IN FLIGHTMurray Green, Camrose Booster

Riders in the annual MS Bike Tour from Leduc to Camrose were numerous and they raised a lot of money for Multiple Sclerosis research on June 11 and 12. About 2,037 partici-pants on 211 teams made the trek to Camrose and raised around $1.79 million.

ROCKET LAUNCHLori Larsen, Camrose Booster

Ryley Corcoran pumped up pressure of his homemade rocket launcher as City of Camrose Wildlife and Greenspace Stewardship coordinator Katherine Rogers releases it at the perfect time. The end result was a recycled plastic bottle rocket blasting several feet into the air. The demonstration was part of the Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society summer events. The next event is Here Comes the Sun held at Stoney Creek Centre June 30 at 7 p.m.

511 Alberta means safer roads511 Alberta has

launched two new platforms designed to help Albertans navigate our roads and high-ways year-round.

The Citizen Reporter app will empower Albertans to report road conditions once they have taken an online training course. The Citizen Reporter app will work on

both Android and iPhone and was launched recently.

511 Alberta has also launched an updated web-site that allows Albertans to track the more than 600 snowplows operated by Alberta Transportation con-tractors who maintain our highway network throughout the winter.

For safety reasons, both of these enhancements should be used prior to leav-ing or after arriving at your destination, not while on the road.

“We all play a part in keeping Alberta’s win-ter roads safe,” said Brian Mason, Minister of Trans-portation.

Taking the stress out of examsBy Lori Larsen

Almost every person can relate to the stress induced by having to write a test or exam.

Couple that with many of the other pressures that attach themselves to students and for some it can be over-whelming.

The high school leader-ship students at Our Lady Mount Pleasant have taken it upon themselves to assist in alleviating some of the stress that accompanies writing exams.

On their own initiative they organized a de-stress room where students can go to relax and use healthy choices to lower their anxiety.

“We attended a leader-ship conference in Calgary,” said Grade 10 leadership student Kaleigh Taschuk. “We needed to do a final proj-ect of what we had learned and take the skills from the conference and bring it back to our schools.

CityLights Church to host two summer campsBy Murray Green

Two summer camps will keep children busy at the CityLights Church.

A CityLights Soccer camp will teach children skills in the sport, as well as life skills through religion.

Camp instructor Michael Ioanidis invites players ages six to 12 to the sport camp that runs July 25 to 29. The soccer camp will be held at Rudy Swanson #5 field, Monday

to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Friday, the camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a barbecue for the entire families of the participants.

“The registration fee covers the cost of a t-shirt and a soccer ball. We will be teaching the children about soccer and incorporate teaching about Jesus as well,” explained Ioanidis. “Before lunch we will have a coach’s

corner, where we will talk about the Bible, principles and character.”

To register email [email protected] or call the church at 780-672-4261. The deadline is July 4.

Vacation Bible SchoolCityLights will also

be holding a Vacation Bible School entitled Sun Sparks Labs, Aug. 8 to 12.

The hours from Monday

to Thursday are 9 a.m. to noon and on Friday it will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a sports day.

“We are going to have games, crafts, snacks, Bible stories and science experiments,” said Ioanidis, who will be assisting Nadine Shingoose in running the camp. “That camp will be held here at the church. Registration forms are available at the church.”

For more information call the church at 780-672-4261. You are asked to register by July 29.

“We wanted to have outreach camps to attract children and teach them about life skills,” he added. “I like the themes of soccer and science labs. Hopefully, we get a lot of children registered because it is going to be fun.”

Wild Rose Co-operative Association general manager Carol Rollheiser, left, and Camrose store deli supervisor Crystal Desjarlis presented fuel gift cards for a year to loyal Co-op customer Bernice Heck, who won free fuel for a year in the Co-op Fuel Up to Win contest.

Camrose resident wins fuel for a yearBy Dan Jensen

Camrose resident Bernice Heck was the winner of free fuel for a year in Co-op’s Fuel Up to Win Contest.

She received a fuel gift card valued at $3,200 at the Wild Rose Co-operative Association’s downtown gas bar April 28.

“We are really excited that one of our loyal mem-bers is a winner,” said Wild Rose Co-operative general manager Carol Rollheiser.

The Co-op Fuel Up to Win contest ran from Feb-ruary to April. Customers received game tickets and collector’s cards when pur-chasing fuel, food or home building supplies at Wild Rose Co-op’s Camrose, Killam and Sedgewick locations. Inside the game tickets were coupons,

instant prizes, online dig-ital PIN codes to enter draws, and game pieces which gave the chance of winning, along with the free gas, a $100,000 grand prize, free groceries for

a year, Dyson vacuums, vacation getaways, Troy Built lawn mowers, Broil King barbecues and more.

