We now have over 30 volunteers, and are planning for garden construction activities and early planting dur-ing May. Details of registration and our CG guidelines and waiver are on the OCA website. Please note we have implemented extra requirements to keep both gardener volunteers and the OCA as safe as is rea-sonably practical with minimal liability risks. Please comply with all directions provided by CG committee members. These directions are required to enable us to keep the CG progressing as per our earlier plans. Thanks for your cooperation.

We are also planning a plant swap/sale on Saturday, May 30 from 9:00 am until noon. Access and arrange-ment details will be dependent on COVID-19 emer-gency restrictions in place at the time. We have been studying 10 different options to again minimize risk while building community and enabling plant swaps. Elaine Smith - Our CG Events Coordinator will be leading this effort. See the Oakridge website or the Oakridge Monitor for the latest details.

OAKRIDGE SENIORS ASSOCIATION

New LinksOur Facebook page, Oakridge Seniors, now links to the Oakridge Parents (OP) page to start building a truly multi-generational community. Note: our Facebook page is a closed community, not open to the public. Help get the word out. When out walking, at a physical distance, talk to people you meet and let them know what we are doing. On my walks, I’ve met many who don’t know about OSA or OP. Be our ambassador and tell them where to find us online. - We now have 170+ users on our OSA Facebook page. It’s great to stay in touch, interact with one another, and make important announcements.

Membership RenewalComing up soon! Watch for contact from Gord, our Membership chair. Ideas for expanding our member-ship? Contact Barry.

ZoomRecent improvements to this site have made it safer and more user friendly. Zoom is a perfect and safe place for us to meet online for meetings (men’s coffee, la-dies chat, movie club) classes (tai chi), French refresher, Bridge, and presentations. Only the meeting host can let people enter the group online. We will help mem-bers become comfortable using Zoom with links to one-on-one training or coaching. Just ask!

Computer/IT AccessHaving trouble accessing us online? We have funds and will soon have Wi-Fi-ready equipment for member use. Let us know if you need help with this. Not just to par-ticipate with us but to access online shopping, banking, keeping up personal contacts, etc. through an internet connection. One-on-one help is also available to se-niors through CyberSeniors.org. Many members report excellent experiences with this group.

Connections ManagerCurrently hiring a part-time manager to work with our growing group of volunteers and programs. Watch for an appointment very soon.

Household HelpDel Kobleski and Steve MacInnis are compiling a list of vetted contractors to help you with household chores. Contact Del to let him know of your personal help-ing angels and ask about recommendations. Building

a thorough list of skilled, qualified, and member en-dorsed contractors to come to your home and help you; [email protected]

Buddy System - Neighbors Helping NeighborsLong-term plan calls for setting up buddies to help one another with regular call ins, transportation, small re-pairs, moving garbage containers, groceries, yard work, etc. Right now, social isolation is even more of a prob-lem for many. Our funding partner, Calgary Seniors, can assist here. Could you step forward to set up a program and recruit others or volunteer yourself? Can you help with phoning, driving, small jobs? Contact Barry to step up to the plate to help your neighbours.

Other Community AssociationsInterested to hear what they are doing? Can we share some of their great ideas? President Barry is in close contact with all major senior centres in Calgary to find out about best practises.

OSA PostcardDesign completed and a postcard will be delivered to all 2500 homes in Oakridge in the next few weeks. Pub-licizes our programs, invites interest in our activities and contact with our group.

WebpageDesigned a vibrant webpage to be online in the next 10 days. Will reach wider audience, members, other com-munity groups, other senior groups. Makes signing up and paying for membership, events, and programs a breeze. Allows people get information when it’s right for them.

Our Future SecuredU of C Haskayne School of Business has provided 2 MBA students to develop a long-term strategy plan. The pur-pose: to make OSA a self-sustaining group within three years. This will guide our board’s planning.

Fun and Interesting ActivitiesDon’t wait to start something new. Here are some of the programs and activities we offer through Zoom now: *Tell Jane if you are interested in starting a new beginners class

Bingo Volunteers NeededThe Oakridge Community Association requires volunteers to work monthly bingos at the Bingo Barn in NE Calgary.

For each bingo worked you would receive a $50 bingo buck that can be spent on any activity that is run through the Oakridge Community, as well as numerous sports organizations, Tools for Kids Preschool, and Southland Leisure Centre just to name a few!

Please contact Sandy if you can help out at 403-238-0007

IMPORTANT NOTE PARKING LOT SPEED LIMITPlease be advised that the speed limit in the parking lot of the community centre is 5 km/hour. Our parking lot is very busy at pick-up times for a variety of sports and community programs, many catering to younger children. Often children are excited when leaving the building and may not look before they run into the path of traffic. Please note that the end of the cement pad is a drop-off/pick-up zone only – unattended vehicles are not allowed. Also, the handicap parking stall is for vehicles that have a handicap parking sticker.Help us ensure the safety of all users of the Oakridge Community Centre by entering and exiting the parking lot carefully.

Civic Affairs and Planning Activities Impacting OakridgeMany of the City of Calgary’s consultation activities have been put on hold - while other activities are being managed virtu-ally. Our Councillor, Jeromy Farkas, continues to have weekly Town Halls via Facebook. This has enabled us to raise questions about speeding in the community, both on roads and on bike paths, SW rig road plans and start up dates, completion of road construction at 90th Avenue and 14 Street, and finally about lane way housing.

We also continue to collaborate with other adjacent commu-nities on a Multi-community Local Area Plan (LAR) and other items related to Civic Affairs and City Planning. District 32 refers to Oakridge, Palliser, Bayview, Pump Hill (PBPCA), Brae-side, Cedarbrae, Woodbine and Woodlands (Woodcreek CA). Woodbine recently sent a notice to the Honourable Whitney Issak regarding constituents concerns about the lack of com-munication by Alberta Transportation on changes to the SW ring road connectors, and have asked for a meeting in early May. We are attempting to stay informed as the SW ring road and any changes that could impact some Oakridge residents.

