively recent gross-out habit that my son calls ‘Snot rockets’, where someone holds one nostril closed and blows the contents out the other onto the ground. UGH!!!

Yum: Fabulous food to check out in Nelson and area. OK, this one isn’t food. But you could easily add food to it – like Ahi Tuna (speaking of which, my automatic spell check would like to suggest ‘Hay, Ahab, Hair and Hail, as corrections for the word ‘Ahi’). I mentioned Max & Irma’s Tiramisu before, but this time, I’m suggesting the Tiramisu Martini at the Hume. Could I have another?

Miscellaneous observations, recom-mendations, issues and what-have-yous worth considering or not this week in Nelson. Street corner: A couple of months ago I read a story in the Globe and Mail about a man who was following Yoko Ono’s Twitter commands. ‘Take your pants off before you fight’ is just one of Ono’s interesting instructions. I read a number of her posts but didn’t feel drawn to participate. Then last week while standing on Baker waiting for the light to change I ended up talking with someone I used to work with. After exchanging updates, she made some suggestions and offered her advice for my current job search. As I walked home considering her ideas, I decided starting the first day of summer to follow the advice and recommendations of anyone I talk to up to Autumnal Equinox. Don’t tell my partner.

Singers WantedMost people bet that the singing contest fad would have faded away long ago, but with FOX’s American Idol ratings still at the top, and NBC’s new show The Voice a certified hit, it would seem that the appetite has yet to be quenched. Enter our own version, 103.5 The Bridge’s Nelson’s Best Singer.

Auditions will be held Friday, July 8th at the Prestige Inn. Then Thurs-day July 28th at the Capitol Theater the finalists will have the opportunity to belt out their favourite karaoke or original tune. Contest is open to groups of up to four people and acous-

tic instruments are allowed as well.Top prize is $200, second prize

$100, third gets $50. Top singer will get the chance to represent Nelson at the first Kootenay’s Best Singer Con-test to be held in the spring of 2012.

Nelson’s Tim Kendrick has been a fighter pilot, spelunker, mountaineer, scuba diver and Search and Rescue volunteer. He’s enjoyed building boats and exploring the B.C. coast, painting and pottery, but photography is the passion that has endured. Kendrick’s photographs—Nel-son-inspired images with unique approaches—are now on display at the Nelson Public Library. Yoda’s short tufts of hair, protrud-ing tongue and long, seemingly hairless legs were enough to earn it the World’s Ugliest Dog title at a Northern California fair.

The 14-year-old Chinese Crested Chihuahua mix won the honor Friday night at the 23rd annual contest at the Sonoma Marin Fair. Owner Terry Schumacher of Hanford, Calif., said the two-pound dog had come a long way since she was found abandoned behind an apartment building.

Schumacher said she first thought the pooch was a rat. Yoda’s distinction comes a year after a

one-eyed Chihuahua named Prin-cess Abby claimed victory.

A pedigree Chinese Crested won in 2008 and another Chinese Crested Chihuahua mix was the ugliest in 2007.

In past years, the winner’s owner has received a $1,000 check.

Hello readers. I was kindly asked to write a column about cycling for this wonderful coffee shop style paper. I like to ride bikes, I work in a bike shop and I live in this beautiful town. So order up your Americano or Latte have a seat and enjoy my piece (I will try to keep it under 200 words).

Nelson is a cyclist’s paradise, a destination for the downhill adventurer with all levels of trails. It has produced world class com-petitors like Mike Kinrade, Kurt Sorge and Garrett Buhler. TV characters Shawn Denny and Dylan Tremble started in a show on OLN called Drop In. Nelson is home to the largest and longest

running film crew Freeride Enter-tainment. freeride-entertainment.com

For the more reserved, we have lush forests lining old rails with refurbished trestles, with lakes and beaches at either end to cool off or have lunch by the water.

The road cycling is world class offering multi day loops or full day epics. With mountain passes, free ferry rides and beautiful country-side, there is no other way to expe-rience the area.

Nelson also has an indoor facil-ity with jumps and ramps for BMX riders and we are in the works on getting an outdoor park so our kids and big kids can enjoy the sunny Nelson summer days.

This is just the start to my rants. I thought I would give you read-ers an overview of Nelson’s cycling scene and I hope to continue writ-ing and will get into a bit more detail on all of the different rides and trails in the area.

Publisher Chad Hansen talks with Trevor Morgan, Vice President of NewLine Skateparks, who have been brought on board to design the park. How long has New Line been building skate parks? We’ve been incorporated since 2001 and have completed about 200 community skate parks in Canada and around the world

What kind of parks do you specialize in? Site built, concrete municipal skateboard parks, so every one is custom designed to what the site will handle but also the interest of the local users and surrounding community.