“I knew I was a win-ner when I had all the columns filled (with game

pieces) but I didn’t want to get my hopes up until I received confirmation,” said Heck. “I had to send the collection card away to Ontario.”

Heck ac tua l ly received the hardest to obtain game piece early on in the contest. After that it just spending enough to collect all the pieces.

The association had just under 1,000 instant winners who received con-test prizes of everything from pizza and coffee to $5 off their fuel purchase.

Fuel Up to Win is a promotion Co-op has been running for four years. The winner of this year’s grand prize of $100,000 cash plus a $25,000 donation to the winner’s community came from Unity, Saskatchewan.

Augustanashares the feats of students and staff with crowd

Augustana dean Dr. Allen Berger highlighted the 2015-16 accomplishments of faculty and students at the university’s spring soiree April 26.

Augustana faculty mem-bers published four books and a minimum of 28 peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters. They also delivered over 60 papers at professional conferences and shared their artistic talents in two juried exhibits and multiple concerts.

Augustana faculty, over the course of the year, were recognized with the Confed-eration of Alberta Faculty Associations’ Distinguished Academic Award, a presti-gious McCalla Award from the University of Alberta, and the Eldon and Anne Foot Visual Arts Prize.

Faculty members received at least 18 competi-tive internal grants from the University of Alberta.

Fifteen Augustana stu-dent athletes were named to all-conference teams, and two were named CCAA All-Canadian athletes.

“Perhaps more impor-tant,” said Berger, “35 stu-dent athletes received the CCAA National Scholar Award – across the coun-try the average per univer-sity is nine. An additional 10 Augustana student athletes in non-CCAA sports earned academic recognition from the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.”

Over 460 Augustana students in 35 classes across 10 disciplines participated in 508 community service learning placements with local organizations and the regional business commu-nity.

“As a result of the many placements related to envi-ronmental concerns and sustainability, Augustana’s CSL program is a finalist for an Emerald Award from the Alberta Emerald Foun-dation,” said Berger.

The Augustana Campus will welcome 40 research assistants and interns this summer from its own stu-dent body, as well as other Canadian institutions and overseas universities.

Community OutreachIn addition to hosting

Reading University for the seventh year and the Cam-rose Easter Eggs-travaganza for the fifth year, Augustana launched (in collaboration with the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre) a Grade 7 Science Fair, which brought over 200 junior high students to campus.

YEAROF THE

Summer arts program offers plenty of activitiesBy Murray Green

The Creative Arts Sum-mer Program prides itself on providing children with fun, creativity and excitement every summer at the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre.

The program will be offered from July 4 to Aug. 19 during the week from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. With prior arrangements, children can stay until 5 p.m.

The program has two leaders who will be guiding children on many adventures and learning experiences from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“I want to work with chil-dren in the future and I’ve helped with Girl Guides too. We not only get to do crafts with children, but games and sports days with children. I want to make a fun summer for everyone,” said Lindsay Ault, coordinator of the sum-mer arts program, who is an English student at the Uni-versity of Alberta Augustana Campus and wants to become a teacher.

She is working with Ryan White, summer arts assistant for the program. The former Bawlf student is going to Van-guard College in Edmonton.

“I’ve also worked a lot with children through youth groups and VBS (Vacation Bible School). I actually just got back from a mission over-seas with a day camp,” shared Ryan. “I look forward to being with the children and mak-ing sure they have a great summer.”

Both leaders said they will have as much fun as the children. “There is a trial and error in planning crafts that work. We wanted to have some cool things in a wide variety such as drama, crafts and field trips. We have monsters, superheroes, Harry Potter and survivor themes,” Lindsay added.

Some of the other planned events include an amazing race day, Canadian day, super heroes, trips to the library and yee haw theme that leads to watching the Big Valley Jam-boree parade.

“We will be working with the Camrose Public Library on some days, going to the muse-ums and going to the spray park for activities,” she added.

“You don’t have to feel that your children have to attend everyday. You can drop your children off for the day. They can attend every day or which ever days work for the family,” explained Lindsay. “It can be one day, or the entire summer. The program is pretty flexible. Sometimes the family goes on vacation, so they miss a week. It all depends on the family schedule.”

The leaders looked at last year’s schedule first. “Then we added things that we wanted to do and would have enjoyed doing back when we were chil-

dren,” said Ryan. “We wanted to include some science activi-ties, not just arts.”

One of Lindsay’s favourite days will be all about trains. “We are going to get large boxes and make a train car that children can wear and run around to make a train We are also going to the rail-way museum.”

Ryan enjoys themes relat-ed to television shows such as

Survivor and The Amazing Race. “Our CSI day will follow the television show and we get to do all of these cool things that they do (fingerprinting, decoding and lasers).”

