It is no surprise that Albertans have done what Albertans do best, and that is show resilience and come together when needed most. As a result of your sacrifice and your adherence to public health guidelines, our focus has been able to shift to the reopening of our economy.

Alberta’s Relaunch Strategy was developed on the advice of public health officials. The full relaunch strategy has allowed for the gradual, staged reopening of businesses, services, and recreational opportunities, as they are able to reopen under health guidelines. Several safeguards will remain to keep us protected, including increased testing capacity, comprehensive contact tracing, support for those who test positive, stronger border controls and airport screening, rules and guidance for the use of masks, and strong protections for the most vulnerable.

The successful launch of the strategy will be contingent upon our continued ability to keep infection rates low and well within the capacity of our healthcare system.

Although we will have to continue to practice the physical distancing and hygiene habits that we have all adapted to over the last several months, I am confident that Albertans will continue to work together so we can slowly start to get Albertans back to work.

As the summer months approach, I am sure many of you are wanting to get outdoors and enjoy what summer has to offer. With provincial parks once again open to the public, and campgrounds taking reservations, I encourage you to take advantage, but do so while exercising good judgement and continue to abide by current health guidelines.

I urge you to continue to follow the recommendations made by the Government of Alberta and monitor https://www.alberta.ca/alberta-relaunch-strategy.aspxfor up to date information on the government’s relaunch strategy.

As always, please feel free to reach out to my office at [email protected] if you have any questions.

We are Knitting for a Cause! The Knitting for a Cause group would like to extend their heart-felt appreciation to everyone in the community who has donated wool and knitting supplies to their initiative over the years. Thanks to your donations, the group has been able to spread kindness and compassion throughout our wonderful city, one stitch at a time. The group began by knitting sets of children’s hats, scarves and mitts to donate to elementary schools in Calgary. Thanks to your generosity, hundreds of little hands and ears have been kept warm during our frigid Calgary winters. While the group continues to knit winter wear for kids, they have also expanded to participate in some incredible initiatives. Our group has been busy and there is no sign of slowing down. We are always looking for new members. All ages and skill levels welcome! No knitting experience necessary. Come and be part of the amazing projects we have underway. Just like the fi rst signs of spring, there are some hints in the air that our collective confi nement might be slowly lifting (as if we don’t spend enough time huddled in-doors when it is -40 degrees outside). My golfi ng neigh-bours here on Brown Crescent are looking forward to teeing off this week as courses are opened up, but they will miss the social side of the game while distancing rules remain in eff ect. I remain hopeful that by the time this June issue of the Bugle hits your doorstep, life will be starting to look a bit more normal. Of course, we can’t expect a total reset to the “pre-COVID” world: some things will be changed for good (or bad).

One lasting impact that we will unfortunately see will be the closure of businesses that cater to our community and provide a living for owners and employees. Federal

government assistance programs will hopefully help some businesses weather the storm but for others, the long stretch without customers, and possible perma-nent changes to the way people go about their lives, will be too much. I urge readers to shop local whenever possible – many small businesses are off ering delivery or curbside pickup, and they need your patronage now. The same is true for arts and cultural institutions, as well as the artists and performers who all make our city an enriching place to live. If you are able, I urge you to consider making a donation to music groups or the-atres that you enjoy, to help ensure that they can con-tinue to entertain us. Now would also be a great time to buy a CD or t-shirt from a local musician’s website or Bandcamp page, or purchase their music from iTunes or a similar download site.

More TragediesT.S. Eliot wrote that “April is the cruelest month”, and Canadians could be for-given for agreeing with him this year. As if the loss of life from COVID-19 and the challenges of living under lockdown - and for many losing their livelihoods – were not enough, we have had to process the sense-less act of violence that took place in Nova Scotia. Many Calgarians, myself included, have ties to the province, and we are all horrifi ed. Add to this the devastating fl ooding in Fort McMurray, just recov-ering from the huge fi res that devastated the com-munity in 2016, and the loss of a navy helicopter with all crew in the Mediterranean, and it can feel like too much to handle.

The silver lining of all these tragedies and challenges is that they help unite all Canadians in helping and grieving, and serve to re-mind us that whatever dif-ferences we have, we are all much stronger together.

Brentwood CaresThe Brentwood Community continues to exemplify this spirit of solidarity through the “Brentwood Cares” initiative. Such is the level of willingness to pitch in

and help that Brentwood volunteers are looking beyond our community, and helping out Foreign Temporary Workers and Cargill plant employees as those groups struggle under the present circumstances. If you know someone, within our community or elsewhere, who needs help – or if you can off er time and energy, please see the notice in this issue and get in touch!

