Erickson student receives Citizenship AwardBy SARAH DALRYMPLE

ECI Grade 12 student,Brandi Vivier was a re-cipient o this years GlobalCitizenship Award. TeGlobal Citizenship Awardis presented by the Mani-toba Council or Interna-tional Cooperation and ispresented to our graduat-ing students in Manitoba.Te other three recipientso this prestigious awardinclude Shania NicoleSveinson rom Gimli HighSchool, Rachel AshleyByrka rom Miami School,

and Tea Olalia rom SislerHigh School.

T e Global Citizen-ship Award was estab-lished in 2009 and recog-nizes students who haveparticipated in a range olocal and global volunteeractivities. Each volunteeraction re ects on a more

just and sustainable world.Trough those actions, stu-dents were able to changeand improve the lives omany children, youth, people with disabilities,

and those living in povertybeyond our borders.According to Brandi,

My view o global citizen-ship in uences my dailychoices in many ways: itin uences me to get outand get involved in mycommunity, in my schooland in worldwide projects.Being a global citizen hasgiven me a sense o re-sponsibility and commu-nity.

Brandi has recentlyf nished her fnal year

    at Erickson Collegiate,

graduating on June 21sto this year. Troughouther years at school, Brandiparticipated in local stu-dent groups such as SMAD(Students Making A Dier-ence) which works on bothlocal and global levels, sup-porting the right to oodand education. Tis yearthey have organized a 20hour amine, supported asponsor student rom Haitias well as volunteered inthe local community. Shehas also been a member othe Gay Straight Alliance

to diminish sexism, rac-ism, and homophobia. TeGay Straight Alliance hasalso begun to partner withother schools in Manitoba.Getting one communityinvolved, and then thenext; it all comes togetherin the end to make a hugedi erence, Vivier com-mented.

Since last all, Vivierhas been volunteeringat the Erickson NursingHome playing Bingo, read-ing to seniors, and gener-

ally helping out where shecan. A lot o the peopleI work with can no lon-ger see, so I usually liketo read to them. In addi-tion to the Nursing Home,Brandi is involved in the

Age Initiative, an Initiativeis to increase relationshipsbetween students and se-niors. Brandi was able togo and visit with seniorsat their homes. It was alot more personal then theNursing Home becauseI went directly to their

house, but I was almostalways able to bring cook-ies.Vivier also spends her

ree time volunteering withthe local fre department.Te night beore gradu-ation, Brandi was calledout on a Missing PersonsCase with the Sandy LakeFire Department and otheremergency service work-ers rom locations acrossManitoba. I love volun-teering with the Fire De-partment, Vivier said. Iget to experience all theseexciting situations and I

really like how the wholecommunity comes togeth-er to help one another.Te collaboration o thecommunity is just one othe many reasons that in-spires Vivier to volunteer

    within her community.During her graduation

Ceremony, Vivier receiveda certif cate and a $250award. Ater the summer, she plans on attending theUniversity o Winnipegand is aiming or a careerin the feld o Medicine.

Tey transmit weatherinormation on one o sev-en channels in the VHF ra-dio band, broadcast on or-dinary AM or FM bands inselected areas, and provideup-to-the-minute weath-er warnings, orecastsand reports. Te own oMinnedosa and the R.M.so Odanah and Minto have

Weatherradios in their o-fce to monitor the weatheror alerts on a daily basis.

A lot o olks wonderwhat to do when a severestorm is orecast. Severe

weather can develop veryquickly. Make it a habit tolisten to your local radioor television stations orsevere weather warningsand advice. Make sure youhave a battery-powered ra-dio on hand, as electricityrequently ails during a se-

vere storm. Secure every-thing that might be blownaround or torn loose. Flyingobjects such as patio urni-ture and garbage cans caninjure people and damageproperty. Never ventureout in a boat. I you are onthe water and you see bad

    weather approaching, heador shore immediately.

Always check the marineorecast beore leaving ora day o boating and con-tinue to listen to weatherreports throughout the day.

Be prepared; stormssuch as tornadoes otenstrike too quickly to allow

you to choose a shelter orto pack an emergency kit.

Develop a plan that out-lines where you will takeshelter i a severe stormhits. Reduce the hazardson your property. rim rot-ting or dead branches andcut down dead trees on

your property. You shouldalso check the drainagearound your house to re-duce the possibility obasement ooding. Check

your insurance coverage.Make sure that your insur-ance protection covers allthe potential damages thatmay be caused by severe

weather. Contact your in-surance broker to makesure that you have the ap-propriate coverage.

Tunderstorms arecommon on the prairies.Tey are oten accompa-nied by hail, lightning, high

winds, heavy rain and, oc-casionally, tornadoes.