Lindsay added that the survivor activities are based on a similar one she did with Girl Guides.

“Our program is struc-tured, so that we can adapt to how many children we have

on that particular day,” added Lindsay. “We are also seeking items for crafts such as jars, water bottles and large boxes.”

The arts program will have a limit of 35 children per day. “If you want to get in on a particular day or theme, then you should register early. Those who pre-register will come first over people who just show up for the day. Registra-tion has started.

Parents are asked to sup-ply a swimsuit, sunscreen, bug spray and peanut-free snacks for their child. Service Canada provided a partial grant for the program to make it possible.

The program is hosted by the Camrose Arts Society at 4809-52 Street. For more information contact Lindsay or Jane Cherry-Lemire at 780-672-9949.

Canada DayTwo days before

July 1 and Canada Day, I’m thinking about my mom, Berdie Fowler.

Her birthday was July 1. As I was grow-ing up, we made jokes about how nice it was that across the country, Canadians celebrated her birthday.

It wasn’t until after Mom died that one of her granddaughters told me

something else. In one of their visits in the last months of Mom’s life, my mom told her granddaughter about Mom’s birthdays as a child.

When my mom was a little girl growing up in the East Bittern Lake district, there was always a commu-nity picnic on July 1. There were ball games and sack races and wonderful picnic food and even fireworks.

As a little girl, my mom thought the party was for her – especially the fireworks!

When I heard that, I thought, “What a wonderful thing for a child to believe – that the whole world (or at least her whole world) is celebrating her.”

***Flashback.Mom is in a hospital bed after some kind of “heart

incident.” Because of her condition, she’s in a room that’s visible from the nursing station. Not much priva-cy. The room is used for other things too. Equipment of various kinds is sitting around. There doesn’t seem to be a bedside table, or a place to hang clothes.

I’m looking around thinking it’s not exactly a hos-pitable environment.

Mom is weaker than I’ve ever seen her. She’s lying with her eyes closed, resting. She cannot lift her head up. For the first time in my life, it occurs to me that she’s fragile.

She turns her head to me. I wonder if she’s going to comment on the surroundings. Here is what she says: “I’ve been lying here thinking about how much love there is in the world and how kind people are.”

Then she looks me right in the eye and says, “And I know you worry about not visiting enough. You don’t have to worry. I know you love me. You don’t have to tell me. And I hope you know I love you. I hope every-body knows I love them.”

***On July 1, I’ll be spending the day with about two-

thirds of my mom’s descendants – those who can get to our home town of Camrose on that day. Most of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even two great-great-grandchildren will be there. Cousins who only see each other once a year will reconnect. We’ll miss our Australia family, our Singapore family, and one of our Camrose families who will be away. We’ll meet some new people who are precious to one of Mom’s descendants and brave enough to meet a lot of relatives.

We’ll have the annual killer soccer game. Now that the little guys have grown into teenagers and young adults, the game is a lot tougher for the adults. As I understand the rules, the timing of the game is how long it takes to end up with a tie – which gets harder for the grown-ups every year!

And I know that, as I have in previous years, there will be moments when I look around and marvel at how our little growing-up family of two adults and four kids has grown to more than 40 people on three con-tinents. It’s precious time indeed.

The little girl at the East Bittern Lake picnic could not have imagined this.

***When I look back at my own life, and look forward,

I could not have imagined.Perhaps that’s true for all of us.I think it would be a better world if all of us believed

that the whole world is celebrating us because we are so special.

Happy Canada Day!***

In-patient careOn June 6, a new In-

patient Care Program was launched at Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital. If you were admitted or in hospital during the week of June 6 – you would have met and been cared for by the hospitalist (a doctor based in the hospital).

A hospitalist is a doctor dedicated to being your doctor throughout your entire hospital stay. Their primary responsibil-ity is caring for you while you are in the hospital. Working directly out of Covenant Health, St. Mary’s Hospital, the hos-pitalist is available to you and your family for questions, to discuss your care and attend to any emergencies that may arise.

Evidence gathered from hospitals with existing Inpa-tient Care Programs show that hospitalists can improve qual-

ity of care and patient satisfac-tion. This new Inpatient Care Program at Covenant Health, St. Mary’s Hospital is about enhancing team based, patient centered care and providing the best possible care to the patients.

The development of the In-patient Care Program started in September 2011. Communi-ty family physicians, the Cam-rose Primary Care Network, Covenant Health, St. Mary’s Hospital and Alberta Health Services, Central Zone worked collaboratively to create a pro-gram unique to Camrose and surrounding area. A key com-ponent to successfully imple-menting the Inpatient Care Program was the gathering of relevant data and information to support the approval of an Alternative Relation Plan or (ARP) from Alberta Health.

