“HELLO SUMMER” COCKTAILS JULY 3, 6 PM CLARK HALL Please bring an hors dʼoevure

The completion of phase one of the Gazebo Memory Walk was sad-dened recently by the death of Kate Romani last month who hadworked so hard to see it brought to fruition. Kate was so well-knownhere at Groton Long Point. She had spent all her summers here as achild with her parents, Kay and Kevin Foley and her sister, Joan Mill-som. Kateʼs married life took her to the Midwest with her husband,Mel, but they returned each summer to their GLP home. Retirementbrought the Romaniʼs back to Kateʼs beloved GLP for good. Besidesbeing a good friend of mine, Kate brought her talents to the GLPNEWS with her wonderful column on the old and interesting housesof GLP which our readers loved. The loss of Kate is bewildering, in-explicable and heartbreaking on so many levels. There are no wordsstrong enough to say how much we all will miss her.

Fred & Cornelia Clark: A Love Story

A chance encounter with Mar-cia Clark in Grotonʼs Big Y amonth or so ago caused me toremember the Clark Family, whowere such a part of Groton LongPointʼs history. As a young boy,I was dimly aware of an olderman named Fred Clark (Mar-ciaʼs father-in-law), whose com-pany took care of garbagecollection as well as real estateon the Point. Fred and his wifeCornelia had three children:Fred, Charlie and Miriam. Iknew Miriam well: a warm andfriendly woman, she was a closeneighbor and ran Clark Real Es-tate for many years until her un-timely death.

In the Archives, I found a1991 short oral history from thelate Evelyn Sharples (Mrs. War-ren G.), in which she reminiscesfondly about the Clarks Senior:“When I remember Fred andCornelia Clark, I think of theword ʻLOVE.ʼ They truly had alife-long love affair.

“Fred once told us that as ayoung man his tuition has beenpaid and a room assigned tohim at the University of Con-necticut. He said, ʻWhen Ithought of Cornelia being waydown here and my being way upthere, I just could not leave.ʼThey were married instead.

“Fred and Cornelia had a deeplove for Groton Long Point, theirhome, and their children. Andthat love extended to theirchurch and to the area commu-nities. It is all a story of love.

“When I came here as a bridein 1944, Warren had already ce-mented a strong friendship withthe Clarks. Cornelia liked to tellus that she knew us before wewere married and that she had

Graham Gavert“FROM THE ARCHIVES”

helped with the courtship! I re-member having dinner withthem; I remember Corneliaʼslovely pink-flowered china; and Iremember that we laughed a lot. That was good.

“Warren was on the sleepingporch of the cottage when all thewindows blew out in the 1938hurricane. He was the first ofsome thirty people who tookrefuge at the Clarksʼ home onBeach Road, including a twelve-day-old baby. Fred and Corneliaalways came through when helpwas needed.

“When I worked with GardnerColson gathering material forthe book, Groton Long Point –Fifty Years and Then Some,Fredʼs reminiscences were in-valuable to us.

“Fred and Cornelia were in-deed ʻMr. and Mrs. Groton LongPoint.ʼ Since their deaths, Ihave not felt the same aboutbeing here.”

Such is the impact that anumber of long-time families –like the Clarks – have had onthe ebb and flow of things hereat GLP.

Caribbean Fish StewThis past winter had one too

many snow storms for me. Soone night I cranked up the heatin the house, put on a summerdress and made this summerstew to help me get through thelong, snowy winter. Hope youfeel those ocean breezes asyou enjoy this recipe.

Ingredients

1/2 teaspoon freshly groundblack pepper1/4 teaspoon ground red pep-per1/2 teaspoon ground cumin1 1/2 teaspoons salt, divided3/4 pound Alaskan salmon fil-let, skin removed and cut into2-inch pieces3/4 pound anythicker whitefish (cod, halibut, sea bass),skin removed and cut into 2-inch pieces3 tablespoons olive oil, di-vided1 medium onion, thinly sliced(about 1 1/2 cups)1 red bell pepper, cut into 3/4-inch pieces (about 1 cup)2 teaspoons fresh thymeleaves2 garlic cloves, minced1 jalapeño pepper, minced1 (13.5-ounce) can coconutmilk1 (14.5-ounce) can petite

diced tomatoes, undrained1/4 cup coarsely choppedfresh cilantro leaves1 tablespoon fresh lime juiceGarnish: fresh cilantro

Instructions

1. Combine black pepper, redpepper, cumin, and 3/4 tea-spoon salt in a small bowl.Sprinkle salmon and snapperon both sides with spice mix-ture. Heat 1 1/2 tablespoons oilin a large nonstick skillet overhigh heat. Add fish, and cook 2minutes or until browned.

2. Heat remaining 1 1/2 table-spoons oil in a large Dutch ovenover medium-high heat. Add onion and next 4 ingredi-ents; sauté 6 minutes or untilvegetables soften. Add coconut milk, tomatoes, and remaining 3/4 teaspoonsalt; bring to a simmer. Add fish; cover and simmer 3minutes or until fish is cooked.Gently stir in cilantro leaves andlime juice. Garnish, if desired.