Photo Contest The Bugle is looking for Brentwood’s best amateur photographers to provide cover images each month. If you have a great snap of our neighbourhood saved on your phone or posted on your social media feed, send it in for a chance to be featured on the cover of an upcoming issue! Photos must be 300 DPI or higher (i.e. from a newer model phone or good digital camera), 6.3 x 8.2 inches minimum size, and portrait orientation. If submitting pictures of minors, please make sure that you have direct, express permission to submit the picture from a parent or guardian. Send your photos, or any questions, to [email protected].

Brentwood development and transportation CommitteeSubmitted by Melanie Swailes on behalf of the BCA Development and Transportation Committee

why Get involved in Your Community?Since the COVID-19 pandemic was declared by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020, we’ve all seen major changes to our lives. Children are no longer in school, many people have either lost their jobs or are working from home, and other than grocery stores, few shops are open. All of the large public attractions or events are closed and will likely remain closed for many months. Trips or holidays outside of our own areas are discouraged, if not completely impossible.

What this means is that our lives are now focused on our homes and our immediate surroundings. Our community has become the place where we live, work, home-school, and play. Brentwood is a great area for long walks or bike rides, and we are fortunate to have so many greenspaces and trees to enjoy. I’ve never seen so many people just out for a stroll in the evenings, and during the day, there are always kids out-side playing, riding their bikes or creating sidewalk art.

The Brentwood Community Association has stepped forward with a Brentwood Cares initiative so that residents can get help if they need it and others can volunteer their time and energy; http://brentwoodcommunity.com/covid-19/.

Although the monthly BCA meetings have been cancelled, the Board is still working on financial updates and planning ahead. The Development and Transportation Committee (DTC) is still receiving and evaluating Development Propos-als. The BCA has many volunteers who all do a lot of work behind the scenes in order to keep our community active!

But we also need your input. Now that many of you are spending so much time in your own neighbourhood, what have you come to appreciate? What would you like Brent-wood to look like in 20 years’ time?

The City of Calgary is asking the same questions as part of “Next 20: Municipal Development Plan & Calgary Transporta-tion Plan review” https://engage.calgary.ca/next20. From the City website regarding Stage 1 of the survey: “The survey was live on the calgary.ca/engage portal from March 1 to April 8, 2019, and 543 surveys were completed.” Out of a population of well over one million people, only 543 people completed the survey last year! There is still a chance to provide input: due to COVID-19, the current survey questions are open for an indefinite period (as of press time).

Another proposed document that will guide future redevel-opment in established neighbourhoods is the Guidebook for

Great Communities. (You can find archived development ar-ticles from the Bugle at this BCA link: https://developments.brentwoodcommunity.com/bugle-articles/.)

The Development and Transportation Committee reviews Development Permits (DPs) based on planning rationale, but we also want to reflect the views of our residents. For example, when we deliver Neighbour Notifications for DPs, neighbours often write to the BCA with new information about the site, information that we would not otherwise know, and which we can then include in our comments to the City file manager.

The same applies to the Guidebook, since it proposes some major changes to what types of buildings could be built in current low-density areas. If you have time right now, please consider reading some of the above documents, and then write a letter to the BCA to let us know what you think. All communities and buildings have a lifecycle and will evolve over time. Make sure you have a say in how that redevelop-ment happens.

Public participation can have an effect on a community. We often hear people say, “why bother?” or “they will just do what they want anyhow”. Sometimes this appears to be the case, but by submitting our input, we at least can help the BCA, our City Councillor, and City staff understand what is important to us in our community. It also helps them to un-derstand that we want to be involved in decisions that affect us.

COVID-19 has restricted our movements and brought our fo-cus to a local level. The pandemic is world-wide, but each of us experiences it in our own little area: our house, our street, our community. Many of us have come to really appreciate our Brentwood area even more than we did before. Getting involved in planning surveys, community events and joining the Brentwood Community Association are all ways that we can help to make our community strong and resilient!

Stay safe. Follow Province of Alberta and City of Calgary Guidelines.

Thank you to the many Brentwood residents who have reached out to help each other during this pandemic.

If you are interested in community planning and redevelopment issues, we welcome new members to join us. Our meetings have been temporarily suspended until further notice. Please contact the BCA for more information at [email protected] or at 403-284-3477.