ARPs have an impor-tant role to play in health care delivery as they can encour-age innovation in the health care system. The aim of the program is to develop compen-sation strategies–other than Fee for Service–to remunerate physicians for providing defined program services. The purpose of an ARP is to provide inno-vation in clinical service, and may enhance the following five dimensions; recruitment and retention, team-based approach, access, patient satis-faction and value for money.

None of this would have been possible without the lead-ership and perseverance of two community family physicians and I would like to highlight and acknowledge the work of both Dr. Bick and Dr. Letley for developing and implementing such a high quality Inpatient Care Program as well as their efforts in recruiting physicians to the program.

I would also like to take this opportunity to show apprecia-tion to all stakeholders involved in the development of the ARP and In-patient Care Program including Alberta Health, the ARP Program Management Office, Covenant Health, St. Mary’s Hospital and Alberta Health Services, Central Zone. In addition to this, I would also like to thank Colleen McKin-stry, clinical director, Camrose Primary Care Network, for her leadership, direction and work in ensuring team based, patient centered care remained in the forefront of this project from day one. It is a privilege to work with such dedicated heath care and community providers.

James agrees to WisconsinBy Murray Green

Former Camrose Kodiaks forward Ethan James has agreed to play hockey for University of Wisconsin Superior next season.

“When we acquired Ethan in a trade we knew he was part of the puzzle we were trying to assemble. His corner work, skill level with the puck and attitude were the main reasons we needed him to become a Kodiak,” said Kodiaks coach and gen-eral manager Boris Rybalka. “He was a big part of our team this year and we could not be more pleased to hear about this.”

Coach Mckenna is excited about having James commit to them for the upcoming year. James is looking forward to starting a new chapter in his life. “I am excited about the opportunity that Coach Mckenna has given me to be a Yellow Jacket. I must thank the Camrose Kodiaks for the opportunity they gave me to achieve my goal of obtaining a scholarship. I am ready to move onto the NCAA and everything that awaits me,” said James.

The Kodiaks organiza-tion congratulates Ethan and his family on this accom-plishment.

James collected 12 goals and 42 points last season. He added three goals and four points in the playoffs. In the AJHL, he scored 29 goals and added 61 assists for 90 points.

Harry KennedyWe are grief stricken at the loss of our dear Harry. After a long and arduous

battle with cancer, Harry passed away on June 22, 2016 at his beautiful home on Lake Joseph, in Muskoka with his adoring wife Darlene by his side.

Born in Camrose, Alberta, Harry was the middle sibling between two sets of twins. Predeceased by his father Alfred, mother Marjory, sister Dorothy and wife Evelyn. Survived by brothers John (Candice) and David Kennedy; and sister Jean Slemko (Clifford); son Jason; daughter Lee Cassie (Travis); and grandchildren Logan, Carter, Jack, Kate and Cooper; and wife Darlene

Harry graduated with a bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta where he went on to have a distinguished career with Xerox in Edmonton. Harry was a rising star, becoming Edmonton’s branch manager before moving to Toronto to become Vice President of Sales. Harry’s entrepreneurial spirit next led him to McDonald’s and the purchase of his first restaurant in Leamington, Ontario. Always seeking opportunity, Harry moved to Fredericton growing his McDonald’s market there to eight stores before selling 23 years later. Harry’s retirement years were filled with travel, golf and enjoying good friends. Not a fan of cold weather, he and Darlene would leave their Muskoka home for winter months to his residence in Florida. Golf was on the calendar most days, believing always his next and eleventh ace could happen in his next round of golf. Harry’s years of playing and love for the game were evident should you engage in discussion or ask for information. He would also be happy anytime to oblige anyone in a rules discussion.

It is said if you take the number of friends you make throughout your life and multiply by 100 it will approximate the number of people you have inspired. Harry was indeed an inspiration.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities (rmhccanada.ca).

A celebration of Harry’s life was held at Oviinbyrd Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, June 28 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

The skies will be blazing with color at dusk, following a full day of events that are taking place on the Cam-rose and District Centennial Museum grounds Friday, July 1.

A full day of activities, entertainment, yard sale and food vendors will begin following the opening cer-emonies at 11 a.m. “We are excited to be welcoming the Together Ensemble, which is an interactive exhibition on global development. It will be a bilingual experience for all ages stimulating conver-sation about Canada’s role in reducing global poverty,” said Jane Cherry-Lemire, committee coordinator.

“Visitors will be invited to climb aboard and explore a custom built truck with 1,000 square feet, travelling coast to coast over the next two years,” Cherry-Lemire stated.

For more information go to www.akfc.ca/together.

