A Message from Fr. Davy: Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear friend, On this thirteenth Sunday, the Church encourages us to see Christ in others and welcome them as

if we welcome Jesus. This is very appropriate as we begin to celebrate Mass in our church after 3 months.

Jesus is welcoming us to the sanctuary to celebrate Mass and receive the Holy Eucharist. The readings also

remind us to be sensitive to the needs of others in order to make a difference in their lives.

In the first reading of this Sunday, from the 2 Kings, we read about the generosity of the Shunem couple

towards Elisha. When they welcomed him warmly he brought them blessing and joy. When we welcome

others to our residence generously we receive blessings.

The couple showed great interest to welcome Elisha on the other hand, Elisha was equally concerned and

sensitive to the needs of this Shunem couple. So, rather than over burden them with more request or exploit

their generosity, he prayed for them, and blessed them through his prophetic ministry. Thus, his presence was

indeed a blessing to this house, rather than a burden.

In the second reading, Saint Paul reminds how Christ offered us new life through our baptism. He offered

himself not for his own sake but for the sake of our salvation. By accepting him through our baptism, and

acknowledging him through our life we have become one with him in death and in life. By welcoming Christ,

we have received a share in his glorious life. We became heirs not slaves. Christ lives in others. So, we must

equally welcome him in others, including, in the least of our brethren. This was the inspiration of saint

Theresa of Calcutta to serve the poor and take of the orphans and sick. She saw the image of Jesus in them

and treated them as if she did to Jesus.

Through today’s gospel, Christ reminds us on the need to welcome others for His sake. Through generosity

and hospitality, like the Shunem family in our first reading, we could attract God’s blessings to our home and

family. Through these, our lives and fortunes could be transformed as well.

We take a lot of things for granted. There are thousands of people across the globe under the threat of the

pandemic, COVID 19. There are thousands dying daily without getting proper medical facilities or health

care. We should show concern to others and their needs. We should nurture the sense of sacredness not only

to Christ but also to our sisters and brothers around us.

It is important to ask ourselves: Do we welcome others generously? Are we sensitive to their needs? Is our

presence a source of blessing to the people we meet or that meet us? Does it really make any difference, or is

it an added burden to their life? What good do I bring to the life of others?

Brooklyn Diocese Consecrated to the

Sacred Heart of Jesus

With appeals for reparation for sin and the ongoing sanctification of priests,

Most Rev. Nicholas DiMarzio consecrated the Diocese of Brooklyn to

the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Friday, June 19.

Bishop said in his homily: “The consecration to the Sacred Heart reminds us that we know the love of God, that the Father has given us in

Jesus, his Son. The Son who died and rose for us. We also recognize that we must still make reparation for our sins and the sins of others because God’s love is offended by sin, when we turn

away from God.”

Chrism Mass

On Friday, June 19th, I was privileged to represent the Catholic parishes in

Williamsburg and Greenpoint at the Chrism Mass in St. Joseph’s

Co-Cathedral. This special Mass usually is offered during Holy Week (between

Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday) where the Holy Oils used during the year are

consecrated by the bishop and the priests of the diocese gather to reaffirm

their priesthood. Bishop DiMarzio gave a beautiful homily and this Consecration of the Diocese of Brooklyn I am sure will be a source of graces and protection as we take these first steps in a post-COVID

environment.