Itʼs so nice to be back on thepages of The GLP NEWS!Please let me know if youwould like a particular recipe!

Letʼs take a look at the recipefeatured in this issueʼs KatyʼsKitchen column. It is CaribbeanFish Stew which includes fish, herbs, coconut, and some heatfrom a jalapeño pepper andcayenne. The first place to lookfor a wine pairing is the locationfrom which the dish hails. I donʼtthink we are going to find muchin the way of wine from theCaribbean islands. And I donʼtthink rum will work with this dish! When the location fails to yield asuitable wine candidate, look tothe flavor profile and “size” of thefood. Here we have fairly as-sertive flavors and substantialprotein in the salmon and thickwhite fish. These facets suggesta good-sized white wine. So,letʼs go find a rich and flavorfulwhite wine.

Chardonnay would certainlywork, but letʼs take a look at anoff-the-beaten path white fromsoutheastern France. TheRhone River Valley has northernand southern wine making re-gions. The Southern Rhone isrenowned for its Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. It is alsohome to the much less expen-sive Côte du Rhône (shortenedto CdR in wine-speak) wines. And though the red Côte duRhônes are easy to find, a morecomplete search will locate thedelicious white Côte du Rhônewines.

The grapes that comprise

white CdRs are uncommon. They include Roussanne,Marsanne, Viognier, andGrenache Blanc among others. The combination of these grapesproduces a wine that is freshand lively. It is this fruitiness thatwill provide a foil for the heat inthe recipe. In addition, whiteCdRs are medium- to full-bodiedand so will make a good accom-paniment for this rich fish stew. These wines are meant to bedrunk young so look for fairlycurrent vintages. Furthermore, they retail for less than $20 andso wonʼt strain the budget.

There are also some deli-cious white blends from else-where in the Southern RhôneValley. These will be more diffi-cult to find and a bit more expen-sive at around $50. However, they will provide an even betterwine drinking experience. Yourquest should include the mar-velously complex and rich whitewine, Chateauneuf-du-PapeBlanc. Though comprising onlyfive percent of the Chateauneuf-du-Pape production, thesewhites are rich, honeyed, andshow great minerality makingthem good food wines.

Had Dorothy been a wineaficionado, she might have said,“Thereʼs no place like Rhône.”

All except the com-mander wear penny loafers. Hisloafers have tassels. No socksof course, although most of theMilitia can easily afford them. Asthe sun sets over the Sound, theMilitia raise their weapons, thecannons are primed, and Fish-ers Island sends its annual mes-sage of "Good Cheer" to their"neighbors" on the mainland. We get their message andpromise never to darken theirshores (except for an occasionalall-nighter at the Pequot Houseof course)!

From,“Golf Guy in Massachusetts”

When our intrepid “Golf Re-porter,” John Huss, returned tothe relative tranquility of Man-chester-by-the-Sea at the end oflast summer, his "Old Mail Bag"continued to produce some in-teresting material. Case in pointis this query from one of John'sgolfing buddies, John Keleher, who is a pretty funny guy him-self.

Dear Golf Editor:I am writing you because I

have come to understand thatyou and your band of retireeswield the power behind thethrone in this burg. I have beento the Yacht Club and the GLPOffice. The Yacht Club folks toldme to go to the GLP Office. TheGLP Office said they were toobusy issuing boat stickers andtennis permits.

My problem is the cannonsgoing off every Wednesdayevening. At first I thought it wasa Civil War re-enactment, butlater was told it was a sail boatrace. What are they doing I won-der, shooting the losers? Everytime the cannons go off my doghides in the litter box and thenthe cat poops under the bed. Mywater-view McMansion is beingdefiled by this cannonade! TheGLP Police claim their jurisdic-tion ends at the mean high tidemark. I'm hopeful that you andyour band of Monday Golf Duf-fers can address this issue.From,"Cleaning-up on West Shore"

Letter of Concern Regarding Weekly Cannon Fire off GLPMr. Keleher's poignant letter

was forwarded to Mr. Huss andherein Mr. Hussʼ response.

Dear John K: Although I agree that the GLP

Men Golfers are indeed a forceto be reckoned with, I'm not surewe can be of any real assis-tance in this matter. However, rest assured that you have mysympathy. There is nothing likecannon fire to spoil a nice drymartini. The WednesdayEvening Races certainly docause a commotion, especiallywhen several sloops, eachclaiming the right of way, ramthe committee boat at exactlythe same time! My goodness, those yachtsmen are a salty lot! However, you should be in resi-dence when the real shootingstarts. I refer of course to theannual Muster of the Fishers Is-land Militia that takes place latein October. As everyone on thePoint knows, the Fisher Islandfolks don't take kindly to any in-vasion from the "low lifes" ofGLP. In fact, the only placewe're welcome on their island isthe Pequot House which thinksthe legal drinking age is still 13!Back to the Militia. Once a yearthe stalwart defenders of Fish-ers don their uniforms, seizetheir shotguns, load their can-nons and march in good order tothe coastline facing our poorlydefended shores. They are re-splendent in their uniforms; lime