Lightning is a kill-er. No other aspect o se-

vere summer weather pres-ents more o a danger thanlightning. Bolts o lightninghit the ground at about40,000 kilometers a secondand can carry an electri-cal charge o as much as1 million volts. Te 30-30rule o estimate how araway lightning is, countthe seconds between the ash o lightning and thethunderclap. Each secondis about 300 meters. I youcount ewer than 30 sec-

onds, look around or shel-ter. I you count ewer thanf ve seconds, take shelterurgently - this means light-ning is near and you do not

want to be the tallest objectin the area. It is recom-mended to wait 30 minutesater the last lightning strikein a severe storm beore

venturing outside again.aking shelter rom light-ning I youre indoors, stayaway rom windows, doors, freplaces, radiators, stoves, sinks, bathtubs, appliances, metal pipes, telephones,

and other materials thatconduct electricity. Unplug

your radios and Vs. I youare outdoors, take shelterin a depressed area suchas a ditch or culvert, butnever under a tree. Do notride bicycles, motorcyclesor gol carts or use metalshovels or gol clubs. I youare swimming, return toland immediately. I youare caught in the open, donot lie at. Crouch in theleaprog position and cov-er your head. I you are in

a car, stay there but moveyour car away rom anytrees.

Heavy Rain cancause ooding. Tis is par-ticularly true when theground is already saturatedrom previous storms. I

you know there is oodingor the possibility o ood-ing in your area, keep yourradio on to fnd out whatareas are ooded, what ar-eas are likely to be ooded,as well as what roads aresae, where to go and whatto do i the local emergencyteam asks you to leave yourhome. Generally speaking,it is a good idea to avoiddriving through oodedroads and underpass-es. Te water may be a greatdeal deeper than it looksand you could put yourselin danger.

Hail ake coverwhen hail begins to all. Donot go out to cover plants, cars or garden urnitureor to rescue animals. Hailcomes down at great speed, especially when accom-panied by high winds. Al-though no one in Canadahas been killed by hail, people have been seriouslyinjured by it.

Tornadoes - ormsuddenly, are oten preced-ed by warm, humid weath-er, and are always producedby thunderstorms. ornado

warning signs include theollowing: an extremelydark sky, sometimes high-lighted by green or yel-low clouds, a rumbling or

whistling sound, a unnelcloud at the rear base o athundercloud, oten be-hind a curtain o heavy rainor hail. ornadoes are vio-lent wind storms character-ized by a twisting, unnel-shaped cloud which ormsat the base o cloud banksand points towards theground. ornadoes usu-ally move over the groundat anywhere rom 20 to 90kilometers per hour andoten travel rom the south-

west to the northeast. Teyare erratic and can changecourse suddenly. Do notollow tornadoes in yourcar or attempt to take pho-tographs o them i you

    see a tornado, take shelter

    immediately.aking shelter during a

tornado; I you are at home,go to the basement or takeshelter in a small interiorground oor room such asa bathroom, closet or hall-

way. Failing that, protectyoursel by taking shelterunder a heavy table or desk.In all cases, stay away rom

windows, outside walls anddoors. I you are in an o ceor an apartment building, take shelter in an inner hall-

way or room, ideally in the

basement or on the groundoor. Do not use the eleva-tor and stay away rom win-dows. Avoid buildings suchas gymnasiums, churchesand auditoriums with widespan roos. Tese roos donot have supports in themiddle and may collapse ia tornado hits them. I youare in one o these types obuildings, take cover undera heavy table or desk. I youare caught outside, lie atin a ditch or other low-lyingarea and cover your head.I lightning is occurring,

crouch in the leaprog posi-tion and lower your head.Do not get caught in a car ora mobile home More than50% o all deaths causedby tornadoes happen inmobile homes. I you can-not take shelter in a sturdybuilding, lie down in a ditch

away rom your car or mo-

bile home. Hug the ground, protect your head and

watch out or ying debris.Small objects such as sticksand straws can become le-thal weapons when drivenby the high winds createdby tornadoes.

Ater the storm youmay still be in danger oncea serious storm is over.ake the ollowing steps toprotect yoursel. Check thereports being broadcaston your radio or televisionand ollow instructions.

Give frst aid to people whoare injured or trapped. Gethelp, i necessary. Unless

you are asked to help or arequalifed to give assistance, please stay away rom dam-aged areas. Do not go nearloose or dangling powerlines. Report them and anybroken sewer and watermains to the authorities.Lightning and downedpower lines can cause fres.Report fres to the fre de-partment. Know how tofght small fres. Water sup-plies may be contaminated

so puriy your water by boil-ing it or 10 minutes or byadding water-purifcationtablets or by adding onedrop o unscented chlorine

bleach to one liter o wa-

ter (three drops or cloudywater). I you use chlorinebleach to puriy the water, stir the bleach in and wait30 minutes beore drinking.Te water should have aslight chlorine smell. Leavethe telephone lines ree oro cial use. Do not use thetelephone except in realemergencies. Drive cau-tiously and only i neces-sary. Debris, broken powerlines and washed-out roadsand bridges make driv-ing di cult ater a severe

storm. Give way to emer-gency vehicles at all times.I the power has been oor several hours, check theood in your rerigeratorand reezer to see i it hasspoiled. It is very important to

be aware o what to do insevere weather and neces-sary to know how to care or

yoursel and amily beore, during, and ater a severestorm, because contrary topopular belie, the police, fre, and ambulance servic-es will not be responding

during the storm. Tey tooneed to protect themselvesto be able to do their jobs