How does skateboarding compare with more traditional sports be it soccer, hockey, with the number of kids that are involved with it? We are now seeing the participation levels very close to traditional sports such as baseball, hockey and soccer, only a couple million participants difference and the infrastructure now for these structures is just not there when we compare it to something like hockey or soccer. Certainly a large demand across North America and around the world to provide facilities for this activity.

Are you aware any specific munici-pality within Canada that might

have “this many kids are skate-boarding?” In Calgary they commissioned a provincial wide survey that estimated around 36,000 active skateboarders in the city of Calgary.

What are the chances that we will see skateboarding as an Olympic sport? Is it on the horizon? It is on the horizon, it was originally slated for 2012, however, there is some political wrangling within the IOC that is still going on, but all indications are that we will see it for 2016 for sure.

What are the limitations and/or benefits that the size and the shape of the land you have here in Nelson are offering? It’s not the largest parcel of land we have dealt with but it’s interesting in terms of its positioning within the urban context, has some interesting interfaces like that there are surrounding recreation facilities with the arena and pool nearby. This will challenge us as a design team but also from that challenge we come up with some of the most creative solutions so we’re quite optimistic with it and I’m sure we will come up with something great along with the users. There is a forum on the website where people can put in their ideas. We never want to close the door in terms of input on the design so as we continue to work through some sketches and get into more formalized concepts we have an online forum that accessible through our website www.newlineskateparks.com and I believe through the Kootenay Lake Outdoor Skate Park Society they will have information on how to access that on their Facebook page.

The Royal on BakeR Thumping electro beats, banks of synthesizers, live drums and guitars playing tunes from the likes of Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, Deadmau5, etc, all executed with measured professionalism by a somewhat mysterious duo in lab coats. Who are these masked men?!! They are Scientists Of Sound, hailing from Halifax, Nova Scotia. In fact, this duo has impeccable Canadian Indie Rock Cred; Craig Mercer and Aaron Collier were both members of the now defunct Jimmy Swift Band, who toured their brand of danceable jam rock from coast to coast for years. When that project ended, their flirtations with dance music (listen to JSB’s classic “80’s Runway Model”) got a little more serious, and S.O.S. was born.

Some shadows are harder to climb out of than others. Bar-ney Bentall as a dad is about as hard as it gets, with some of the most played songs on Canadian radio (ie Something to Live For, Life Could Be Worse). His son Dustin is doing just that, mak-ing a name for himself the old fashioned way, writing original material that bears no resem-blance to his dad’s stuff and playing it live, really really well!

Country music has played a heavy influence on your music, but can you deliver the goods on the ranch? Can you ride a horse, help out at branding time, string up a fence? Absolutely. My parents bought a ranch when I was thirteen years old and through my teenage years I would work out there in the summer when I wasn’t in school and actually a year before {they bought} I was at my first branding with some family friends outside of Merrit and got a real taste for the country life.

So how do you like your prairie oysters cooked?For the longest time I abstained, For many many years I had no interest but a couple of years ago I got talked into it so I like them well done. {laughing}

Last time you played in Nelson, it was yourself and your fiddle player Kendall Carson, this time it’s the full Outfit. What’s the biggest difference in the live show between the two?We are so fortunate to be able to play together, the two of us and we play so often that we have a really fun show and it’s so natural with just two acoustic instruments and two voices. My big passion for sure is cranking up an electric guitar and rocking out with the band, so when we bring the whole Outfit with some of the

most incredible musicians in the country, it’s a rock and roll show for sure.

An accident in 2004 almost cut your life short, what happened and how much of an influence did those events have on your “Street With No Lights” album that came out after? After high school my buddy and I drove a 69 Impala across the country from Vancouver just for an epic road trip. The day we were heading home we got hit head-on by a truck with a fifth wheel in the Fraser Canyon. It was a miracle that we both survived it. My buddy broke his back and we were both really messed up but at the end of the summer we couldn’t go back to work for quite sometime. That’s when I realized that I wasn’t super happy working construction and I wanted to be writing music. I had the time and the inspiration to write a bunch of songs and made a record the next year and haven’t looked back since.

You guys have a new album under construction. What point in the process are you right now? About halfway through it. In March we went into the studio, spent a couple weeks and recorded all the songs and did it mostly all live off the floor, had a great vibe had a great team and an amazing band. Basically right after that four out of the five of us got on planes and flew in different directions, That left me and the producer to go to town and mix it. We’re looking the end of August to finish it, after our shows.