“We will be presenting a variety of entertainment again this year,” said Cherry-Lemire.

The music begins with Ethan Harty Fiddle follow-ing the opening ceremonies at approximately 11:45 a.m. followed by a demonstra-tion by Fox TaeKwon-Do, then performances from Kim Neufeld (variety), Carly Reirson (folk), Nick and Cheyanna (pop), Matthew Potter, (blues/roots), Some-where in Between (rock), Fly Away (rock), Alan Ger-ber, (blues/folk/boogie) and Big Smoke Revival, who will close out the night.

The CAMROSE BOOSTER, June 28, 2016 – Page 18

By Arnold MaloneCanada is an excep-

tional place. For decades a committee of the United Nations has ranked Canada in the top five best countries in which to live. Very often Canada has placed first. As we approach our 150th birth-day of Confederation we should know that much of the credit for our nation’s

success flows from our political system. How could it be otherwise?

Canada is now considering changes to how we vote. Most who favour change believe our current system is flawed. That is likely true. However, most who seek change imagined a system without fault. Such a system doesn’t exist; anywhere.

Canada is a representative democracy. We elect representatives to be responsive managers.

The more democratic voting systems foster two crippling concerns. Those that use rank order or proportional representation ballots invite a surge of new parties, which leads to the second concern, the watering-down of leadership.

It is to be expected that special interest groups that are unlikely to capture a parliamentary seat in a constituency would wish to achieve a seat(s) by a percentage of the national vote. Such systems invite more single-issue parties. Currently, our big tent par-ties incorporate a broad spectrum of issues.

Australia switched to proportional representation and the numbers of political parties has skyrocketed. Australia, now, has had five Prime Ministers in six years. Governments hate numerous parties with the complaint, “We can’t get anything done.” Count the times that Israel, brokered by the USA, concluded peace agreements with the Palestinians, only to return to the Knesset and have their government defeated by the minority parties that once supported them. Instead of a Peace Agreement they held an election. In January I had the occasion to meet with a former Member of Parliament for New Zealand, who claimed their switch to proportional representa-tion, “Was the worst mistake his country ever made.”

Since implementing greater democratic voting New Zealand now has 14 parties, Germany 14, Neth-erlands 17, Portugal 20, France 24, Greece 33, and Brazil 35: and Italy 167. Such an extension of choice makes the citizen’s role too complicated and leader-ship is weakened.

Imagine Sir John A. MacDonald with a dozen or more political parties trying to implement the National Dream. Building a railroad across the hinterland to keep British Columbia within Canada when, at the time, most citizens opposed the expense. Add numerous parties to the parliament of Lester Pear-son and ask how could we have achieved a National Health-Care System when Canadians, then, feared the idea. Every government is called upon to make hard decisions that cannot be achieved with defined-purpose when there is a glut of parties.

It is hard for the fringe to get elected. They cry out for a form of proportional vote-allotment. Their hope is that a gathering of votes from the Atlantic to the Pacific will permit them a seat or two; it is the only way they can get there. However, the fringe remains the fringe but enough of them impair leadership.

The greatness of Canada exists because, unlike other places, we have greater clarity in decision-making. Later, if we don’t like the new system, it will be near impossible to reverse unless the marginal parties willingly agree to self-destruct.

When Edison invented the light bulb it was reported that he said, “Eureka, I have made a better candle.” However, he also brought about shift-work.

So, be careful when wishing for change because that change will arrive with unanticipated conse-quence. Your government is your nation’s CEO and a bunch of far-flung ideas slows down and blunts leadership. No corporate leader would accept such a tangled vision on his/her board of directors. Deci-sion-making is what governments are expected to do.

Governments make judgments and four years later we the people will be called upon to judge of those judgments. That’s the democracy that has given us the Canada we now enjoy here in the best place on earth to live.

Banack’s letterI am 100 per cent

in agreement with Rod-ger. Though it is a fool’s errand trying to under-stand why we have among the highest taxes in the province, probably the most embarrassing pool in the country, and likely the worst roads in the west-ern hemisphere.

Then again, it can also be a short trip when you consider that those who run the show also decided the best way to reduce traffic on a road is to essentially shut it down. Or use round sign

posts with hose clamps to hold a sign adjacent to prevailing winds. Or pour a bunch of road tar and “cat litter” into a hole to patch the road and let traffic pack it down for days instead of doing it right. Or why they divert-ed funds for the northern leg of the ring road for other projects and then turned 54 Ave through Victoria Park into a truck route thus destroying the road; and then it never was fixed because, right-fully so, the residents don’t want to foot the bill!

By the way, Kudos to the City for finally get-ting rid of the totally dead trees in front of the golf course. Better late (years) than never (I had all but given up hope). Perhaps you can get rid of the dying ones now.

