WEST JEFFERSON-Good food, good music and a good time - these are all part of West Jefferson’s annual Christmas in July festival.

Ashe County’s premier summer event, 2017 is Christmas in July’s 31st annual cel-ebration. Arts and crafts, community and service groups, and food vendors will be there along with great music and entertain-ment.

The festival opens on Friday evening, June 30 with live music running from 3-10 p.m., with food vendors, music and street dances getting underway at 5 p.m.

On Saturday July 1, the action picks back up at 9 a.m. and runs through 7 p.m. Bring a lawn chair and your dancing shoes.

afternoon. This will give our tourists and visitors something fun to do

Food vendors will offer American, Orien-tal and Greek food as well as your favorite fair treats.

A group of Civil War re-enactors will also gather to engage in mock battles and bring a little piece of the War Between The States to life. They’ll also be available to answer questions about soldiers and pose

The Christmas in July Festival can trace its roots to 1987, when it began as a cel-ebration of everything the local Christmas Tree industry brings to Ashe County and the High Country, and still counts itself among the best old fashioned summer festivals in the south.

The event has remained a popular draw

for West Jefferson over the past three decades, and has served as a sweet sum-mertime introduction for thousands of visitors.

The festival is a free-admission event held in Downtown West Jefferson featur-ing the very best in traditional mountain music, handmade arts & crafts vendors throughout the region while still celebrat-ing the Christmas Tree industry. Chil-dren’s activities, roving performers, fun competitions, non-profits and the Farm-ers’ Market are also part of the festival each year.

ClayBank to perform at Christmas in July

Hailing from the mountains of western North Carolina, an area that is steeped in the musical heritage of bluegrass, old-time and gospel music, ClayBank is currently in the studio working on their debut album for Rural Rhythm Records scheduled for release in the fall.

ClayBank has been turning heads in the Bluegrass community ever since their formation in early 2015. The band took the grand prize at the 2016 band competition at RenoFest (an event hon-oring the late and legendary musician, Don Reno) and 3rd place honors this year at the 2016 SPBGMA (Society for

the Preservation of Bluegrass Music) National Band Championship.

ClayBank consists of youngsters Zack Arnold on mandolin and vocals and Jacob Greer on guitar and vocals along with Tyler Thompson on banjo and vocals and Gary Trivette on bass and vocals. The band takes their name from the community of ClayBank near West Jefferson that is not only where they meet together to hone their craft but the place that embodies the very spirit of the music they play.

The Lucky Strikes BandThe Lucky Strikes are a classic jazz band that prides itself on professionalism, creativ-

The group has a history dating back to at least 2009, and is composed of members Jim Fleri, Doug Brantz, Steve Roark and Jamie Blanton.

The Lucky Strikes will take to the Main Stage from 6:30-8 p.m. on Friday June 30.

Buck Haggard combines love of Buck Owens, Merle Haggard into one great show

The Buck Haggard Band is a classic country music band named for two of the members musical heroes - Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. The band has a great selection of songs taken from that era in country music that fans love.

Members of the Buck Haggard Band are George Wilson, lead and harmony vocals and rhythm guitar, Ed Main, lead and harmony vocals, lead guitar and

piano, Tracy Brown, lead and harmony vocals and bass; Jimmy C. Cannon, steel guitar; and Geg Russell, drums.

The Buck Haggard Band’s music cov-ers lots of old favorites that will have everyone on their feet dancing.

Buck Haggard band will perform on the festival Main Stage on Friday June 30 from 8:30-10 p.m.

Back Porch Bluegrass

Back Porch Bluegrass was formed in February of 2005 and includes David Culler with vocals and guitar, Tony Joines with banjo, Jim Matthews with upright bass and Wes Tuttle with the mandolin and fiddle and Jake Joines.

The group is based in North Wil-kesboro and have played events such as Carolina in the Fall, ChickenFest, MusicFest in Sugar Grove, the Valle Crucis Creekside Bluegrass Festival, Got to be NC Festival, North Carolina

State Fair, The Hunger and Health Coalition Festival, the Winston Cup Museum, Greensboro CAFE and Happy Valley Old Time Fiddlers Con-vention.

BackPorch Bluegrass has also per-formed for weddings, receptions, fraternity parties, private parties and bluegrass gospel concerts in addition to being a Christmas in July favorite.

They’ll perform on the Main Stage on Saturday July 1, from 9-10 a.m.

Amantha Mill closes out Christmas in JulyAmantha Mill, a folk/bluegrass band

from neighboring Boone, returns to the stage at Christmas In July.

Rebecca Eggers-Gryder, Bill Helms, John Cockman, Kevin Eller and Dustin Petrey make up the band, named after a mill in the tiny Aman-tha community of Watauga County. According to the band, the mill was washed away in a flood years ago, but you can still see where the mill once

stood in the Cove Creek community.Amantha Mill plays many types of

music ranging from traditional blue-grass to swing, cowboy, country and American/Roots music.

The band has produced multiple albums with its most recent collection in November 2015.

They’ll take to the Main Stage from 6-7 p.m. on Saturday July 1.

Taylon Hope MillerWhen she makes it big one day you

can say you heard her at Christmas in July first.

Ashe County’s own Taylon Hope Miller will perform on the Com-munity Stage from 12-12:30 p.m. on Saturday July 1.