Dustin Bentall Cont. Are you a fan of road testing new material? Absolutely. It’s kind of interesting the way we work. Sometimes a song gets written right after we {get out of the studio} so we have been playing them for a year and a half. There are a couple that have been around for a long time, then there’s also some new ones that have been completely changed, re-arranged even one song written.

Usually I ask people about their first concert, was your dad (Barney Bentall) your first live concert? My mom told me I saw John Hiatt when I was about three months old from side stage at the PNE in Vancouver, but I’d have to say the first show I remember going to was certainly one of my dad’s. There were also times I got to check them out doing sound checks at the Commodore when I was like ten years old. Before they opened up the bar they let me in for that kind of thing. I would say the most memorable for me would be seeing Limb Lifter open for Oasis at the Pacific Coliseum

in Vancouver. I was twelve and went with my older sister. It was a crazy show, people were rowdy, throwing stuff on stage and the brothers ended up walking off the stage and almost turned into a mini riot.

Speaking of riots, you posted on your blog you’re disappointment with what happened after the Canuck’s loss of game 7. What do you think you would have done if you were in the middle of it? I almost was – I was downtown watching the game at the Commodore. When I left the vibe was alright. People obviously dis-appointed, but got up to Georgia to walk to east end and it was black smoke and mayhem. I was with a friend and we were just like let’s be two less people downtown and headed home.

Ingredients: 1 fresh Halibut fillet 1 package pre sliced prosciutto 1 whole lemon 1 oz olive oil 1 tsp lemon pepper seasoning 3 leaves fresh basil

Method: 1. Season halibut with lemon pepper and wrap with prosciutto 2. Heat oil in sauce pan on medium and sear all sides of halibut until crispy ( about 2 mins per sides ) 3. Finish halibut in oven at 375F for 3 to 4 minutes. Without washing sauce pan squeeze lemon juice into pan and add cold butter on low heat until melted.4. Rough chop basil and stir into lemon butter. 5. Place halibut on plate and drizzle lemon butter over the fish.

Edward Kerr and his family arrived in Nelson in 1898. It was not long before he gained employment and in 1902 purchased the Occidental Hotel. He soon became known as a good and fair man who would never turn away a hungry man.When Edward purchased the lots that now constitute 514 Victoria Street a great many of the Citizenry thought he had taken leave of his senses. The lots were not fully developed and were not much more than a large rocky outcrop. How they could possibly be developed caused many a chin to wag!

Edward saw opportunity where others saw rocks. He knew the City was not in need of more hotels/saloons, there were already eighteen; sleeping rooms and boarding houses were abundant; and, business blocks were soar-ing skyward. He decided the City needed its first apartment build-

ing-self contained suites of the fin-est quality.

To meet these ends Edward hired local Architect, Alexander Carrie (left). Just as today the use of local contractors and trades people was preferred and these were employed by Mr. Carrie.

The most unusual aspect of the entire construction was that all the granite was quarried on the site. The building literally grew from the granite floor.

As the rock was carved into walls the interior of the structure was being constructed one storey at a time. It was much akin to working within a granite shell.

Halfway through construction Edward’s finances were depleted. He had no money to move for-ward, could not pay his debts and could not qualify for a loan due to these debts. This is when a most extraordinary thing happened. All the people on the project met and

decided they would continue with-out payment. As well they would sign an Undertaking that they had been paid in full allowing Edward to apply for and receive a $25,000 building loan from Great West Life. This act of generosity allowed the Kerr’s Apartments to go on to completion. All the debts were dis-charged in full.

The Kerr’s Apartments were completed at a cost of $60,000.00. Considerable expense was saved quarrying the rock on site so one can only imagine the amount of money that was earmarked for the interior of the building!

Kerr’s Apartments consisted of thirty-seven suites. It was soon evi-dent no expense had been spared as the marble steps led into a gleam-ing foyer of highly polished stone and wood. The apartments ranged in size from three to seven spa-cious, furnished rooms with plas-tered walls and steam heated radia-

tors. The windows were tall, wide and deep leaving window wells for seats or knickknacks.

Time had not been kind to this once stately structure. Over the years her façade presented a build-ing that had faded both inside and out. Her paint had worn and her elegance transplanted with areas of disrepair and convenient quick fixes. Her once high rental rate was reduced to low cost housing.

On January 5th fire gutted the interior displacing all her tenants. Her once proud and erect walls that so broadly welcomed the upper crust of Nelson society sup-port a gaping hole with blackened and boarded windows.