“They” say that they want Camrose to be invit-ing to young families. Well here is an idea, if you want this, don’t merely cater to seniors and don’t be incurring millions upon millions of debt (i.e.: Edgeworth...or whatever it is called now, CPAC and City Hall) that the new

residents will be paying off for years.

But hey, spending millions on a building on land we don’t own is a good investment, right? It has to be. After all…it is only good management to blow through the contin-gency fund and require $1 million emergency fund-ing above and beyond the budget just to furnish the place!

That said, people move their families to places because of fun things to do with their families, not because of some artsy place. How about a pool? Something we all could use. Something that tru-ly adds value to life in this community for all. It is all about priorities of those who make the deci-sions.

Instead, we are going to pour more and more money (read: throw away more money) into the pool over the next number of years because there is no money for a pool? No…it is a short trip understand-ing how Camrose is run.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

By Dan JensenThe 185 children in

the OSCAR (Out of School Care) will be able to enjoy nutritious afternoon snacks thanks to the Camrose Moose Lodge.

Moose Lodge mem-ber Tom Niven presented a cheque for $500 to OSCAR director Kandace Bonney.

“We try to keep the funds that we raise in the community,” said Niven.

OSCAR is a 19-year-old Camrose and District Sup-port Services program that provides care to children between the ages of four and a half and 12 at Chester Ronning, Jack Stuart, Spar-ling and Sifton Schools.

Children at St. Pat’s School are gathered and walked to Sparling School.

“We operate according to the Battle River School

Division calendar Monday through Friday from school dismissal to 6 p.m.,” said Bonney.

OSCAR offers a struc-tured program that includes gymnasium and playground games, making crafts, pre-sentations about events and activities in the communi-ties, and special events.

“At Christmas time they made cards for Meals on Wheels clients and for the residents of Sunrise Village,” said Bonney.

“We try to get them involved in the community as much as they can.”

The 25 OSCAR staff range from parents in the community to Augustana students and grandparents.

“They are all certified or are working towards certi-

fication and have their first aid training,” said Bonney.

The OSCAR program has proven to be a very valu-able and much needed ser-vice in the community.

“It allows parents to work a full day knowing their children are safe in a school environment,” said Bonney.

The Camrose Moose Lodge is finding it increas-ingly difficult to support Camrose organizations like OSCAR.

“We are down to about 25 members now and it is hard to raise funds,” said Niven. “The bingos we work in Wetaskiwin are our big-gest fundraiser. We also have breakfasts, but we don’t make much on them because of the rising food costs.”

By Sherri Armstrong, project coordinator for Elder Safe Battle River

Wednesday, June 15 was World Elder Abuse Awareness Day as rec-ognized by the United Nations. We all have a role to play in keeping seniors engaged and safe in their community.

This day is to focus attention on abuse of seniors, whether physical, emotional, financial, sexu-al, medication, psychologi-cal and or spiritual. All forms of abusive behavior are ways in which one per-son is trying to have con-trol and/or exploit power over another.

Seniors often experi-ence more than one type of abuse and it likely esca-lates over time. Shame and fear keep abused seniors from seeking help. It may take a period of time before a senior is willing to accept any form of assistance.

Elder Safe Battle River (ESBR) is a project funded by Alberta Seniors in partnership with mem-bers of the Family Vio-lence Response Council and Camrose and District Support Services. ESBR is working to create a net-work to assist seniors who may be experiencing elder abuse to work on a safety plan and make referral(s) to other agencies to help support and keep the senior safe and engaged in their community.

Elder Safe Battle River works to equip and

engage community mem-bers to keep seniors safe. The goals of this project are to educate people on how to recognize abuse, neglect and exploitation of seniors and to increase awareness that elder abuse is a wide spread problem effecting the entire com-munity.

Everyone can help; it’s simple. Seniors who are isolated are more at risk of elder abuse. Encouraging seniors to be involved in their community can help reduce their isolation. Get to know seniors in your neighbourhood and community. Greet them using their names. Invite seniors to community events. For community events ensure that they are age-friendly and host-ed in accessible locations. Educate yourself on the possible signs of elder abuse.

Support local ini-tiatives which help seniors, provide senior transportation and safe and affordable senior housing. For further infor-mation on elder abuse you can contact Alberta Seniors and Housing at http://www.seniors-hous-ing.alberta.ca/seniors/elder-abuse.html.

For information on local initiatives or to inquire about a free edu-cational presentation for your community group contact [email protected].

