Today we are celebrating the Feast of Corpus Christi. But, what is Corpus Christi? Corpus Christi are Latin words which mean Christ’s Body in En-glish. Another way of explaining it is to say that today is the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. In other countries, the feast is celebrated on the Thursday after Trinity Sun-

day but here in the United States it is celebrated on the Sunday after Trinity Sunday. How did this feast begin? The Church began celebrating the feast of Corpus Christi in the 13th century. The first celebra-tions began in Belgium in 1246 and soon spread to other coun-tries. The feast was also celebrated with an Eucharistic pro-cession in which the Sacred Host was carried throughout the town, accompanied by the singing of hymns. Pope Urban IV issued a papal bull establishing the Feast of Corpus Christi. He asked St. Thomas Aquinas to compose the prayers for the feast. Here is one of the hymns (in English) that St. Thomas Aquinas composed.

“Down in adoration falling, Lo! The Sacred Host we hail,

Lo! Over ancient forms departing, newer rites of grace prevail,

faith for all defects supplying, where the feeble senses fail. To the everlasting Father,

and the Son who reigns on high, with the Holy Spirit proceeding forth from Each eternally,

be salvation, honor, blessing, Might and endless majesty. Amen.

Hoy celebramos la fiesta de Corpus Christi. Pero, ¿qué es el Corpus Christi? Corpus Christi son palabras latinas que signi-fican el Cuerpo de Cristo en inglés. Otra forma de explicarlo es decir que hoy es la Fiesta del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. En otros países, la fiesta se celebra el jueves después del Do-mingo de la Trinidad, pero aquí en los Estados Unidos se cele-bra el Domingo después del Domingo de la Trinidad. ¿Cómo comenzó esta fiesta? La Iglesia comenzó a celebrar la fiesta del Corpus Christi en el siglo XIII. Las primeras cele-braciones comenzaron en Bélgica en 1246 y pronto se exten-dieron a otros países. La fiesta también se celebró con una procesión eucarística en la que se llevó a cabo la Sagrada Hostia por todo el pueblo, acompañada por el canto de los himnos. El papa Urbano IV emitió un decreto papal estableciendo la Fiesta de Corpus Christi. Le pidió a Santo Tomás de Aquino que compusiera las oraciones para la fiesta. The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Today we celebrate the gift of the Body and Blood of Christ we hear Jesus ask his disci-ples, “Why do you not give them something to eat yourselves?” And he shows them how by the multiplication of the five loaves and

two fishes.

Today, as you donate to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul know that the multiplication of the loaves and fishes will happen again and the hungry will be fed.

The month of May was an extremely busy month for Saint Vicent de Paul. 115 peo-ple received food and 95 received assis-tance with rent and utilities. The cost for everything was over $8 000, so the treasury is looking pretty slim.

If you would like to donate locally, St. Vincent de Paul would appreciate any monetary donations. Please send your donation to the parish office or drop it in the Sunday collection. Thank you!