Spring at last! These last days of April have finally seen more spring-like temperatures with crocuses popping up and over-wintering pansies blooming amidst the muscari (see photo). The muscari are swarming with bees and the negotiation about who got the nest hole in my birch tree has been won by the nut-hatches who, despite being very small birds, are very aggressive. The snow has vanished, and the puddles left behind have shrunk dramatically.

At the garden, there is very early growth of the day lilies and rhu-barb, and soft buds are evident at the tips of the branches of our apple trees. The rest of the perennials have not yet awakened.

Fortunately, community gardens in Calgary remain open during the pandemic, unlike the situation in other parts of the country. However, we are anticipating a very different gardening season this year. Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we have had to adjust our activities in order to adhere to the public health regulations which restrict any large gatherings and require in-dividuals, including our gardeners, to maintain social distancing when working at the garden. We also have to ensure that any frequently touched surfaces, such as the gate, the water faucets and hoses, are kept sanitized – a significant challenge in an area that is located on public land, is not locked, is not supervised 24/7 by the volunteer gardeners and to which the public has free access. With this in mind, we have chosen to restrict public ac-cess to the garden. A sign indicating this has been placed on the gate and we are hopeful that the public will admire the garden from outside the fence and not risk their own health or that of our gardeners.

Social interaction among the gardeners is one of the joys of be-ing involved in a community garden so we will certainly miss that while the public health restrictions are in place. If we are fortunate, the limits on large group meetings will be eased so that we can celebrate our harvest social at the end of the season. Fingers crossed!

the Compassion and tenacity of Joan embry- a tributeby Lee Hunt

“I hope she realized what an incredible impact she had in this world!” These words were penned by Kim Embry, a daughter-in-law to Joan Embry, who passed away at her Brockington Road home on April 1, 2020. Joan’s deep legacy is incredibly evident as I read through the condolences written on the funeral web-page by her family, friends, professional colleagues, clients, and neighbours.

Joan was born and raised in Manitoba and received her Bach-elor of Nursing in 1970. She married her “high school sweet-heart”, Ashton, and the pair soon moved to Calgary. Sons Matt and Duncan were born before the family moved to Brentwood in 1978. Shortly after, son Dean was born. Joan volunteered at Captain John Palliser Elementary to assist on her sons’ field trips, plus never missed their soccer games played on our Brentwood fields. Joan recently again became a “cheerleader” on those same fields as two of her four grandchildren took up community soccer. When the grandchildren were at Dr. Coffin School, Joan enthusi-astically volunteered with the reading program.

Joan’s granddaughter, Claire, age 11, told me, “I love my Grandma because we played lots of games and had lots of fun times at Storybook Theatre.” Her brother, Ashton, age 9, spoke of “going on bike rides with Grandma and it was lots of fun.” Both children have particularly fond memories of the “awesome and cool fairy garden”, which they created with Joan.

Once settled in Calgary, Joan energetically took up her nursing career working initially for the VON, then as a Public Health Nurse, and finally as a Calgary Home Care Coordinator. In her career, as in life, Joan’s selfless, caring nature shone through. As friends Maureen and Randy Webb put it, “Joan’s tenacity married with compassion was something to behold.” Perhaps this was most ev-ident in the special Christmas Dinner which Joan coordinated for some 15 years for seniors with no family in Calgary. Joan “recruit-ed” Ashton, their 3 sons – Matt, Dean, and Duncan, plus various friends to help set up, serve, visit, and clean up. Joan’s enthusiasm was contagious!

In our wider Brentwood community, Joan and Ashton donated to the 2005 Community Mural and this past summer, along with

granddaughter Claire, they helped paint the sidewalk by the ‘Old Hall’. Joan and Ashton’s focus was on trian-gles, while Claire drew and painted a butterfl y.

Joan was one of the fi rst people in Brentwood to create a back-lane garden. Between the fence and the lane, she planted numerous fl owers and shrubs. Ashton told me that people on foot and in cars often stopped to marvel at Joan’s garden. As a demonstration of her keen sense of humour and humility, Joan posted a sign over her laneway garden reading, “Experimental Weed Farm”. Neighbours across the lane, Kate and Don Kronstedt, enjoyed that garden, plus the fact that they “spent hours with Joan chatting, giggling, sharing stories, and solving world problems.”