CHALLENGE CUPA local team won the last Alberta 55 plus Zone 4 Floor Curling Challenge Cup of the sea-son. Left to right, Dennis Hartman, Dianne Hartman from Bawlf, Roger Olsen and Rosella Snopek from Camrose. A total of 10 teams entered the challenge held in Galahad, with a tie emerging between the Bawlf/Camrose team and a Daysland team. A four end tiebreaker was played, which still had the score tied, so it took a draw to the button by the skips to determine the winner and that was close too with only two centimetres difference.

The Pacifica has a curb-to-curb turning circle and easy highway handling thanks to its construction using high-strength, light-weight steel and other mate-rials. Power comes from a smooth, efficient 3.6-liter,

Chrysler Pacifica 2017Pushes comfort to a whole new levelBy Murray Green

The 2017 Chrysler Paci-fica has arrived at Camrose Chrysler. The automobile world was changed since the minivan was created in 1984. The next evaluation is here.

The family station wagon was replaced with a people mover. Chrysler has reinvented the minivan, with class and modern technol-ogy.

“The new Pacifica has forever changed the way we think about minivans. It is no longer a vehicle to get family members from one place to another. The Paci-fica, depending on options, is a mobile communications and entertainment centre, a storage unit, a get-away machine, a luxury leisure highway cruiser and a mini recreational vehicle,” said Russell Everett, sales asso-ciate for Camrose Chrysler.

All this luxury doesn’t mean it has to break the bank to own it. A gasoline hybrid will actually save you money. It is estimated that it will get about 50 kilometres on an electric charge and 530 miles with its modified V-6 gasoline-assist engine/generator. Theoretically, you could take the Pacifica to commute to work without buying an ounce of gasoline. It is possible with the hybrid version of the new Pacifica.

The fully optioned Lim-ited version of the Pacifica has all of the comforts of your living room. The inte-rior is enwrapped in supple, deep mocha leather; enjoy a 20-speaker Harman/Kar-don premium audio system and it comfortably sits eight people. Each seat has sev-eral options to add comfort including air conditioning. When you don’t need the seats for people it can haul a lot of other things. It has plenty of room for baseball and hockey equipment. The second and third rows of those seats can be removed in mere seconds.

Chrysler has been known for it’s stow ‘n go sys-tem that allows passenger seats to be stowed in the floor. In the new Pacifica,

GenerouscustomersBy Lori Larsen

For Fort McMurray resi-dents returning to their lives will be a long hard struggle and will still require the kind-ness of others to support them through the journey.

Sean Willms, owner of the Norsemen Inn in Camrose knows first hand the continu-ing generosity and support given by Camrosians as he prepares to hand over close to $800 in funds donated by Norsemen customers to the

Canadian Red Cross Fort McMurray Fire Relief.

“When the Fort McMurray fires happened we put out donation boxes at our front desk, the cashier station that serves our restaurant and the dining room, lounge and Taproom Bar and Brewery,” said Willms.

“We put a donation box out in all those areas to make it easy for our customers who wanted to donate money to the Fort McMurray evacuees.”

What may seem like a small donation to the person giving, can mean a world of difference to the people in need.

“We think it was abso-lutely amazing that custom-ers of ours contributed $800 to the Fort McMurray evacu-ees,” remarked Willms.

Willms was humbled by the overwhelming response by customers to a simple yet thoughtful initiative to help others in need.

“In my opinion even smaller businesses like the Norsemen Inn can help. And the community of Camrose really wrapped them-selves around helping fellow Albertans in their great-est time of need. That is impressive.”

Lori Larsen, Camrose BoosterOwner of the Norsemen Inn, Camrose Sean Willms sends a cheque for just under $800 to the Fort McMurray Fire Relief of funds that were donated by Norsemen customers.

Room to de-stressContinued from page 5

“One of the projects we thought of was a de-stress time before finals. Before finals, everybody is stressed and real-ly nervous. So we decided to bring in some animals and let the students go around and pet and cuddle them.”

The room is equipped with calming music, comfort-able seating, healthy snacks and a selection of cuddly ani-mals including Peaches the lizard, Rogue the dog, baby goats and kittens.

“There is also food and pencils and things like that,” said Grade 10 leadership stu-dent Vanessa Guglich. “We wanted a day for students where they could just come and hang out with baby goats or a lizard or kittens.”

The room has been fairly well received by the students who will come in either right before or after an exam to de-stress.

“They (students) are really excited about it,” said Taschuk. “It seems to work because they don’t seem as scared about their finals and are focusing more on the animals instead of worrying about their exams.”

Guglich added, “It just takes a second for them to calm down.”

The food was provided by the school and the array of cuddly animals were on loan from different members of the school.