The timing of Co-op redevelopment, the Bike Skills Park, and the Quinterra Legacy Park are all being affected by the current COVID-19 emergency, and we continue to try and get updates. As mentioned last month, we are not satisfied with the City’s piecemeal approach to S. Glenmore Park, so we have had our 1st meeting on the S. Glenmore Park and adjacent Natural Ar-eas to try and limit/influence further piecemeal development in the park.

This update was written on April 30, so by early June, things will likely have changed. Hopefully these changes are for the better with the recent phased (1, 2, and 3) COVID-19 restriction relaxation plans.

Stay safe – physically apart – but socially together in these ex-traordinarily difficult times.

So Many Ways to Support Fish Creek Provincial Park!Capture Nature – Photography Contest - May 1 to July 31The Capture Nature Photo Contest is a creative way of enjoying the beauty and inspiration of Fish Creek Provincial Park. It’s a good-spirited competition for all ages and levels of photography, and a great excuse to visit the park on a regular basis. This year’s themes are A Bug’s Eye View, Power and Grace, and Weather or Not. We know the themes are a bit challenging, and we hope they will encourage you to look at and connect with the park in a different way. All photos must be taken in Fish Creek Provincial Park and can be submitted at any point during the contest, but the earlier the better! The public will be able to vote for their favourite photos through our online gallery, so early submissions will have more time to collect votes! Visit the Friends’ website for more contest fees and info, to find out prize details, contest rules and regulations, and to register! Many thanks to our contest sponsors for their generous donations of contest prizes: MEC, RMB Photography and Vistek. https://friendsoffishcreek.org/programs/capturenature.

Shaw Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink

Support Outdoor Education in Fish Creek and Your Donation will be Matched Up to 50%!Shaw Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink (BFK) is a truly amazing program that helps to raise funds for chil-dren throughout Alberta. BFK runs in conjunction with the Shaw Charity Classic, taking place August 24 to 30 at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club. Through BFK, your donation will be matched up to 50% and your contribution can go even further. We are very grateful that the Friends of Fish Creek and our Learning Naturally program has once again been chosen as one of more

than 200 Alberta charities to participate in Birdies for Kids this year. Birdies for Kids will support the Friends’ Learning Naturally program, which includes TD Learn-ing Naturally. TD Learning Naturally helps provide over 4700 children each year with a life-changing field trip to Fish Creek Provincial Park. Students in the TD Learning Naturally program attend economically disadvantaged schools in Calgary and may not have the opportunity to visit Fish Creek were it not for Learning Naturally. This essential program does not receive regular fund-ing and we rely on ongoing donations from community members and organizations. Please talk to your friends, family members and even your employer about con-tributing this year. To donate, or for more information, contact the Friends or visit https://friendsoffishcreek.org/event/birdies.

Park Protectors NeededBecome a Fish Creek Provincial Park Protector and help the Friends of Fish Creek uphold our vision of a sustain-able Fish Creek Provincial Park that improves the quality of life for current and future generations. As an alterna-tive to annual membership renewals, the Park Protector program may suit your busy lifestyle a little better. As a Park Protector, you can make monthly donations to the Friends of Fish Creek, which are automatically withdrawn from a credit card. A steady, reliable source of funding will enable the Friends to continue with ongoing field work, raise awareness about the park, and organize and participate in community outreach activities. Park Pro-tectors never have to worry about keeping donations or membership up to date and will receive one tax receipt a year. For more information please visit https://www.friendsoffishcreek.org/park-protector-signup.

Phase 4 Bricks are Going Fast! Leave a Lasting Legacy and Show Your Support for Fish Creek Provincial Park.

There are fewer than 25 bricks available in the fourth and final phase of the Friends Brick Pathway. This pro-gram began in 2017 to commemorate the 25th Anni-versary of the Friends of Fish Creek. You may have seen these bricks in front of the Cookhouse at the Bow Valley Ranch in Fish Creek Provincial Park, or dedicated one yourself. If you did not get a chance to dedicate a brick, now is a great time to dedicate one of the remaining bricks. Bricks are only $250 each and you will receive a valuable tax receipt for your donation. A brick would also make an amazing gift for anyone who enjoys visit-ing Fish Creek Provincial Park and would like to see it protected and preserved. For more information, please visit https://friendsoffishcreek.org/brick.

Weekly Green Cart Pickup is Back!Weekly green cart pickup will re-sume the week of May 19. Your green cart will continue to be picked up on the same day on a weekly basis. There is no change to your collection days.

You can see your updated sched-uled online at calgary.ca/collec-tion. Make sure to sign up for free reminders or download the Calgary Garbage Day app so you receive the latest service updates and tips.

Your green cart pickup will remain at once every two weeks in the interim. Neighbours Helping Neighbours:Commit to Three Acts of KindnessIn light of the COVID-19 pandemic, social connec-tivity, mental health, and community wellness are more important than ever. Calgarians are renowned for their acts of generosity during times of uncer-tainty, but sometimes, it can be difficult to know exactly how to help.

The City of Calgary is encouraging citizens to com-mit to three simple acts of kindness to support your neighbours, your community and the city. Visit calgary.ca/HelpingOthers to find ideas, volunteer opportunities, printable tools and resources, and other ways to give.

Be sure to share your acts of kindness on social media and to take part in these community-led movements that are gaining popularity for their positivity: #3Things4Neighbours, #AlbertaCares, #SupportLocalYYC and #yycHubs.