When Calgary weather was not conducive to garden-ing, Joan took on a huge challenge – the compiling and writing of The Best Bet Diet Cookbook. Sponsored by the charity DIRECT – MS, which Joan and Ashton estab-lished in 1996 after their son, Matthew, was diagnosed with MS, the cookbook was published in 2019. In prepa-ration for the book, Joan spent innumerable hours test-ing out recipes plus making certain that all are gluten free and dairy free. Her daughter-in-law Kim did the marvellous design work for the book. Brentwood resi-dent, Melanie Swailes, told me, “I was always impressed by Joan and Ashton’s dedicated work on DIRECT-MS and on The Best Bet Diet Cookbook. Ashton recently gave me a fi nished copy of Joan’s cookbook and I will trea-sure it”.

As a wife, mother, grandmother, neighbour, nurse, and friend, Joan was always totally immersed. As Ashton told me, “Joan believed in getting involved and staying involved.” Pat Hodgins, Joan’s friend of over 40 years, echoed that insight, saying “Joan was a fi ghter for the truth and for fairness.” Pat quotes an anonymous saying to describe Joan:

“Friendship isn’t about who you’ve known the longest. It is about who walked into your life and said, ‘I’m here for you’ and proved it.”

Joan always “proved it” – at work, in the community, at home. We at The Bugle extend our condolences to Ashton and all of the Embry family in the loss of Joan.

News from the Friends of nose Hill

by Anne Burke

The City maintains 984 kilometers of regional pathways and 96 kilometers of trails. In the late 1960s, Calgarians thought of a system of connected pathways to enjoy the visual amenities and access areas of unique natural beauty. The fi rst completed section of a pathway was in the early 1970s. Nose Hill Park has both pathways (to protect the vegetation) and trails. Please use both wisely.

• A regional pathway is part of the city-wide network and is usually paved with asphalt.

• A local pathway provides routes in communities, link-ing residential areas to neighbourhood parks, schools and other community destinations.

• Trails are unpaved paths usually made of grainy or compacted dirt.

Work on pathways deals with missing links, lifecycle repairs, and safety improvements. The City will update existing (and build new) pathways and bikeways. Path-ways are off -street and bikeways are on-street. The 2001 Calgary Pathway and Bikeway Plan is being updated, since many proposals in the original plan were built, while others are obsolete, due to changes in roads and development. The needs of users and City policies have changed over time. The aims are to separate people by speed, improve visibility, and make routes more reliable, easier to use, and accessible.

The vision is to help us walk, run, ride, and use mobility devices, whether for social, recreational or commercial activities, to connect with public transit and parking. City Council approved guiding principles for the “5A” network for walking and wheeling infrastructure. For now, City staff will work with approved capital budgets. Future capital investment and more budget requests will be needed to build out the network over time.

Online registration for the 2020-2021 season will be available July 1 to August 15 at www.nwwarriorshockey.com

Hockey is a great sport for the whole family. It is a super way to break up your winter hibernation. Games and practices become social events for friends and families during the cold, chilly months. It is also a great way to keep your kids active and healthy, and there is always room for Dad and Mom to get out there and help too!

Our Timbits/Tyke program (Ages 5 to 6) is well known and has a great reputation for fun and skill develop-ment. In fact, CHA/NWW was one of the fi rst in Calgary with a comprehensive program for this age group. What makes it even more appealing is that we have set days/times that are easy to schedule around! Even Sidney Crosby was once a Timbit!

Our hockey association has some of the lowest registra-tion fees in the city. Our program is open to girls and boys between the ages of 5 and 20 years. Our goal is to off er our kids the opportunity to play hockey in a fun, positive, learning environment. We want them to leave the ice at the end of the season looking forward to the next one.

This season, we are once again off ering an additional program for Novice, Atom and Peewee – House League. This is a specialized program that will run from early Sep-tember to mid-March. Players will take part in an evalu-ation process in order to balance the teams. Some key diff erences between House League and Community:

• Two sheets of ice a week: One Practice, One Game• All ice used will be in the NW only – no travelling for

games• No exhibition games• No tournaments• No playoff s

• Limited space• More information can be found on our website

Financial assistance is available through the Calgary Flames “Even Strength” Program and KidSport Calgary (which covers registration fees), and we are also part-nered with the Comrie’s Sports Equipment Bank (which covers equipment) – subject to eligibility requirements.

Complete registration information and fees can be found on our website, www.nwwarriorshockey.com. You can also contact Fiona at [email protected] if you have any further questions.

We look forward to seeing you all out on the ice in September!

Have a safe and warm summer,Northwest Warriors Hockey