The West Jefferson-based vocalist and musician has received numer-ous award and performed at venues across the country. Last year she was named the “Rising Star” at the King Country Agape Fest in Glen Rose, Texas and was named among five nominees for the “Youth in Music” Award for the 2015 Inspirational Country Music Awards in Nashville.

Among other honors, she was named among the top four nominees for “Junior Artist of the Year” for the 2016 Josie Awards for Independent Artists which was held in Nashville, TN in September 2016, and ultimate-ly brought home the honor.

Elkville String BandThe Elkville String Band will take to

the Main Stage at Christmas in July on Saturday July 1, from 11 a.m.-12 p.m.

The band was formed in 2001 by Jerry Lankford, editor of The Record newspa-per in North Wilkesboro to perform for the annual play “Tom Dooley, A Wilkes County Legend” presented by the Wilkes Playmakers and has been at it ever since.

The Elkville String Band takes its name from the Wilkes County town of Elkville - now known as Ferguson - where Tom Dooley was born.

Today the Elkville String Band is com-prised of Jim Lloyd, Herb Key, Bill Wil-liams, Trevor McKenzie and Eddie Ogle.

One of the most popular songs in their repertory is “Otto Wood the Bandit,” which immortalizes the story of a local outlaw and accomplished jail breaker who was gunned down by the police in 1930. First recorded by the Carolina Bud-dies in 1931, “Otto Wood the Bandit”

has become the Elkville String Band’s signature song and can be found on sev-eral of the band’s recordings. In 2012, the band performed music for the play Otto Wood the Bandit by Jerry Lankford and presented at The Record Park in North Wilkesboro.

Jeff Little to perform at Christmas in JulyWith few exceptions, the piano does

not play a prominent part in Appala-chian or Americana music, and is rare-ly the lead instrument. But Jeff Little is an exception – and a remarkable one. His distinctive two-handed style, much influenced by the mountain flat-picked guitar tradition, is breathtaking in its speed, precision and clarity.

Miller will perform on Christmas in July’s Main Stage from 1-2 p.m. on Sat-urday July 1.

Little’s involvement with fiddle tunes, old time country, and tradi-tional blues dates to his growing up in Boone, North Carolina, where his family, owned a music shop. The shop was a regular gathering place for musi-cians who would just stop by to pick a few tunes. At an early age Jeff would regularly sit in with many of the musi-cians from the region, including one of America’s most influential musicians: Doc Watson. These influences helped

shape Jeff’s approach to the piano which is based on these deep musical traditions. But there is also an echo of more contemporary mountain tradition in Jeff’s performances.

Today, Jeff as well as his trio stay busy traveling the country performing concerts with an energy and dedica-tion to their music that is evident at every show. Performances include The Smithsonian Institution, The National Folk Festival, American Piano Masters, Merlefest, and many festivals, perform-ing arts centers, colleges and music venues throughout the US. He has also taken his traditional piano style around the world on U.S. government good-will tours, performing in Sri Lanka, Bahrain, Oman, France and Tanzania. Crooked Road Ramblers to perform at Christmas in July

Concertgoers are in for an old-time dance party when regional favorites the Crooked Road Ramblers grace the Main Stage at Christmas in July on Saturday, July 1 from 10-11 a.m.

Hailing from Southwest Virginia, the Crooked Road Ramblers are steeped in the traditional music of the Blue Ridge. They have played at the Carter Fam-

ily Fold, Wayne Henderson Festival, HoustonFest, and many venues across Virginia and North Carolina.

They claimed first place in the old-time band category at the Ashe County, Alleghany County, Fries, and Union Grove fiddlers conventions in addition to second place at the Galax Old Fiddler’s Convention.

Dollar BrothersThe Dollar Bothers provide a high energy, family ori-

ented bluegrass stage show. The Dollar Brothers are a traditional bluegrass band from Watauga and Ashe County, North Carolina.

Darrell Dollar, lead singer and older brother to Barry and Wade, plays mandolin and has written some songs for the band. Wade Dollar, the youngest of the three brothers, plays guitar, sings tenor and lead and also plays claw hammer banjo and dobro.

Tim Norris, banjo player, is a cousin to the Dollar Broth-ers. Tim also sings, plays guitar and the piano.

J.M. Trivette from Zionville plays bass and sings.The Dollar Brothers have shared the stage with such

luminaries as Bill Monroe, Jim and Jesse, The Seldom Scene, Doyle Lawson, The Osborne Brothers and others.

The Dollar Brothers love doing the standards as well as doing some of their own compositions on stage. Gospel Music is also a very large part of the Dollar Brothers.

The Dollar Brothers have been in bluegrass for over twenty five years, they really enjoy what they do, and what they share with others.

The Dollar Brothers are set to perform on the Main Stage on Saturday July 1 from 4-5 p.m.

Declaration of IndependenceWhen in the Course of human events,

it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

—That to secure these rights, Govern-ments are instituted among Men, deriv-ing their just powers from the consent of the governed,

—That whenever any Form of Govern-ment becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Govern-ment, laying its foundation on such prin-ciples and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more dis-posed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. *He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for

the public good.*He has forbidden his Governors

to pass Laws of immediate and press-ing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

*He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relin-quish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

*He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

*He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

*For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

*He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to com-pleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circum-stances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civi-lized nation.

*He has constrained our fellow Citi-zens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends

and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in atten-tions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us.