Providing a service, such as that organized by the OLMP leadership students, is an excellent way to not only assist students with exam anxiety, but show them that support is only steps away.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classifi ed Ads

Which Get Results!Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of AbbreviationsOkay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be HonestExaggerating your item’s fi ner points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your PriceThe cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be AccessibleIncluding a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the fi rst time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Ski jump future is still in the airBy Lori Larsen

After lengthy discussion during the regular council meeting on June 20 the decision on the future of the ski jump is still in the air.

City Hall council chambers was filled to standing room only as many supporters of the refur-bishment of the Nordic ski jump listened as Steve Shuman, Bob Hurlburt and Garry Gibson, members of the Nordic Park Society, presented to council members a proposal to preserve and repurpose the ski jump.

A motion to tear down the ski jump was tabled during the regular council meeting held on Sept. 8, 2015.

Shuman began his presen-tation with a brief history of the ski jump. “There has been a ski jump on this particular site since 1911. The existing steel jump was erected in 1988 with provincial legacy money in preparation for the Alberta games in 1990 and there are only three jumps like it in Can-ada.”

The society proposed a plan to repurpose the jump into an observation tower with exte-rior grated stairs leading to a platform at the top, with public safety in the forefront of the project.

“We plan to have fully rehabilitated steel ridge stairs

with (possible) integrating rest benches built to code ratings and a built-to-code canopy plat-form on top,” said Shuman

Shuman indicated the soci-ety had consulted with the local engineer who was involved in the 1988 construction of the jump and that the engineer verified the capability of the society’s vision for the structure.

“The jump will be fully sandblasted and powder coated with tamper proof LED lighting capable of custom designs on special occasions.

“We also foresee video monitoring and motions sensor lighting to discourage any inap-propriate behaviour.

“The ski jump fully compli-ments the existing ski luge and walking trails and is a lasting icon that truly celebrates our Nordic and Scandinavian heri-tage.”

Shuman explained the cost and possible funding for the project. “Our cost for this phase is about $360,000, with funding accessed through fed-eral, provincial, corporate and foundation grants available to non-municipal entities such as our society.”

Shuman said that the soci-ety has already secured approx-imately $50,000 in funding through cash and pledges from various individuals and service

clubs and that more pledges would be available pending the decision and blessing of city council.

“We are not requesting taxpayer funding and there would be no charge to access the observation tower and no staffing requirements,” said Shuman.

Shuman suggested some of the ideas for the project might also include benches, historic carrons, a gazebo, picnic tables, a climbing wall and a zipline.

“What we need from the city is a letter of permission and support because the property and improvements on the site are owned by the city.”

“We are asking the city to shoulder some of the duties to safely keep this significant historical asset and boost for tourism. The possibilities are endless – the stage is set.”

Councillor Max Lindstrand asked Shuman to specify what phase one would entail.

Shuman indicated phase one would be the rehabilitation of the existing structure. “We want to verify the steel, verify the footing and we will probably have to x-ray some of the steel. We will have to do soil test-ing to ensure the footings are adequate for today but we want

to make sure they are adequate for another 25 years or more.”

He also stated phase one would see the construction of the stairs.

Councillor Greg Wood inquired about the timeline for the project.

Garry Gibson replied. “It depends on the amount of mon-ey we get. If we have sufficient funds it will move very rapidly; at this particular time we are at about $50,000.”

Councillor Wood expressed other concerns with the project including the ongoing mainte-nance of the structure, safety issues with climbing the stairs of the structure, especially in the winter, and the overall appearance of the structure. “I am not sure you can make it attractive enough to keep the other people who are not in this room happy with what it is going to look like when it is done.”

Councillor Bill Sears remarked on the lack of spe-cific details and plans. “I under-stand it is hard for you to come up with too much detail with-out the assurance that you are going forward but I am a little disappointed that we didn’t have more information about budget, are we going to have to build a road to get people up there, what the jump would look like with what is required to make it safe, that was some of the information we were looking for and I think that the people that don’t necessar-ily have the same love for the facility that you do, those are

some of the things they need answered.”

Gibson replied that deci-sions with regard to these issues could not be made with-out knowing the funding was available which, in many cases, would be dependant on wheth-er they receive permission and blessing from the city to move forward.

The concern for safety was addressed by all three of the speakers.

“Your questions and con-cerns are well taken,” said Hurlburt. “It is foremost in our minds and we will do every-thing possible according to all provincial, city regulations.”

Sharing his opinion that the ski jump is a striking sculpture with the potential of being a Camrose feature of Nordic history councillor Max Lindstrand proposed the fun-damental question. “Do we want this icon to remain or do we want to tear it down?

In conclusion Mayor Norm Mayer asked the speakers if they had any printed material that council could look over in further discussion.

Shuman offered the Mayor copies of what they had just presented.

A motion was passed by council that the matter on the ski jump be tabled to the regu-lar council meeting scheduled for July 4 inviting further public opinion on the matter.
